I wonder if cats are stimulating their vagus nerve when they purr--I know they purr when they are content, but also have known them to purr when injured or extremely stressed.  Purring is so strong; it affects the whole throat area so I'm thinking it must vibrate their vagus nerve--for the better.

yes, that is my theory also, I mentioned it on EE thread. very often you see cats with multiple fractures that purr like little machines
