The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Keit:
Watched this movie the other day. And it was quite a disturbing experience, though the movie itself is well made, and the story line is captivating. It is based on "Millennium" trilogy by Stieg Larsson. It is not a typical crime thriller, perhaps because one of the main characters is very strong but very wounded woman, who had her own share of horrible abuse that left a distinct mark. I would recommend this movie as a graphic depiction of psychopathic reality and its treatment of women.

Here is the synopsis from IMDB that contains minor spoilers:

--- Quote ---"Män som hatar Kvinnor" is a whodunit thriller revolving around sadism towards women. It is based on the first book in Stieg Larsson's crime trilogy with the main characters journalist Mikael Blomkvist and outcast hacker Lisbeth Salander. For the record, this trilogy has had rave reviews and been among the best selling books in Scandinavia.

An aging corporate executive, Henrik Vanger, employs Blomkvist to solve the puzzle of his missing niece - A girl who mysteriously disappeared 40 years earlier. It has become an obsession to this man to shed some light on his missing niece's fate, and he is desperate to have closure before it's his own time to pass. Over the years 82 year old Henrik Vanger has been gathering a substantial amount of hints and clues, but he was never able to put the pieces together. Acclaimed journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired for his researching skills, following a thorough background check. Blomkvist's recent committal order doesn't discourage Vanger. He shows no interest for compromise in getting the right man for the job.

Eventually Blomkvist teams up with secluded computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. Their investigation unfolds a complex set of clues leading to a string of morbid sadistic murders spanning decades. Pieces of the puzzle slowly start falling into place, as inevitable confrontation with the hidden villain draws closer. Alongside this main plot line, both of our main characters have to deal with personal problems that act as obstacles for the main chase and help us understand our main characters.

I watched this movie, and I liked it. It was a difficult watch, but I enjoyed it as it was better than most Hollywood movies. Though I've heard they're going to re-make it in Hollywood  Either way, I'm looking forward to the next one, The Girl Who Played With Fire.

**SPOILER ALERT**

One part of the movie that gave me mixed emotions was the rape scene. I found myself feeling very upset when Lizbet got raped by that old man (as I do with most rape scenes in movies) but in the next scene when she took her revenge on him in the same way... I felt almost... satisfaction.

I thought this was a disturbing feeling within myself- as I generally tend to think revenge is never a good thing. After all, as Gandhi said, "An Eye for an eye will make the world blind" I found myself wondering if most people found her action justified.

  ...Ditto....

Hi Deedlet
I agree with you about the rape scene..{horrible to say the least] and I too found myself feeling satisfaction
with her revenge. {Go Girl}..She sure put an end to her abuse and maybe?. taught her abuser a lesson.

At the beginning, when they show us that she recorded everything, I thought that she will go to the authorities with it. So during the first few moments of her revenge I was silently shouting "no, no" because thought that it was going to be an act of pure revenge. And frankly, what she did appeares to be as the only available and "working" solution. Why would she go to the authorities if she was already betrayed and abused by a man in authority? It was important to her not only to protect herself, but also prevent him from hurting others. And she did the best she could within her wounded life experience. Also loved the tatto she left him.

Sid:
Me and my wife have seen both movies with english subs and got the third book too. Eagerly awaiting the final 3rd movie to come out. On the face of it, it appears to be a common girl against the system type story but quite liked the screenplay and direction. We ended up learning a bit more about the lesser known countries in Europe such as Sweden. All in all, this movie accurately depicts the wholesome treatment/abuse of women by society. The rape scene was painful to watch but that's how they wanted to portray it. The whole idea is to convince the viewer to accept the revenge as a justifiable action. That's why they make movies at the first place!
