Well, fwiw, I have watched the planes in the skies of FL, and at least some of the time, what the planes are spitting out is not just exhaust. A glint caught my eye a couple months back. I watched this plane flying with out an exhaust plume, and then it started 'dumping' a long cloud into the sky.

Sometimes, planes dump fuel before landing to remove weight.

I don't doubt for a second that that happens. I don't think this was the case, however, with this particular plane, which stopped the dumping, did a 180, and dumped some more....and then again. This happened...ummm....I think it ended leaving 5 or so 'lines in the sky' that were roughly parallel to each other. My point was that SOMETHING is getting dumped in the atmosphere that was not a simple contrail. If this was dumping fuel to remove weight, well....that was a helluva LOT of fuel to just dump. I wish I had a pic or video so you could see what was happening.

Wow, just think what would happen if a smoker
was to light his or her cigarette or pipe at the time
of fuel dumping... it could result in strange sounds! :cool2:

Just a note to warn that YT user MisterMachine1977, a serial uploader of 'strange sky sounds' videos he claims to have personally observed and recorded, is probably up to no good. I've caught him out on at least one occasion (he claimed to have personally observed and recorded such sounds from different locations a couple of days apart) and other YT users have noticed that many of his vids - allegedly capturing sounds from the same locale, South New Jersey - have the exact same sound as each other.

Which narrows out the occurenses so far this year even more, since that guy has most of them.

That being irrelevant though, the point is, does this mean that the sounds were part of a phase that is coming or has come to an end, or should we expect them to increase in numbers around the second part of the year? And if the later turns up to be true, then another question will arise, about what makes the second part of a year more desirable for these events to happen.

I don't think the phenomenon has been going on long enough for us to say that they only happen in the second half of the year, but it's an interesting observation all the same. I wonder what they'd look like spread out on a chart showing the month in which they occurred?

I've also been wondering where these strange sounds have gone! There seemed to be one or two occurrences, then a trickle, then a couple of 'spikes' with reports from all over the place... then silence. The silence is almost as eerie as the sound itself!

Given what was, and now being void of the harbinger sounds is strange, like a "calm before the storm".

Re: Strange sounds: Trumpets - Groaning - Scraping - In The Skies Around the World..

We were in Cherating (right next to ClubMed) Malaysia for a short seaside holiday at a pet friendly resort and as we were chatting with the owner and another guest out in the paddock we heard a very loud boom, which almost sounded like a super-sonic boom. But just 2-3 seconds later, there were 3 more booms of smaller and varying intensities and that got us thinking that this was no supersonic boom but quite possibly an exploding meteor or asteriod? Even the resort owner remarked 'what was that?', and she's used to hearing army jets training in the area from a nearby base.

Nothing could be seen in the partly cloudy sky and the time was roughly 9.30am +8gmt, June 11. Anyone has any idea of meteors or such moving over Southeast Asia during this period?

Here's a new one, AFAIK. In Iceland, apparently.

That description matches a few reports I've read of 'mystery booms' this year, including two I heard myself.

A fireball/meteor report was submitted here for June 7th from Vietnam: http://thelatestworldwidemeteorreports.blogspot.jp/

But nothing for Malaysia on June 11th. While netizens have continued submitting fireball reports to websites like the above one, I've noticed that, with the exception of one in Eastern Australia (which they explained away as a fallen satellite), meteor and fireball reports in the English-language media have dried up in the last couple of weeks.

Hello Kniall,

Thanks for the link on vietnam.
At least it tells us there were some space visiting activity in SEA around that period because unlike in the north and southern temperates we have not been hearing much on such phenomena in this region.

So these booms and fireballs can simply crop up anywhere, anytime and go unreported, unnoticed even by the authorities and experts - that's a scary thought, LOL

My partner and I later discussed about how people react to these phenomena cos even as it happened that morning, three of us wondered aloud as to what it was while the rest just continued chatting about their pets... hmmm.

There's this one: http://www.sott.net/article/263776-Strange-sky-sounds-heard-in-Curitiba-Brazil-Mississauga-Canada-and-Clearwater-Florida-on-9-July-2013

Can someone grab and post the actual videos? I don't know how.

Not sure if we have these from 2013:

Feb:
Have no idea why this guy relates the sounds to UFOs.

(This guy is freaked out as you see from his headline)

June:

July:

(Seems in this one the authorities tried the expedient of turning on air-raid sirens to cover the sound.)

August:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80GLxDf4Bgg

There was this next thing, too, with some kind of electrical arcing or plasma in the clouds. Could be evidence of the same phenomenon causing the sounds?

Hadn't seen this one from Nov 2012 in Finland with very strange oncoming storm. Totally freaky; makes you think of Die Gotterdammerung, Wagner and all that:

Here's one with "The Sky is Falling!" type of headline:

Another one I hadn't heard from 2012:

Another apocalyptic Bible Thumper:

It's interesting because they have a clip from Coast to Coast with Linda Moulton Howe.

Can someone grab and post the actual videos? I don't know how.

Example of how to do it:

1: Go to http://www.sott.net/article/263776-Strange-sky-sounds-heard-in-Curitiba-Brazil-Mississauga-Canada-and-Clearwater-Florida-on-9-July-2013 and go to the original youtube link by clicking the "YouTube" button down on the bottom right of the playing or started video in the article.

2: Now a second window opens with this actual original youtube video from the article: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEgZuTbkPd0

3: Now click the "share" button to the right of the "info" button on youtube.

4: Now click the "embed" button and copy the embed link that appears in the field below into your message here on the forum

5: That is how the embed link of that video looks like:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/nEgZuTbkPd0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

6: Now mark that whole link that you have copied into the message here on the forum and click our new "Insert Video Embed Code" button on the top left

7: Now press the "Preview" or "Post" button and there it is :)

Re: Strange sounds: Trumpets - Groaning - Scraping - In The Skies Around the World..

Just as a possibility, the sounds may be based on the principles of a plasma speaker:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_speaker

Plasma speakers are a form of loudspeaker which varies air pressure via a high-energy electrical plasma instead of a solid diaphragm. Connected to the output of an audio amplifier, plasma speakers vary the size of a plasma glow discharge, corona discharge or electric arc which then acts as a massless radiating element, creating the compression waves in air that listeners perceive as sound. The technique is an evolution of William Duddell's "singing arc" of 1900, and an innovation related to ion thruster spacecraft propulsion.

There's also this taken from the sound of ionized gas coming from interstellar space that sounds somewhat similar to these strange sounds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBtpzTMFAvE

Here's a more technical description of the plasma loudspeaker (fwiw):

I get the impression I had seen that video a few years back but without the creepy sounds. The storm is scary enough but I think the sounds were added on top.
