The Quote of the Day, July 27, 2011

(1/2) > >>

shellycheval:

As a long time reader (8-9 years) of SOTT, and a Forum and Fellowship member, I respect the incredible efforts and good will that go into creating and sustaining the SOTT news page.  I rarely see something that I think does not represent the spirit of the work done here.  But, I think the Quote of the Day:

--- Quote ---You have surpassed all nations in impertinent fables, in bad conduct and in barbarism. You deserve to be punished, for this is your destiny...They are, all of them, born with raging fanaticism in their hearts, just as the Bretons and the Germans are born with blond hair. I would not be in the least bit surprised if these people would not some day become deadly to the human race.
-   Voltaire on the Jews
--- End quote ---
while it may be intended to accurately criticize Israel as a state, and its Israeli/Zionist government and supporters, it reads as a condemnation of the average Jewish person/population, which I do not perceive as being an accurate representation of how SOTT feels about every Jewish person on the planet.  The absolutism of the language “They are, all of them, born with raging fanaticism in their hearts, just as the Bretons and the Germans are born with blond hair” weakens any rational argument that can be made against the factions of the Jewish culture, such as the Zionist party and its politics to whom, I agree wholeheartedly, that the quote can be applied to with good conscience.  It defines clearly most of the heads of the Jewish state, Zionists, many in their religious organization, and corporate entities, and the many average people who are their followers, but as it reads now, with no qualifiers, it can be understood to apply to all Jewish people of the world in general.

I am not Jewish, have no Jewish friends that I am aware of, did not grow up or live around Jews, and have no particular bias one way or another about Jews in general.  I agree that much of the Jewish culture is permeated with “impertinent fables, in bad conduct and in barbarism,” (probably due to the higher level of psychopaths in the Jewish population) but again, without some context added to qualify it, this quote reads as a condemnation of all people who call themselves Jews.

I am concerned with presenting good arguments, the use of language to promote truth, and the weakness of presenting an argument based on absolute statements that, taken out of context and misinterpreted, may represent SOTT as being hostile to the average, ignorant but not necessarily evil Jew.  Arguments, quotes, and language promoted by SOTT usually are carefully crafted to avoid being presented as blanket disapproval of groups of people who are composed of both evil and good representatives, so I was a little disconcerted with the strong wording of the quote and its presentation without any qualifying context.

Pashalis:
shellycheval I agree that Quote don't seems to be a very wise one. it looks like this quote promotes the thinking that all Jews are like that, wich is  dangerous and a thinking pattern that I can't support in any way.

I noticed that there was also something strange for me going on on SOTT a few days back:
This Article ("India: 1-Year-Old Boy with 34 Fingers and Toes Breaks World Record") was put into the "Don't Panic! Lighten Up!" section ,
after a member here pointed out that it is not funny, it was fixed.

mistakes happen of course and I hope those are mistakes. in other words I hope there is not a
infiltration of some sort going on (aka. some one is doing it with purpose to discredit SOTT)

IMO this could discredit SOTT and I hope the quote can be deleted.

Mod's note: Fixed quotes

Mr. Premise:
We removed it. Thanks for the vigilance!

Laura:

I agree that it should NEVER have been put on SOTT.  The reason given was that I had put it on my FB page.  Well, my FB page is not SOTT and I sometimes put things there to "stir the pot" and see what rises to the top.
