I'd like it better if people were able to make more melodic music with their vocal chords rather than imitating brain jellifying music.

Took me a while to find a good example, but how about Mongolian Throat Singing?

This is just beautiful

Always liked the music of Abbess Hildegard of Bigen

And finally, something completely different (closing music from the computer game Portal 2 - Capella style)

"there are things and aims and goals available to us, that we do not dream of even in our most courageous dreams."
I mean personal goals here. Often we are afraid to set an aim for ourselves because, in the moment, we cannot
imagine a way to reach it. I think that is a mistake. Let us set goals for ourselves, and no matter how ambitious they are, let us trust that sooner or later, if we persevere, the path itself will emerge.

As I think of you
From this dark century
I will always be
With generosity
That we both may share
The hope in hearing
That we're not just
Spirits disappearing.

Oh yeah, Tuvan throat singing is really cool.

Always liked the music of Abbess Hildegard of Bigen

Over the holidays I realized that I like choral, monastic type music. So this was a nice song to listen to, thanks.

Have you check the Voca People? They're truly amazing: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=voca+people&oq=voca+&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=c&gs_upl=5401l6600l0l9228l5l4l0l0l0l0l334l1101l2-2.2l4l0

Never heard of them, that was interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Found a great example of Tuvan throat singing by Huun huur tu.  I cannot sit still while listening to this one :)

More about Tuvan throat singing:

Quote from: _http://sarahwallinhuff.com/documents/tuvan-throat-singing.pdf
Dwelling in this natural haven, where their existence is dependent on the land and surrounding animals, the Tuvans and, thus, “Tuvan pastoral music, [are] intimately connected to an ancient tradition of animism, the belief that natural objects and phenomena have souls or are inhabited by spirits . . . According to Tuvan animism, the spirituality of mountains and rivers is manifested not only through their physical shape and location but also through the sounds they produce or can be made to produce by human agency. The echo off a cliff, for example, may be imbued with spiritual significance. Animals, too, are said to express spiritual power sonically. Humans can assimilate this power by imitating their sounds” (Scientific American, pg 80-82).
...
In the  pure nature of sound, any fundamental frequency, or  pitch, will inherently ring with a series of harmonics, specifically lined up in ascending order above the fundamental. “In normal speech and song, most of the energy is concentrated at the fundamental frequency, and harmonics are perceived as elements of timbre – the same quality that distinguishes the rich sound of a violin from the purer tones of a flute – rather than as different pitches. In throat singing, however, a single harmonic gains such strength that it is heard as a distinct, whistlelike pitch.”

One thing I wonder is whether or not the quality of the sound produced by the singers today is better or worse than it was 400-500 years ago when that music was first written. I suspect it is better today, only because there are more people to chose from to get 'the best' sound. But the sound today might also be completely different to what was originally intended by the composer.

I have been practicing throat singing on and off for over ten years. I can achieve the high whistling tones and the sub-fundamental "deep voice" as well. There is no way to describe how it feels to produce these sounds with your own voice. I've played around with beat-boxing but I never took it to the level as some of the people in these video clips. The range of sounds we humans can produce is amazing.

The interesting thing about throat singing is that it is all harmonics. One book I read on the subject said that a singer can't produce a certain harmonic until they can hear it. That made me think really hard about deep listening and finding new harmonics in pieces of music I had listened to many times. What is really cool is that you can record the throat singing, then open it in a program like Audacity and look at the spectral view of the waveform. You can actually see the harmonics that you're producing.
