You could see it also as a fun factor, choosing someone you like to be, as an ideal for example, or choosing an avatar which inspires you etc.

At least this is my point of view and it is fun to see other avatars and "fantasy" names.

If you like you can change that in your profile. And it would be only helpful, in most cases, to use the caption of the avatar with a note of your former name, so that others get not confused.
