Best food for a dog?

Recently a friend of mine fell in deep troubles, both personally and economically. She lost her job due to a new child being born, actually without a father. She has also a dog, a big one indeed, an Italian Sheep Dog - Maremma, and cannot take care of him all days just because he eats really a lot!

(He's in fact the exact copy of the dog standing upright in the 2nd picture, starting from the top of the page.)

...and no one in the surrounding area wants a dog big like that and of that breed.

I can assist by bringing from home all kinds of bones and meat he needs. What would be the best meat or food for him? The subject is very controversial among friends here, some say pork is no good, some says chicken is no good, and so on... I just know that he's very happy and full of energy after any kind of meat is being put in his dish, and he seems to deteriorate visibly when any kind of pre-packaged food is left after him, you know, they're so cheap and handy!

I've had experience only with cats, but never had a dog.

Please help!!!

some farms / butchers might sell a pet food product. I've seen this from two different places by me. both products were beef and: 75% lean meat, 10% organ meat, 15% suet/fat. Also it will be less expensive than normal ground beef - I think this is because the meat that is used does not meet health regulations for human consumption, so instead of tossing it out, it is sold as pet food at a discount.

Hi dantem, there is some info on this here - http://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,27321.msg333303.html#msg333303

Thanks for the hints and page redirection! :) Seems that there aren't particular restriction about the type of meat served, but the content of the package... ouch!
