Mars - 360-Degree Panorama from Curiosity
« on: August 14, 2012, 07:26:46 PM »
This was recently published:

_http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/13/3240137/360-degree-mars-panorama-curiosity-rover

...where one can click on full-screen and move around to see 360 degree of the land (from Curiosity's camera). It's "Google Street View" style.

I was trying to imagine what was it like when it was filled with water, once upon the time.

Very cool! Thanks ZS. :)

Very nice image. Curios what that black rectangle is on the Curiosity picture you included? It looks like it was added to the photo when you zoom in on it. Is it there to remove some instrument we are not meant to know about?

Huh. I didn't noticed that before. I'm not sure. It seems to be covering the solar panels or something (I've not found a name for that part of the rover). But it could be a gap in the pictures.

After checking this out on SotT - http://www.sott.net/articles/show/249697-A-View-of-Mars-The-Incredible-360-Degree-Panorama-from-Curiosity - pretty neat 360 at that, zoomed in and around, then asked my partner what this looked like, said it looked like a VW bug. Hmm, there are times when the imagination gets the best of one, often misinterpreting rational images for something else. Here is this example (black box, a few centimeters out from left upper corner 10:00 o'clock, ). In reality it is likely two rocks, a shadow, and a ground protrusion, however it sure made us laugh thinking someone really lost their VW on Mars and it was curiously found by curiosity.

I have come across obvious image manipulation for the image composite of Gale crater. I am disappointed!

why am I not suprised?
