(CNN) -- An explosion ripped through a fertilizer plant Wednesday night in West Texas and may have caused dozens of injuries, officials said.

A hospital in Waco, Texas, has been told to anticipate 100 injured people coming in from the fertilizer plant area, an official at the medical facility said. Glenn Robinson, CEO of Hillcrest Hospital, said a field triage station was being set up at the plant some 18 miles north of Waco after the Wednesday night explosion.

A photo after the explosion -- which reportedly happened around 7:50 p.m. (8:50 p.m. ET) -- showed a huge plume of smoke rising high into the air.

The West Fertilizer Plant is located about 20 miles north of Waco. A school and a nursing home are among the buildings near the plant, CNN affiliate KWTX reported.

Other authorities did not respond immediately to CNN's requests for information Wednesday night.

Tommy Alford, who works in a convenience store about three miles from the plant, told CNN that several volunteer firefighters were at the store when they spotted smoke.

Alford said the firefighters headed toward the scene and then between five and 10 minutes later, he heard a massive explosion.

This guy was filming the fire with his camera when the explosion happened

This site puts the casualties to 60 at least for now

I just watched the news on CBC and CTV and CNN Canada and none of them mentioned a number higher than 2 for casualties. But they said hundreds are injured.

I'm about 163 miles east of this town. Wow, April drop dead dates talked about by the C's is on target, here is another April date that occurred in TX at another Fertilizer plant in the 40's, over 500 killed.

Fire and Explosion , Texas City, TX, April 16 - 17th, 1947

I watched RT where they said that USGS estimated the explosion to equivalent 2.1 magnitude earthquake. There was also speculations that there's gonna be a lot more casualities. A firefighter interviewed compared the scene to bombings in Irak and Oklahoma City.

Was there notable explosion in Texas 1994/1995 winter? Maybe "this winter" related only to "NE United States" part of 'prediction'.

I watched the news right now, and they mentioned another, more "infamous" fire that happened in Waco, particularly "Waco massacre" that occurred on 19th of April, 1993. So, either this fire was intentional, as in sending a message, or it's the Universe that is sending a message. Either way, it does look like a good addition to a "drop dead" list.

Re: Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas

So I thought to myself "Yeah right, missile!" And after watching the video it does seem like something came from the left of the fire. Also, I'm unsure of the sound that comments are saying was a missile sound.

Edit added: Maybe there is a more logical explanation for what is seen in the video.

Yes, it is weird that the left part of the screen lights up before the explosion. Why should it?

Re: Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas

I don't hear the same whoosh sound in this video that was posted above.

Re: Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas

Very strange. Reminds me of the glare of the Russian meteorite explosion.

Re: Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas

The explosion is so extraordinary that the question is: can a factory of fertilizers explode like this? In the video it seems to me that it can be something that provoke this explosion, a bomb, a missile. But is the sound genuine? Is it another manipulation?
