I've suspected that the Russians foresaw the possibility of the present crisis. The probably had FSB units on the ground in case of such an eventuality. I find it coincidental that Strelkov was in FSB until March 2013, and then a year later finds himself in the position to take lead of the militias, unify the disparate groups, and turn them into a viable fighting force.
