Kuala Lumpur (AFP) - Malaysia Airlines said a flight carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing went missing early Saturday, and the airline was notifying next of kin in a sign it feared the worst.

The airline said flight MH370 disappeared at 2:40 am local time (1840 GMT Friday), about two hours after leaving Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30 am local time (2230 GMT Friday).

Ok, so how does a plane just "disappear"? I've really got no idea on this one. Is there any actual evidence to suggest that it crashed?

Well, just a tad more info in the following:

The plane lost communication two hours into the flight in Vietnam's airspace at 1:20 a.m. (18:20 GMT Friday), China's official Xinhua News Agency said. Vietnamese website VN Express said a Vietnamese search and rescue official reported that signals from the plane were detected about 120 nautical miles (140 miles; 225 kilometers) southwest of Vietnam's southernmost Ca Mau province.

Crash now confirmed:
The missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 carrying 239 people has crashed off the Tho Chu island in Vietnam, leading local daily Tuổi Trẻ reported today.

According to the report, the Vietnamese High Command of Navy issued a statement to confirm that the Boeing B777-200 aircraft went down some 300km off the island located near Cape Ca Mau in Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province.

The report added, however, that there are no reports of any casualties as yet.

MAS has yet to confirm the reports.

At a press conference earlier this afternoon, MAS group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said a search and rescue team is still trying to locate the missing aircraft.

He said the plane was last heard from when it was flying some 120 nautical miles off the coast of Kota Baru, near the South China Sea.

Jauhari also said no distress signal had been received as yet.
How is it possible not to send any distress signals when crashing a large airplane from high altitude? I wonder if something instakilled the electronics perhaps.

For now, just hope that the rescue mission goes well :(

AFP is running a live report of the accident here. And a Wiki page has also been created.

And the weather for that flight from KUL (Kuala Lumpur) to PEK (Beijing) was pretty clear.

From SOTT:
An unconfirmed report from a flight tracking website said the plane had plunged more than 200 metres and changed course in the last minute that it had transmitted data.

From Wikipedia:
At the time of its disappearance, the plane was carrying about 7.5 hours worth of fuel.

From the Sacramento Bee:
The plane "lost all contact and radar signal one minute before it entered Vietnam's air traffic control," Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of the Vietnamese army, said in a statement issued by the government.

Fuad Sharuji, Malaysian Airlines' vice president of operations control, told CNN that the plane was flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet (10,670 meters) and that the pilots had reported no problem with the aircraft.

Ok, so to me it sounds like something rather drastic and sudden happened to totally kill the electronic systems aboard the plane. The only thing I can think of that would accomplish that is an Electromagnetic Pulse. It seems unlikely that it could have been caused by the weather, as the atmosphere seems clear (thanks for the picture Vulcan).

So what could have caused an EMP? High Strangeness is always an option I guess, but still, why?

There could be an economic/political motivation to this. From Yahoo via AFP:
An accident would be a huge blow for the carrier, which has bled money for years as its struggles to fend off competition from rivals such as fast-growing AirAsia.

It recorded its fourth straight quarterly loss during the final three months of 2013 and warned of a "challenging" year ahead due to intense competition.

I think it's safe to say that anyone with enough money and motivation, could have caused an EMP one way or another during the flight. Hopefully further reports provide more data.

Yeah, I agree with Chu, while it's too early to tell and not enough data yet to tell with any high probability, overhead cometary fragment explosions in the atmosphere can and do cause Electromagnetic Pulses that could quickly take down all electronic systems on the aircraft (and shock waves and such, too, can then cause all sorts of problems).

If and when they find bodies, will be interesting to note their reported condition, where they are located, state of plane debris if any etc.

If recovered, black box recording might provide some info, assuming they reveal all the details. That didn't happen with AF447. Pilot error was blamed by Airbus in their report but that was strongly contested by other pilots.

This news is really shocking. Last night I had a dream witnessing Malaysia Airlines plane was hit by a comet-like explosion, and it plummeted down and crash. Then I woke up this morning and heard the sad news.

Well, it's hard to tell this early, but I'm willing to bet that what Joe wrote here in 2009 will be very close to what happened to this one too:

What are they hiding? Flight 447 and Tunguska Type Events

I was wondering if there was a link between comets and EMPs. A comet explosion as described in Joe's article would account for this situation.

Here is an extract from the book I'm finalizing. Those excerpts deals with the links between comets and EMP.

This media cover-up of the increase in cometary activity by conflating it with military missiles lends an almost prophetic tone to the following text written in 1996:

Victor Clube said:
the Christian, Islamic and Judaic cultures have all moved since the European Renaissance to adopt an unreasoning anti-apocalyptic stance, apparently unaware of the burgeoning science of catastrophes. History, it now seems, is repeating itself: it has taken the Space Age to revive the Platonist voice of reason but it emerges this time within a modern anti-fundamentalist, anti-apocalyptic tradition over which governments may, as before, be unable to exercise control. Cynics (or modern sophists), in other words, would say that we do not need the celestial threat to disguise Cold War intentions; rather we need the Cold War to disguise celestial intentions!

The problem is that, unlike conventional missiles, cometary bodies, because of their electric activity, have a strong electromagnetic signature that can trigger lightning bolts between incoming asteroids and the Earth’s surface that can fry electrical devices over a wide area. One naturally wonders if this is related to the media frequently reporting, since around 2008 , on the development of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons by the USA , Israel , China , South Korea and the usual suspect, Iran. The source mentioning the development of Iranian EMP weapons specifically states the following:

Shamah said:
An EMP is an above-atmosphere level detonation of a nuclear device that produces enough radiation to wreak havoc with electrical systems.

Because of the protection provided by our atmosphere, an overhead cometary explosion is a far more probable event than a direct impact and could easily be mistaken for an “above-atmosphere detonation”. And the EMP generated by such an explosion could, of course, be blamed on the ‘Iranian EMP missiles’. In addition to ‘disguising celestial intentions’, a cover story about Iranian EMP weapons would provide a casus belli for the US and Israel to attack Iran.

The recent series of ‘disclosures’ about new EMP weapons is all the more suspicious because the prime generators of electromagnetic pulses are nuclear weapons. This effect was already suspected by the time the Manhattan Project’s Trinity Test in the desert of New Mexico on July 16th, 1945 detonated the first atomic bomb. Their electronic equipment had been shielded because project scientist Enrico Fermi had predicted that an EMP would accompany the explosion. By the 1960s, the EMPs generated by nuclear explosions and their disruptive effects on electronic and electric equipment was being extensively measured and documented. Put simply, nuclear weapons are EMP weapons, an established fact for over half a century. Why then does the media depict EMP bombs as a ‘newly discovered’ weapon? Why all this fuss about half a dozen countries suddenly developing EMP bombs around the same time?

Here is another excerpt describing cometary action at a distance (discharge events). It applies here to industrial plumes but the same goes for airplanes that act as a bug in a bug zapper. The two electrodes of the bug zapper being here the Earth's surface and the ionosphere.

Another phenomenon is an apparent spike in unexplained surface-level explosions, one sub-set of which is explosions or fires at industrial plants. There were nearly 40 such hazardous incidents, including five at fertilizer plants, just between April and August 2013.

Before investigations are even begun, official explanations invoke similar causes each time: chemical reactions, accidents, defective equipment, human error, etc. However, one might wonder if cometary discharge or impact may be the cause for at least some of these explosions and fires. The illustration below shows how an industrial plume can act as an attractor for cometary discharge:

azf_plant_meteorite_cropped.jpg

Electric interactions between a meteor and a plant. (© Sott.net)

A (left illustration): A meteorite enters the atmosphere. Its (relative) positive charge pulls negative charges (free electrons) up from the plant and the metallic chimney. Those electrons are captured by the low-mobility smoke particles of the plume, making even more negative the charge of fumes that are already loaded with negative ions. A positive meteor and a negative plume would attract each other.
B (center illustration): When the electric charge difference is high enough and/or the distance small enough, a massive discharge would occur. An ascending lightning bolt (upwards electron transfer) might directly connect the chimney and its plume to the meteor.
C (right illustration): The lightning bolt leaves an ionized and negatively charged atmospheric trail that attracts what remains of the meteor towards the vicinity of the plant. Note that the meteor may have fragmented before reaching the ground.

Another evidence of the electromagnetic activity of comets is electrophonic sounds.

During the 1940s, some scientists started reconsidering the problem in terms of physics, and by the 1980s Australian physicist Colin Keay demonstrated that fireballs can indeed produce electrophonic sounds. Keay found that, in addition to generating light, fireballs also emit very low frequencies (VLF) , which travel at light speed , hence the simultaneous visual and auditory perceptions reported above. In 1988, Watanabe et al. achieved the first detection of VLF signal from a meteor fireball.

These VLF are due to turbulences generated in the geomagnetic field (i.e. Earth’s magnetic field) by the magnetic region of the fireball. This is not a mechanical phenomenon, but an electromagnetic one: the fireball not only creates turbulence in the surrounding air (i.e. a sonic boom), but also electromagnetic radiation, which creates turbulence in the surrounding geomagnetic field (VLF). However, VLF waves are far outside the human auditory range.

One of the best example of the high electric activity (and therefore magnetic activity) of comets is the very intense flare-up that occurred before Comet Schumaker Levy impacted Jupiter in 1994

Astronomers expected the encounter to be a trivial event. “You won’t see anything. The comet crash will probably amount to nothing more than a bunch of pebbles falling into an ocean 500 million miles from Earth.” Then came the encounter and an about face. As reported by Sky & Telescope, “When Fragment ‘A’ hit the giant planet, it threw up a fireball so unexpectedly bright that it seemed to knock the world’s astronomical community off its feet…”

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) detected a flare-up of fragment ‘G’ of Shoemaker-Levy long before impact at a distance of 2.3 million miles from Jupiter. For the electrical theorists this flash would occur as the fragment crossed Jupiter’s plasma sheath, or magnetosphere boundary.

So, yes a cometary EMP can very well bring a plane down. Did it?

So far the people of Malaysia is still in the dark on what happened to flight MH370. Malaysia Airlines had tweeted a statement that they are "accelerating every effort with all relevant authorities to locate the aircraft". At the same time, many are questioning the fact that there were no distress call at all. Here's an article from straitstimes.com: http://www.straitstimes.com/the-big-story/mh370-missing/story/missing-mas-plane-pilots-have-many-ways-make-sos-call-says-retired

"For long distance communication, he said they used HF radio communication which had a much wider range of over 1,609km.

Another option was to use the Controller-pilot data link communication (CPDLC) to declare an emergency.

"In this case, the B777-200 is equipped with the CPDLC. The pilots would have been able to communicate and overcome range problems, so this tells you something must have impeded them from making the mayday call," he told The Star Online.

Captain Lim said that at the reported 35,000ft that the MH370 flight had lost contact, the pilots would need around five minutes to bring it down to a safe level of 10,000ft.

He said that at this height, passengers would not need to use an oxygen mask, adding that this would have also given the pilots time to make the distress call.

The plane had just literally vanished from the radar screen.

Prayers to those onboard the aircraft, for their families and friends.

It is definitely starting to sound like something very powerful and sudden happened, and it happened in such a way that there was no prior awareness on the part of the crew; if there was, it was already too late: the electronics were dead. Very, very sad and scary.

There's a report from the NYT that

A 12-mile-long oil slick spotted between Malaysia and Vietnam on Saturday afternoon is thought to be the first sign that a missing Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 people aboard went down in the waters between southernmost Vietnam and northern Malaysia, according to Vietnam's director of civil aviation.
