Ukrainian serviceman released from prison in Donbass with Patriarch Kirill’s mediation
http://tass.com/world/920294

December 18, 2016 - A Ukrainian serviceman, Taras Kolodiy, who has been kept prisoner in Donbass for two years, was released on Sunday through the mediation of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Patriarchate’s press service said.

"On December 18, Ukrainian serviceman Taras Kolodiy, who had been taken prisoner during combat operations, was released in Donetsk. He was released to the Ukrainian side at the Yelenovka-Volnovakha checkpoint. His live and health are out of danger," the press service said.

The man was released without any preliminary conditions.

According to the press service, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill was asked to help release the man by Metropolitan Onufriy of Kiev and All Ukraine after the serviceman’s relatives had asked for his assistance. "His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia upheld the plea of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy and contacted people who could solve that matter," the press service said.

"Taras Kolodiy’s release is the result of the Church’s peacekeeping efforts towards the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and proves the high authority of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church," the press service said.

The Russian Orthodox Church "is raising its prayers to put an end to the fratricidal confrontation in Ukraine" and stands for the release of "people kept by both parties to the conflict."

"The moral authority of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church which unites the Ukrainian on both sides of the confrontation is a real tool that might promote national reconciliation in Ukraine," the Moscow Patriarchate said.

The attack was carried out with the support of mortars and artillery weapons, the LPR defense authorities said

LPR militias: Kiev forces fire over 150 shells near Kalinovka village
http://tass.com/world/920335

December 19, 2016 - Ukraine’s forces backed by artillery attempted an offensive near the Kalinovka village, firing more than 150 artillery shells at the positions of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic, the LPR defense authorities said on Sunday.

"The main attempt of offensive was made by a unit of Ukraine’s Armed Forces consisting of some 40 people with military hardware near the Kalinovka settlement. The attack was carried out with the support of mortars and artillery weapons from which more than 150 shells were fired at the people’s militia positions," an official told the LuganskInformCenter.

Earlier on Sunday, ten Ukrainian troops were killed and some 20 others were wounded during the offensive attempt. Two LPR servicemen were wounded and two more are missing.

The participants of the Contact Group on settlement in eastern Ukraine at the meeting in Minsk, Belarus, on August 26 declared an indefinite ceasefire in Donbass starting from September 1. This was the ninth attempt since autumn 2014 to observe the silence regime in the region. However, the shellings continue.

Since yesterday evening, reports have been incoming from the frontline in Lugansk that the Ukrainians have violated the Minsk Agreements for the nth time, this time shelling militia positions with artillery and attempting an offensive on the Uglegorsk and Debaltsevo fronts in the Lugansk People’s Republic.

Sudden Ukrainian offensive in Lugansk ends in heavy losses, retreat
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/12/sudden-ukrainian-offensive-in-lugansk.html

The attack has been halted, but firefights are ongoing. The attack was presumably being led by neo-Nazi volunteer battalions.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces shelled the residential area of Kalinovka near Debaltsevo 150 times with artillery prohibited by the Minsk Agreements before attempting to break through the defense positions of the Lugansk People’s Militia.

The head of the directorate of the LPR’s People’s Militia, Oleg Anashchenko, has reported from the scene of the battle: “UAF attempts to break through the defenses of the LPR in the Kalinovka and Logvinovo districts have ended in failure. Over the course of the poorly planned attempt at breaking through in the direction of Kalinovka, the enemy has suffered heavy losses and returned to its original positions to regroup forces, replenish its losses, and prepare for active combat operations. All attempts to penetrate our defenses have ended in complete failure for Kiev’s punitive forces.”

According to Ukrainian sources, five Ukrainian troops were killed and 26 were wounded. Reports have since come in that more than 35 have been wounded, most being evacuated to the military hospital while others could not be withdrawn from the battlefield due to intense artillery fire. Ukrainian volunteer Yurii Mysyagin from Dnepropetrovsk has suggested that the number of dead has risen to six. The official "Anti-Terrorist Operation" headquarters has released significantly lower figures, counting only five dead and six wounded.

Earlier, the Lugansk People’s Militia claimed that “no fewer than 30 of Kiev’s troops have been killed and no less than two armored vehicles have been destroyed.”

Several sources on both the Ukrainian and Donbass sides have suggested that the sudden Ukrainian offensive could have been connected to internal squabbles, namely, the Ukrainian state’s acquiring of the infamous oligarch Igor Kolomoysky’s Privatbank, Ukraine’s largest commercial credit institution.

Ukraine to completely nationalize Privatbank

Kolomoisky's Privatbank passes to Ukrainian government ownership
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/12/kolomoiskys-privatbank-passes-to.html

The Government of Ukraine has supported the proposal of the National Bank and the Financial Stability Board for the transition Privatbank to hundred percent state ownership. This was reported on the website of the Cabinet.

It is envisaged that the state, represented by the Ministry of Finance, will own 100 percent of the shares of Privatbank, and will guarantee the smooth functioning of the institution and preservation of assets of its clients.

National Bank Chairman Valery Gontareva and Finance Minister Alexander Danyluk informed the cabinet members that the private shareholders of Privatbank appealed to the government with a proposal that the government become full owner, in the interests of the bank's clients.

The transition period begins on December 19. The government has promised to ensure "a smooth transition with stable and normal operation of the institution for its customers."

It is noted that these actions are "taking place in coordination with international financial institutions and with their support." "In the government they are proceeding on the fact that this is the responsible decision to preserve Privatbank, and the entire banking system."

On October 16 Ukrainian media reported that the businessman Igor Kolomoisky and other shareholders have agreed to transfer Privatbank to the government after December 20. It was noted that the NBU forced the nationalization process, with the support of the presidential administration and the International Monetary Fund. At the same time Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman spoke against such a scenario, in connection with which the nationalization of the bank by the end of 2016 was called into question.

Prior to that, in October, it was reported that Privatbank, if it did not comply with a program of recapitalization, could be subject to nationalization. Then the plans of the Cabinet to complete the process within two weeks became known.

In August, the Pechersk Regional Court in Kiev accused officials of Privatbank of embezzling 19 billion hryvnia (about 765 million dollars) which had been allocated to refinancing.

Last year, the German periodical Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten suggested that Kolomoisky could arrogate part of the IMF's financial assistance aimed for the development of the Ukrainian economy.

Privatbank is the largest Ukrainian commercial credit institution. The bank serves 22 million customers.

FBI Pays A Visit To Well Known American Journalist Patrick Lancaster’s Mother In The United States

Journalist Patrick Lancaster harassed by FBI
http://novorossia.today/fbi-pays-visit-well-known-american-journalist-patrick-lancasters-mother-united-states/

18.12.2016 ~ A freelance journalist from the United States, Patrick Lancaster, well-known in Donbass, was subjected to the FBI harassment. Intelligence agents paid a visit to his mother who lives in the United States, in an attempt to find out where he was and what he was doing. He wrote about it on his page in the social network Vkontakte.

‘The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) is investigating me.

My mother just informed me that FBI agents came to her home. She said they told her there is no need for concern and then asked her very open questions about me. If she knew where I was? What I was doing there? What my job was? and How I got there? Etc. She told them I was a freelance journalist & for the past three years I had been reporting on the situation in the Crimea and covering the Ukraine War in Donbass. She told them that my reports have been unbiased and that Ukraine was not happy about my reports. She told them my Youtube channel, and that they called me. She gave them my number. They have not called. This was a very big surprise to me. I never thought in a million years that my mother would tell me the FBI came asking about me. The FBI going to question a journalist’s mother seems like they could be trying to intimidate that journalist, we will see. I am looking forward to speaking to them and getting more information on why they are investigating me. I have called them and now awaiting a response.

Ukraine to completely nationalize Privatbank

A further article, according to Bloomberg News, cites:

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-12-19/ukraine-tries-to-clean-up-its-banking-mess

By Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg News, Dec 19, 2016

Only one private bank in Ukraine was considered too big to fail, and on Sunday night, the Ukrainian government announced that it would be nationalized. The losses, however, are essentially being passed on to Ukrainian taxpayers; oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky and his partner Gennady Bogolyubov, the owners of Privatbank, have long since bled it dry.

It’s not clear yet how how exactly the nationalization will work. What is known is that shareholders asked the government to take over the bank, that Ukraine will issue bonds — initially 43 billion hryvnias ($1.6 billion) worth — to recapitalize it, and that its eurobond holders will be subject to a bail-in. The total capital shortage is estimated at 116 billion to 148 billion hryvnias. Former majority owners Kolomoisky and Bogolyubov are merely requested to make sure companies affiliated with them restructure their massive debts to the bank.

Privatbank, Ukraine’s biggest bank by assets, holds about 36 percent of all private deposits in the nation, about $5.9 billion. It has an extensive retail infrastructure, the country’s biggest ATM network, and its biggest internet and mobile banking operation; surprisingly, perhaps, it’s one of the most technologically advanced banks in Europe. Since 2014, the Ukrainian National Bank has shut down 82 banks in a major financial sector clean-up operation dictated by Ukraine’s financial backers, including the International Monetary Fund. It couldn’t do that to Privatbank without wreaking havoc on the national economy. As President Petro Poroshenko put it on Monday:

The entire financial and economic situation in the nation depends on the state of affairs in this bank, that’s how big, or, as managers put it, systemic it is. Because of this it doesn’t fit the Procrustean bed of standard bank recovery technology.

The bank’s problems have long been apparent. Like most Ukrainian financial institutions, except for the dwindling number of foreign bank subsidiaries, it was used by its owners mainly to provide resources to their other businesses. Fitch Ratings observed at the end of last year that 19 percent of Privatbank’s loans had been made to oil trading companies (oil trading is a major activity for Kolomoisky).

The related-party loans were tolerated under all previous governments, but that has become untenable under the IMF program, which offered Ukraine $17.5 billion in loans over three years starting in 2014. Besides, Kolomoisky, who funded the volunteer battalions that helped stop the spread of pro-Russian separatism in eastern Ukraine in 2014, fell out with Poroshenko and was stripped of the governorship of the Dnipro region, where Privatbank is headquartered.

The National Bank demanded earlier this year that the owners recapitalize Privatbank. They agreed, but made no discernible effort to do so. At the end of November, Fitch said the share of loans issued to oil trading companies reached 20 percent; 49 percent of Privatbank’s loans, according to the rating agency, had been made in foreign currency, most of them to entities that had no foreign currency revenues. At the end of June, 2016, Privatbank’s official exposure to related parties reached 109 percent of its capital, down from 119 percent at the end of 2015, but Fitch doubted that was the full picture, “given the limitations of beneficiary ownership disclosure in Ukraine.”

Kolomoiskiy and Bogolyubov realized their bank wouldn’t be allowed to fail. So, according to Sergei Fursa of Kiev investment bank Dragon Capital, the bank often lent to shell companies which passed on the money to Kolomoisky’s profitable businesses, also as loans. Despite ostensibly making deals with the national bank, Privatbank apparently served as a giant vacuum cleaner, sucking up deposits and refinancing, converting it into dollars and euros and pouring the cash into Kolomoisky’s business empire in a way that left the bank with a negative capital.

Given its long record of failure to hold oligarchs responsible for anything, the government’s decision to act was a bold move. It was also perhaps an unavoidable one, given the changing political climate and Ukraine’s lack of allies in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Ukraine’s champions such as Vice President Joe Biden are on their way out. “Trump’s arrival means no one will keep giving money to Ukraine for beautiful promises and kleptocrats’ tears over the ‘Maidan ideals,'” Serhiy Leshchenko, a former investigative journalist and now a corruption-fighting lawmaker, wrote on Facebook, referring to Ukraine’s Euromaidan anti-corruption revolution that took place three years ago. “Starting in January, everything will be very pragmatic, and the IMF program will only continue if its demands are unquestioningly met.”

The oligarch and the government have effectively made a deal, trading the stability of a too-big-too-fail bank for Kolomoisky’s too-big-to-jail status. As Leshchenko pointed out, “The time has come for him to get rid of a headache. As always, he solved his problem at the government’s expense.”

The government could still try to claw back the related-party loans and Kolomoisky could lose his Teflon coating, but Ukraine has not had much success in similar cases involving oligarchs and the former officials of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych’s government. Three years after the revolution, it’s clear that Ukraine, run by an oligarch-turned-politician Poroshenko, has picked up the bill for more than two decades of corrupt oligarchs’ excesses, telling people they have to tighten their belts in the name of painful but necessary reforms.

The West half-heartedly endorsed this, but it’s increasingly indifferent to the country’s plight. Next year will probably be worse for Ukraine than this one has been, with elections throughout Europe and an unsympathetic Trump administration in the U.S. The Privatbank nationalization is only the latest dose of misery.

Whatever the case, and the West had not "half-heartedly" endorsed the outcomes during Maidan, it is an awful mess for the people. With the IMF and the "reforms," not to mention what has happened in the East Ukraine, austerity sounds to be very server while the oligarchs make out like bandits and the ruling elite do what they always do when in power.

Ukraine’s Minister of Culture said that Scythian gold, which the District Court of Amsterdam ruled should be returned to Kiev instead of Crimea, will be exhibited in the Historical Museum of Kiev.

Scythian Gold to Be Exhibited in Kiev After Handover - Ukrainian Minister

Scythian gold, which the District Court of Amsterdam ruled should be returned to Kiev instead of Crimea, will be exhibited in the Historical Museum of Kiev, Ukraine’s Minister of Culture Yevhen Nyschuk said on Friday.

"The gold will be returned to Ukraine, to Kiev, to the Historical museum and will at once be exhibited," Nyschuk said in his interview with Hromadske Radio. The collection of the Scythian gold is part of the "Crimea. Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea" exhibition and was brought to the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam in early February 2014. The collection was provided by five museums, one in Kiev and four in Crimea. The dispute about the exhibition arose after Crimea reunified with Russia following a 2014 referendum. On December 14, 2016, the District Court of Amsterdam ruled that the Scythian gold artifacts should return to Kiev.

Russian Ministry of Culture stated that the court’s decision violated provisions of international law and principles of inter-museum exchange. According to the Russian ministry, the collection must return to Crimea where the Scythian gold was discovered and preserved for decades.

“I have decided to name the republican children’s hospital in the city of Grozny after Elizaveta [Glinka],” Kadyrov wrote in his Instagram account.
According to the Chechen leader, Dr. Liza dedicated her life to the most noble duty ever, which was saving children from conflict zones.

“Having an exemplary doctor’s education, she could have simply worked at a regular hospital, but she chose a complicated path of helping those, who had no hope for help at all,” Kadyrov said. “She will always be remembered by people.”

Dr. Liza, who is Executive Director of the Fair Aid charity fund, was on the list of passengers of the Tu-154 that crashed in the Black Sea near Sochi on Sunday morning. The charity fund later confirmed that Glinka flew to Syria onboard the Defense Ministry’s plane.

Six LPR soldiers died in wake of Kiev’s attack, seven sustained injuries. They were taken to hospitals and their lives are out of danger. Two servicemen are still unaccounted for.

A heavy fighting erupted on December 18 in vicinity of Debaltsevo as Nazi Ukrainian armed forces attacked LPR positions in Debaltsevo area. FULL MILITARY SITUATION REPORT/~ MAJ. ANDREY MAROCHKO ~ The situation along the contact line has not changed significantly and remains tense

Military Situation Report From Our Sister Republic Lugansk, With Deadline For Ceasefire At “ZERO” Hour, The Nazi Ukraine Junta Continue To Launch Bombs Onto Civilian Areas
http://novorossia.today/military-situation-report-sister-republic-lugansk-deadline-ceasefire-zero-hour-nazi-ukraine-junta-continue-launch-bombs-onto-civilian-areas-video/

In spite of all reached agreements about the «Regime of silence» entering into force at 00:00 on December 24, 2016, the Nazi Ukrainian Junta Military continue shelling the territory of the LPR and provoking the LPR units to respond fire.

In particular, over the past day, the AFU 12 times shelled the LPR positions in the area of the localities Kalinovka, Kalinovo, Sokolniki and Prishib. The enemy used in the shelling 82 and 120mm mortars, infantry fighting vehicles, grenade launchers and small arms.

On the eve of the agreement on the «regime of silence» entering into force at 00:00 on December 24, units of the 46th battalion of the 10th mountain assault brigade reportedly seized the locality of Novoluganskoe which is situated in the so-called «gray zone» in the territory controlled by Ukraine. Thus, the Ukrainian criminal command continues to pursue the goal of a military solution to the conflict in Donbass and the further destabilization of the situation along the contact line.

The Ukrainian criminal authorities continue to strengthen the group of their troops on the contact line. To carry out provocations, in the area of the locality of Zhyoltoye, there was delivered a mobile armed group, including seven infantry fighting vehicles, of the 14th brigade.

We continue to receive information about the low morale of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the ATO area. Recently, a state of alcoholic intoxication has become the norm for the AFU troops. In particular, the military personnel of the 46th separate special purposes battalion of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade, stationed in the locality of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut), had massive quantities of booze, in which criticized in the unflattering way, to put it mildly, the Nazi AFU command.

The LPR People’s Army units continue to have classes to improve the field training and combat readiness. In accordance with the training plan, in the People’s Army units, there are held methodological and training sessions with younger specialists of the engineering and intelligence units.

I would like to assure all of the public that we will continue to abide by all agreements reached in Minsk. Our actions are aimed at resolving the conflict in Donbass in a peaceful way but, in the event of aggravation of the situation, the LPR People’s Army reserves the right to adequately respond to provocations of the Ukrainian criminals.

Moscow's Dorogomilovsky Court recognized the 2014 events in Ukraine a coup d'etat, according to a RIA Novosti correspondent.

Moscow Court Recognizes Events in Kiev in 2014 Coup
https://sputniknews.com/russia/201612271049031276-russia-ukraine-court-coup/

Moscow's Dorogomilovsky Court upheld the lawsuit of former Ukrainian lawmaker Volodymyr Oliynyk and recognized the 2014 events in Ukraine a coup d'etat, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Tuesday.

During the consideration of the lawsuit, Judge Anna Shipikova questioned former senior officials of Ukraine, who headed the presidential administration, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Interior Ministry and the country's Security Service. All witnesses stated that they unequivocally regard the events that occurred in Kiev in 2014 as an unconstitutional coup. They said the European Union threatened to change power in Ukraine in case of refusal to sign an association agreement with the EU. In turn, former head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Oleksandr Yakimenko said in court that all the events on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) had been led by US officials.

Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) stated that the mechanism of all-for-all prisoner exchange, which has been included in the Minsk protocol on the settlement of the conflict in Donbass, does not work.

All-for-All Prisoner Exchange Mechanism Not Implemented in Donbass
https://sputniknews.com/europe/201612271049036808-donetsk-all-for-all-prisoner-exchange/

The mechanism of all-for-all prisoner exchange stipulated in the Minsk agreements on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is not implemented in the Donbass region, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said Tuesday.

"The mechanism of 'all-for-all' [exchange], which has been included in the Minsk protocol — does not work. It does not work, because Ukraine's President [Petro Poroshenko] and his authorities are helpless in the issue and artificially protract the Minsk process," Alexander Zakharchenko told reporters.

He added that on Tuesday, the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass had transferred two female prisoners to Kiev as a gesture of goodwill on a unilateral basis, and expressed hope that Ukraine would fulfill its promises and return 15 people to Donbass before the New Year.

We are ready to accept everyone, they will give. At the same time our gesture of goodwill shows that we are interested to return our people back like no one else. And the 'all-for-all' mechanism should be implemented rigorously. We are ready to communicate with any conscious people, who understand that it is very important. We are open for a dialogue," Zakharchenko added.

Petro Poroshenko has signed the law on 2017 state budget of Ukraine, that envisages 3 percent deficit of national GDP and a raise in defense expenditures to 5.2 percent of GDP.

Ukrainian President Raises 2017 Defense Spending
https://sputniknews.com/europe/201612261049019080-poroshenko-raises-defence-spending/

The law on 2017 state budget of Ukraine, that envisages 3 percent deficit of national GDP and a raise in defense expenditures to 5.2 percent of GDP from the last year's 5 percent was signed on Monday by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

“[The defense expenditures] are primarily focused on the funding of the Armed Forces of Ukraine including not only the fixation of financial, health, clothing and food security, but also the state defense order,” Poroshenko said in a statement published on the president's website.

Poroshenko also signed laws that raised minimum wage in the country to 3,200 hryvnias ($120) and increased the wages for state coal mining employees.

The 2017 state budget was approved by the Ukrainian parliament Verkhovna Rada on Wednesday with 274 out of 450 votes in favor. The Ukrainian government based the budget on a 8.1 percent inflation forecast.

The 2016 budget had a deficit of 3.7 percent GDP and an expected inflation rate of 12 percent.

With all the action in Syria, the Ukraine is no longer a subject for discussion in the West. In Russia, where the Ukraine is still a major problem looming on the horizon, and where some 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees are settling in, with no intentions of going back to what’s left of the Ukraine, it is still actively discussed. But for the US, and for the EU, it is now yet another major foreign policy embarrassment, and the less said about it the better.

Ukraine in Full-Blown Collapse: Deep-seated Economic, Social Crisis and Environmental Crisis
http://www.globalresearch.ca/ukraine-in-full-blown-collapse-deep-seated-economic-social-crisis-and-environmental-crisis/5564916

In the meantime, the Ukraine is in full-blown collapse—all five glorious stages of it— setting the stage for a Ukrainian Nightmare Before Christmas, or shortly after.

Phase 1. Financially, the Ukrainian government is in sovereign default as of a couple of days ago. The IMF was forced to break its own rules in order to keep it on life support even though it is clearly a deadbeat. In the process, the IMF stiffed Russia, which happens to be one of its major shareholders; what gives?

Phase 2. Industry and commerce are approaching a standstill and the country is rapidly deindustrializing. Formerly, most of the trade was with Russia; this is now over. The Ukraine does not make anything that the EU might want, except maybe prostitutes. Recently, the Ukraine has been selling off its dirt. This is illegal, but, given what’s been happening there, the term “illegal” has become the stuff of comedy.

Phase 3. Politically, the Ukrainian government is a total farce. Much of it has been turned over to fly-by-night foreigners, such as the former Georgian president Saakashvili, who is a wanted criminal in his own country, which has recently stripped him of his citizenship. The parliament is stocked with criminals who bought their seat to gain immunity from prosecution, and who spend their time brawling with each other. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk was recently hauled off the podium by his crotch; how dignified is that? He seemed unfazed. Where are his testicles? Perhaps Victoria Nuland over at the US State Dept. is keeping them in a jar. This sort of action may be fun to watch on Youtube, but the reality is quite sad: those who “run” the Ukraine (if the term still applies) are only interested in one thing: stealing whatever is left.

Phase 4. Ukrainian society (if the term still applies) has been split into a number of warring factions. This was, to some extent, inevitable. What happens if you take bits of Poland, Hungary, Romania and Russia, and stick them together willy-nilly? Well, results may vary; but if you also spend $5 billion US (as the Americans did) turning the Ukrainians against Russia (and, since they are mostly Russian, against themselves), then you get a complete disaster.

Phase 5. Cultural collapse is quite advanced. The Ukraine once had the same world-class educational system as Russia, but since independence they switched to teaching in Ukrainian (a made-up language) using nonexistent textbooks. The kids have been taught a bogus history hallucinated by rabid Ukrainian nationalists. They’ve been told that Russia is backward and keeping them back, and that they deserve to be happy in the EU. (Just like the Greeks? Yeah…) But now the population has been reduced to levels of poverty not commonly seen outside of Africa, and young people are fleeing, or turning to gangsterism and prostitution, to merely survive. This doesn’t make for a happy cultural narrative. What does it mean to be “a Ukrainian” now? Expletives deleted. Sorry I asked.

Now, here’s what it all really means. With so much going wrong, the Ukraine has been unable to secure enough natural gas or coal supplies to provide a supply cushion in case of a cold snap this winter. A few weeks of frosty weather will deplete the supply, and then pipes will freeze, rendering much of the urban areas unlivable from then on (because, recall, there is no longer any money, or any industry to speak of, to repair the damage). That seems bad enough, but we aren’t quite there yet.

You see, the Ukraine produces over half of its electricity using nuclear power plants. 19 nuclear reactors are in operation, with 2 more supposedly under construction. And this is in a country whose economy is in free-fall and is set to approach that of Mali or Burundi! The nuclear fuel for these reactors was being supplied by Russia. An effort to replace the Russian supplier with Westinghouse failed because of quality issues leading to an accident. What is a bankrupt Ukraine, which just stiffed Russia on billions of sovereign debt, going to do when the time comes to refuel those 19 reactors? Good question!

But an even better question is, Will they even make it that far? You see, it has become known that these nuclear installations have been skimping on preventive maintenance, due to lack of funds. Now, you are probably already aware of this, but let me spell it out just in case: a nuclear reactor is not one of those things that you run until it breaks, and then call a mechanic once it does. It’s not a “if it ain’t broke, I can’t fix it” sort of scenario. It’s more of a “you missed a tune-up so I ain’t going near it” scenario. And the way to keep it from breaking is to replace all the bits that are listed on the replacement schedule no later than the dates indicated on that schedule. It’s either that or the thing goes “Ka-boom!” and everyone’s hair falls out.

How close is Ukraine to a major nuclear accident? Well, it turns out, very close: just recently one was narrowly avoided when some Ukro-Nazis blew up electric transmission lines supplying Crimea, triggering a blackout that lasted many days. The Russians scrambled and ran a transmission line from the Russian mainland, so now Crimea is lit up again. But while that was happening, the Southern Ukrainian, with its 4 energy blocks, lost its connection to the grid, and it was only the very swift, expert actions taken by the staff there that averted a nuclear accident.

I hope that you know this already, but, just in case, let me spell it out again. One of the worst things that can happen to a nuclear reactor is loss of electricity supply. Yes, nuclear power stations make electricity—some of the time—but they must be supplied with electricity all the time to avoid a meltdown. This is what happened at Fukushima Daiichi, which dusted the ground with radionuclides as far as Tokyo and is still leaking radioactive juice into the Pacific.

And so the nightmare scenario for the Ukraine is a simple one. Temperature drops below freezing and stays there for a couple of weeks. Coal and natural gas supplies run down; thermal power plants shut down; the electric grid fails; circulator pumps at the 19 nuclear reactors (which, by the way, probably haven’t been overhauled as recently as they should have been) stop pumping; meltdown!

If this winter stays very, very warm, then the “19 Fukushimas” scenario just may be averted. This is not impossible: we’ve been seeing one freakishly warm winter after another, and each passing month is setting new records. The future is looking hot—as in very warm. Let us pray that it doesn’t also turn out to be hot—as in radioactive.

With Another Disastrous Plan Of Attack And More Dead Nazi Ukraine Soldiers, The Kiev Regime Still Unleashes Heavy Weapons Fire During New Year’s Weekend ! (Military Report Basurin )
http://novorossia.today/155703-2/

MILITARY SITUATION REPORT/VIDEO COL. BASURIN) In spite of the established «regime of silence», over the past day, the Nazi Ukrainian Junta military violated the ceasefire 473 times, having launched on the territory of the Republic 90 82 and 120mm mortar shells and 323 shells from grenade launchers of different types. In addition, the enemy used in the shelling infantry fighting vehicles and small arms.

The Ukrainian terrorists Gruzevich, Nikolyuk, Sokolov and Delyatitsky shelled the following localities of the Republic: Zaytsevo, Gorlovka, Shirokaya Balka, Verkhnetoretskoye, Vasilyevka, Krutaya Balka, Yasinovataya, Alexandrovka, Leninskoye, Sakhanka and Trudovskiye in the Petrovsky district of Donetsk city.

As a result of the shelling of our positions with grenade launchers, there was killed one soldier of the DPR people’s Militia.

Our intelligence continues to record the strengthening of the AFU positions near the contact line.
•In Elizavetovka (18 km away from the contact line), there was detected the arrival of three MLRS «Uragan»;
•In Starognatovka (4.5 km away from the contact line), there were detected two 152mm motorized howitzers «Akatsia».

The data about the Minsk Agreements violations were passed to representatives of the JCCC and the OSCE mission.

The ceasefire agreed in Minsk format does not stop the Ukrainian Junta military from committing armed provocations on the eve of the New Year holidays. Once again, we note the revitalization of the activity of the Special Operations Forces of the Nazi Ministry of Defense of Ukraine near the contact line in order to commit provocations. In particular, yesterday, near the locality of Krutaya Balka, a subversive group of the enemy, including up to ten men supported by mortars and small arms, attempted to break through our positions. As a result of being blown up on a mine field, while approaching the DPR Armed Forces positions, three Nazi AFU soldiers were killed, with the other retreating in panic to their original positions.

Meanwhile, the psychological operations forces of Nazi Ukraine continue to carry out the information propaganda work among the population on the Ukraine Junta Army (AFU)-occupied controlled territories and in the seized localities in the «gray zone». It has become known that in the localities Granitnoye, Novoluganskoye, Pischevik and Pavlopol, the Ukrainian Junta propaganda experts are carrying out the explanatory work among the local residents, trying in vain to explain why the Ukrainian Junta military are occupying their homes and forcing them to leave their towns, blaming the DPR Armed Forces for all the troubles.

Military Discipline Violations, Crushed On The Battlefields, Morale On The All Time Low The Ukraine Junta Military Is Out Of Control (Military Report Maj. Marochko)
http://novorossia.today/155711-2/

(MILITARY SITUATION REPORT/ VIDEO MAJ. MAROCHKO ~ Due to the frequent cases of the military discipline violations in the Nazi Armed Forces of Ukraine, the higher headquarters inspections have been sent to the number of units. It has become known that in the 24th brigade arrived a commission to investigate crimes related to theft and sale of petroleum products, clothing and food, as well as of extortion of money by the commanders from the personnel on the eve of the New Year holidays.

In addition, according to intelligence reports, there is a decrease in the level of discipline in the Nazi Ukrainian military units, which is especially manifested on the eve of the New Year’s holidays. In particular, this week, in the 14th and 54th brigades there have been revealed over 10 cases of unauthorized leave of temporary deployment points by the Ukrainian Junta military. The system of fines introduced in the Nazi Ukraine Army (AFU) (40,000 UAH, or 6,800 UAH of monthly deduction from the money allowance within half a year) for the use of alcohol, does not bring the desired results. These facts indicate that the AFU are demoralized, and the personnel are unwilling to fight.

****

The situation on the contact line has not changed significantly and remains tense. Over the past day, the Ukrainian Nazi militants eight times violated the ceasefire, having launched on the territory of the Republic over 340 shells. Listed areas that were hit, Nazi Ukraine military shelled the positions of the People’s Army in the area of the localities Smeloye, Frunze, Kalinovka and Sanzharovka. The Kiev Junta military continue to grossly violate the Minsk Agreements, using prohibited weapons, such as 82mm mortars, infantry fighting vehicles, automatic and anti-tank grenade launchers.

The Ukrainian Junta military do not stop attempts to resolve the conflict by force, as well as to provoke the LPR People’s Army units to open and return fire. In particular, yesterday, a mobile subversive group of the enemy made an attempt to penetrate the territory of the LPR in the Debaltsevo direction, in order to find a gap in the People’s Army defense. As a result of this stupid provocation, the Nazi Ukraine Junta Army ( AFU ) lost three soldiers.

The Ukrainian command continues to strengthen the positions on the contact line with the Ukrainian army units, including the nationalists. In particular, in the locality of Schastye arrived several groups of the Nazi Ukrainian Volunteer Corps «Right Sector» units.

In addition, at the Nazi Ukraine Army( AFU ) positions near the checkpoint «Stanitsa Luganskaya» arrived the military of the special purposes company of the 3rd operative brigade of the National Guard of Junta Ukraine.

In our turn, I would like to state that we are ready to solve the conflict in Donbass by peaceful means, and strictly observe the Minsk Agreements. But in the event of their failure by the Ukrainian Junta side and the aggravation of the situation, the LPR People’s Army reserves the right to liberate, by resolute actions, the territories occupied by the Kiev bandits.

Ukrainian oligarch, Igor Kolomoisky’s, ‘Ukraine Today’ closes its doors for good after a quick two year stint working as an anti-Russian propaganda channel. Kolomoisky is in the top 5 richest people in the Ukraine, and owns other media outlets, including the international Jewish News One, reporting on Israeli News. Russia's Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, answers questions in her weekly briefing in relation to this.

It is reported that the Kiev government is set to nationalise Kolomoisky’s PrivatBank – the country’s biggest privately owned bank by assets, and its biggest retail bank, which holds a third of Ukraine’s private deposits.

In 2014, Kolomoisky played a key role in the war in the Donbass, funding right wing militias, to fight the militias of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. He maintained an iron grip on the city of Dnepropetrovsk, of which he had been appointed governor by the Maidan government shortly after the February 2014 coup.

Taking PrivatBank out of Kolomoisky’s control deprives him of a bank he has used as a cash cow to finance his various pseudo-political activities.

January 03, 2017 - On the eve of the visit of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Austria, the future OSCE Chairman, Sebastian Kurz to Mariupol on 3-4 January, there is a growing number of bombardments and armed provocations on the southern borders of the Republic. Thus, Ukraine demonstrates to the world community and confirms its aggressive attitude to resolve the conflict.

In this context, we urge the international humanitarian organizations to influence the Ukrainian authorities and prevent another round of the escalation of the conflict in Donbass.

Crimea’s incorporation into Russia was legitimate, leader of France’s National Front, Marine Le Pen, has said

Crimean Reunification with Russia was legitimate, Marine Le Pen
http://novorossia.today/reunification-with-russia-was-legitimate-marine-le-pen/

“I do not think that (Crimea’s) reunification (with Russia) was illegitimate,” she told the BFM TV network on Tuesday. “A referendum was organized, and residents of Crimea voted to join Russia. I see no grounds whatsoever to question this referendum.”

The Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, a city with a special status on the Crimean Peninsula, where most residents are ethnic Russians, refused to recognize the legitimacy of authorities brought to power amid riots during the coup in Ukraine in February 2014.

Crimea and Sevastopol adopted declarations of independence on March 11, 2014. They held a referendum on March 16, 2014, in which 96.77% of Crimeans and 95.6% of Sevastopol voters chose to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the reunification deals March 18, 2014.

Ukraine, the US and the EU refused to recognize Crimea’s independence and its incorporation into Russia.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen could be banned from entering Ukraine for five years after defying Kiev’s claim to the Russian-majority region of Crimea, a Ukrainian security official said Wednesday.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has requested a permit from the national Foreign Ministry to ban the leader of the National Front party from coming to Ukraine after she argued Crimea became an integral part of Russia after voting in a 2014 referendum.

"If our call to ban Mrs. Le Pen from entering Ukraine will be backed by the Foreign Ministry we will decide how many years restrictions will last. Any term can be agreed, up to five years," the SBU chief of staff, Oleksandr Tkachuk, told the local news agency UNIAN.

Super Express, a Polish tabloid, said it had contacted Komorowski who told them he had been admitted for a routine medical check and promised to update media on his health once results were known.

Komorowski served as president of Poland from 2010 to 2015. He took over after his predecessor, Lech Kaczynski, died in a plane crash near the Russian city of Smolensk.

Last year, Warsaw authorities celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Palace of Culture and Science, a monolithic, 42 story, 778 ft tall Stalinist high-rise in the heart of Warsaw. The building's controversial history has led to conflicting attitudes among Poles: some value it as a historical landmark; others call it a relic of Soviet domination.

The Palace of Science and Culture continues to hold the record as the tallest building in Poland. At any one time, only a few dozen of its 3,288 rooms and offices are occupied by companies and public organizations. The Palace is a major cultural center, and a regular home to concerts, theater performances and film screenings. As its name implies, it is also a major academic and scientific center. It houses libraries, scientific institutions, and academic conference halls belonging to the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The building's architectural style has been described as a mix of Polish historicism and American art deco, although it was designed by Soviet architect Lev Rudnev, and the building is widely considered as the eighth, 'lost sister' to Moscow's Stalinist Seven Sister skyscrapers. As expected, the building's roots in the Soviet period have led to public debates about whether the building is worth the upkeep, or whether it should be dismantled and replaced with something modern.

Origins & Construction: Polish Architects Insist on Dizzying Heights
https://sputniknews.com/art_living/201701041049254621-palace-of-culture-and-science-fate/

The construction of the Palace of Culture and Science began in May 1952. The building was officially conceived as a gift to the 'brotherly Polish people' from the people of the Soviet Union. As the term implies, design and construction expenses were covered by the USSR, and an estimated 5,000 Soviet construction workers and engineers joined 4,000 Polish ones to complete the project over a three year timeframe.

As a recent RIA Novosti article on the building recalls, even at the planning stage, two questions were at the forefront: the building's ideological significance, and heated debates surrounding its design.

Officially, the idea for the skyscraper was thought to have been conceived personally by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin; it was first discussed with Polish authorities during a visit to Warsaw by Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov in 1951. Warsaw chief architect Josef Sigalin was informed of the proposal, and Polish architects were soon tasked with coming up with several possible locations for the building, and providing the chosen territory with the necessary infrastructure, including electricity, water and accommodation for the Soviet construction workers. Unsure of how the final design would look, architects oriented their proposals around the then-new Moscow State University building.

The building's impressive height owes itself to intense lobbying by Polish architects. At the design stage, Soviet architects proposed a height of just 120 meters, but Sigalin and his colleagues insisted that it be much taller, settling on 237 meters, including the Palace's spire. This would make the Palace of Culture and Science taller than all of the Seven Sisters in Moscow, with the exception of Moscow State University, which edged out the Palace by just three meters. Polish architects were also able to successfully incorporate elements of Polish national architecture into the skyscraper's 'Stalinist Gothic' look.

The building was designed and redesigned repeatedly. The final proposal came to include everything but the proverbial kitchen sink, featuring scientific, research, museum, exhibition and theater complexes, as well as a Palace of Youth.

Following its completion in July 1955, the building, which housed the Polish-Soviet Friendship Society, became a must-see destination for foreign officials and tourists. The building featured the tallest viewing platform in the country on its 30th floor. In 1955, the building was unofficially inaugurated when it hosted the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the Palace hosted historic concerts by artists including Marlene Dietrich, Yves Montand and Leonard Cohen. The Rolling Stones held their first concert in an Eastern Bloc country at the Palace in 1967. The building was visited by leaders including Nikita Khrushchev and Ho Chi Minh, and was rumored to have been greatly admired by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

Location, Location, Location

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, as Warsaw was painstakingly rebuilt from total devastation caused by the Nazi occupation, city architects came to terms with an odd fact: the Polish capital did not have a city center as such. The old city's Castle Square, the historic square in front of the Royal Castle, is widely considered as a central tourist attraction. But as RIA Novosti pointed out, it is near the Stalinist high-rise that the bus stop simply called 'Center' is located. The Palace is often the first tourist photo snapped in the Polish capital, and draws attention to itself for those arriving at the Warszawa Centralna Railway Station.

The Palace has become a favorite landmark of souvenir makers, with shops featuring magnets, cards and miniatures of the building, in an assortment just as wide as trinkets featuring other popular locations, including the Old Town, Sigismund's Column, the National Stadium and the Warsaw Barbican.

The More Things Change…

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, a competition was announced to redevelop the Palace, but none of its radical proposals ended up getting implemented. Until the present, the building has remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of the removal of a dedication to Stalin and a few minor design elements.

The Palace is owned by the city of Warsaw; its halls, once filled with references to Polish and Soviet socialism, now house corporate offices, shops, travel agencies, restaurants, several theaters, exhibitions and the offices of research institutes and universities. The building's central location, transport accessibility, and wide use as a landmark that is visible from across much of the city, makes it a popular location. However, for some the building's legacy continues to generate resentment. In the 2000s, then-Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski became one of the most active proponents of the building's demolition. In 2008 he suggested that demolishing the Palace of Culture and Science and replacing it with a green area and a pond "would do more good for the residents of Warsaw" than keeping it in place. In 2009, Sikorski tried to connect the demolition with the anniversary of the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. He tried again in 2012, proposing the creation of a Central Park of Warsaw, saying the building was uneconomical, energy-inefficient, and expensive to repair.

Polish media soon began poking light fun at the politician, comparing him with Ancient Roman senator Cato the Elder, who finished all his speeches in the Senate with the phrase "Furthermore, I consider that Carthage must be destroyed," with the Palace taking the place of Carthage in this case.

Sikorski's proposals were met with opposition among city residents. For some time, at bus stops and on building walls, graffiti appeared depicting the Palace and the phrase 'Gifts are not returned'. Other, less radical ideas have been floated, from proposals to repaint the building, to one proposing complementing it with a chic hotel, to another suggesting that the building be surrounded with ivy. After each proposal, local media queries Poles' views on the ideas, with the option 'leave it alone' always coming out on top. Right-wing organizations regularly hold campaigns against the Palace, explaining that it is really a "symbol of Polish dependence on the USSR," and that it was built so that Poles "never forget their dependence on the Soviet empire."

These appeals have been met with a response from Polish historical heritage laws. In 2007, the building was entered into the registry of monuments. That decision led to an outcry from some media, cultural and academic figures, and calls for the president to hold discussions or even a referendum on the building's fate. Others, however, including architects and art historians, wholeheartedly support the legal protections, saying that the building has already lost the integrity of some of its design elements, and that it is now the last major surviving example of socialist architecture in the Polish capital.

Kurz added that calls by Ukraine to deploy an armed O-S-C-E mission to pro-Russian regions need to be realistic. Pro-Russian forces have strongly rejected the idea. I watched a part of it yesterday, thought it was pretty interesting. I read a Dutch article about it and it was mentioned that one of the things he said was that while everything was going on he was able to follow the Dutch media and he noticed how far away from the truth their reports are. Nothing but lies, he said. "It's not about Russian aggression. What the media says is simply not true," he also mentions. This comes from someone who actually was in Donbass and saw it all happen! All the media does is parrot lies.

On another note, two independent Dutch journalists, Michel Spekkers and Stefan Beck have been to Donbass, and have recently left and will probably report their work at some point. I've noticed that some people on social media appear to see how the situation in Ukraine is not how the media presents it as, which is a good thing.

The authorities just confiscates all their research material when they returned in the Netherlands. There is also no guarantee that they will get any of it back.

Dutch Journalist Michel Spekkers, and MH17 Confiscation in Netherlands, my Statement

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/01/07/dutch-journalist-michel-spekkers-and-confiscation-in-netherlands-my-statement/
Graham Phillips

Dutch journalist Michel Spekkers (pictured) has just returned to the Netherlands, after a week of working in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Upon his return into Schiphol airport, after having been contacted initially by, as I understand, the MH17 investigation team, after having tweeted about having removed items from the crash site, he was questioned by Dutch police, and all the MH17 items, plus equipment pertaining to his work – camera equipment, cards, even phone, was seized – against his will, naturally.

Michel has written about this on his Twitter account (in Dutch).

As I would with any journalist wanting to come to report the truth from Donbass, I helped Michel, and colleague, Stefan Beck, with advice on accreditation etc, and when they arrived here, we spent the first few days together – in Donetsk, and Lugansk, even seeing in the new year with Michel.

However, I didn’t go with them to the MH17 site, and I’m, to say the least, surprised, at Michel’s actions. It wasn’t something I was aware of until seeing his subsequent posts on Twitter, and reading the articles about this, it having caused a considerable scandal in the Netherlands. Had I been there, I would have been against this, in the strongest terms. I’ve spent some 75 hours on the MH17 site, and never once removed anything. One part, given to me by a homeowner (it had fallen on his home), I did everything to try to submit to the MH17 investigation, they didn’t want it.

I understand that Michel strongly felt, as many of us who have worked on MH17 do, that it is both inexplicable, and unacceptable, for parts, including personal items, to be on the site 2 1/2 years after the tragedy. I understand he wanted to contact the relatives, return such items as he felt were of value, submit what else could be, to DNA investigation.

However, whatever the intentions, I can’t support Michel’s actions here. I can, however, say that I worked with Michel, all around Europe, on my reportage trip in June of 2016 – he was a reliable colleague, a nice guy, we got through a few tough spots together, and I was happy to see him wish to come to report the truth from Donbass.

I believe Michel’s actions were those of a journalist in Donbass for the first time, at the MH17 site for the first time, overawed, wanting to do it all. And to add, Michel is a Dutchman, and this, the worst aviation catastrophe in his nation’s history.

I would also add that fellow Dutch journalist Jeroen Akkermans took multiple items from the crash site in 2014, and was applauded for doing so in his own country. I have written frequently in opposition to this, and my sentiments are the same in the situation of Michel Spekkers, despite our good working relatonship, friendship.

I can’t comment on the actions of the Dutch police, in terms of confiscating Michel’s items, against his will. However, Michel put himself in a position where he faced the police in a compromised position, due to his actions.

And it puts me in the position of, of course, defending a colleague with whom I’ve been through a fair bit with, had some beers with, done some important work with, but being unable to defend his actions in this instance.

I believe that, with an apology from Michel, and acknowledgement this was an error of judgement, this matter can be resolved without any considerable harm being done. There is no question in any way of his having ‘compromised’ the investigation etc, and I hope this will be a lesson Michel will learn from, and move forward.

Thoughts, as ever, with the victims of MH17, and their families, and loved ones.

Huge blunder from this Spekkers! He is not really a journalist, and caused Beck losing his material.

Documentary: The Dutchman who's been in Donbass all war
Published on Jan 6, 2017

I watched a part of it yesterday, thought it was pretty interesting. I read a Dutch article about it and it was mentioned that one of the things he said was that while everything was going on he was able to follow the Dutch media and he noticed how far away from the truth their reports are. Nothing but lies, he said. "It's not about Russian aggression. What the media says is simply not true," he also mentions. This comes from someone who actually was in Donbass and saw it all happen! All the media does is parrot lies.

Interesting guy, very centered, very straight, forcefull. I hope he is not in the intervieuws, confiscated from Spekkers en Beck, unedited. Just had in a conversation with a friend, about the boatrefugees, the remark, he's been there, he knows more. (no he doesn't) i used this vid as reply: that you are somewhere, doesn't always makes you see. Sometimes you bring your own reality/conviction somewhere, witch blinds you. It's not where you are, but who you are and what you see..
Ofcourse, everybody knows every war is a scam.. But this one maybe not?
