Russian Su-24 fighter jet shot down over Syria - Russian MoD (VIDEO)

A Russian Su-24 fighter has been shot down in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding the plane hadn’t violated Turkish airspace and was flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters.

“During the flight, the aircraft was flying within the borders of Syria, which was registered by objective monitoring data,” the ministry said, adding that the aircraft was "supposedly shot down from the ground.”

Russian Su-24 fighter jet shot down over Syria

Clear provocation by NATO yet again. Sending several F-16 warplanes to one bomber with the intent to kill. Makes my blood boil to no end. First civilians, now a military plane. What’s next ? Total war ?

The US/Empire wants to provoke Russia and paint them the aggressors. Only way how they can sell their war. How about attacking back in such a way NATO cannot answer. Erdogan should burn for this.

Next-time he and its ilk travel by plane. Just tear it down by the high tech EMP weapon Russia has available. Public won’t believe it anyhow. But the world powers will get a clear message that being obedient to the US/empire has deadly consequences. Maybe that will finally motivate them in the right direction.

There is good, there is evil and there is the situation what decides what is what.

Easy to say I suppose. I wouldn’t know how to act. But this cannot go unmarked.

Russia certainly has to escort all it’s bombers by air superiority planes from this moment on.

Meanwhile, Turks are saying:

Reports of a downed plane emerged earlier in Turkish media. A Habertürk TV reporter on the scene said the aircraft “turned into a fireball.” Numerous witnesses wrote on social media, saying thick plumes of smoke have been rising from the jet crash site.

Turkish military added the plane had been warned at least 10 times over a period of five minutes before being shot down by two Turkish F-16 fighter jets. He said the plane had violated Turkish airspace.

So, the stories are in conflict.

Let's see what happens next.

Re: Turkey shot down Russian fighter jet over Syria

Only ISIS is of course allowed to travel the Turkish border and back. The fact that Turkey doesn't even open it's airspace to Russia shows it's true alliance. They are fighting ISIS while Turkey is attempting to kill Russian pilots !! Would the public finally get this easy revelation now? I am not holding my breath.

Plane crashed in Syria. Not Turkey. Violated Turkeys airspace ? I don't believe it for a second.

Btw, very rich coming from a country which systematically violates Greek airspace.

Indeed. According to this article, Turkey violated last year Greek airspace total of 2244 times.

_http://www.politico.eu/article/turkey-buzzes-weakened-greece-military-airspace/

Greece’s Ministry of Defense did not respond to a request for information and comment, but according to statistics collected by Christos Kollias, a Greek defense economist at the University of Thessaly, last year Turkish military helicopters and planes violated Greek-claimed airspace 2,244 times. For this May, Kollias recorded 361 Turkish incursions into Greek airspace.

I know, just staggering.

Coming from RT life coverage right now. One pilot is most likely dead. Jihadists have shown a video of a corpse while they are celebrating. One particularly translation = ''Sorry for not burning the pilot alive''

This offers one opportunity. Turkey is a NATO member and just attacked Russia !!! NATO members should now finally wake up now and leave the alliance!! Major ones are seeking ways of getting out anyhow. This pretext is perfect. If they won't I think its clear that any hope of Europe gaining independence from US hegemony would never happen. What happened is a declaration of war. Will France and Germany stay silent about this ?

Turkey response it btw naming it NATO airspace, not Turkey's airspace. They are trying to drag NATO in it.

Russia should respond, covertly preferable but with dire consequences.

And the same day:

2 RT reporters injured on Syria-Turkey border by anti-tank shell
https://www.rt.com/news/323216-rt-correspondents-injured-syria/

Two RT correspondents have sustained injuries after a press convoy was shelled on the Turkish-Syrian border. One of the reporters sustained serious injuries after a missile exploded near a car carrying RT crew members.

The crew were passing the village of Al-Dagmashliya in the province of Latakia, controlled by President Bashar Assad’s forces, when they came under shelling.

RT’s Roman Kosarev sustained a concussion while RT Arabic’s Sargon Hadaya was injured by pieces of shrapnel in his back and leg.

Kosarev said that the press convoy was hit by an anti-tank missile coming from a rebel-controlled area some 2.5 km away.

RT's Roman Kosarev has covered conflicts extensively. In particular, he reported from the Donetsk region where local militia fought against Ukrainian forces.

He also reported from the crash site of the Russian airliner that killed 224 in late October.

Travelling together with RT was a TASS reporter who was injured by shrapnel in his hand. The RT reporters have returned to Russia’s military base in Latakia and are being treated by medics.

Dozens of journalists have been killed and hundreds wounded while reporting on the Syrian war since 2011. The unrest, which started over four years ago as protests considered to be part of the so-called Arab Spring, was used by Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants who gained control over swaths of Syria.

On September 30, Russia launched airstrikes against ISIS at the request of Assad’s government about a year after the US-led coalition started bombing territories they claim are controlled by terrorists.

Greek sources are saying that Russia's First Duma has asked that all Turkish nationals in their country leave immediately. But I haven't found confirmation by RT yet. Putin is in Jordan right now, meeting with the king there. They are expecting him to make a statement soon.

Re: Turkey shot down Russian fighter jet over Syria

RT live coverage right now. Putin is taking no prisoners, appears very serious but also calm.

Putin said:

Serious consequences for our relationships (Russia - Turkey)

Calling it a step in the back by the accomplishes and supporters of terrorism. Even said: 'Turkey profits directly from ISIS oil, do they want NATO to serve the interest of ISIS ?''

''International community should unite against a common evil and condemn this.''

Air to air missile was the cause. 4 KM away from the Turkish borders according to Putin.

RT is very clear at pointing out the role of Turkey role of supporting ISIS. They were rather subtle before. What is clear I think. Turkey's role with ISIS is going to be fully exposed. No reason to hold back any more. This could very well be Erdogan biggest fear. Only the victors write history and they are not going to win, even attacked Russia today. Other supporters of ISIS should start to realize this now.

European media hasn't always been of support of Turkey. They could use Turkey as a scapegoat. Burying there own support of ISIS and blame Turkey. Corrupt way of accepting there loses. This could be there perfect opportunity to do so.

These are the latest news from RT's updates:

24 November 2015 13:00 GMT
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Turkey has a right to respond to violations of its airspace.

12:53 GMT
Turkey backstabbed Russia by downing the Russian warplane and acted as accomplices of the terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

The plane was hit by a Turkish warplane as it was travelling 1 km away from the Turkish border, Putin said. The plane posed no threat to Turkish national security, he stressed.

Putin said the plane was targeting terrorist targets in the Latakia province of Syria, many of whom came from Russia.

Russia noticed of the flow of oil from Syrian territory under the control of terrorists to Turkey, Putin said.

Apparently, IS now not only receives revenue from the smuggling of oil, but also has the protection of a nation’s military, Putin said. This may explain why the terrorist group is so bold in taking acts of terrorism across the world, he added.

The incident will have grave consequences for Russia’s relations with Turkey, Putin warned.

The fact that Turkey did not try to contact Russia in the wake of the incident and rushed to call a NATO meeting instead is worrisome, Putin said. It appears that Turkey want NATO to serve the interests of IS, he added.

Putin said Russia respects the regional interests of other nations, but warned the atrocity committed by Turkey would not go without an answer.

Putin was speaking at a meeting with King of Jordan Abdullah II in Sochi, who expressed his condolences to the Russian leader over the loss of a Russian pilot in Tuesday’s incident, as well as the deaths of Russians in the Islamic State bombing of a passenger plane in Egypt.

The two leaders discussed the anti-terrorist effort in Syria and Iraq and the diplomatic effort to find a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

12:35 GMT
Several protesters have showed up in front of the Turkish Embassy in Moscow to protest the downing of the Russian bomber. “Turkey, are you for or against ISIS?” one of the banners said in Russian.

12:28 GMT
Czech President Miloš Zeman has criticized Turkey for downing the Russian warplane.

Sometimes one may suspect that Turkey has informal contacts with Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL]. Considering that the Russian Air Forces are fighting IS, the attack appears to be too radical a measure,” he said, as cited by Itar-Tass.

Re: Turkey shot down Russian fighter jet over Syria

Sounds like their getting desperate, with ISIS on the back foot unbelievable :curse:

- Everything Putin said, I think its very clear now that Russia will no longer act as if ISIS is supported indirectly by Turkey. Erdogan had it's chance of giving up its support without any consequences. That is now over.

Turkey's power structure directly supports ISIS and Putin is not going to hide that fact anymore. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon recently supported Russia on there actions in Syria. Hopefully he will take Russia's side again.

NATO meeting will happen tonight. Turkey according to Putin didn't even notified Russia, they went straight up to NATO. Is Turkey trying to instigate a war ? Please let Berlin and Paris act rational for a chance and let them condemn this heavily. Out of NATO, sanctions whatever. Not just talk hopefully.

Re: Turkey shot down Russian fighter jet over Syria

I had a serious deja vu watching Putin talk about Turkey rushing to NATO. This is surreal. That's an unprovoked act of war. Putin and Russia showing great restraint so far. This smells to high heaven of yet another provocation to drag Russia into war with NATO and Putin is calling on the international community instead of having a knee jerk reaction. It will be interesting to see what the NATO meeting amounts to this evening. Was Turkey going rogue to protect their Turkmen and stolen oil racket when they did this or was it a planned NATO event to gauge Russian and international community's responses? Kind of scary. Putin said it right. It's a crime and it cannot go unpunished. Unfortunately, if Turkey and Russia get into it then NATO gets brought in in the wake. So much for proxy armies. Turkey just shot down a Russian plane! Oy

It's complete hypocrisy! Turkey is acting as if it were completely infallible, and completely justified for it's actions! Why don't they use those same grounds when it comes to stopping I.S.? (Oopse that's right, I almost forgot: I.S. is their children)

Turkey couldn't even own up to it's own actions in telling Russia, instead it ran into the 'protection' of Mama NATO, like a little spoiled child who knows he's in trouble if his twisted explanation of the story is not heard first.

It should be really interesting to see how this one plays out. I can't imagine how NATO will get away with justifying support for Turkey if they actually do, or if they'll decided to use Turkey as a scapegoat.

Either way, should be interesting.
