Seventeen Chinese nationals were injured, with 12 taken to hospital, today as a Hong Kong Airlines flight departing from Bali, in Indonesia, was hit by severe turbulence.
“Twelve people were rushed to a hospital, one of them with a very serious injury,” said Herni Pramuharjo, spokesman of the transport ministry said, according to the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua. “Five others were treated at the health clinic in the airport. All of them were Chinese nationals.”
The incident occurred when the aeroplane was flying over Borneo, about one hour after flight HX6704, bound for Hong Kong, took off from Bali International Airport.
The plane was forced to return to its original destination.
A spokesman for Hong Kong Airlines confirmed that 14 passengers and three crew members were injured and that most of the injured had now been discharged. One passenger is still in hospital for further checks.
On Wednesday, 31 passengers and a crew member aboard an Etihad Airways flight were also injured when their plane ran into sudden and severe turbulence about 45 minutes before landing at the Soekarno Hatta International Airport, in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Passenger tells of '1,000ft drops' after severe turbulence hits United Airlines

These eye witness reports caught my attention today, for the sudden / unexpected nature of the turbulence and its severity. Those are BIG drops and very unusual. I would not want to be on that plane!

Passenger tells of '1,000ft drops' after severe turbulence hits United Airlines flight

A PLANE passenger said he feared for his life as a transatlantic jet dropped in severe turbulence injuring 16 people on board before landing at Shannon Airport.

Gregory Giagnocavo, a telecoms investor and entrepreneur from Colorado in the US, was on the United Airlines flight when it suddenly plummeted four times.

"These were petrifying, enormous drops. A part of me didn't know if we were going to make it. It was that bad," he said.

"I gripped the arm rest and thought whether the next sound was going to be hitting the water."

Flight UA880 from Houston, Texas, to London Heathrow was over the Atlantic at about 3.20am on Wednesday morning when it hit what the airline described as severe and unexpected turbulence.

The pilots diverted to Shannon Airport in Ireland for the injured to be treated including two flight attendants, one with a suspected broken arm and another who was bleeding from a cut head.

Three children were also treated in University Hospital Limerick after the plane was met on the runway by ambulance and paramedic crews.

United Airlines said it provided care and support to customers and crew after the plane touched down in Ireland.

There were 207 passengers on the Boeing 767-300 and 13 crew including three pilots in the cockpit.

Another plane was arranged to fly the final stretch of the journey to Heathrow just after midday while the jet remained in Shannon for investigators to assess.

Mr Giagnocavo, in London to meet developers and technology experts as part of a three-day brainstorming trip across Europe, said many passengers were trying to sleep through the overnight flight and were strapped in.

"It fell four times in a row," he said.

"It was a tremendous pull on the body. And on the third or fourth time babies starting waking up and crying, people were waking up disorientated.

"I thought this is not turbulence. This is what feels like a life-threatening drop. This is not like any feeling I have had. This is immediately like an experience of being fired from a cannon.

"It pulls you down so hard then it stops for a second and then it does that four times in a row.

"If you didn't have your seat belt on you would have smashed your head."

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said the incident would be investigated.

The alarm was raised with Irish air traffic control staff at 3.20am and the plane landed in Shannon at 5.55am and was met by ambulance and paramedic crews on the runway.

Mr Giagnocavo, who has flown regularly for 30 years, said a man sitting across an aisle from him had been with one of the flight attendants in the galley when she was injured and he was knocked off his feet by the force of the turbulence.

He said a retired pilot who was on the flight speculated that the plane plummeted about 1,000 feet in each of the drops.

"A lot of people were very emotional, babies were crying," he said.

"But it was more of a subdued chaos. The shock of everything, people were sort of subdued, not sure what had happened, as though people were holding their breath."

University Hospital Limerick said passengers and crew treated in its accident and emergency ward suffered soft tissue injuries, lacerations and minor head injuries.

The alarm was raised in the hospital at 5.30am that a flight was being diverted to Shannon with up to 23 injured people on board.

Eleven of the injured patients were discharged within four-and-a-half hours of the flight landing

(Perceval) So, Air Asia flight QZ8501 disappeared from radar on the 28th of December 2014. No word from the pilots. It disappeared and apparently crashed, and everybody died. Then they started finding parts of the plane at the bottom of the sea. What happened to it?

A: Similar to the African flight. We said there would be more of same.

Q: (Pierre) A superstorm.

(L) So, what did they say about that other African flight?

(Perceval) A vortex that sucks it up and then throws it down, and there was a superpowerful lightning strike...

A: Vortexes can occur without lightning.

Q: (L) So, just out of curiosity: a long time ago, you said that 4D war is experienced by us as weather. I'm assuming it's not just weather, but also maybe cometary bombardment could also be a 3rd density manifestation of 4th density war. So my question is, is there any consciousness to these kinds of things... is any of it "directed"?

A: In some cases, yes. In others, just "collateral damage."

Q: (Perceval) For the Air Asia flight, did it involve a massive updraft and then a downdraft as some are claiming?

A: Yes

Q: (Perceval) And what causes that kind of a vortex?

A: Variations of temperature in layers of atmosphere enhanced by variations in charge potential difference.

Q: (Pierre) So it's powerful. You have the electrical factor and the mechanical or thermal factor sometimes working in conjunction.

(Chu) Like a tornado then.

Passengers were left fighting for their lives on a flight to Bangkok as the passengers experienced such severe turbulence that some lost consciousness and suffered from internal bleeding.

The Aeroflot flight from Moscow left three babies with broken spines after the infants were thrown out of their mothers' arms in the shock turbulence, one hour before landing in the Thai city.

The Aeroflot flight from Moscow left three babies with broken spines after the infants were thrown out of their mothers' arms in the shock turbulence, one hour before landing in the Thai city.

People in the aisles of the aircraft were said to be the most seriously injured.

Twenty-five injured people were treated in hospital after the incident on the Boeing 777 aircraft, with two undergoing immediate urgent surgery.

Passenger Evgenia Zibrova was so horrified by the event that she filmed the catastrophe, and posted the video online.

"Numerous air pockets one hour before landing led to broken bones, internal and external bleeding," said Zibrova in a comment online.

"Lots of people from the tail cabin have broken their noses, several people have probably broken their spines.

"Babies are covered in bruises, people lost consciousness. Thanks that we are still alive. Aeroflot, please help these people."

The shocking footage also shows items from food and drinks trolleys strewn across the aisles.

Vladimir Sosnov, deputy head of Russian Consulate in Thailand, said: "The injured suffered multiple fractures. There are both Russian and foreign citizens among them."

He said: "Apparently, those who were injured did not have their seat belts fastened."

A source told news agency Interfax: "A Boeing 777 plane suddenly got into the zone of strong turbulence before starting to descend.

"There had been no order to fasten seat belts at that moment.

"As a result, the plane was jolted by hundreds of metres, and some passengers were thrown into the space between the chairs suffering traumas."

An airport source told TASS that 25 people were injured when flight SU-270 flew into "a zone of strong turbulence" while approaching the Thai capital.

"Nineteen people were hospitalised. Other passengers received the necessary aid and refused from [sic] further treatment," the source said.

Turbulence is a normal event during flights. It is caused when normal smooth air flow that plans travel through is disturbed. It can be caused by warm air rising through an area of cold air; a natural or man-made structure changing airflow; or where neighbouring pockets of air are flowing in different directions.

Turbulence is difficult to predict and so can strike suddenly.

The US Federal Aviation Administration says that around 58 people in the US are injured by turbulence each year, and during 1980-2008, there were three people were killed during turbulence – two of those fatalities occurred when the passengers were not wearing seatbelts, despite being told to.

Pilot Alexander Ruzov told the incident occurred 20 minutes before the Boeing 777 was about to descend

The Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Bangkok was on the required trajectory thirty seconds after hitting an area of severe turbulence.

"The overload lasted around 15 seconds. Thirty seconds later, thanks to the crew’s efforts, the plane returned to the desired trajectory. Unfortunately, the passengers who were not wearing their seatbelts sustained injuries," he said, adding the incident occurred 20 minutes before the Boeing 777 was about to descend.

Earlier on Monday, Boeing 777, on flight SU 270 from Moscow to Bangkok, was hit by turbulence. According to Aeroflot, the incident was caused by clear-air turbulence, which occurs in clear sky with good visibility and cannot be predicted. Among injured passengers who were hospitalized in in Bangkok are 15 Russian and two Thai nationals.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened inquiries into the incident.

"Free fall": Severe turbulence hurts 9 on KLM 747 from Amsterdam to Hong Kong

By Janene Pieters on June 5, 2017 - 10:06

Nine people were injured when a KLM flight hit massive turbulence on its way from Amsterdam to Hong Kong on Sunday, according to local news site The Standard. The Boeing 747 went into what passengers describe as a "free fall" about half an hour before landing in the Chinese city, according to the site. Eight people - six passengers and two crew members - were taken to hospital after the plane landed.

The victims are four women and five men between the ages of 31 and 55 years. One sustained a minor head injury and refused to go to hospital afterwards.

The plane hit the turbulence a short time after the pilot announced that they were set to arrive in Hong Kong within 30 to 40 minutes, one passenger said to The Standard. "For around three seconds, it was like an Abyss Turbo Drop", the passenger said, referring to an amusement park ride in Ocean Park in Hong Kong. "It was just like a free fall." According to her, the passenger sitting next to her was not wearing his seatbelt and hit the ceiling when the plane dropped.

The flight landed safely at the Hong Kong airport around 30 minutes after hitting the turbulence, around 10:00 a.m. local time. A fleet of ambulances were waiting to take injured passengers and crew to hospitals.

A KLM spokesperson confirmed to Het Parool on Monday morning that eight people were taken to hospital, seven of whom have since been discharged. One passenger was kept overnight for observation.

Re: Another case of wounded passengers due to air turbulence

I remember reading on sott predictions for more and more severe turbulence during translantic flights due to climate change:

From 2016: Fasten your seat belt - severe turbulence is on the rise

"It is predicted there will be more and more incidents of severe clear-air turbulence, which typically comes out of the blue with no warning, occurring in the near future as climate change takes its effect in the stratosphere," Dr Paul Williams, a Royal Society research fellow at Reading University, said last week.

Dr Paul Williams, sited above, also participated in a more recent study this past April, concluding with the same predictions:

Climate Change May Lead to More Severe Flight Turbulence, Study Says

Climate change is expected to produce more turbulence for aircraft, increasing the risk of passenger injury and the cost of flights, a new study says.

According to the study published Friday in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, climate change is expected to strengthen vertical wind shears in the jet stream at aircraft cruising altitudes, which could more than double moderate to severe clear-air turbulence by the end of the century.

"The climate is changing — not just where we live at ground level, but also where we fly at 30,000–40,000 feet," lead author Paul D. Williams, a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, said in the study. "Climate change may have important consequences for aviation because the meteorological characteristics of the atmosphere influence airport operations, flight routes, journey times, and the safety and comfort of passengers and crew."

Researchers at the University of Reading in England used climate model simulations to observe how clear-air turbulence might be affected by climate change during transatlantic wintertime flights at 39,000 feet.

Also found a post with some explanations:

<...>
The most dangerous time for aircraft is usually landing approach because the plane is relatively slow and not very high. The reason for this is that there is not enough speed and altitude to recover from an unusual situation. It is also in a relatively high-drag condition with landing gear and flaps extended and low power from the engines as it descends.

A microburst in a downward direction would suddenly and rapidly force the plane to lose altitude at a great rate. What would be needed would be to raise the nose and apply full power to halt the sudden rapid descent. Large jet engines do not accelerate their rotational speed very quickly and can take up to 10 seconds to raise from near idle speed to full power. Meanwhile, as you have raised the nose, perhaps quite a bit in the attempt to halt the rapid downforce, in a high-drag configuration, airspeed drops rapidly. Below a certain speed the drag on a plane increases rapidly as the speed decreases, and it is a fact that below a certain speed even full power is not enough to maintain flight unless the nose is dropped quite a bit and the pull of gravity is additionally used to increase the airspeed. At a low altitude, there may not be enough time and space to recover.

A quick search on SOTT with the same terms (flight turbulence) yielded 2602 results. Old and new mixed together.

"Free fall": Severe turbulence hurts 9 on KLM 747 from Amsterdam to Hong Kong

Another flight on Sunday leaving Hong Kong International airport experienced problems.

An Air China flight on Sunday almost hit a mountain on Lantau Island when it took off from Hong Kong International airport, after deviating from its flight path.

Close Call! Air China Flight Nearly Collides with Mountaintop
https://sputniknews.com/asia/201706061054343634-china-flight-almost-hits-mountaintop/

06.06.2017 - At around 9:30 p.m. local time, flight CA428 turned south in the direction of Tai O village — and nearby mountains — instead of heading west until it left the island as the aircraft usually would, according to images from the Flightradar aircraft tracking site.

The Airbus A320 corrected itself after an air control officer issued an immediate warning and provided directions on how to return to the intended flight path, landing safely two hours later in the city of Chengdu.

When the passenger plane made the wrong turn it was flying at 3,400 feet, and the nearest peak was 3,066. It’s the highest point on Lantau.

Licensed pilot and Civic Party lawmaker Jeremy Tam Man-ho claimed that 4,300 feet is actually the minimum altitude safe to fly in that area.

He was quoted by the South China Morning Post saying, "If the plane was carrying more cargo or passengers, or if the plane was a bigger one, it might not have achieved its altitude at that time … If the plane turned towards the mountains at an even lower altitude, you could imagine what the consequence could have been."

Tam also pointed out that a crash would have been avoided as the aircraft’s anti-collision system would have compelled the plan to climb upward immediate.

Air China says that the pilot decided to turn before the air traffic control officer confirmed their directions due to a busy radio signal.

Tam said that even if there were issues with the radio, the pilot should have stayed with his normal path.

An Air China spokesman said, "Air China has been putting air safety as our top priority … We will further strengthen our safety education."

Passengers aboard Air-Asia Flight D7237 from Perth, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were startled by a terrifying bang outside of the plane, before the jet began to violently shake up and down for 90 uninterrupted minutes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ_SnurhVlA (1:59 min.)

The seats shook so much that the 359 passengers of the Airbus A330 felt like they were "sitting on top of a washing machine," as one unnamed passenger put it. The first minutes of the shaking were reportedly the worst, according to several passengers, who believed that the plane was going to go down.

"I was crying a lot," Sophie Nicolas told Australia's ABC. "A lot of people were crying, trying to call their moms and stuff. But we couldn't really do anything. Just wait and trust the captain."

"It was just like a small explosion almost from the left wing, and the plane just started shuddering," she added.

The captain, however, informed the passengers that they should pray for a safe landing. "Please listen to everything," an airline staffer told the frightened passengers over the intercom. "Our survival depends on your cooperating. Hopefully everything will turn out for the best."

However, when it became clear that the plane was not coming apart at the seams, the passengers calmed down significantly. "Not great, not amazing," one said in a video taken by a passenger. "We're having 50 million beers when we get back."

The plane turned back around and returned to Perth. As it limped back to the airport, passenger Brenton Atkinson reported that he could see the engine in the wing rattling back and forth. Passengers held the brace position during landing in case of catastrophe, but the plane held together and arrived safely.

No injuries were reported by Air-Asia, which issued a statement: "Passengers were attended to by our ground staff upon landing and were provided with all necessary assistance. Our engineers are taking precautionary steps to check the aircraft. Guests on board the flight (were) transferred to the next available flight or the recovery flight D7689, which safely departed Perth at 23:40 hours on the same day.
