Van Mows Down People on Barcelona's Ramblas: multiple deaths and injuries

Latest terror attack: Barcelona

First reports are of 2 men in a van running people down in a busy street. Local media report 13 people dead.

They have then since apparently gone into a restaurant and taken hostages.

TV3 says it now has “official” confirmation that 13 people are dead. It also says there are dozens of injured.

Eyewitness Lourdes Porcar told TV3 television station that she saw the van running people over. “It was going very fast, without caring about who was in its way,” she said.

Police have set up roadblocks around the city amid reports that a second van was involved in the attack and fled the scene.

There are also reports that at least on attacker is holed up in a Turkish restaurant on Carrer Hospital, which leads off from the spot in which the van appears to have come to a halt.

Television pictures show that a van came to a halt on top of a Joan Miro mosaic, half-way down Las Ramblas - meaning that it would have covered more than 500 metres.

Re: A van killed almost 13 people in Barcelona

This is very strange because since some days I read that people from Barcelona are very tired of turists and ask them to leave the country. Also don't forget that in October Catalonia is suppose to have a referendum to become an indenpendent province from Spain.

It is not surprising that Barcelona was a logical target. And also after the summer hollidays terrorists attacks are always occuring.

Re: Latest terror attack: Barcelona

I sensed that this or something similar was going to happen long ago, in Barcelona, not so much because of the importance of the city in the global context but because here, it is crowding, concentrating many people from all over the world with a lot of tourists from around the planet. Lately, it's a trend destination so to speak.

Fortunately, there have not been too many casualties. At least according to the first reports

Barcelona terrorist attack: 1 dead, 32 injured as van plows into pedestrians in tourist area

One person has died and more than 30 others have been injured in a “massive crash” involving a van in Barcelona's city center, local police have confirmed. Authorities have called the incident a “terrorist attack.”

Catalan Police have confirmed that one person was killed and 32 other injured, 10 of them seriously.

Police say the crash occurred after the van jumped the sidewalk, AP reported.

Authorities are looking for the driver of the vehicle, who escaped on foot, according to El Nacional.

he vehicle used in the attack was a rented Fiat van. The perpetrators had also rented a second car with which they had planned to flee, according to La Vanguardia.

The crash occurred on the famous La Rambla, a street popular with tourists visiting the city.

A person tweeted following the attack that they were stuck in a restaurant, adding that armed police are "everywhere."

Catalan Emergency Services tweeted that an incident occurred near Plaça Catalunya and advised people to avoid the area.

It said in a second tweet that the closure of rail stations in the area had been requested.

Authorities have cordoned off the area and shut down nearby stores. A helicopter is hovering above the scene.

ADDED: https://www.rt.com/on-air/

One witness said the van ran people over “while they were crossing at traffic lights.”

La Rambla de Barcelona promenade street has been cordoned off, as have surrounding streets, while establishments in the center of the city have been evacuated. Public transport in the center of the city has been closed down.

Police sources say at least one of the people behind the attack is now holed up in bar in the Raval district of the city. The van used in the attack was rented by a man the Civil Guard have identified as Driss Oukabir in the small town of Santa Perpetua de Mogoda, some 25 kilometers north of Barcelona.

Police in Barcelona have asked people around Plaça Catalunya to stay indoors. They have urged those concerned about friends and family to use social media, rather than cellphone calls, to get in touch with friends and relatives to avoid overloading phone networks. [...]

Re: A van killed almost 13 people in Barcelona

A hour ago msm just announced at least 3 persons dead (actually increasing as time goes by, now 13), and other 20 injured from a van knocking down the overcrowded center of Barcelona, mostly tourists. About 10 min. later, I watched on tv the police already confirming through speakerphone it´s a case of terrorists attack, and ordering people to leave the area (500 m). Man, they´re getting quicker after each attack in drawing their conclusions.

Then same history, various shots heard coming from nowhere, and journalists confirming the police is already circling the two criminals, well some said Jihadists as it were.

I´m going back now to watch the photo of some Arab they will surely hook on all tv channels soon if they still haven´t.

The article adds that gunmen barricaded themselves in a Turkish restaurant in the Ramblas and took hostages. It's not clear if these were the same in the van.

Van Mows Down People on Barcelona's Ramblas: 13 confirmed dead, dozens injured

Catalonia's TV3 reported that 13 people had died and dozens were injured, but these numbers have not been confirmed by Spanish authorities. Catalan police have so far confirmed one death and said 32 people have been injured, 10 of them seriously.

Spanish police, who are treating the incident as a terrorist attack, said the "massive crash" happened on Las Ramblas in an area of the city popular with tourists.

Spanish media reported that the Guardia Civil have identified the suspect thought to have hired the white Fiat van used in the attack. According to those reports, he is understood to be from north Africa but to possess a NIE, the identity document issued to foreigners who are resident in Spain.

There were separate reports that a suspect had been arrested, but it was not clear whether this referred to the same person.

A second van linked to the attack - assumed to have been used as getaway car - has been found in the small town of Vic in Catalonia.

Comment: Coming just a few weeks before Catalonia's referendum, this event will surely be used by Spanish authorities to argue for a 'No' vote. After all, if this kind of attack can happen in the heart of Catalonia, surely Catalonians are safer, and therefore better off, in the bosom of the Spanish state.

Coming just a few days after the 'car attack' in Charlottesville in the US, it is also a 'timely' reminder to the people of Western nations that the world is a very dangerous and threatening place, and all right-thinking people should place their trust and faith in the protective power of their respective states.

"The biggest migration movements are still ahead: Africa's population will double in the next decades. A country like Egypt will grow to 100 million people, Nigeria to 400 million. In our digital age with the internet and mobile phones, everyone knows about our prosperity and lifestyle." — German Development Minister Gerd Müller.
"Young people all have cellphones and they can see what's happening in other parts of the world, and that acts as a magnet." — Michael Møller, Director of the United Nations office in Geneva.
"If we do not manage to solve the central problems in African countries, ten, 20 or even 30 million immigrants will arrive in the European Union within the next ten years." — Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament.

Spain is on track to overtake Greece as the second-biggest gateway for migrants entering Europe by sea. The sudden surge in migration to Spain comes amid a crackdown on human smuggling along the Libya-Italy sea route, currently the main migrant point of entry to Europe.

The westward shift in migration routes from Greece and Italy implies that Spain, situated only ten miles from Africa by sea, may soon find itself at the center of Europe's migration crisis.

Re: Van Mows Down People on Barcelona's Ramblas: 13 confirmed dead, dozens injured

I would have to say that the PTB were ultimately responsible for this coordinated event. This is possibly a look here, don’t look over there, kind of thing. Something somewhere else may be happening, keep your eyes open.

Either that or Spain is next, in their sights. Neither prospect is good, Haiku …

Passport found in Barcelona attack van, may identify attacker

Do they think we are stupid or what!?

Just for the record, initial reports were of 2 attackers. And then a hostage situation. Let's see how quickly this devolves into 1 lone gunman thing.

Quote from Carl
Just for the record, initial reports were of 2 attackers. And then a hostage situation. Let's see how quickly this devolves into 1 lone gunman thing.

Shortly after the attack, there was at least one man describing to one of the journalists all the details he could witness while finding himself in a closed area (not sure if it´s a restaurant), and a gunman started to fire in all directions. In that occasion at least there was no mention of any hostage situation.

Well, there were supposed to be two vans involved, one for the attack and one to getaway. One of those was later found in another small town, and at least one man took hostages in a restaurant on the Ramblas. All of which suggests at least 2 people. However, an initial report in Spanish said the hostage situation involved "a few" ("varios", i.e. more than a couple but not many) gunmen. So I'm very curious to see how they end up blaming one guy only, which I'm sure they will. Oh I know - we will just not hear of any data pointing to more than one attacker any more. The media will just forget about it and so will the public.

Re: Van Mows Down People on Barcelona's Ramblas: 13 confirmed dead, dozens injured

This article in Spanish says that on the outskirts of Barcelona a man tried to go through a police checkpoint with his car and ran over 3 policemen. The driver was shot dead. The authorities have not confirmed if this is related to the attack on the Ramblas.

Latest UPDATE:

Briton caught up in Barcelona attack talks of her 'unbridled fear'

Susan Maclean, who is on holiday in Barcelona with her husband, said she was "very lucky" to have avoided the van as it ploughed through the crowds.

She told Channel 4 News: "All of a sudden, there was this screaming and hordes of people, like a tidal wave of people, fear etched in their faces, running towards us, many of them yelling in Spanish.

"We had no idea what was going on. My first thought was this is a terrorist attack."

She said she felt "unbridled fear" during the incident where she was barricaded into a nearby shop for safety.

Ms Maclean said: "It was very difficult to know what was going on.

"People were shouting. We could hear the word 'shooting, shooting'. We weren't really sure whether that was shooting as in the English or a Spanish word so it was just unbridled fear."

'Suspected attacker killed in shootout with police' -local media reports

One of the suspected attackers involved in mowing down people in Barcelona has been killed in a shootout with police on the outskirts of the city, La Vanguardia newspaper reported.

Police earlier confirmed they had arrested a man in connection with the attack.

It was not immediately clear how many attackers were involved in the incident

The driver was arrested around two and a half hours after the attack, police said. A second suspect was also arrested.

Police shot dead a third man who drove at officers at a checkpoint. It was not clear whether he was connected to the Las Ramblas attack.

One of the arrested men was named as Driss Oukabir. He is suspected of renting the van, but later denied involvement and reportedly said his documents had been stolen.

State-owned broadcaster RTVE reported that investigators think two vans were used - one for the attack and a second as a getaway vehicle.

Oukabir 'denies involvement in Las Ramblas attack'

A local newspaper in Catalonia, El Nacional, reported that Oukabir told police in Ripoll that he had nothing to do with the Barcelona attack.

He said that his documents had been stolen and used to hire the car, sources told the paper.

Jordi Munell, mayor of Ripoll, confirmed that Oukabir had denied any involvement in the attack.

The Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police force, said they were looking into the report and not confirm or deny it.
