Can RSS for posts include entire message?
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:21:58 PM »
I love the new forum, and have subscribed to it using an RSS reader. This makes it easy for me to see what's new without having to go to the website. However, I also sync the RSS to my portable widgets, so that I can read it whenever I'm on a train or bus or something. But as it is the RSS only includes a small piece of each post, and I have to go online to read the whole thing.

Would it be possible to change so that the RSS feed contains the entire forum message? Or have an alternative RSS feed for this? That would REALLY make it easier for me to track what's going on in the forum.

Thanks!

You should buy an iPhone, then you could just surf the forum...     ;)

Seriously, be careful what you wish for.  What about some of Laura's ginormous posts or those with graphics?  It might overwhelm RSS.
You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?

I am actually using an iTouch, so you're pretty close ;-)

Well, actually that's precisely the kind of thing I want to read while I'm on the bus or waiting for someone to show up!

RSS feeds with more information?
« Reply #3 on: July 19, 2010, 07:12:30 AM »
Hi!

I'm reading both SOTT and the forums primarily through the RSS feeds. That way I can keep up with it on my phone or computer easily, and know what's new. It works ok, but the main problem is that both the SOTT and forums feeds do not contain the full information, only abstracts. If they had the full content there would be no need to go to the websites, and my only contribution to the bandwidth usages would be reading the RSS feeds.

So, would it be possible to include the full articles and posts in the RSS feeds? Or alternatively, would it be possible to have new feeds different from the current ones which include the whole content? If any of these two are doable, it would be MUCH appreciated!

Additionally, for the forum feeds, if the title of the RSS entry included the name of the poster, that would make it even better. When I'm short on time I tend to only read moderator messages, so having that extra info in the title would help a lot.

Duh, I just remembered I had asked this question before. I should have searched to find my own question before posting again :-) In any case, it wasn't really resolved last time, so... any thoughts on it? It would really help...

is it possible to have a full post rss feed?

So for those of us following the new posts via rss on our phones, is there a way to get the full rss feed instead of only the post excerpt?

Or you could ask if the forum software supports a plugin called tapatalk that allows the forum to be browsed easily on any mobile phone using tapatalk. Just a thought.

Although SOTT is custom software, this forum is based on open source. So instead of asking if it is possible to do this and that, maybe go out and see if it has already implemented, at least for the more technical savvy members? Scottie is already very busy supporting multiple websites, thus every bit we can do ourselves before asking him helps. In other words, external consideration...

Just my thought.

Well Simply Machines Forum has a plugin architecture and I know Tapatalk is available as a plugin for various forum software that allows for Tapatalk for iPhone or Android to browse the forums easier.

Hi all,

I think my question was not properly written. I was asking to switch on the full rss, this is something that an admin has to do via the control settings panel or the admin panel of the forum software.
If this forum works similar to others I have seen in the past (phpBB for instance), there is an option to post the RSS feed either as excerpt (so you only read the first 150 words)  or the full entry.

My question was if this was available on this forum, and in case it was, if the admins would like to consider offering the full RSS feed.
If it is not available and it is just a matter of adding a plugin, I will gladly check the internet to find it and send it to any admin to install it.

Just installed the tapatalk plugin on my tablet, wondering if it can be done the same on the forum software to make it easier for those reading it mostly via mobile devices. Tthanks!
