The son of a close friend of mine is facing impending corneal surgery from a viral condition related to the chicken pox virus. From what I understand, the virus, which is not manifesting as shingles, is affecting his cornea. There are two possible surgeries, one of which involves a laser procedure which will operate on, and I'm not sure of this, the third layer of his cornea if there is such a thing.
According to my friend, this surgery may have seriously and negatively affect his vision after a span of about ten years.
More than the surgery, though, my friend is concerned about the viral overload in her son's body. In additon to the infection in his eyes it also manifests as a rash on his back which, again, is not shingles.
Does anyone have any information that will help my friend make an informed decision about how to treat her son who is in his early twenties?
