Websites to order vitamins
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:22:52 PM »
Hi All,

Most of us know that although we try to eat the best that we can, we still have to take vitamins, minerals and amino acids to nourish our body.

I know that many of you have given good websites on many other threads but as to facilitate the search and to help new members to find good websites, i thought that it would be a good idea to start a thread about the best places to buy our vitamins.

So, here are some websites with good prices.

http://www.iherb.com/

http://www.imedmart.com/

http://www.vitacost.com/index.aspx

Edited to add new sites:

http://www.luckyvitamin.com

http://www.vitaminshoppe.com

Also when I'm not a new member, it is really helpful that you brought up these sites and this topic Gandalf. Thank you.
I keep them in mind for my next order.

The first and the last recommended site is also shipping internationally!

I found it somehow difficult to find a page where I could order all supplements I'm looking for, to keep the shipping costs as low as possible (or to pay it only once) and these sites are looking like if they have a really huge sortiment of the stuff we need. :)

It would be nice to see the sites people have found that have supplements without magnesium stearate. I have a few leads, and I will post them once I have investigated a little bit.

At least in one of those sites (iherb), you can find products without magnesium stearate as by example 5 HTP by Now.

You can read the labels to see what is included in the products.

I concur with that comment, and, allied to that, where you can get supplements in powdered form that ship internationally too. I seem to go from site to site to get close to what I want (never quite close enough!) and end up getting little bits here and there, rather than from one site.

This is a good idea, thank you. The sites look like they are cheaper than where I normally get supplements, which is amazon.  :P I didn't know about magnesium stearate either, and I'm pretty sure some of my supplements have it.  :-[

as for as I know , vitacost seems to have LOT of selection and price is also very good.  Next to it,   I use _http://www.swansonvitamins.com is also pretty good in price and selection. Having a vitamin with out magnesium stearate is not a easy thing. It consumes hours and hours to figure out, if any exist. Sharing that information will be useful for all. some have titanium dioxide as a alternative , which is also not good.
Many times  The size of the pill from the  vitacost ( (particularly  vitacost heavily promoted brand like  NSI  . ) is 2 times that of that one from swansonvitamins brands.  some times swanson has good deals like buy one , get one free. that is the time for stocking up things for future.

At least some specify if the source is a vegetarian one, i.e. Now Company.

I just placed an order with luckyvitamin.com and I also use vitaminshoppe.com

Do a search for on-line promotional codes.  I check sites like flamingoworld.com or just google the vitamin site name and "promotional code" for coupon websites.

Depending on who has a code, and who offers free shipping with what dollar amount, I place orders from several sites.  Vitaminshoppe just had a $20 off $150 code (they have free shipping over $99) and wouldn't you know I procrastinated placing the order till till 1/2 and it had expired on 12/31!!

I have often ordered from Lucky Vitamin - http://www.luckyvitamin.com/ - due to their low prices.

To avoid magnesium stearate I would say to buy higher quality supplements.  My chiropractor often gives me products from Premier Research Labs and Thorne which do not use this ingredient.

Premier Research Labs (Round Rock, Texas) Nutrition that Really Works.

PRL's Mission:

   1. Broad Spectrum Nutrients: Every nutrient critical to great health is readily available and in sufficient amounts in our products.
   2. Living Nutrients: The nutrients contained in our formulas are delivered as concentrates from "once" living sources to provide ideal cellular DNA repair and protection, simply not possible from old style, isolated vitamin and mineral properties.
   3. Free of Toxic Tag-alongs: PRL guarantees its cutting edge, phytonutrients power-house formulations are free of tpxic tag-along herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, heavy metals, fumigants, irradiation, etc.
   4. 100% Pure Vegetable Capsules: PRL's products are made with 100% pure vegetable capsules, not as toxic tablets with liver toxic glues and binders or as gelatin capsules with the risk animal-source prions and toxic preservatives.
   5. No Excipients: PRL's products are 100% excipient-free. They do not contain questionable or hard-to-digest, non-nutritive substances such as magnesium stearate (a toxic, hydrogenated oil), silicon dioxide (common sand), methylcellulose, carnuba wax, etc.

PRL Nutraceutical Products are clinically proven to help the body overcome illness and improve health. PRL Products are certified organic, never irradiated. They contain no pesticides or toxic chemicals, and they utilize enzymatic processes for superior phytochemical availability. All PRL Quantum Rx capsules are 100% pure vegetable capsules (Vcaps) instead of tablets which are filled with glues and binders and hardened with heat and pressure or gelatin capsules that use toxic preservatives and are made from animal body parts, such as hooves, which can carry serious diseases. Our vegetable capsules are twice as well absorbed as a gelatin capsule and are free of toxic preservatives. Vcaps are considerably more expensive than gelatin capsules but they are worth the extra investment.
PRL Nutraceuticals are also guaranteed free of milk, corn, soy, salt, sugar, wheat, yeast, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and stearic acid or magnesium stearate.

Thorne's Commitment to Purity

Practitioners have become accustomed to seeing the vague "We use only the purest ingredients" in the promotional materials of almost every dietary supplement company. Perhaps these companies truly believe that. Perhaps they don't know any better. Nevertheless, Thorne Research, for more than 25 years, has been the standard by which companies in the industry are judged for product purity. Practitioners rely on Thorne as the company they trust for their extremely allergic, chemically sensitive, and immune-compromised patients.

Purity Takes Extra Effort
For example, instead of purchasing prediluted vitamin D, as other companies do, Thorne performs its own dilution to avoid detrimental ingredients, such as the preservatives or lactose that are found in many commercially available dilutions. Why must vitamin D be diluted? Because in its pure form, it is too concentrated to safely blend into a vitamin product. Pure vitamin D is 40 MILLION International Units (IU) per gram. The RDA is 400 IU per day. To ensure proper mixing, it must be made into a dilute powder that flows and does not lose potency. So, unlike companies that use prediluted vitamin D with unacceptable excipients and preservatives, at Thorne, pure pharmaceutical vitamin D is first gently melted with pure mixed tocopherol vitamin E, and the resultant stable vitamin D is then blended with hypoallergenic magnesium citrate powder. The resulting powder is then run through a high-speed mill while liquid nitrogen is injected to eliminate heat and stickiness. The final powder is blended again in a large tumble blender and subsequently analyzed. Not only is the final product stable; it is also hypoallergenic and can be mixed homogeneously and at a safe level with other powders. Just as with vitamin D, Thorne utilizes similar processes for other raw materials, such as vitamin K, leaving it to other companies to purchase commercially available raw materials filled with unacceptable ingredients and preservatives.

Ingredients You Don't Want
Magnesium Stearate: Good for speed-hungry encapsulating machines. Not necessarily good for you. Manufacturing encapsulated dietary supplements isn't easy. Pure powdered ingredients are difficult to mix because they are either extremely dry, sticky with botanical oils, or attract unwanted moisture. So most manufacturers add magnesium stearate and other agents such as lactose and dextrose to make the powder flow quickly and easily through their high-volume machines. Problem is, these additives may compromise the bioavailability of the nutrients in the supplement, and might cause allergenic problems. At Thorne, we take a different approach.

Thorne will never utilize large fatty acid excipients in its manufacturing processes – ingredients such as magnesium stearate or stearic acid. These excipients are utilized as flowing agents to ensure that maximum productivity is obtained from capsuling and tableting machines. There are documented detrimental effects directly attributed to long chain fatty acids utilized as manufacturing flowing agents. Every qualified pharmaceutical compounder recognizes that large fatty acids, such as magnesium stearate, can interfere with product dissolution and influence absorption. Virtually all companies, because of the economic impact, ignore this data. As with most industries, the bottom line dictates the level of quality. The dietary supplement industry has one exception: Thorne Research, the company that does not compromise. Nevertheless, if a company cannot manufacture products without using detrimental excipients, they should not allude to being either "hypoallergenic" or "pure."

The Bottom Line?
Thorne is the only hypoallergenic dietary supplement manufacturer with the highest degree of purity that you – and your most severely allergic, chemically sensitive, and immune-compromised patients – can truly trust.

Is brown rice powder the same as brown rice flour? I have seen the flour at Auchan.

After checking, yeah it seems to be the same thing… and of course, they do sell brown rice flour in France.
I wonder why these 2 designations -- brown rice powder and brown rice flour -- are used then.

Brown rice protein (protein powder) should be a concentrated blend of amino acids, it is a supplement:
_http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/brown-rice-protein/

The brown rice flour is for cooking purposes, not necessarily an extract of concentrated amino acids.
