Magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit central Italy, N of L'Aquila half an hour ago! Tha same area is getting massive snowfall (2m+). Map: EMSC

This is quite sad and very frustrating. It looks like these earthquakes are just never going to stop. :(

Four 5+ quakes in three hours it's a "new phenomenon in recent history" as described by INGV, and at least seven 4+ quakes and several threes too.

Yesterday there was a huge fire in Genoa, then this morning Pescara (Abruzzo) got flooded by rain, strong winds in Trieste, heavy snow Center-Sud Italy, a sweep of "hot" winds on the Adriatic Sea side, then the quakes. :O

Very tough for people. Here is the snow in some areas that adds to the problem.

It is interesting that the earthquakes are not being reported.
My cousin in New Zealand informs me that the earthquakes there have been continuous since that big 7+ a while ago. They have had over 3,000 quakes since then. How many have you seen reported.

It is also interesting that Italy is almost exactly on the opposite side of the planet to New Zealand.
(just as Peru is opposite Banda Aceh in Indonesia)

The whole situation is giving me the willies; like waiting for a big shoe to drop.

Hope you are well Dantem. It sounds as if Italy is being struck by all five elements. And adding to the above, the avalanche that struck a hotel in Italy yesterday: https://www.sott.net/article/340066-Up-to-30-people-feared-dead-as-Italian-hotel-is-buried-by-avalanche-after-four-earthquakes-hit-the-region

Good to know you are safe, Dantem! First was the earthquake and now this horrible avalanche too. What a tough beginning of the year for Italy. :(

Yeah. January started super busy here at work, and it's been a 'fortune' that the epicenter was slightly farther away this time, so no damages around by now. Thanks!

Stay safe Dantem and keep us updated on conditions there. I'm amazed at the amount of snow that Italy has received on top of the earthquakes. When the snow begins to melt, flooding might be a big problem

They found some survivors in that avalanche.

On Friday, up to eight people have been found alive inside the avalanche-hit hotel in Italy, Rainews24 TV channel reports.

One survivor has already been taken to the hospital on a rescue helicopter.

There are six adults and two little girls among the survivors,
Rainews24 reports. They were found under the attic beams.

The weather in the area of the rescue operation has improved, making it easier for the rescuers to carry out the search. The snowfall has stopped, and the air temperature has risen

Earlier today, local media reported that six people were found alive and conscious at the Rigopiano di Farindola.

So far, bodies of four victims of the avalanche near a hotel at the Alpine resort of Farindola in the central Italian Pescara province have been recovered by security services.

According to Rainews 24 broadcaster citing the rescue services, a total of 34 people were in the hotel of whom 28 are still unaccounted four.

The avalanche occurred at the base of the Gran Sasso mountain range on Wednesday, wreaking havoc at the Rigopiano di Farindola hotel.

Earlier that day, a series of four earthquakes shook central Italy. The magnitude of the earthquakes ranged between 5.1 and 5.7. Italian authorities issued an avalanche warning following the three quakes.

Another landslide, this one hit a hotel in central China.

At least two people were killed and 10 are still missing after a landslide hit a hotel in central China causing partial collapse of the building.

21.01.2017 - The incident occurred on Friday in the Nanzhang County of the Hubei province when over 100,000 cubic feet of debris slid down a slope, the Xinhua news agency reported citing firefighters on Saturday.

The hotel’s collapse is said to have left 15 people trapped under the debris. Rescuers managed to pull five people from the debris but two of them died later in a hospital. The search and rescue operation continues.

Due to earthquakes and Iran's infrastructure of older buildings in it's Capital of Tehran, they are considering - moving the Capital.

The tragic collapse of the Plasco Building in Tehran raises concerns whether the Iranian capital should be relocated from its seismically dangerous region.

Iran's Capital May Be Relocated Due to Risk of Devastating Earthquakes
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201701211049853600-tehran-earthquake-threat/

Despite the fact that the iconic Plasco Building was constructed in 1962 by leading Iranian engineers, a major fire that broke out in the high-rise on January 19 didn't just ravaged the structure; it caused it to collapse.

The fact that a fire could cause so much destruction prompted the Iranian public to wonder what might happen to other buildings in Tehran in the event of a major earthquake.

Bahram Akkasheh, a prominent geophysicist who is known as 'the father of Iranian seismology', told Sputnik Persian that the authorities should urgently consider either relocating the capital to a less-dangerous area or at least improve the earthquake resistance of buildings in Tehran.

"Virtually all of Iran’s territory is a seismically active area. About 83 percent of our cities are located in seismically dangerous areas, with another 16 percent in somewhat safer territory. Only 1 percent of our settlements, about a thousand small towns and villages where the probability of an earthquake is the smallest, can be considered safe," Akkasheh said.

He further explained that 20 years ago, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council tasked him to analyze seismic loading and provide substantial evidence confirming that Tehran is a seismically dangerous zone – a task that Akkasheh successfully completed.

"I offered three types of anti-seismic measures. My first and main proposal was to ensure that all buildings have earthquake-resistant structures. The second proposal was to establish a crisis headquarters to coordinate relief efforts in the aftermath of devastating earthquakes; and the third proposal was to relocate the capital," the geophysicist said.

He also added that while the crisis headquarters was indeed created, the issue of capital’s relocation, while initially approved by then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was eventually put on hold and apparently abandoned.

But unless proper precautions are taken, a powerful earthquake may wreak untold destruction in Tehran, a city with a population of 15 million and a considerable seismic load.

The capital’s relocation would be an arduous and lengthy process that may take up to several years to complete. On the other hand, if we use funds that could theoretically be allocated for this task to instead improve the earthquake resistance of the existing buildings, that would be a prudent move. Previously the capital of Iran was located in Tabriz (for 50 years), Qazvin (for 40 years), Shiraz (for 16 years) and Isfahan (for 138 years). As for Tehran, choosing this city to be our capital was a big mistake in my opinion. Alas, our people don’t take into account the fact that the main cause of earthquakes is located below Earth’s crust, not above it," he said.
