Has anyone seen or heard of a plane just disappearing?

Just witnessed something rather odd outside my home in California.

A visiting friend had just left, and as I was going back inside, I felt the need to look up to the sky. When I did, I immediately spotted a small darker colored 2 wing (or possibly 4 wings, 2 stack on either side) airplane flying at in an unusual direction and an unusual altitude of about 4,000-6,000 feet. I'm familiar with all the flight paths and local airports here, and this one was out of the ordinary as it was flying directly toward the coast, not toward any airport, too low to be cruising overseas, and too high to be making an approach for a landing. It was unlike any plane I'd ever seen around here, but just high enough that I couldn't make out any details, but it was not very big. Watched it for a solid 30 seconds or longer, and it was on a path to be visible for the next 3-5 minutes at least, and not flying terribly fast or anything. Just odd enough to make me want to watch it a little longer.

I looked down for less than 5 seconds, and when I looked up again, this thing was gone. Not there. Clear blue sunny skies, not a single cloud to be seen, no possible visual obstructions in the line of sight. I spent almost 5 minutes walking around in disbelief as I attempted to relocate it, having a hard time accepting that I just watched a 'plane' vanish in plain sight. But that is definitely what happened, 100%.

Fwiw, I'm the kind of guy that has been on the lookout for UFOs since I was a kid - but have never seen anything that would undeniably qualify as such until now.

Has anyone heard reports of this type of activity before?

That is strange. I've seen something similar (or at least I think I've seen it) where a plane of odd shape on what appears to be a straight flight path, disappears behind a small cloud. After continuing to watch for the plane to come out from behind the cloud, it never does. I've seen this happen on several occasions all in broad daylight. Maybe it was an optical illusion of some sort, but it sure was odd.
 
Standing topside watches in the Navy and having a lot of experience spotting and tracking air contacts, there's a few things I've picked up along the way. One of them is, never take your eyes off the plane. Re-acquiring an object once you look away can be extremely difficult. The contrast between the object and the sky does something to your retinas, burns an after-image in the spot of your retina you're using to see the object, and it can make a false shadow when you look back into the sky, obscuring the object. Your mind automatically discounts the shadow as a non-object, but anything inside the shadow is essentially invisible.

Also, you don't mention the time of day, but if it's late afternoon in California, trying to see an object headed out to sea is also forcing you to look towards the sun.

I'm to the point when I think I see something I won't blink or take my eyes off it until either I can reason it out or my eyes hurt...
That's about when a bug flies into my eye...

Laura mentioned something similar in the Wave. The C's suggested that the plane she saw wasn't actually a plane. I don't have the time right now to look up the reference, though.

I've noticed that before as well, but always wrote it off to what Whitebear writes below:

Having always been interested in watching planes fly by, I know exactly what you are talking about. Once a few months ago a friend spotted a super high flying UAV type of thing, and I tried to track it, but keep losing it every time I looked down because it was so tiny way up there. So I am familiar with that weakness in human observation.

This plane was much, much lower. It was so low, and so close to my house still when I 'lost it', there is no possibility it could have been due to contrast as has happened to me before.

It was late morning (10:30ish), but I got the direction wrong, it was flying due south after checking Google maps. But still have never seen a plane on this path before, and there are many that fly by every day. It also had no noise associated with it, but I wrote it off at the time as being just far enough away to not hear. But I'm not sure that is actually true, as I have heard plane engines higher in altitude and further away before.

I've questioned myself in the past, but not this time. I am quite certain in what I saw, which is unusual and a first for me and this type of situation. I'm big on debunking and logical explanations - this thing was clearly visible, no searching required, and then it really was just not there anymore, poof. Instantly.

And yes, I smacked myself metaphorically for looking down those 3 or 4 seconds!!! :D

I thought I'd remembered reading something similar awhile back as well, but wasn't sure.

It is also interesting to note, that the scene from The Matrix keeps appearing in my head last 2 weeks about the "glitch" when the cat walks by twice. This was normal, as I had rewatched the movie two weeks ago. But then 3 days ago, while watching TV (a rare event for me) I flipped the few channels I get, and landed on, you guessed it, The Matrix, and it was that exact scene with the cat and the glitch.

There was no emotional response elicited in this event, but it did certainly feel like a mysterious 'glitch in the matrix' and that was the first thing I thought about afterwards.

As all may be aware of the military has been actively involved in the technology of cloaking materials, and application's for plane's or fighter jets for while. Wounder if that was what were witnessing. I've have seen typical con, or chemtrails trials, left with out being able to see the lead of the craft developing them, like it was not visible. Some of the tech has do with bending light, around an object as related to this article. :whistle:

I had a similar experience last year Jason. I was out walking the dog one winter night of 2009 when I spotted a airplane with very strong strobe light. I live under a corridor for trans Atlantic flight so the plane are usually pretty high, over 30,000 feet, the sky was clear, no cloud what so ever and I followed that plane as it flew over head and saw it pass in front of 3 stars. Those strobe light were so incredibly powerful, they were flashing non-stop what is unusual I thought. As it flew over head, I looked somewhere else to look at a very bright star for a few moment (5 sec. at most) and when I looked back where the plane should have bean, nada, nothing, rien! From where I live and where I was, I can see for miles toward the direction the plane was heading and unless it as switched it strobe light off, there is no explanation for it no been visible any longer.

Yep, that's it. I knew it sounded familiar, but didn't remember how identical it was to my experience! Thanks for finding that SAO.

That is a really interesting story about the tank cloak, first time reading about that. I'd heard the various prototype cloak stories over the years, but I didn't realize it had progressed so far that they were openly discussing/revealing the tech. And that was years ago!

Another interesting possibility I considered - the area where the plane disappeared is very close to an abandoned airfield/airport that shut down a few decades ago (it has been one of the first ever in this area). Maybe it was some sort of ghost plane. :huh:

In a period of high strangeness in my life, there was also the pattern of the disappearing bright light. It looked in between a very bright star and a satellite, moving very slowly. It would shine very brightly and then disappear. Sometimes during the day as well. It was just weird.

I use to get hose all the time....especially when I was young and then again when I was a teenager. I remember watching these random strobe lights one night, that would blink....then disappear, only to reappear somewhere else in the sky at random....then another one showed up....and another
Other than night dog fight simulations by the RAF (which seems unlikely because I couldn't hear anything)....I couldn't work out what they where.

The ones in daylight are even weirder. I remember seeing what I thought was a helicopter (because it was very slow moving) from my school bus (bright summer afternoon with absolutely no clouds in the sky), with a very weird strobe light arrangement....I followed this on and off as long as I could...after 20 minutes or so it appeared to climb to really high altitude and faded out in plane sight above me.
None of my friends appeared interested in watching it when I pointed it out... :rolleyes:

I've had this happen at night awhile back, but always wrote it off to bad eyesight (I'm extremely near-sighted). I'll pay closer attention next time! For me they were only like small random flashes of light here and there, but with all our atmospheric gases and whatnot I often just figured it was the natural visibility of the starfield increasing and decreasing.

Ghost plane. Jogged my memory about a ghost train. Some years ago I worked at a lumber yard. Along the west side of the yard was railroad track, it was a main line that ran right through town and had a siding where they dropped freight cars off for us.

The track was eclipsed by two warehouses so a passing train could not see from the yard but you could hear the horn and feel the ground rumble when a train passed.

One day I walked out into the yard with a customer. We were talking but soon we could not hear each other because of the rumble of a train passing on the other side of the warehouses. Even saw the diesel exhaust over the roofs of the buildings and heard the horn as it approached the crossing. After it passed I finished helping the customer and went back inside the store.

It took a few minutes but then I thought "What in the Hell!" I remembered that they had closed the track a month before and had even begun to tear up some of the track! A train going by was such a common occurrence it seemed quite normal.

I asked one the others who worked there if they had heard it. He looked at me like I was loosing it.

Very weird.

Disappearing Planes...

I experienced a "disappearing plane" phenomenon a few weeks back. I live directly under a flight path, so commercial vehicles are passing over constantly. I have taken to watching them for as long as they hold my attention, mostly just for practice. This recent plane was against a cloudless blue sky, and pulled a "now you see it, now you don't" in the amount of time it took me to glance to my left and back again.

I seem to remember Laura talking about this in one of the Wave Series. Is this a common occurrence among those that keep their eyes peeled to the sky? I mean, it certainly isn't orange pulsing lights or black boomerangs. Still, It remains quite puzzling...
