A body has been discovered by tourists at the infamous Dyatlov Pass in Russia’s Ural Mountains where nine hikers mysteriously died in 1959. Emergency services have reportedly momentarily lost contact with the group.

An unidentified body has been discovered by tourist-hikers at the infamous Dyatlov pass in Sverdlovskaya region, according to local security officials. A group of nine tourists reportedly from Perm contacted emergency services overnight on Friday.

Following a message from the group via satellite phone officials lost contact with the hikers, reported V-kurse.ru. Due to bad weather conditions emergency groups are unable to reach the barely-accessible site where the body was found. Some reports suggest that it is a male of about 50 years old.

The travelers began their journey on January 1 trekking along one of the most difficult paths starting from North Ural to the town of Ivdel, according to the emergency services.

ANOTHER group of 9 hikers??

This looks like already a THIRD group of nine perished/lost people, if we also take this ancient legend into account:

Intriguingly, Mansi legend has it that Kholat-Syakhl received it’s ominous name after nine Mansi warriors had mysteriously perished on the same peak years before. This has led some investigators to surmise that the region might be cursed or infested by ancient and malicious spirits, but for the most part the mountain was not considered to be a particularly sacred region by the Mansi.

Couldn't find it in English yet, but Russian Emergencies and Disaster Response claim that the tourist group is safe and sound, and that they didn't disappear, but keep in constant communication along their route.

Here's article in Russian.

Just wanted to give an update on the story. It was determined that the body belongs to Oleg Borodin, who settled on the Dyatlov Pass about two years ago and lived as a hermit in very poor conditions. Here's the only article that I could find in English about it. It seems like an automated translation from Russian, though.

The general impression of people who passed through the place where he lived, that he was odd and perhaps not particularly stable. Two years ago he suddenly changed his habits and left his home, supposedly to join a sect. But then none knows why he ended up in the Dyatlov Pass. So not sure if there are any supernatural aspects here. But will see. The investigation is still ongoing.

In any case, there is a truly fascinating and interesting lecture by Vadim Chernobrov, who is a Russian John Keel+David Paulides combined, and who is the head of "Kosmopoisk" association. Pity it is only in Russian. And he talks about this place and region in general, and how death of 9 tourists back in 1959 was only one case out of many other mysterious and unexplained cases of disappearances and deaths. He also refutes all kind of nonsensical theories and ideas, like for example that it was a secret government assassination, etc.

In the lecture he analyzed various curious facts and forensic data, but he also mentioned that various oddities started even before the final moments of their lives. According to him there were all kind of details that indicated that something strange happened in the evening, and when they were still preparing for the night. He said that they were experienced tourists that knew how to behave and what needed to be done before going to sleep in such extreme weather. And that their diaries indicate that they all had their assigned roles and responsibilities.

And yet, for some strange reason they stopped doing whatever they were doing (like making fire or eating sandwiches that one of the girls prepared), and instead started to work on the wall newspaper (a common thing to do among activist communist students). They didn't finish it either, but they did write the title in big letters: "Now we know - "snowmen" exist in Kanten!" (Kanten is the name of their region. Perhaps spelled differently, not sure). Back then investigators thought that students referred to themselves as "snowmen", but in Russian it is the name of Yeti too. Chernobrov says that we can't know for sure, and then moves on to talking about the events that happened later on.

If you know Russian, the lecture is highly recommended. In overall, it seems like whatever happened included several phenomena, like ball lightning, ELF, etc.

I was sure we asked the Cs about it but I just searched and can't find anything. I reckon this one will be put on the list of questions for the next session! Totally weird.

Nice idea ! ;)

I remember reading about the Dyatlov Pass incident, thinking that it was almost too stereotypical in how it contains all the elements of typical horror stories.

1) Ancient Legend warns of the evils associated with an ominous place. In the legend, 9 people perish.
2) A group of 9 young people go on an innocent hike there, and promptly disappear.
3) Upon being found, the mystery thickens because all the little gritty details are particularly weird, from radioactivity to missing tongues.

If I remember it right, none of them had their shoes on.

Now compare it to Missing 411:

7) Conscious or semiconscious state: I understand that when a person goes missing for an extended period of time without food or water, hallucinations can occur; however, these conditions were prevalent even when those factors did not exist. You will read about cases where the missing were found unconscious, lying on the ground, and when questioned later, have no recollection of how they went missing. In some cases the missing do recall facts surrounding their disappearance, and those facts make for interesting reading.

9) Clothing removed: In numerous cited cases, the missing person is found and at least one major piece of clothing has disappeared or they are inexplicably completely naked.

What if they got misplaced through a "glitch" and in the ensuing semi-conscious chaos got lost, trying to make sense of their surroundings and then died of hypothermia?

Question for Russian speakers - does Diatlov Pass means something? Woodpecker's Pass? Or something more diabolical?

As far as I know the Mountain where they were getting at, is known by the natives as something like "mountain of the devil."

Haven't had any free time to watch this yet - but its on my list - seems its exploring yeti explanation for Diatlov pass incident

https://youtu.be/3taDQgXT_6o

We watched it last week and there is apparently very interesting new information in there, of what happed. The thing is that the discovery channel completely over-hyped the data there in a american sensionalistic way, so much, that you wonder at the end how much of the information in there is actually true and how much is made up, to get as much views as possible.

If we assume that the actual data there is true and not made up, it still almost sounds to good to be true.

Basically they interview two local people, who claim that they were the first ones that officially found the dead bodies. Those two guys say that that they found unusual footprints near the tend,,probably bigfoot or something. Then they interviewed some local people from a tribe who were initially suspected to have murdered the hikers, by investigators.

Those natives claimed that they encountered the hikers and rather directly/routhly told them to not go to the "mountain of the devil", because it is a forbidden and dangerous area. The hikers went on anyway, which was kind of foolish (if true) IMO, to ignore those warnings from the natives.

Later in the documentary they apparently get to see a never before seen secret russian file from the military, which proofs that the military was there, before the hikers weare oficially discovered. That military file also includes a picture of those footprints, the eye witnisses claimed to have seen. That picture doesn't look very clear, so I dunno... A couple of other pictures who were made by the hikers before they died, were also in the file. One of those pictures shows something that the documentary producers claim to be lights in the sky. Hard to tell IMO... And one of the last pictures the hikers took, is in the file as well: Clearly a picture of a Bigfoot like creature next to a tree...

And the kicker: In that russian military file, one of the last statements of a hiker, from his dairy, was recorded as saying something like: "Now we know that the snow man exists"....

So if any of that is true, it suggest that bigfoot and/or ufo activity was involved in some way...

Nothing diabolical. It is a surname of the disappeared group's leader. Igor Dyatlov. It was renamed after their deaths. But indeed before the local gave it a more sinister name: a mountain of dead, or a mountain of nine dead, because there were several accidents that involved deaths of nine people.

Also, pity that you don't know Russian, because the video I mention in the previous post talks about many so called strange facts and photographs and gives them a logical explanation, but also on the other hand does mention curious things too. Here's the relevant quote:

Thank you Pashalis - i think I might watch it, and thank you Keit for translation, interesting info.

This is a really strange and weird story, how the bodies were when they found them... Here is a little video about this case, it looks serious and you can see some pictures of the bodies. Weird!

Thank you Z for the video The Killes lives. It looks good!

It is an interesting mystery.

I noticed a game has been made about it - it appears to be an 'atmospheric exploration' game with horror themes. I doubt the game developers theory comes close to the truth - but any theory is interesting. I often wonder if media entertainment developed on the subject of these sorts of mysteries are funded to deliberately disarm or divert attention or encourage the view that it's just a fantastic mystery to shrug off.
