Civil War in Ukraine: Western Empire vs Russia

Sharii proposes a theory, that it has to do with future election in Ukraine.

Sharii proposes a theory, that it has to do with future election in Ukraine.
Yeah, I read that, but I think that the reason can be closer. It is, in essence, is the same as said Shary was a provocation, but the occasion can serve at this time a procession. There have already been warnings from the radicals about that in "the event that" none of the participants move alive from Kiev will come. I will try to find the link.
For example here's one proposal of a "political scientist"
http://maxpark.com/community/politic/content/5325519
The famous Ukrainian "patriot" and a political analyst Yuri Romanenko has offered to inform all participants of the procession for peace in the Donbass, which the UOC MP began yesterday, a crucifixion on the cross.
According to the analyst, this must be done because the procession "organized by the Kremlin".
"Moscow priests are trying to organize a procession from LDNR to Kiev. Correct to say that the Moscow priests, and the Kremlin with the support of the Moscow priests.
How should we act? First, all channels need to say that behind the front line, all participants of the cross stroke will be crucified on the cross. Second, set the crosses on the roadsides. The effect will be stunning," — said Romanenko on his page in the social network.
Launched yesterday, the Ukrainian religious procession of peace, love and prayer for Ukraine will be held across 12 dioceses of the UOC.
It is organized on the initiative of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
More than three hundred of Orthodox believers from Eastern Ukraine, went to Kiev.
And on July 9 to meet them will go a column from the Western Ukraine. There is a column begin to move from the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra.
They will unite on July 27, and then will hold a joint Church service in kiyevo-Pechersky monastery, devoted to the celebration of the baptism of Rus.
The main idea, according to organizers of this action, the establishment of peace in Ukraine.

We Will Soon See Russia Accused of the Murder of Journalist Pavel Sheremet in Kiev
Alexei Pankin 3 hours ago
http://russia-insider.com/en/politics/we-will-soon-see-russia-accused-murder-journalist-kiev/ri15747
Pavel Sheremet is best remembered in Russia as Boris Berezovsky’s hired gun. In the 1990s, as the Minsk correspondent of ORT (Channel 1), then owned by the powerful oligarch, he was responsible for journalistic provocations against Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko, who refused to grant Berezovsky’s businesses special privileges. One of these provocations – the illegal crossing of the Belarussian-Lithuanian border - landed him in prison, provoking an international "freedom of the press" campaign against "Europe’s last dictator", Lukashenko.

Subsequently, Sheremet moved to Russia to become Berezovsky’s "information killer" on ORT in the dirtiest ever Duma election campaign of 1999, in which the oligarch successfully fought to eliminate political opponents of Boris Yeltsin, such as Yevgeny Primakov.

This was probably the last trace he left in Russian national journalism before moving to the Ukraine. By a sinister irony of fate, Sheremet died in a car belonging to Alyona Pritula, ex-mistress of the journalist Georgy Gongadze, who had been decapitated in a run-up to the "Orange Revolution" of 2004, the blame being placed on then President Leonid Kuchma.

This would explain why many experienced Russian journalists refuse to consider their profession as the main reason for his assassination, predicting that the incident would be turned against Russia.

The forecast below, made almost immediately after Sheremet’s death, came true before RI had time to translate an editorial from NA Linii (On Line) magazine, which features some of the most knowledgeable conservative Russian columnists.

The well-known post-Soviet journalist Pavel Sheremet has been assassinated in Kiev. His car exploded as he approached it from his home.

Pavel Sheremet left Belorussia because he disagreed with the country’s policies in the 1990s. In 2014, he left Russia because he disagreed with its policies, in particular with respect to the coup in Ukraine and the following civil war in the Donbass.

He hosted TV and radio programs in Ukraine, and explained his departure in the following manner:

“I was more and more in disagreement with what was going on in Russia: I saw what was really going on in Ukraine, while there were fantasies about it in Russia. I talked to my friends and saw that they were going out of their mind. It was impossible to stay in that insane asylum: I had to leave in order not to either go crazy or become as stupid as your colleagues. I was not so much annoyed as disappointed, and was trying to show them what was really going on, but they called me a ‘libertard’ and a non-patriot. At some point, this got to me, and I understood that it was impossible to stay in the same boat with these people.

I didn’t abandon my citizenship. I love Russia, though I hate the current regime. Society has gone out of its mind there as well. Huge catastrophes and shocks await – this has been especially obvious since Nemtsov was killed.”

Pavel Sheremet lived and worked in Kiev, cooperating with Ukrayinska Pravda newspaper. The owner of the car that killed the journalist was the director of the periodical Alyona Pritula

By moving from Russia to Ukraine, Sheremet chose a regime controlled by oligarchs who constantly clashed with each other, using purges in tame state structures or force by so-called armed activists.

In this situation, the chances of a journalist becoming an accidental or non-accidental victim increase drastically. However, we can expect “delayed revenge of the Kremlin" to feature as the main version in the Ukrainian media.

About fraud losses and concealment of fighting in the Donbass.
Kharkiv military hospital reports major losses in the UAF, "Russian Spring" advises the Ukrainian conscripts to buy tickets to Bryansk or Belarus.

Battles in Donbas, of course not, and the losses the Ukrainian army is not responsible. In any case, according to official reports. And now look at the page of the Kharkiv military hospital "Sister of mercy of the ATO".
19 Jul 10:08 ·
Over the weekend received 43 persons from the area ATO.
July 20 8:30 ·
Did 32 people, wounded, severe, trauma.
On 20 July at 23:25 ·
Received 29 people, wounded, severe, trauma.
Compare, by the way, the scale. Before: the message of 15 July about 10 seriously wounded. July 14 — 11 wounded. July 12 — 16 wounded. 11 Jul: "arrived on Saturday 22 people and 6 people on Sunday. The guys talked about the heavy fighting and losses."
And this is only one of the Kharkiv hospital.
Officially "on 18 July killed seven members of the Armed forces of Ukraine and 14 were injured". And the rest? Well, probably blown themselves on air conditioners, said the Ukrainian General staff.
In this regard, I would like to remind the Ukrainian conscripts that they can always move the Russian border. To obtain a patent for the employment that allows you to live and work in Russia, quite easy and inexpensive. It is possible in Belarus. There to get even easier.
Medical treatment or a funeral definitely will go higher.

Billionaire George Soros is concerned about the situation in Turkey following Friday's failed coup attempt. Warning that Ankara could soon be moving closer to Moscow, the billionaire suggested that Ukraine may now be the EU's last line of defense against an array of threats.

Soros Says Ukraine Could Become Giant Refugee Camp for EU in Turkey's Place
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160722/1043451734/soros-ukraine-turkey-refugees-commentary.html

Interviewed by the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Soros, the billionaire philanthropist known in Eastern Europe for financing color revolutions, warned that the present waning of the migration crisis in Europe is temporary, and that the continent cannot hope to preserve the current situation indefinitely.

The business magnate emphasized that the number of migrants from Muslim countries is set to rise, and that the ratio of migrants to Europeans will worsen accordingly. He noted that Europe's ongoing migration crisis is one of the reasons the European Union is in "mortal danger," and that this problem must be resolved as quickly as possible.

The failed coup attempt in Turkey also increases the level of uncertainty, according to Soros, and could affect Ankara's agreement with Brussels on keeping migrants out of Europe. In any case, Soros doesn't believe that the EU should build its refugee policy on the basis of this agreement.

"One thing is clear," Soros said. "Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now seeking some kind of reconciliation with Russia and Vladimir Putin. I do not know what his motives are. Perhaps he wants Turkey to become a balancing factor in relations between Russia and Europe. In any case, the agreement between the EU and Turkey is a very weak foundation on which to build the EU's refugee policy."

At the same time, commenting on the possible solutions to the threats facing the EU project, Soros reiterated that one of the countries that could help rescue the bloc is Ukraine. "The EU must defend itself from external enemies and recognize that Ukraine is the most important resource at its disposal for ensuring its security."

Russian commentators didn't know quite what to make of Soros' remarks, except to say that what the billionaire was implying was using Ukraine as a pawn, perhaps all the way up to turning the country into a giant dumping ground for Middle Eastern refugees in Turkey's place. That country presently holds about 2.6 million refugees from Syria.

Svetlana Gomzikova, a columnist for Russia's Svobodnaya Pressa online newspaper, recalled that this wasn't the first time that Ukraine has been presented as Europe's 'last line of defense' from external threats.

"Generally, if Europe has no one else to defend it against Europe, it's not really in an enviable position," the journalist wrote. At the same time, she added, "Soros' commentary repeats almost word for word the declarations of Ukrainian politicians when they travel to the West to ask for money."

In late May, at a ceremony where the EU flag was raised over Ukraine's Presidential Administration, President Poroshenko declared that "today it is us, Ukrainians, who are defending Europe from barbarism, defending it against the tyranny, terrorism, aggression, and militarism which hangs over our continent."

"Soros," Gomzikova suggested, "likely understands the 'threat' to Europe to consist of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa. But how Ukraine will be able to save the Europeans from this phenomenon is completely incomprehensible."

Asked to comment on Soros' pseudo-proposal, political commentator Armen Gasparyan told the online newspaper that in a situation where Ukraine is overrun by armed ultranationalist volunteer battalions, many of them now officially integrated into the country's security services, it's unlikely that these forces will simply accept the idea of placing hundreds of thousands of non-European refugees in their country.

As for Soros' comments, Gasparyan suggested that the billionaire is simply protecting his business assets. "He has invested huge sums in Ukraine through his various [civil society] funds, going back all the way to the early 1990s. And the events of 2014 were a golden period for Soros – his Klondike."

How can Soros protect his assets? Only through promotion. Because there is nothing else for Ukraine to offer Europe today; its industry is destroyed, the country is in a dire economic and political situation, and continues to be in a state of war…What's left? What's left, forgive me for being rude, is to create a reservation."

Still, Gasparyan noted, if that is what Soros was implying with his commentary, it's unlikely that his plan will succeed. "Because when Ukraine's population finds out that someone intends to move half a million Arabs into their country, it will result in an immediate social explosion. Integrating even ten people into a society with very different beliefs, a different religion, a different weltanschauung, is incredibly difficult. And here we're talking about hundreds of thousands of people."

Ultimately, the commentator recalled, Soros' main goal through all his initiatives is to preserve and grow his capital. "What happens in Ukraine – in Poltava, Sumy, or Kherson, is not his concern. He's not going to live there in twenty years, or have to sort through the ethnic clashes which would be guaranteed to take place there" if his plans materialized.

In any case, Gasparyan noted, European officials are unlikely to agree to such plans anyway. "Europe is already exhausted by Ukraine," and will not be willing to finance refugees' presence on Ukrainian territory. "If the EU has no money for Italy, Portugal, Greece and others, where is it going to find money for Ukraine?" the commentator concluded.

Comfortable conditions for the Russian opposition should be created in Ukraine so that they can feel at home. Such an opinion was expressed by the head of the Radical Party of Ukraine, Oleg Lyashko, while commenting on the publication of the “Friends of Ukraine 2016” list.

"Make yourself at home": Ukrainian Radical leader invites Russian opposition
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/07/make-yourself-at-home-ukrainian-radical.html

The head Ukrainian Radical expressed words of gratitude to all opposition figures in Russia who support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and are telling the “truth” about the situation in the country.

“Everyone who supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, our independence, and our sovereignty are without a doubt our allies. We are sincerely grateful that they have the strength to tell the truth about the situation in Ukraine,” he stated.

Lyashko urged Ukraine to help these people in any way and, if necessary, offer them shelter.

“Everyone in Ukraine feels free. And Ukraine’s friends should also feel themselves at home in our country,” the radical asserted.

The list of "Friends of Ukraine" included: Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Vladimir Ryzhkov, Grigory Yavlinsky, Mikhail Kasyanov, Garry Kasparov, Andrey Makarevich, Ilya Ponomarev, Dmitry Gudkov, Ilya Yashin, Oleg Kashin, Alexei Navalny, Ksenia Sobchak, Liya Akhedzhakova, Viktor Shenderovich, Boris Akunin, Alexander Nevzorov, Evgeny Chirikov, Matvey Ganapolsky, Mikhail Kozyrev, Dmitry Oreshkin, Konstantin Borovoy, Gennady Gudkov, Artemy Troitsky and Yuri Shevchuk.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, has appealed to the UN with an official letter in which he requests that pressure be put on Ukraine in order to prevent the resumption of full-scale hostilities in Donbass. In Churkin’s opinion, Kiev is preparing a military operation, and his letter cites data on Ukrainian security forces’ shelling of civilian residential areas in Donbass “within the last week alone.” The number of these bombardments has grown dramatically.

Churkin writes letter to UN: A final warning for Ukraine
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/07/churkin-writes-letter-to-un-final.html

Churkin is known for his professionalism and poise. Obviously, only the most extreme circumstances could have compelled him take such an extraordinary step. Moreover, this is not the first appeal by such a high-ranking Russian diplomat to international and foreign institutions. The Foreign Ministry of Russia’s State Secretary Grigory Karasin already met with the ambassadors of France and Germany on this subject and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone talk with the presidents of the US, France, and the German Chancellor. According to Karl Marx’s famous formula, quantity turns into quality. In our case, the number of shellings of Donbass’ cities by the UAF and neo-Nazi battalions risks turning into a new, full-scale war.

It should be admitted that Kiev’s tactics are quite effective. Shellings cause tangible losses while also exerting psychological pressure on the republics. The purpose of such frequent attacks is provoking return fire by the DPR and LPR’s armies. Then Kiev would accuse the Donbass republics (and of course Russia) of tearing up the Minsk Agreements, and call upon the international community to intervene in the conflict. By “international community,” of course, is meant NATO. At the NATO summit in Warsaw, words of support for Kiev against “Russian aggression” were heard along with promises to provide military and technological assistance. It is possible that these and other measures of support are being prepared. Most likely, this is not Ukraine’s accession to NATO, but NATO’s accession to Ukraine, i.e., an actual occupation of Ukrainian territory by the alliance. This could come about in the form of establishing permanent military bases and upgrading equipment and manpower.

My friends from the military and political circles of the DPR report that the sheer force of UAF attacks is reminiscent of the most difficult days of summer, 2014. But the republics are not afraid of fire. On the contrary, they are waiting for when Ukraine will go on a new offensive in order to then bury the Ukrainian army on Donbass land. Ukraine has already been given two chances to stop (and survive), but has not taken any of these. Churkin’s letter is perhaps one of the last warnings for Ukraine.

Came across another discussion on revisionism in terms of erasing memories and inculcating new ones - new street signs are being erected (which was mentioned previously).

75 years after a little-known massacre, another memorial in Eastern Europe is erected to obfuscate the history of World War II

Olevsk, a sleepy if ancient town deep in the backwoods of Ukraine, became part of my life in 2003 when I came across a dozen testimonies about vicious pogroms there at the beginning of the German-Soviet war of 1941 to 1945. In the testimonies, survivors and witnesses describe how Jews were beaten, humiliated, and mutilated in the center of town in the summer of 1941. Many of their tormentors and killers were members of the Poliska Sich, a guerrilla force led by one of the most famous Ukrainian nationalist leaders during the war, Taras “Bulba”-Borovets. Taking his nom de guerre from a mythical Cossack leader, Bulba-Borovets ruled Olevsk and its environs during the early months of the German-Soviet war, while Germans were thin on the ground in this remote location. It was only after the pogrom violence and further abuse of Jews at the hands of the Sich that the Germans took over Olevsk in September 1941 and established a ghetto. The Sich then patrolled the ghetto and later provided the Germans with manpower to liquidate the Jewish population.

Discovering these documents, I felt certain that such brutal pogroms must have been included in the literature on anti-Jewish violence in western Ukraine and eastern Poland in the summer of 1941. Following Jan Gross’s powerful 2000 book, Neighbors, other historians tackled the difficult questions surrounding local participation in the Holocaust, and in particular pogroms in that fateful summer. Yet I soon realized that there was no mention of the pogroms in the scholarly literature. Bulba-Borovets, unsurprisingly, failed to mention them in his memoirs.

[...]

We traveled in one of the only taxis in town to a mass grave outside Olevsk. Driving along the unpaved road to the village of Varvarivka, I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that this was the same road on which Olevsk’s Jews had been taken to their deaths. In Varvarivka, on Nov. 15, 1941 (some sources say Nov. 20), the Germans and the Poliska Sich shot the entire Jewish population—more than 500 men, women and children. Between bumps and bursts of speed, I tried to envision the final moments of an entire community as they took their last steps. We arrived at the destination—a clearing among the trees on the side of the road. There was a small black memorial enclosed in a fence and a small crumbling white wall surrounded by weeds overtaking the cracking cement. According to this late Soviet-era memorial, “German-fascist invaders” killed “peaceful citizens” at this spot in 1941. There was no reference to the Jewish identity of the victims.

{left out some horrendous descriptions}[...]

Together, we entered the nursery yard. I looked down at the dirt, once a scene of horrific violence. I then noticed a golden plaque in honor of Taras Bulba-Borovets and his men on the wall of the nursery building. The Sich headquarters were located at this place during the first few months of the war—when the pogroms occurred—and a local chapter of the right-wing nationalist Svoboda party had wanted to honor the Sich. Certainly, leaders of anti-Jewish violence and ethnic cleansing of Poles have been memorialized in other towns and cities in Ukraine. But rarely is the irony of commemorating a perpetrator as striking as when it is done at the scene of his crime.

[...]

Twice more, in 2011 and 2012, I visited Olevsk, always helped by the younger Misha. The golden plaque honoring the Sich at the site of their pogroms was eventually removed as a result of local political upheaval. But in its stead, a new monument was built just down the road from where the pogroms took place. Also a pet project of Svoboda, it was unveiled in August 2011 with party leader Oleh Tyahnybok in attendance. The unveiling sparked some heated debate in the local paper over the place of the Sich in Olevsk’s history—but no discussion of the pogroms in which the town’s Jews were killed.

[...]

The memory of Bulba-Borovets and his Sich has figured prominently in Olevsk and regional politics over the past five years. In the city of Rivne there are plans to build a new monument for Bulba-Borovets—commander of the Sich, not to mention this summer’s bike race named after the Sich. Olevsk itself has more plans, including: naming a park after the Olevsk Republic or Bulba-Borovets; naming a square after Bulba-Borovets; and creating an exposition about the Sich in a local museum (with plans to build a separate museum in the future). There have celebrations of the Sich throughout the Volhynia region this summer. Moreover, the Sich force has caught the interest of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. This past April it passed a resolution to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Poliska Sich.

This development on the national stage should come as no surprise to anyone following the Poroshenko government’s divisive policies on historical memory. The driving force of this policy of whitewashing nationalist activities during the war is the Institute of National Memory led by nationalist activist Volodymyr Viatrovych who believes the OUN-UPA only saved Jews during the war and did not participate in any pogroms. These ideas are being realized quickly: a monument to pogrom leaders has been unveiled in Uman; a Ukrainian nationalist pogrom leader—and importantly, decorated Wehrmacht soldier who aided the Germans in suppressing the Warsaw uprising—Petro Diachenko, was celebrated by the Rada last year; and the Kyiv city government just voted to name a street after far right-wing nationalist leader, Stepan Bandera, to name a few initiatives. “Decommunization” and the invocation of Western or European values serve as cover for this nationalist memory manipulation.

There has been too little debate about these policies in Ukraine. Ironically, many Ukrainians might believe that Bulba-Borovets and his Sich offer a safe choice for memorialization because they are traditionally considered less radical than competing nationalists. But they would be wrong. The Jews of Olevsk, tortured and tormented throughout the summer of 1941, and eventually shot by the Germans and the Sich together, deserve to have their voices heard before new monuments are raised in honor of those who killed them. If the Ukrainian government is so keen on building new memorials, I would suggest one at the Ubort river that lists the names of the murdered, why they were killed, and by whom.

Just notice this on the SoTT page: Savchenko touched by sanity? Says 'Ukrainians should apologize to the residents of Donbass', 'amnesty given to both sides' - very interesting, will have to keep evaluating Savchenko and what's going on here.

Comment: It was only two months ago that Nadzhda Savchenko appeared, by all objective reason, to be so virulently 'pro-Kiev' so as to seem out of her mind. So why say these very conciliatory and peace-based statements now? Has she been touched by an angel? Religious conversion? Taken her new-found responsibility as the People's Deputy to heart and seen the light of reason? Or is this some kind of elaborate con?

Well, maybe she ate something wrong? Comrades it will correct, that proposal has matured.
Poroshenko proposed to revoke Savchenko the title of Hero of Ukraine to check her health.
The petition to deny the title of Hero of Ukraine, people's Deputy Nadezhda Savchenko was on the website Poroshenko.
"We demand to deprive her of the honorary title of hero of Ukraine. To conduct a survey of her health with a mandatory rehabilitation, which is always held after the liberation of man from captivity", — said in the text of the document, which the authors propose to create a Commission of the Ministry of defence to investigate the circumstances of how Savchenko ended up in captivity.
Also, the petition proposes to cancel the city Council decision on granting a mother's "heroines" of the land plot in Kiev.
To date, the petition appeared on the website of the Ukrainian President on July 22, received over a thousand votes in the 25 Grand needed for consideration.

And in a pinch... Gongadze, Buzina, Sheremet and many other less known showed us what happens in extreme cases. :phaser:

Could be a political move. She gave an interview to "Deutsche Welle (here's the article in Russian), where she said that she "doesn't want to, but may not have the choice, but to become the next president). So it is quite possible that all her next moves will be orchestrated and organized by her new bosses (which could be the "old bosses" that decided to ditch Poroshenko).

Quite possible indeed. A number of analysts suggest that she has joined the opposition camp led by Timoshenko, here is the article in Russian.

There seems a mad rush in the Ukraine to hand out nationalistic 'titles', change street signs, monuments and open arms to NATO. Sadly, it is all for mental preparation, even if not for the current generation.

Yes, that sounds very possible. I remember comments made concerning the two Savchenko/Timoshenko, yet not sure where - it was not mentioned on SoTT that could be found while checking. It would make sense, based on some previous statements of Savchenko's, in order to adjust her new mask that would better suite her climb with a Timoshenko, especially if the winds of change are blowing against Poroshenko, and that may also be very possible.

People, why? What are you doing? Why?"

Everything is getting hotter in Ukraine. Alexander Turchynov is speaking of martial law. Pavel Sheremet was murdered in Kiev. The situation in Donbass has escalated. Meanwhile, Minister of Internal Affairs head Avakov has left on vacation. So has Kiev Mayor Klitchko. And not only them.

As sources in the Ukrainian Ministry of Transport have relayed to PolitNavigator, on July 22nd in the late evening, a private Golfstream 200 plane (tail number T7-PRM) with President Poroshenko on board departed Kiev International Airport for Malaga, Spain. As Ukrainian media have repeatedly written, Poroshenko has a villa near Malaga.

The president’s departure and his absence in the capital have not been publicized. The President, however, is even issuing instructions from his Spanish estate. On Monday, for example, he instructed the Prime Minister and Mayor of Kiev to strengthen security measures for public safety.

The question remains: why have Ukrainian leaders suddenly decided to leave Ukraine?
So far, there has been no answer.

Erdogan is remembering that Kiev is a friend of his enemy - so much for the mighty Ukrianian-Turkish allianc

The organization Fethullah Gülen (FETÖ), which the Turkish authorities accused of organizing a failed coup, continues its activities in Ukraine, according to the official Turkish news agency "Anadolu".
"The terrorist organization Fetullaha Gulen (FETÖ) continues its activities in Ukraine in the fields of education, culture, and mass media. It began its operations in the country after the collapse of the USSR and has created a network of "soft power"structures in recent years.”

Since 2001, the terrorist organization has operated in Ukraine as the “Meridian International School” in Kiev, including a primary school. There is also a branch office in Odessa." – the report says.

Agency journalists believe that the participation of the above-mentioned organizations in the cultural and educational life of Ukraine proves the Ukrainian authorities’ loyalty to the Turkish plotters.

Clearly, this is just an excuse to end the alliance with Kiev (Ankara will not quarrel with it but will step aside to please Moscow). It’s clear that apologies will not be accepted, and this is not about a few schools. The decision has been made, and is not subject to appeal, the pretext having been found.

Popov: NATO-UAF exercises and equipment tests hint at an offensive
http://www.fort-russ.com/2016/07/popov-nato-uaf-exercises-and-equipment.html

Large-scale military exercises with the participation of NATO countries’ units are currently taking place in the South of Ukraine. On July 24th, the active phase of the “Sea Breeze 2016) Ukrainian-NATO joint naval exercises began in Odessa. The maneuvers involve more than 20 ships and around 150 units of automotive and armored vehicles, aircraft, and 4,000 servicemen. Besides purely military tasks, the alliance’s actions are politically motivated, hence the arrival of the US and UK ambassadors in Odessa. The Black Sea could eventually become the site of a NATO fleet.

From July 24th-29th, Ukrainian soldiers are holding complex staff exercises codenamed “South Wind 2016” in the “Wide Lawn” training arena in the Nikolaev region. The geographical location and nature of these exercises is cause for worry. They are being held near the waters and territory of Crimea. The militarization of the Crimean peninsula, which is akin to an unsinkable Russian aircraft carrier in the Black Sea, has been covered extensively in Ukrainian and Western media. In In August, a regiment of the newest C-400 “Trumph” rocket installations are to be stationed on the peninsula and replace the older C-300’s. But this is a necessary militarization, since Ukraine has never hid its aggressive plans to “return” Crimea.

NATO’s naval exercises are a demonstration of capability and intentions against Russian Crimea. The South Wind 2016 exercises are most likely linked with the other war theater of Donbass, where the number of shellings of the people’s republics’ territories has sharply increased to up to 600 per day in addition to the accumulation of equipment and manpower on the contact line, which is evidence of UAF preparation for an offensive. My sources in the occupied cities of Donbass report that a large part of military equipment and UAF soldiers are being withdrawn from residential areas and sent closer to the theater of hostilities. A new phase of the war has practically already begun (which in the First World War was called positional warfare), but has so far not taken on the character of an active offensive.

Earlier, President Poroshenko and other Ukrainian leaders announced that the UAF lacked ammunition. Secretary Turchynov of the National Security and Defense Council also announced the beginning of a program for militarizing Ukrainian industry according to which 800 plants will be refitted to focus on military manufacturing. The program is supposed to be completed by January 2017. Also, on July 25th, reports appeared that a Ukrainian soldier had been killed during exercises in the Wide Lawn arena, the cause of death being the detonation of old ammunition (1960 and 1975 models). I would suggest that the Ukrainian army is testing its old ammunition in anticipation of a large-scale offensive. Seeing as how Ukraine was a genuine warehouse of military equipment and ammunition during Soviet times, the UAF should not feel any lack of the latter. However, the use of such poses a dangerous risk for Ukrainian soldiers themselves.

Shortages in ammunition and old Soviet equipment have been partly offset by Ukraine’s allies, the Eastern European members of NATO, but even their reserves are limited especially considering that a quarter of a century has passed since the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and Eastern Bloc. According to some reports, Ukraine actively used aid from these countries in 2014 - early 2015 but spent more than a little (if not most) of these supplies. The supply of Western military equipment, the quality of which has been tested and “appreciated” by the Donbass militia, is also suffering its own drawbacks and shortages. First of all, Ukrainian soldiers have to be taught how to use such (hence the presence of NATO countries’ instructors in Ukraine and the holding of joint exercises). Secondly, such equipment is expensive, and, thirdly, their technical parameters are incompatible with the Soviet-made equipment used by the UAF. Yet another factor involved is the supply of lethal equipment from NATO countries (which was announced at the alliance's summit in Warsaw) which means complicity in armed conflict and contradicts the Minsk Agreements. Russia can always present this proof of the West’s involvement in the war against Donbass.

Thus, the military exercises at the Wide Lawn arena and the character of ammunition used in them suggest that the UAF is actively preparing for an offensive against the republics of Donbass. Meanwhile, the naval exercises in the Black Sea are in my opinion meant to create a military and political counterbalance to Russian Crimea and, perhaps, pro-Russian Transnistria.

The situation in eastern Ukraine remains volatile as Kiev-led forces have intensified the shelling of settlements in self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics, Russian envoy to Contact Group on Ukraine Boris Gryzlov said Wednesday.

The Trilateral Contact Group, consisting of envoys and experts from Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), is holding a regular meeting in Minsk aimed at facilitating a diplomatic resolution to the armed conflict in Donbas.

The Russian envoy stressed that security issues must not hamper the settlement of political aspects of peace process in eastern Ukraine.

"Otherwise, the settlement process will be largely influenced by those who do not wish peace for Donbas," Gryzlov said.

Ukraine’s refusal to pay off its $3 billion debt carries appropriate consequences for Kiev’s financial obligations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday, adding that Moscow reserves the legal right to respond with legal measures.

Ukraine’s Finance Minister Oleksandr Danilyuk outlined Kiev’s stance "that we shouldn’t return the money" in an interview with local television earlier in the day, citing the reasoning that "it was a political credit which we were forced to take."

Asked whether Moscow planned to change tactics in light of the new development, he said "Russia reserves the right to respond accordingly in the legal and international level in order to protect its sovereign commercial interests."

In Vino Veritas: Famous Crimean Wine to Appear on Chinese Store Shelves
http://sputniknews.com/russia/20160727/1043677718/russia-china-winery.html

The Massandra winery is one of the oldest areas of Russian winemaking and one of the main Crimean attractions. The company was established in 1894 by Prince Lev Golitsyn. Nowadays, it produces 80 types of dessert and table wines. Its unique enoteca, the collection of wine samples, owns about a million bottles and is listed in the Guinness World Records.

A true gem of the collection is Jerez de la Frontera harvest of 1775. One of the five bottles this wine stored in the Massandra's cellars was sold at Sotheby's in London for 50 thousand dollars. According to experts, such rare wine can cost up to 1 million euros these days.

China became the first far-abroad country to buy Crimean wine after the peninsula's reunification with Russia, Director General of the Massandra winery Yanina Pavlenko told Sputnik in an interview. Many companies and importers have shown interest in the wines of Massandra, however, deliveries in a number of countries are complicated by the US and EU sanctions against goods of Crimean origin.

An international human rights watchdog on Tuesday unveiled new evidence that Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) is running a secret detention center in the eastern city of Kharkiv.

New Details Emerge on SBU Secret Detention Center in Ukraine - Int'l Watchdog
http://sputniknews.com/europe/20160726/1043646817/detention-sbu-ukraine.html

On Thursday, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) published a report dubbed "They Do Exist," documenting the existence of secret detention facilities located within the territory of Ukraine. According to the report, civilians from the regions affected by the Ukrainian conflict have been detained in such facilities, including the one located in Kharkiv.

"Before publishing the report, we met with Ukraine’s presidential administration and military prosecutor. We shared our findings and told them we had grounds to believe that as many as 16 people may remain in secret detention at the compound [in Kharkiv]. They vehemently denied the allegation but pledged to investigate. This week, we received further information that corroborates our conclusion that at least as of June, those 16 people were still there — and indeed that another four had joined the group," HRW Russia Program Director Tanya Lokshina said.

During the most recent phone call that took place in June, Korolev told his family about 20 inmates being kept in the SBU facility, Lokshina added.
