"The Russian Foreign Ministry said it is working hard to provide all Russian citizenship by birth, including the citizens of the former Soviet Union and even the descendants of the subjects of the Russian Empire. This was said today, July 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the press-service agency.

Asked whether the birth in Russia is the basis for obtaining Russian citizenship, Lavrov said that while this is prevented by bureaucratic difficulties, but in the long term Russian citizenship will be granted even to the descendants of the subjects of the Russian Empire.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin supported us when we were in favor of that citizenship is granted by birth to all, including the descendants of the citizens of the former Soviet Union, no matter where they were born, including the descendants of the subjects of the Russian Empire. But at some point the bureaucrats in the State Duma is limited only to the birthplace of the former RSFSR. This is wrong, "he said.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia is trying to break down these barriers.

"Now we are fighting this and I think that finally will finish," - said Lavrov.

He also said that the people of Uzbekistan can obtain Russian citizenship "by the recently introduced to facilitate the procedure as carriers of the Russian language and Russian culture."

In April of last year in Russia came into force a law on a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship for Russian."

I have Russian citizenship due to Citizenship act of 1991. I know of several people who didn't got their Russian nationality back then when the USSR was dissolved. It seems that a new opportunity arises with the new policies.

FWIW!

Great news indeed!

I just noticed that Putin is also trying to extend to all BRICS members the possibility of going to Russia without a Visa (Brazil's and China's citizens already have this right). Great to know that Russia is opening opportunities like these!

Thanks Gaby, my friends and I have been saying lately we should move to russia, it's mostly been in jest but the more I think about it the more and more appealing it becomes.

If I knew then what I know now, and if I was 20 years younger, I'd be emigrating to Russia in a heartbeat.

Thanks Gaby Interesting indeed. My grandparents on my Mother's side were Germans from Russia who came to the US in the 1910's so were citizens of the Empire. Their families had been in Russia since the time of Catherine the Great.

Yes, Redrock12. If I were younger emigrating to Russia would definitely be worthy of consideration.

I have no connection to Russia besides affection. But this looks promising:

This looks promising too, as I am not far from 60:
