I have searched numerous English news agencies for this story, but so far have come up empty handed! It is being widely reported in Arabic. Here is a translation from al-wakeel news in Jordan.

Assassination Attempt of Bashar al-Assad During His Mother's Funeral

The funeral procession of Anisa Makhlouf, the mother of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, was targeted with grad missiles in the town of Qardaha.

Casualties were reported. Four people were killed, including a guard of President Assad. There was also a number of injuries.

The organization, Ahrar al-Sham, an opposition group of the Assad government, took credit for the bombing of the funeral procession.

Russian news agencies confirmed on Tuesday that Assad was present, but not hurt.

Wow--during his mother's funeral? The psychopaths of the west continue to reach new lows with their depravity.

I hope he's doing alright.

A real low blow, attacking his mother's funeral.

I found it a bit strange there were no pictures of this bombing and was starting to wonder if it was a planted story. But it is now hitting the english news wires. http://www.jpost.com/Middle-East/Report-Leading-Syrian-opposition-faction-struck-Bashar-Assads-mothers-funeral-444444

What cowards for trying to assassinate him during his mother's funeral.

According to reports, the funeral procession was shelled from mortars, during the funeral of Anisa Makhlouf.

Radio station Shems FM report that at least five mortar shells and grad rockets were fired in the direction of Assad’s motorcade in the district of Qardaha.

Several relatives have been reported as injured or killed.

Qardaha (Arabic: قرداحة‎ / ALA-LC: Qardāḥah) is a village in northwestern Syria, in the mountains overlooking the coastal town of Latakia.

Nearby localities include Kilmakho to the west, Bustan al-Basha to the southwest, Harf al-Musaytirah to the southeast and Muzayraa to the north.

According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Qardaha had a population of 8,671 in 2004. It has a predominantly Alawite population and is the traditional home of the Assad family.

Wow! They must be really growing desperate!

A few months ago they had absolute certainty that Al-Assad's destiny would be the same of Gadaffi, but now they're sensing a victory of the Syrian troops and must downgrade their dirty tricks to "completely F'ed up". When they're unable to kick you out subtly or to corrupt you, their last resort is a plain assassination in the light of day a la Kennedy.

From the link above, four others were killed by this Grad rocket (122 mm) attack while traveling in a convoy for his mothers funeral. What a heartless act.

Well I'm not sure either, how true that story is, since I haven't found any pictures or videos yet. Also the few articles that talk about it., all don't give a specific source and speak about "a opposition group has claimed". I looked at RT and Syputnik and they didn't report about it either, so I dunno how true it is...

If any of it should be true, it is interesting that almost nobody reports about it. As of now, I think it is a hoax, but if it should be true, maybe Assad was insured or something worst and russia/syria try to keep a lid on it, as of now, for stability reasons in syria?

I'm sorry to hear of this news, although it hasn't been fully validated yet. Unfortunately, just like President Putin - al Assad is a target.

I haven't come across any additional information but have discovered what looks like a Facebook page set up for President Bashar al-Assad with a last entry logged yesterday. Unfortunately, it's part English/Arabic.

P.S. - just did a quick search of Syrian News sites. There's no entries of any type of assassination attempt on al Assad?

Bashar al-Assad Death Hoax Dismissed Since Political figure Is ‘Alive And Well’
http://en.mediamass.net/people/bashar-al-assad/deathhoax.html

News of political figure Bashar al-Assad’s death spread quickly earlier this week causing concern among fans across the world. However the February 2016 report has now been confirmed as a complete hoax and just the latest in a string of fake celebrity death reports. Thankfully, the Syrian president is alive and well.

I couldn't find anything on it on PressTV either. If true, it indeed shows just how evil these Western-backed groups are.

Just to note that it wouldn't be the first time newswire carried someting false - i think it was the source of some spurious Putin quote as well as something random about the Pope, i can't remember the rumour but i checked both out and both led straight back to newswire, so i'd be cautious - fwiw.

I also heard the same report but on X22 - but doing a quick search the most mainstream source i can see HAARETZ and they're just detailing the funeral.
