A view from the back of the church, near the doorway, toward the front. We see our researchers being quite amazed at how small the place is. And for so small a church, it was most definitely "decorated." One might even think that the "fancy" decorations made Sauniere very popular among the villagers who could be very proud of their tiny church. There is no doubt that some considerable funds went into decorations, but certainly not the extraordinary amounts of money that some people have claimed. Whatever Sauniere was doing to make money, he was using it to improve the environment of his parishioners which undeoubtedly made him popular. |
