Asma al-Assad – the beautiful face of the Syrian dictatorship | DW Documentary

Published on Oct 5, 2017
Asma al-Assad, the First Lady of Syria and wife of president Bashar al-Assad, was initially a beacon of hope. Today, she is regarded as the dictator’s accomplice.
She grew up in London, went to elite schools and had a promising career. The former ambassador of the European Union to Syria, Frank Hesske, still gets a sparkle in his eyes when he talks about Asma al-Assad.

She was ‘a darling’, and comparable to Princess Diana - and not just because of her British roots: ‘We diplomats,’ the former ambassador now reveals with surprising honesty, ‘let ourselves be seduced’. Many of the diplomats, politicians and journalists from the West who met the presidential couple during the 11 years after Assad took power and before the civil war broke out shared that fate: they let themselves be duped.

Torture, arrests and threats were unleashed on all those who got in the way of the regime - just as under Assad’s father. There’s the famous opposition activist Riad Seif, whose daughter talks about the regime’s humiliations and the constant fear that her family could be taken by the secret police and her father killed. While the country remains as dark as ever, this film looks at Asma al-Assad’s international role as the face of the dictatorship, the woman from London who for a long time managed to make the Assads socially acceptable.

The Syrian intelligence forces detained a US spy in Damascus, media sources reported on Thursday.

US Spy Arrested in Damascus

According to the Arabic-language al-Hadath news, the Syrian security apparatus arrested a US spy who had taken images and recorded footage of several military points near Damascus in disguise as a journalist and with a fake ID card. They also seized a number of weapons, cameras and computers during the arrest.

The spy who is originally a Syrian Arab confessed that he was hired via social media networks with a monthly salary of $20,000 and provided the US authorities with the demanded images and intelligence.

He also confessed to cooperation with certain terrorist groups in Ghouta of Damascus.

Russian and Arab media sources reported in June that the Russian anti-aircraft missile units have targeted a US reconnaissance plane over Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Social media activists in Tartus port city reported that the Russian anti-aircraft missile units opened fire at a US spying plane in the Mediterranean Sea.

As the Russian missile units started anti-air operation, unconfirmed reports said that the Russian missiles targeted a RQ 4 Global Hawk drone of the US army.

The Mirnov'vestiyeh daily reported that the US possibly planned to gather intel on the Russian anti-aircraft system in Tartus port and Humeimim base by using RQ 4 Global Hawk drone that is an expensive spying plan.

The terrorist group's missile units shelled two villages in the Southwestern territories of Damascus province on Friday, killing a civilian and wounding several more.

One civilian was killed and several more were wounded after the villages of Darbal and Hineh in Southwestern Damascus came under heavy missile attacks by the terrorist groups.

Militant-affiliated news websites reported last month that the Syrian Army forwarded a long convoy of armored vehicles and tanks along with a large number of fresh soldiers to the last bastion of the terrorists in the Western part of Damascus province.

The websites reported that the army sent 21 tanks, 16 BMP armored vehicles and tens of military vehicles along with a large number of forces to areas surrounding the militant-held town of Beit Jinn in Western Damascus.

Beit Jinn has been considered as the last stronghold of the terrorists in the Western part of Damascus province after their comrades in Darayya endorsed a peace agreement with the army last year.

The Syrian Armed Forces resumed their offensive in the Beit Jinn pocket of the Golan Heights, scoring a new advance after a tough battle with the terrorists in the region.

The army’s 90th Brigade, backed up by Fouj Al-Joulan and Liwa Suqour Al-Sahra, attacked the tall hilltop of Tal Dhib’at, where they were confronted by a large force comprised of Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board).

Within hours of launching the attack, the army soldiers and their allies managed to capture Tal Dhib’at, forcing the terrorists to withdraw towards another part of the Beit Jinn Farms.

Since the militants refused to accept a reconciliation deal in this part of the Golan Heights, the Beit Jinn pocket remains absent from any de-escalation agreement.

As long as the so-called rebels refuse to end hostilities in this area, the Syrian army will continue their field operations until the former reconsiders their decision.

According to the Arabic-language website of Sputnik, the PANTSIR-S system has smashed 2 ISIL Grad missiles before hitting the targets.

PANTSIR-S1 (NATO reporting name SA-22 Greyhound) is a combined short to medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system produced by KBP of Tula, Russia.

The system is a further development of 2K22 Tunguska (NATO reporting name: SA-19/SA-N-11) and represents the latest air defense technology by using phased array radars for both target acquisition and tracking.

The PANTSIR-S1 was designed to provide point air defense of military/industrial/administrative installations against aircraft, helicopters, precision munitions, cruise missiles and UAVs and to provide additional protection to air defense units from enemy air attacks employing precision munitions, specially at the low to extremely low ranges.

The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said that refugees living in the Rukban desert camp in Southeast Syria are being used by the United States to shield its military base near the town of al-Tanf.

Russia: US Uses Rukban Refugees as Shield for al-Tanf Base in South Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960714000359

"Rukban refugees are de facto hostages, effectively a ‘human shield’ for the US base. Think about it, other than by Americans such 'protection' barriers are used in Syria only by those who they came here to fight, the terrorists," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement, Sputnik reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry also added that the US base in Syria’s Southeastern al-Tanf area has turned this strip of the border with Jordan into a black hole generating waves of insurgency.

The Pentagon has claimed the base is used by US, UK and Norwegian instructors to train Free Syrian Army militants, Konashenkov said in a statement, adding the outpost was protected by tactical aviation and HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems.

"In reality, al-Tanf has turned into a 100-kilometer ‘black hole’ on the Syrian-Jordanian state border. And, instead of the Free Syrian Army, it is spewing ISIL mobile groups who make inroads to launch subversive terrorist operations against Syrian troops and civilians," he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman also questioned the claim by the United States that its base near al-Tanf was used for attacks on terrorists.

"The illegal establishment of the US military base on the Syrian-Jordanian border in April 2017 was publicly justified by the ‘need to conduct counter-ISIL [Daesh] operations.’ But we know of no US operation that was launched against the ISIL in the past six months of its existence," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

The US-led coalition said in June it would not leave the al-Tanf garrison until the Daesh terror group was defeated. But last Wednesday Konashenkov accused the coalition of supporting Daesh instead. The base has twice been used to strike Syrian-government aligned forces fighting terrorists.

The Arabic-language website of Russia's state news agency, Sputnik, released photos of TOS-1A rocket launchers, and quoted military experts as saying that the modern rocket launchers have recently been sent to the battlefield.

The Arabic Sputnik added that TOS-1A has been used in the most important military operations by the army troops.

The rocket launcher is mounted on a vehicle with 44.3 tons of weight and 3 crews, the website said, adding that the vehicles can move at an ultimate speed of 60 km/h. The maximum fire range of TOS-1A is 6,000 meters.

The ISIL terrorist group has transferred its commanders from the town of al-Mayadeen to another town in the Southeastern part of Deir Ezzur province as the terrorist front is collapsing in al-Mayadeen, local sources reported on Saturday.

ISIL Evacuates Own Commanders from Al-Mayadeen amid Syrian Army's Rapid Advances

The sources said that ISIL has dispatched its commanders from al-Mayadeen to Albu Kamal. In the meantime, the ISIL has forwarded its gunmen, deployed in Badiyeh (desert) and Eastern Deir Ezzur, to al-Mayadeen as the army soldiers are advancing rapidly in the region.

Relevant reports said on Friday that the army men, deployed in al-Thardah mountain, stormed ISIL's positons and pushed the gunmen back from a number of positions along the Deir Ezzur- al-Mayadeen road.

In the meantime, the Syrian Air Force and the army's missile units pounded ISIL's movements in the region, inflicting major losses on the terrorists.

The 100km area around the US Al-Tanf base near the Syrian-Jordanian border has become a “black hole” which ISIS terrorists use to carry out attacks against Syrian troops and civilians, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

ISIS carries out attacks from US-controlled ‘black-hole’ area near Al-Tanf base – Russian MoD
https://www.rt.com/news/405844-isis-attacks-syria-tanf/

The base, set up by the US in April 2017 near the border town of Al-Tanf, is becoming a problem for Syrian troops combatting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists in Deir ez-Zor province, the statement says.

“Unlawful establishment by the US of this military base on Syria-Jordan border in April this year has been publicly justified by ‘the need to conduct operations against IS,’” the statement reads.

However, “there were no reports of a single American operation against Islamic State during the six months of its existence,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“Though the Pentagon repeatedly claimed that the base is used to train the so-called ‘New Syrian Army’ by the coalition instructors from the US, the UK and Norway,” it has become “a 100-kilometer black hole” on the Syria-Jordan border, the statement added.

The ministry also accused the US of not letting humanitarian convoys through the area to reach the Rukban refugee camp, which is located close to the base. The camp is reportedly hosting around 60,000 women and children from Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. The refugees in Rukban serve as a “human shield” for the American base, the ministry’s spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, said.

In a statement, the Pentagon dismissed any claims that the US had any agenda in Syria other than to fight IS as “ridiculous.”

The Turkish president has announced plans to start a new military operation in Syria in a move which has been rumored for weeks.

Next Stop Idlib: Erdogan Announces Turkey's New 'Serious' Operation in Syria
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201710071058033127-erdogan-idlib-syria-new-operation/

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced plans to deploy the country's soldiers to Syria's Idlib, where the Free Syrian Army rebel fighters backed by Ankara have launched an operation.

We intend to further enhance our steps in providing safety to Idlib now. There is a serious operation in Idlib today and it is going to continue," Erdogan said as quoted by Anadolu news agency, adding that the "Turkish soldiers are not there yet."

He also vowed support for "our brothers in Idlib," who left Aleppo for Idlib, apparently referring to militants who left the city freed by the Syrian army in December 2016 as a result of an agreement backed by Russia.

Currently, Idlib is mostly controlled by Tahrir al-Sham, a militant group led by al-Nusra Front terrorist group (banned in Russia), al-Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate. The group is not party to the agreement on setting up a de-escalation zone in Idlib agreed upon during the Syrian peace talks in Astana brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey.

"We will never allow a terror corridor along our Syria border," the Turkish president said. "We will continue to take other initiatives after the Idlib operation," he added.

Erdogan also said that Russia has agreed to provide air support to the operation, however, there has been no official comment by the Russian Defense Ministry yet supporting the claim. Nevertheless, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier this week that Russia is ready to support armed groups fighting al-Nusra Front in Syria's Idlib de-escalation zone.

"Turkey will be providing protection inside Idlib while the security beyond the borders of Idlib will be provided by Russia," he said.

Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Temir Dzhumakadyrov has died in a car accident. Preliminary reports suggest that Dzhumakadyrov’s car was hit by a truck.

Kyrgyzstan Deputy Prime Minister Dies in Car Crash - Spokesman
https://sputniknews.com/asia/201710071058026329-kyrgyzstan-temir-dzhumakadyrov-car-accident-death/

Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Temir Dzhumakadyrov died in a car accident on a road near the capital of Bishkek on Saturday, government spokesman Chingiz Esengul told Sputnik.

"A road accident involving a Toyota Land Cruiser occurred at around 7:30 a.m. near the village of Sadovoye in the [Kyrgyz] Moscow district," the spokesman said.

"Deputy Prime Minister Temir Dzhumakadyrov, his aide Nurlan Dzhamgyrchiev and the driver were inside the car, all in the car were killed," he added.

The 40-year-old, who has been serving as deputy prime minister since last August, was on his way to the southwestern Talas region to oversee preparations for the October 15 presidential election. Some 19 miles from Bishkek, his car collided head-on with a truck that is believed to have veered into the opposite lane.

John Kiriakou, a prominent ex-CIA officer who was among the first to reveal the agency’s torture program, was seriously injured in a scooter accident earlier this week in Washington, D.C.

John Kiriakou, CIA Officer in Torture Leak Case, Injured in Serious Traffic Accident 10/6/17
http://www.newsweek.com/cia-torture-john-kiriakou-traffic-accident-al-qaeda-leaks-679854

Kiriakou says he suffered six broken ribs, a broken clavicle and a fractured vertebrae in an accident Tuesday night en route to a bookstore in northwest D.C. "I had a port installed in my neck and a second port installed in my back to take targeted painkillers,” he wrote on his Facebook page. "Thank God I was wearing a helmet.”

Kiriakou was charged in 2012 with leaking classified information about the CIA waterboarding of an Al-Qaeda suspect at a secret site in Thailand. He eventually pleaded guilty to one count of leaking the identity of a fellow CIA officer to a reporter and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

“It was a serious accident, but hopefully he’ll be released on Sunday,” Jesselyn Radack, one of his attorneys, tells Newsweek. She said Kiriakou was driving his Vespa in northwest Washington Tuesday night when a car stopped suddenly in front of him. He plowed into the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to George Washington University Hospital, Radack says.

"Life can change in a second,” Kiriakou wrote on his Facebook page.

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department initially said it had no record of the incident and referred inquiries to the U.S. Park Police, which also patrols the area. But on Saturday it found an incident report of the crash, which it said was caused by a vehicle braking “for a bus pulling out of the lane of travel.”

Kiriakou believes the incident may not have been an accident, according to a friend, New York attorney Rahul Manchanda, who said he spoke with the former CIA man. “He said it was suspicious,” the lawyer says, because the car in front of him stopped without warning. But Radack, also a close friend of Kiriakou’s, said that although he had made “many enemies over the years,” he had not raised any suspicions about the accident with her.

Kiriakou was scheduled to speak Saturday at the Rockport, Massachusetts, public library about his recent prison memoir, Doing Time Like a Spy. “The author’s visit has been postponed until further notice, as he sustained serious injuries in a recent motorcycle accident,” the nearby Gloucester Times newspaper reported on October 4.

The Syrian armed forces and its allies reportedly encircled Daesh militants in the city of Al Mayadin in Eastern Syria.

The operation of Syrian army aimed at encircling Daesh militants in Syria's south-eastern city of Al Mayadin is underway, a source known with the situation on the ground told Sputnik on Sunday.

"The assault troops (of Syrian army) are clearing areas in the western outskirts of Al Mayadin," the source said.

The day before, Russia's Defense Ministry had reported the elimination of Daesh command position in the Al Mayadin district, saying that about 80 militants were killed during the raid, including important Daesh commanders.

A member of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament has commented on the "landmark" visit by the Saudi King to Russia and its impact on Riyadh-Washington relations.

Russian Senator Believes Saudi King's Visit to Russia Means 'US Dictate Over'
https://sputniknews.com/russia/201710081058047668-russia-visit-saudi-king-us/

Russian Senator Alexey Pushkov argued on Sunday that the visit of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud indicated the end of US dominance in international relations. "Riyadh will cooperate with Moscow despite the hardline US approach to Russia. There is an important sign: The United States is still influential, but its dictate is over," Pushkov said on Twitter.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's delegation led by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud arrived in Moscow for a four-day state visit. It was the first ever visit of a reigning Saudi monarch to Russia.

A day after the Turkish president announced a new military operation in Syria's Idlib, he again lashed out at the West over its alleged "support" of terrorist groups.

'West's Shadow' Behind All Terrorist Groups, Including Daesh - Erdogan
https://sputniknews.com/world/201710081058051500-erdogan-terrorists-west-support/

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the "West's shadow" is behind terrorist groups, including Daesh and al-Qaeda. He yet again accused the US-backed Syrian Kurds, Ankara believes to be linked to the PKK (outlawed in Turkey), of attempts to create a "terrorist corridor from Afrin to the Mediterranean" on the border with Turkey and vowed to defend his country's security.

"Islamic State [Daesh, ISIS, banned in Russia], al-Qaeda, PKK — behind all these organizations you will see the shadow of the West. All of them find refuge in the West. Where is FETO? Also in the West. They receive very serious financial support," President Erdogan said as quoted by RIA Novosti on Sunday, speaking to activists of the ruling Justice and Development Party.

Commenting on the upcoming military operation by the Turkish army to support Free Syrian Army rebels' fight against al-Nusra Front in Idlib, Erdogan said that the situation on the border with Syria is a threat to Ankara and "if we didn't take our measures, bombs would fall on our cities," referring to a deal on the creation of a de-escalation zone in the area brokered by Moscow, Tehran and Ankara.

"Our efforts in Idlib are going on, in cooperation with the Free Syrian Army, without problems at the moment," he said, adding that Ankara's actions are in line with decisions made at the last round of the Astana talks on the Syrian settlement backed by Russia, Iran and Turkey.

He said that the operation in Idlib continues the previous Turkish operation in Syria (August 2016 — March 2017) conducted also with the FSA rebel fighters dubbed the "Euphrates Shield," which was aimed to clear the Syrian border town of Jarablus and the surrounding area from Daesh terrorist group.

Currently, Idlib is mostly controlled by Tahrir al-Sham, a militant group led by al-Nusra Front terrorist group (banned in Russia), al-Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate. The group is not party to the agreement on setting up a de-escalation zone in Idlib agreed upon during the Syrian peace talks in Astana.

Earlier in the day, the Turkish foreign minister also commented on the situation in Idlib by saying, "We reached an agreement in Astana. Why? We want to prevent conflict in these areas. That is to say de-conflict zone." The country's prime minister, Binali Yildirim, in his turn, said that Ankara's actions in Idlib are coordinated with Moscow.

The army soldiers engaged in fierce clashes with the ISIL and imposed control over more areas near the village of Hatlah Fowqani.

A field source said that if the army men capture the villages of Hatlah Fowqani and Hatlah Tahtani, the only supply line of the ISIL to al-Siasiyeh bridge that connects Huweija Sakar region to the Northern outskirts of Deir Ezzur city will be cut off and the Northern districts of the city will fall to government forces.

The ISIL's terrorist front is collapsing and the militants are accusing each other of betrayal after the rapid advances of the army units in the region.

The US is competing with Russia in the last stage of war in Syria in a bid to avoid losing all its cards and rather extend its influence in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country to have a share of its natural wealth.

Arab Media: US Competing with Russia for Economic Interests in Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960716001185

According to the Arabic-language Lebanese al-Nashrah news website, the US is increasing its military aid to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to further advance in the Northern and Eastern parts of Syria.

In the view of the Americans, Syria shouldn’t be left for the Russians without the US share of influence in the country and Washington should find its share in the economic projects in the war-torn country, it added.

According to the Arab website, the American forces are deployed in many regions in Syria which is not limited to the al-Tanf border crossing and support and supervise the SDF forces in the anti-ISIL fight to establish a foothold in more areas in Syria.

Meantime, the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said on Friday that refugees living in the Rukban desert camp in Southeast Syria are being used by the United States to shield its military base near the town of al-Tanf.

The Friday afternoon incident involved a military vehicle and a troop formation, according to garrison public affairs officer Pat Jones, who said the injured soldiers were immediately evacuated to an off-post hospital.

The incident occurred in the training areas of Fort Jackson, rather than the public areas, according to public affairs officer Mike Pond.

A military vehicle struck the soldiers while they were in formation, according to The Associated Press. No details were given about the type of vehicle involved.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by Fort Jackson officials, said Jones, adding if there was criminal activity or intent to harm that will be determined by the investigation.

The former chief of staff at Fort Jackson said he has been told the incident was an accident.

“There’s no indication at this point that it’s anything other than an accident,” said Dan Beatty, now chairman for the Military Affairs Committee with the Columbia Chamber. “I’ve been working very closely with officials at Fort Jackson and they are taking the appropriate steps and doing outreach. Their priority is taking care of the injured soldiers and the fallen.

“They are reaching out to their families and have launched an investigation.” The names of the soldiers who died won’t be released until their families are notified.

Army officials on Saturday identified the soldiers who were involved in Friday’s deadly incident at Fort Jackson in Columbia involving a military vehicle and a troop formation that killed two soldiers and injured six others.

They are: Pvt. Ethan Shrader, from Prospect, TN., and Pvt. Timothy Ashcraft, from Cincinnati, OH.

The Injured were: Pvt. Emmett Foreman, from Daleville, AL; Pvt. Hannah New, Cartersville, GA; Pvt. Benjamin Key, Livingston, TN: Pvt. Alan Kryszak, Clarksville, TN; Pvt. Cardre Jackson Jr., Laurel, MD; and Pvt. James Foster, Macon, GA.

The Army, which called the incident “a tragic accident,” has been sketchy on details.

So far, the military has not disclosed whether the driver of the vehicle will face charges, whether there was negligence on the part of anyone, whether the incident has been officially labelled an accident, what time of day the incident happened and whether the vehicle and soldiers were on or off roads. Neither was the location of the incident made public nor the type of vehicle. Neither is it clear whether the soldiers were struck from behind, or in front, or they were not moving at the time.

The fact that the dead and injured soldiers were all privates indicates they may have been part of a basic, or beginning, training program. The Army did say that the dead and injured were a “troop formation.” Such formations are usually under the direct supervision of one or more sergeants.

Newly leaked footage from the village shows a group of blindfolded non-combatants sitting detained in the back of a vehicle, pleading for mercy with armed members of the Syrian Al-Qaeda group:

Despite the looming massacre, the fall of Abu Dali is yet to spark any outrage from the international community.

Abu Dali has long served as a trading point between the warring parties; therefore, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and National Defence Forces (NDF) were caught completely off-guard by the surprise HTS offensive that targeted a long-standing government salient in the southeastern countryside of Idlib.

Meanwhile, the Russian Air Force is increasing its sorties against HTS across Idlib with dozens of airstrikes targeting jihadist insurgents in Abu Dali as well.

He told Arabic Sputnik that the weapons had been smuggled into Syria from outside the country, adding that over 100 weapons and hand grenades made in the US, Belgium and France were seized by the army.

Relevant reports said in March that the army troops discovered several ISIL hideouts stashed with a large volume of US-manufactured weapons and ammunition in the Northern province of Aleppo.

A Russian center for coordinated cooperation in Russian language teaching has just opened up in the Syrian capital city of Damascus.

New Russian language center for teaching coordination opens up at Damascus University due to high popular demand
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/10/new-russian-language-center-for.html

The center will operate as part of the International and Cultural Relations Department of Damascus University.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Syrian Minister of Higher Education, Atef Naddaf, who highlighted the importance of the center in terms of boosting the teaching of a Russian language, a thing that would strengthen the ties between the two nations, especially since the Russian language is now included in the curriculum of the Syrian schools.

“This of course requires properly-qualified cadres who will be able to teach the Russian language with high-level proficiency”, Naddaf said.

For her part, the head of the Russian language center, Svetlana Rodygina, explained that one of the reasons for establishing a new center was an increased demand of learning the Russian language among the Syrians, meaning a highly skilled cadre is required for proper teaching.

She noted that center will offer the process of learning the Russian language through coordinated cooperation between the Syrian and Russian universities, particularly Synergy University (Moscow University for Industry and Finance) which will also provide all relevant books and references to the Russian Language Department at Damascus University.

In his press statement, the Syrian Minister of Education Hazwan Al Wazz noted that there are currently 170 schools in Syria that teach Russian as a second foreign language, available to at least 15,000 students.

Russia and Saudi Arabia: more tactics than partnership

Saudi Arabia and Russia: tactics, not partnership
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/10/saudi-arabia-and-russia-tactics-not.html

Russia and Saudi Arabia are holding talks. The Russians are primarily concerned to dissuade the Saudis from exporting Islamic mercenaries.

The first visit of a Saudi king to Moscow has been interpreted differently by international observers: US President Donald Trump's opponents see the supposed rapprochement between Russia and Saudi Arabia as a direct result of an American loss of influence in the Middle East. This was due to Trumps' inner-political difficulties - which, however, were instigated ironically by precisely those forces that now accuse Trump of incapacity for action.

King Salman is the first Saudi Arabian monarch to visit Russia. On his caravan route from the airport of Vnukovo to the city center of Moscow late Wednesday evening, he was welcomed by his own portrait on posters with welcoming signs in Russian and Arabic. President Vladimir Putin received him on Thursday in the gold-decorated Andreas Hall of the Kremlin. After the meeting, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Djubeir spoke of a "historical moment" in the joint relations.

Russia, however, mainly had to pursue one goal in greeting King Salman this week with such unusual bombast: The Russians want to end the war in Syria. They are in the strongest military position. But the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is already thinking past the war. Even if the Russians are now militarily beating the Islamic mercenaries financed by the Saudis in Syria, Moscow does not have any guarantee that the Saudis and others will not export and deploy the model elsewhere. The developments in Myanmar are a clear warning to the Russians.

Putin and Trump, on the other hand, are pulling together in the same direction: Trump in Riyadh demanded that all the Gulf States break away from terrorism and also from financing the CIA-led mercenary units.

For Russia, it is important to win over the Saudis, too for a political solution after the end of the war: TASS quotes from the statement of King Salman, which lets it be known that the Saudis are no longer fundamentally opposed to the Russian proposals: "There has to be a political solution that guarantees the security, stability and territorial integrity of Syria," King Salman said. If the Saudis actually officially recognize the territorial integrity of Syria, that would be a great success for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Saudis, on the other hand, are pursuing the tactics of curbing Iranian influence in Syria. The Israelis have already tried this. Both of them know that Russia is the most important guarantor-power in Syria, and that it concludes individual agreements, with which, for instance, they put limits on Iran as Asaad Hanna writes at Chatham House.*

In order to prevent Saudis in the long term from sending Islamic mercenaries into regions critical for Russia, Moscow wants to cooperate with Saudi Arabia in the field of energy and armaments. Interestingly, both the Russian state portal Sputnik and the US-funded Moscow Times conclude that economic deals have long been talked about, but the Saudis have never gone beyond non-binding declarations of intent.

This applies especially to armor. According to Reuters, on Thursday billions and billions of dealings were announced, including the purchase of a Russian air defense system and missiles. The Moscow Times writes that in 2015 Riyadh had already made an investment of 10 billion dollars in Russia. But not a single binding contract followed the declaration. Already last year, the head of the Russian armaments company Rosoboronexport had said that the Saudis had conducted talks on weapons for political and tactical reasons, without contracts being concluded.

Saudi Arabia announced, among other things, an intention to purchase the Russian air defense system S-400. The state-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries (Sami) also talked of an agreement with the Russian armor company Rosoboronexport on purchases of the anti-tank rocket "Kornet", of rocket launchers of the type TOS-1A and other systems. In a statement of intent, it was stated that Russia could help the kingdom build its own armaments industry.

However, Saudi Arabia traditionally buys most of its weapons from American and British manufacturers. President Trump had agreed on a billions of armor packages with the Kingdom on his first trip abroad in May - which raises the question why the Saudis would be buying weapons from the Russians on a grand scale.

Sputnik comments, "Saudi Arabia has been a not-so-reliable partner in the past when it comes to weapon exports. For example, Riyadh had already talked about gun purchases in Russia worth tens of billions of dollars, but this was conditional on the fact that Moscow not deliver its S-300 systems to Riad's archenemy Tehran. Under such demands, the deal collapsed." The Russians now want to deliver their rockets only cash in advance.

In the energy sector, the situation is somewhat different: the governments in Moscow and Riyadh are among the driving forces behind limiting the oil production, with which several Opec and non-Opec countries jointly want to stabilize prices on world markets. King Salman said his country's cooperation with Russia in this area would continue. Saudi Arabian energy minister Chalid Al-Falid told Al-Arabiya that the kingdom wanted to keep the option to extend this agreement beyond March. Putin, on the other hand, said on Wednesday that the countries involved were ready to extend the agreement.

Which concrete agreements really get concluded at the end remains unclear. The FT reported on a joint investment fund over a billion dollars. The FAZ writes of the possibility that the Saudis could import Russian liquefied gas (LNG). Reuters, however, reports that balloon, which somebody had let rise in the course of the talks, had already burst: Saudi Aramco said that they would not invest in Russia's Arctic LNG project.

A Week of Russian Culture is to be held in Saudi Arabia, the kingdom's Minister of Culture and Information Awad bin Saleh Al-Awad said in an interview with TASS.

Russian Culture Week to be held in Saudi Arabia
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/10/russian-culture-week-to-be-held-in.html

"In the cooperation agreement, which we have signed with Russia’s Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, we hope for a mirror Week of Russian Culture in Saudi Arabia," Mr. Al-Awad said.

"The Week of Saudi Culture, which was organized in Moscow, is the first step towards understanding between our countries. In March 2018, we want to invite Russian editors to the international book fair in Riyadh, which is the biggest event of its kind in the Middle East. Besides, we think about hosting exhibitions from the State Hermitage. Those are just plans as yet, without exact dates or names of exposition projects," the minister said.

Saudi film makers would also learn from Russian masters the minister hoped.

"Saudi film makers have a lot to learn from Russian masters. Exchange of gained experience in the film industry would be useful to our countries. We also hope to invite Russian students to study in Saudi Arabia to see and feel our culture and then to share the received impressions and knowledge with the public of their country," the minister said, adding the third item would be joint archaeological expeditions in the kingdom.

"History of the Arabian Peninsula is thousands years long. But its cultural movement has begun only recently. This is why the topic of the Saudi culture’s openness is so important for us. And Russia with its rich cultural heritage is a best partner for the kingdom. I am in Moscow for only a couple days and already can see your potential, as well as the state’s attention to history of the nation," the minister said.

"We know only little about each other. But I have seen the interest from the Russian audience. And it is most important - to reach out to the Russian people," he told TASS.

Secrecy surrounding trainload of tanks. A randomly shot photo shows a military transport. Authorities keeping a low profile.

Railfan captures pictures of US tanks crossing Germany by the trainload: officials are saying nothing October 8, 2017
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/10/railfan-captures-pictures-of-us-tanks.html

Reichenbach: A train laden with tanks rolled through the Vogtland in the direction of Dresden or Leipzig on Thursday between 9 and 10 o'clock.

Though news of conspicuous train movements usually get around among the railfans and hobby photographers along the route, it was different this time.

The homeland researcher and author Gero Fehlhauer was out for a stroll and accidentally witnessed the train's entrance to Reichenbach and photographed it with his cellphone.

Fehlhauer wondered that he wasn't running into the usual railfans. "Perhaps the tank train was unpublished this time," he says.

This is confirmed by the railway photographer Volker Jacobi from Fraureuth. He had heard nothing about it. It is notable that such trains often run "off schedule."

The tanks, according to their colors, should not be German tanks, also the Bundeswehr Cross is missing. They look more like US Army. Maybe
on their way to the Baltics? Gero Fehlhauer gets this idea in view of the heated situation in Eastern Europe.

There are reports nationwide of transports of tanks and US war equipment in containers heading into the Baltic States. Many train engineers or other employees of the Deutsche Bahn (DB) and its subsidiary DBSchenker have brought word of the weapons transport into public notice.

So what has moved through the Vogtland? Deutsche Bahn AG does not provide any information. Holger Auferkamp, DB spokesman
for Saxony, SaxonAnhalt, Thuringia, refers to "customer data," which the federal enterprise does not divulge.

Two Freie Presse inquiries at the Bundeswehr remained unanswered yesterday evening. The Press Office of the US Army Garrison Bavaria in Grafenwöhr remained unattainable yesterday. From Saxony's Ministry of the Interior, it is supposed to be the responsibility of the Federal Police.

A spokesman of the Federal Police Inspectorate Klingenthal confirmed yesterday the train movement of the NATO forces. But thaty further details only Deutsche Bahn could provide.

Regards SDF occupying Syria's North:
It looks like Putin might strike a deal. First Assad objects, calling SDF illegal occupiers in the North, but Putin's Team might convince him so they can both convince the SDF to denounce the US and ally with Syria politically and become a legitimate Syrian state: accepted under the Syrian government.

To sweeten the deal, certain Russian support trade and build agreements will have to come in place helping the Kurds accommodate in their new home, encouraging to acknowledge their "dual identity".

If successful, this will be the prime example, how the Catalans should have been handled by Spain and then every little state vying for independence will be in awe of what happened and will be wanting to be treated with the same diplomatic excellency and see that there is no need to go independent, just need to strike a better membership deal. Russia's fame will skyrocket if they can accomplish this one.

Russian Su-24 Warplane Crashes in Syria, All Crew Members Dead
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201710101058089232-russia-su-24-warplane-crew/

The crash could have been the result of mechanical failure, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

"On October 10, when accelerating ahead of takeoff from the Hmeymim airfield in Syria, a Su-24 aircraft veered off the runway and crashed. The crew of the plane did not eject in time and died," the Russian Defense Ministry statement said.

No facilities were destroyed on the ground. A technical malfunction could have caused the crash, the ministry said.

On November 14, 2016 and December 4, 2016, a MiG-29K jet and a Su-33 fighter, respectively, rolled off the deck of Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and were lost at sea. Both planes were part of the aircraft wing of Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov during the operation in Syria.

A defense industry source told Sputnik in March 2017 that the loss of the fighter jets was caused by a break in the carrier's arresting wire.

Earlier in 2016, a Russian Aerospace Forces Mi-28N Havoc helicopter crashed near the city of Homs in Syria, killing both pilots, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Russian Su-24 warplane's crash in Syria could have been the result of mechanical failure, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Arabic-language website of Russia's state news agency, Sputnik, reported that the ZU-23-2s also known as ZU-23, a Soviet towed 23 mm anti-aircraft twin-barreled auto-cannon, have been mounted on Ural-4320 vehicles in Syria.

The Arabic Sputnik said that the Ural-4320 is known as the best model of cannon-equipped vehicle, adding that the driver's cabin and other parts of the vehicle owned by the Syrian army are armored, while the cannon's crew are being protected by a steel shield.

Relevant reports said last month that modernized tanks of T-72P and T-72P1 were being used by the army in their combat against terrorists, adding that the tanks were equipped with Contact 1 technology which increased safety of the tanks against anti-tank shells.

Also, the military experts said that although the T-72P and T-72P1 tanks were among the advanced military vehicles but they were updated and handed over to the Syrian army, adding these tanks were superior than T-72P3 and T-90 tanks in some cases.

Senior terrorist commander Omar al-Maf'alani was assassinated in a booby-tapped car bomb blast in the Southern province of Dara'a, militant-affiliated websites disclosed on Tuesday.

Notorious Terrorist Commander Assassinated in Southern Syria

The websites reported that Omar al-Maf'alani, nom de guerre Abu Hafas, was killed in a booby-trapped explosion in his car in the town of Seyda in Eastern Dara'a.

The websites further said that Abu Hafas was an executive staff in Dar al-Adl court of the terrorist groups in Eastern Dara'a.

Reports said last month that assassination of commanders of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) significantly increased after intensified clashes between the FSA and the rival terrorist group of ISIL in the Southern province of Dara'a.

Naser Khalil Mahasenah, commander of the FSA-affiliated Jeish Ababil, was killed along with several of his aids in a booby-trapped attack on his cars on a road connecting the towns of Zamrin and al-Hareh to each other in Northwestern Dara'a.

Sharif al-Kayed, another military commander of the FSA, was kidnapped on al-Karak al-Sharqi's road to al-Harak region in the Eastern countryside of Dara'a by unknown attackers.

The FSA and the ISIL engaged in fierce clashes in the towns of Jalin, Hit and Odwan in the Western countryside of Dara'a.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continue the march in ISIL-held regions along the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province after a recent agreement with the terrorist group, Kurdish military sources said on Tuesday.

SDF Captures More ISIL-Held Villages in Eastern Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960718001117

The Kurdish sources said that the SDF has captured the villages of Zughayr Kabeera, Huwayj Diyab, Abu Ghaminah and Muhaymidah 10 km Southwards along the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River.

Relevant reports said on Monday that the SDF managed to expel ISIL from the villages of Wesiha, Al-Sawah and Zughayr Jazeera amid clashes on Saturday and Sunday within the framework of the Island Storm operation.

The SDF fighters had captured the villages of Hermushiya Kabeera, Hermushiya Saghira, Tall Kasrah and Tall Abu Fahat on October 4; the villages are all located directly to the North of Deir Ezzur city.

Meanwhile, clashes continue to unfold across several points along the Khabur River in Southern Hasaka and Eastern Deir Ezzur where the SDF is probing ISIL lines and steadily advancing.

In total, 8 ISIL members were killed by the SDF across the Northern and Eastern countryside of Deir Ezzur during the latest round of operations.

The ISIL is expected to lose control of its last villages in Northern Deir Ezzur before the end of October.

Scores of the members of the Syrian Democratic Forces have cut relations with the SDF and entered Turkey via Syria's Northern borders, militant-affiliated websites disclosed on Tuesday.

Scores of Gunmen Defect SDF, Escape to Turkey via Northern Syria
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960718001152

The websites said that a number of the SDF fighters have walked away from the SDF and escaped from Hasaka, heading to Turkey. They added that the SDF has recruited the defected gunmen by force.

Relevant reports said last month that 50 Kurdish troops stationed in Northern Syria defected the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), formed by the US under the pretext of fight against the ISIL, to protest at the discrimination practices in the dispatch of Arabs and Kurds to the frontline.

"The Kurdish forces arrived in the city of Jarabulus in Northern Aleppo after defecting their comrades in Saleh Muslim party," a dissident Kurdish member of the Syrian Kurds' Democratic Union told FNA in late September.

According to the source, the defected group of 50 Kurdish forces fled Kobani and headed towards Jarabulus where Turkey deployed its forces.

"The gap in the Kurdish units widened after the SDF showed a discriminatory attitude towards sending Kurds and the Turkey-supported militants to the forefronts of battle against the ISIL," the source added.

Citing the South Korean Defense Ministry, Lee revealed that 235 gigabytes of data were lost in the cyber breach, presstv reported.

A plan for a “decapitation strike,” targeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was also among the files, according to the report originally published by FT.

The files also included contingency plans for Seoul’s Special Forces as well as information on key military facilities and power plants, the lawmaker said.

The South Korean Defense Ministry has declined to comment on the reports.

The ministry said in May that the North had penetrated Seoul’s military online network, although it did not reveal what was stolen at the time, state-run Yonhap news agency reported.

The United States and its ally South Korea have been at loggerheads with the North over Pyongyang’s weapons and nuclear programs.

North Korea, however, strongly defends its military deterrent against hostility by the US and its regional allies, including South Korea and Japan.

US President Donald Trump’s belligerent rhetoric against Pyongyang has given rise to the tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The two sides have traded a barrage of military threats in recent months, prompting speculations of a looming war in the region.

On Saturday, Trump US rejected diplomatic means for dealing with North Korea’s missile and nuclear weapon tests, suggesting that a military response is the only option against Pyongyang.

Hours after Trump’s comments, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un spoke in defense of his country’s nuclear program as a “powerful deterrent” against the “protracted nuclear threats of the US imperialists.”

US Defense Secretary James Mattis said that the United States Army “must stand ready” in the face of a North Korean threat in case a “diplomatically led” solution with the country does not work.

Defense Secretary: US Army Must Stand Ready in Face of North Korean Threat
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960718001272

“It is right now a diplomatically led, economic sanctions-buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off of this path,” Mattis said on Monday while speaking at the Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting in Washington, DC, World News reported.

“What does the future hold? Neither you nor I can say, so there is one thing the US Army can do. And that is you have to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our president can deploy if needed,” he stated.

Mattis’s remarks come as tensions between the United States and North Korea are at a new high following Donald Trump’s United Nations General Assembly address in September, where the US president warned North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the US would “totally destroy” his country of 26 million people if necessary.

In response, Kim said Trump will “pay dearly” for threatening to destroy North Korea. He added that Trump is "a rogue and a gangster fond of playing with fire," who is "unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country."

Meanwhile, Mattis said that war with North Korea would be “catastrophic.”

“What we want to do is be so ready and be very much aware that we fight the way we come, that everybody in the world wants to deal with Secretary [Rex] Tillerson and the Department of State, not the Department of Defense and the United States Army,” the former Marine Corps general said.

North Korea has conducted several nuclear tests and missile test-launches in response to US threats against the country.

The North Korean leader ordered the production of more rocket warheads and engines in August, shortly after the United States suggested that its threats of military action and sanctions were having an impact on Pyongyang’s behavior.

Pyongyang says it will not give up on its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy toward the country and dissolves the US-led UN command in South Korea. Thousands of US soldiers are stationed in South Korea and Japan.

Analysts say the Trump administration’s threats against North Korea are counterproductive and justify Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programs that it insists are for self-defense. They say the threats could have an opposite effect, intensifying the deteriorating situation in the Korean Peninsula.

Russia's fame will skyrocket if they can accomplish this one.

lilies,

Is there an article to support Russia trying to make the "deal" with the SDF and the Kurds? :/

In response to both Posts - The recent Kurdish autonomy independence referendum was unconstitutional/illegal and backed by Israel and it's U.S./Pentagon/NATO minions. The sole purpose of getting the Kurds "all pumped up" in forming their own "Independence State" was to illegally siphon off sovereign parts of Turkey, Iraq and Syria. Prior to the referendum, Kurdish military forces had "taken control of Kirkuk", the fifth-biggest city in Iraq and capital Governorate to help finance their autonomy.

The Kurdish referendum reminds me of the antics of a few Jews who decided to set up shop in Palestine, calling it - The State of Israel - and using the false pretenses of a document called the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which favored the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine, and by which President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave his blessing. (I have a bone to pick with Old Harry - which I'll reserve for another time.)

The way I look at it, Israel is using the Kurds as pawns to further it's own ends?

200,000 Israelis expected in “Kurdistan” once independence is declared
https://alethonews.wordpress.com/2017/09/21/200000-israelis-expected-in-kurdistan-once-independence-is-declared/

The plan to create a South Sudan and a Kurdistan has been an Israeli military objective following missile development at the end of the nineties. These territories, largely administered by the Israelis, have enabled a rear attack on Egypt and Syria.

The Barzani family that governs the Iraqi Kurdistan with an iron fist, is historically connected to Israel. Mullah Mustafa Barzani, father of the current president Massoud Barzani, was one of Mossad’s high official.

Will the World Follow Israel in Recognizing Iraqi Kurdistan's Independence?

The Turkish former consul general in the Kurdish Regional Government's capital Erbil said that it is Israel which will be the first country to recognize the independence of the region because Tel Aviv is interested in buying oil there.

"Under the pretext of a US intervention and the fight against Daesh, the Kurdish Regional Government was able to significantly expand the boundaries of its territory," Selcen said, adding that Lebanon could fit five times into the area of Iraq controlled by Kurds.

According to him, there are deposits of minerals and fertile agricultural areas in Iraqi Kurdistan, where approximately six million people currently reside. "There is also some international support, but not in terms of recognition of independence. As you know, declaring one's independence does not mean being recognized as an independent state," Selcen concluded.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that "while Israel opposes terrorism as a whole, it supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve their own state."

The Russian Foreign Ministry has released an official statement which rejects attempts by the Kurdistan Regional Government to unilaterally cede from Iraq.

Russia officially rejects Iraqi Kurdish breakaway
https://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,41670.510.html

The foreign ministry statement says that whilst Russia respects Kurdish desires for an independent nation, it does not believe that such a goal should be achieved at the risk of further destabilizing an already war-stricken Iraq.

Russian foreign ministry officials are concerned that the brazen separatist actions of the Kurdistan Regional Government will only serve to encourage more conflict and political insecurity.

According the Russian foreign ministry, the issue of Kurdish independence in Iraq should be discussed through “constructive and respectful dialogue” and solved in a way that maintains the integrity of a unified Iraq.

I have seen the Kurds as being used by both the U.S. and Israel for quite awhile. Of course the Kurds are going for their own sovereignty.

"dual identity" seems like a reasonable idea but I have seen nothing about a "deal" to achieve that.

And I see nothing but continued alliance of the SDF with the U.S. and Israel. That is why I asked for a supporting source for a deal.

The Russian Defense Ministry has raised the issue of some 300 Daesh terrorists on pickup trucks infiltrating through a US-controlled zone in Syria's al-Tanf.

Moscow Wants Washington to Explain Why Militants Operate Near US Forces in Syria
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201710111058123975-russia-us-forces-syria-militants/

The Russian Defense Ministry has urged "the US side to explain its selective blindness regarding militants" operating near US forces in Syria.

The ministry's spokesman said the 300 Daesh militants had tried to block a strategically important road linking Damascus and Deir ez-Zor, used for delivering humanitarian aid for civilians and supplies for the Syrian Army.

Aid for Militants: US to Be Responsible for Peace Process Sabotage in Syria

Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that truce in the southern de-escalation zone in Syria could be undermined after the relocation of 600 militants and two convoys with medical aid into the area.

"Considering such significant reinforcement in terms of manpower, medicines and food, at the US' tacit approval, one does not have to be an expert to forecast an attempt to derail the truce in the southern de-escalation zone", he said.

According to the spokesman, on October 2-3 a group of 600 militants, previously based in the Rukban refugee camp, located in the American-controlled al-Tanf zone, headed westward in SUVs, and after covering some 300 kilometers entered the southern zone of de-escalation through a former border control point at the Syria-Jordan border in Daraa.

By another 'strange' coincidence, almost simultaneously with them, two convoys [30 and 60 tons respectively] with medicines and products for the local population entered this de-escalation zone… All humanitarian aid that arrived and, above all, medicines, was unloaded and is under control of the militants who came from al-Tanf. At the same time, according to available information, these settlements are under the control of al-Nusra Front 'sleeper cells'," he said.

Konashenkov said that meant that 600 militants who arrived from the US-controlled zone in al-Tanf were either to fight these 'cells' for medicines and food, or act jointly with them.

The spokesman underscored the US would solely bear all the responsibility for sabotaging the peace process in Syria.

US Actions in Syria Look Like an Attempt to Split the Country

In his turn, Director of the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry Georgiy Borisenko told Sputnik that US actions near the al-Tanf base in Syria are reminiscent of an attempt to divide the war-torn state:

"Of course, we have a lot of questions about what the Americans are doing in Syria. Unlike the Russian forces, they are there in violation of international law," Borisenko said in an exclusive interview.

They even establish certain zones, for example, in the al-Tanf area, where they refuse to allow the forces of the legitimate government. In fact, this is reminiscent of an attempt to divide the country, split Syria in order to create governing bodies controlled by the United States and its allies in certain part [of Syria]," the Russian diplomat stressed.

He recalled that the Russian Defense Ministry, "on the basis of available objective data, draws attention to the fact that in fact, the Americans and the opposition units oriented toward them are actually not fighting Daesh militants.

"We are surprised about it. We will further monitor the situation, but we proceed from the assumption that any flirtation with terrorists is always dangerous and will turn against those who play such games," Borisenko pointed out. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

Washington uses alleged N. Korean missile threat as a pretext for deploying THAAD systems close to the borders of Russia and China.

US THAAD Missile Defense Systems in S Korea Target Russia, China - Moscow
https://sputniknews.com/world/201710111058123733-us-thaad-russia/

The US THAAD missile defense systems in South Korea target Russia and China, Georgiy Borisenko, Director of the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry said in an exclusive interview with Sputnik.

According to Borisenko, Washington is merely using the alleged N. Korean missile threat as a pretext for deploying THAAD systems close to the borders of Russia and China.

"But the fact is that these systems are absolutely incapable of preventing North Korea from retaliating in the event of aggression against it. The border on the Korean Peninsula passes so that Seoul is in the range of the long-range artillery of the neighboring state. THAAD systems are not capable of intercepting artillery shells. Therefore, they are simply not needed against N. Korea," the Russian diplomat said.

"So, we and our partners in China are well aware that THAAD is directed against Russia and China," Borisenko stressed.

Moscow and Beijing oppose THAAD's deployment, saying it could further deteriorate the nuclear crisis and provoke North Korean aggression. Russia, alongside China, also criticized the increase in South Korea's joint military activities with Washington as a danger to the peace and stability of the region.

Moscow has called on Washington to immediately reduce the intensity of rhetoric on Korean crisis, Georgiy Borisenko, Director of the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry told Sputnik on Wednesday.

Approach of US Navy to Korean Peninsula Opens Room for Provocations - Moscow
https://sputniknews.com/asia/201710111058123405-uss-reagan-korea-provocation-russia/

The comments come as the American warships, led by the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, head toward the North Korean coast.

"The situation is very dangerous, it worries us very much, especially because we have borders with North Korea," Georgiy Borisenko told Sputnik.

"We have repeatedly said this to the Americans, urging them to solve this problem [the Korean crisis] exclusively by political and diplomatic means. We believe that it is always possible to agree on a mutually beneficial basis to avoid catastrophic developments," the diplomat stressed.

He further noted that the US, in working contact with Russia, as well as in public rhetoric, does not rule out any options for resolving the situation around the Korean Peninsula.

"But on our part, it is constantly stressed that this is a very dangerous game, that it is necessary to immediately reduce the intensity of rhetoric, because even verbal accusations are exacerbating the situation, not to mention specific actions when naval armadas are being pulled up to the DPRK coasts," Borisenko stated.

Earlier in September, the US Navy announced that the entire USS Ronald Reagan strike group, which is comprised of four destroyers and two submarines, is set to participate in military drills alongside South Korean ships in late October.

The Pentagon then claimed that the exercises had been planned far in advance and are not a response to current tensions with Pyongyang.

The US Navy has announced that the nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan will be deployed to the Korean Peninsula to participate in joint exercises with the South Korean Navy as part of a continued American military buildup in the region as it faces off against North Korea.

USS Ronald Reagan Supercarrier to Conduct Exercises Off Korean Peninsula
https://sputniknews.com/military/201709271057726851-ronald-reagan-korean-peninsula-exercises/

The entire USS Ronald Reagan strike group, which includes four destroyers and two submarines, will be participating in exercises alongside South Korean ships in late October. The Pentagon claims that the exercises have been in the works for a long time, and are not a response to current tensions with Pyongyang.

On Friday, the 100,000-ton Reagan conducted drills with Japanese warships south of the Korean Peninsula as a response to the twin North Korean ballistic missile tests in August and September.

Then on Saturday, a pair of US B-1B Lancer strategic bombers flew within miles of the North Korean border. North Korea did not issue an official response to the mission, leading South Korean intelligence to claim that Pyongyang only found out about the bombers when the Pentagon told them.

Japanese outlet Chosun Ilbo reports that the Pentagon is considering arguably their most severe military action yet: sending a carrier group over the Northern Limit Line, a disputed maritime demarcation in the Yellow Sea. This could allow an American fleet to sail up North Korea's west coast and potentially threaten Pyongyang itself.

The peninsula has settled into an uncomfortable, but predictable, rhythm. US bloc military exercises are met with North Korean missile and nuclear tests; North Korean tests are followed by more drills, with increasingly lethal hardware. But bit by bit, the war of words between Pyongyang and Washington has become more belligerent as the stand-off threatens to wear into its sixth month.

US Air Force, South Korean Air Force and Japanese Air-Self Defense jets conducted a military training exercise over the Sea of Japan Tuesday night, according to a US military statement, to hone their "combat skills."

Supersonic US B-1B Bombers Fly Near Korean Peninsula in Drill
https://sputniknews.com/news/201710111058118754-supersonic-us-b-1b-bombers-fly-drills/

"This is a clear demonstration of our ability to conduct seamless operations with all of our allies anytime anywhere," US Air Force Maj. Patrick Applegate said in an October 10 statement issued by US Pacific Command. Flying and training at night with our allies in a safe, effective manner is an important capability shared between the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea," the major said, adding that the drill "hones the tactical prowess of each nations' aviators."

Taking off from South Dakota, the drill marked the first time B-1B Lancers carried out training drills with Japanese and South Korean counterparts simultaneously at night, USPACOM added. The strategic bombers were escorted by Japan's F-15s and South Korea's F-15Ks while flying around the Sea of Japan.

The warplanes rehearsed an air attack over the Korean Peninsula, to the Peninsula's east in the Sea of Japan, and to the Peninsula's west in the Yellow Sea, Yonhap report. This included firing air-to-ground missiles.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the US deployment of its missile launchers at a base in Romania violates the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

US Missile Defense Deployment in Romania Threatens Russia - Senior Diplomat
https://sputniknews.com/world/201710111058123585-inf-treaty-romania-missile-defense/

By deploying missiles in Romania, the US is violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and poses a threat to Russia's security,
Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North America Department Georgiy Borisenko said in an interview with Sputnik.

Borisenko said the United States has accused Russia of similar violations for "about four years, but it has not shown any real evidence that we are violating something somewhere, only some pictures from Google Earth, which allegedly depict some launching systems on the ground. But everything is very blurry, and it's completely unclear why these systems are supposed to shoot at a distance that violates INF," Borisenko said.

"The Americans themselves have already deployed… at its missile defense base in Romania, and next year will also deploy in Poland, launchers… whose placement on the ground is prohibited by the INF Treaty. They can only be on ships. We consider what is happening as an INF Treaty violation, and regard it as a direct threat to ourselves," he said.

The INF Treaty, signed by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and his US counterpart Ronald Reagan in 1987, prohibits the development, deployment and testing of ground-launched ballistic or cruise missiles with ranges of between 300 and 3,400 miles. Moscow and Washington have repeatedly accused each other of violating the treaty.

The US withdrawal from last year's agreement with Iran to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons will prompt more instability in the region and globally, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry diplomat told Sputnik.

Russia Warns Against US Withdrawal From Iran Nuclear Deal
https://sputniknews.com/world/201710111058124722-us-iran-nuclear-deal/

A possible US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal will make the situation in the Middle East worse, a senior Russian diplomat told Sputnik, adding that Moscow does not understand the reasoning behind Washington's desire to exit the accord.

"I cannot say that Russia should condemn somebody or something here. We want our interests to be taken into account and therefore we respect the interests of other states. Another thing is that we do not understand why the United States is interested in a withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal," the Director of the North America Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry Georgiy Borisenko said.

According to Borisenko, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), reached in 2015 by Tehran and international mediators to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, reflected "the common understanding of how this situation could be settled."

"No optimal alternatives [to JCPOA] have been presented so far… Will anyone benefit from Iran having a nuclear program which is not only peaceful in nature?… It will lead to the further deterioration of the situation in the Middle East and affect global stability," Borisenko added.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow is considering various options for responding to the seizure of Russian diplomatic property in California by the United States and has not ruled out that it will demand real parity in the number of US and Russian diplomats.

Russia May Demand Further Reduction of US Diplomatic Staff, Close Consulate Gen.
https://sputniknews.com/world/201710111058122886-russia-us-consulate-general-diplomatic-staff/

A senior Russian diplomat stated that Moscow may demand real parity in the number of US and Russian diplomats, which would entail a US diplomatic mission staff cut to 300 people or less.

"As for the response, we've said, including in public, that in diplomacy there is an inviolable principle of reciprocity, and Americans know this very well. If they behaved in this way, it means they agree that we can act in kind with their foreign institutions in Russia. With regards to specific measures, we will consider them, and if necessary, they will be applied," Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North America Department Georgiy Borisenko said in an exclusive interview.

Moscow has not abandoned its intention to file a lawsuit with a the US court over the situation around the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco,
Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North America Department Georgiy Borisenko said.

"No, we have not abandoned anything at all. In line with the instruction of the Russian president, we are working actively on this. There are US lawyers who are ready to interact with us. But this is a slow process. In any case, the statute of limitations here is quite solid, so there is no hurry. We work methodically, consistently, select materials in order to maximally substantiate our lawsuit. When everything is ready, it will be filed," Borisenko said.

In early August, the United States introduced its newest package of anti-Russian sanctions; after that, Russia declared that the diplomatic presence of the United States in Russia would be reduced from 755 people to 455 to coincide with the number of consular personnel that Russia had in US.

On September 2, at the request of US authorities, the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco and trade missions in Washington and New York were closed. After that, the buildings were searched. Washington said that this step was in response to Moscow's decision to reduce the size of the US diplomatic staff in Russia. Russia called these actions an unfriendly step and pledged to sue the US authorities over the situation.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the US searches of Russian diplomatic property were outrageous and violated international law.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that searches conducted by US security forces in Russia's diplomatic compounds in the country amount to an occupation.

We insist that any presence in these buildings and on this territory without the consent of the rightful owner is occupation. This term is relevant not only to major developments of a conflict nature, military actions, this term is quite applicable to what the United States has done, and we will insist on this, the United States has already been informed about it," Ryabkov said.

The United States will offer multi-million dollar rewards for information leading to the arrest of two senior Hezbollah military commanders, US Department of State Coordinator for Counterterrorism Nathan Sales told reporters on Tuesday.

"Today, I am announcing rewards for two senior Hezbollah leaders under the State Department's Rewards for Justice Program. First, the department is offering a reward of up to $7 million for information that leads to the location, arrest or conviction in any country of Talal Hammiyeh," Sales said. "We're also offering a reward of up to $5 million for information that leads to location, arrest or conviction in any country of Fouad Shukr."

(For the first time in ~a decade, the State Dept is offering reward money for Hezbollah leaders. Here's the new Wanted Poster:)

National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen claimed that the Lebanese group Hezbollah was determined to give itself an option to attack inside the United States.

"We in the intelligence community do continue to see activity on behalf of Hezbollah here inside the homeland," Rasmussen said. "It's our assessment that Hezbollah is determined to give itself a potential homeland option as a critical component of its terrorism playbook."

Hezbollah is a Shia islamist movement based in Lebanon. Since 2012 Hezbollah militants are fighting on the side of the government armed forces in Syrian civil war. The movement is classified as a terrorist organization in the US, Israel, the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Daesh and al-Nusra Front have received “rockets, machine guns, anti-air weapons and even tanks in exchange for oil stolen from wells in Syria and Iraq,” the Syrian Defense Ministry claims.

Syria shows evidence that western weapons end up in terrorist hands
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syria-shows-evidence-western-weapons-end-terrorist-hands/

On Monday, the Ministry released footage of the arms confiscated from different terrorist organizations, including Daesh (ISIS) and rebranded al-Nusra Front, along with the report, where it said that most of the weapons had been manufactured in the US or by its allies, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The manual says that the arms were obtained by terrorists via various channels and via companies in Eastern Europe with ties to the US and NATO intelligence agencies. They had entered Syria via Turkey or Saudi Arabia, where, in turn, they arrived “via European ports of the American Ramstein Air Base in Germany.”

It also says that Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorists were supplied with “rockets, rifles, machine guns, anti-air weapons, and even tanks in exchange for oil that the terrorists stole from wells in Syria and Iraq.”

After the liberation of east Aleppo and areas in the provinces of Homs, Hama, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zzor, the terrorists of these two organizations also left behind weapons made in Bulgaria and Eastern European countries, apparently bought and delivered by the US. The Ministry pointed out that the discovery suggests that the US has been applying the very same pattern it used in Afghanistan in the 1980s, when the US and Saudi Arabia sent weapons to Pakistani intelligence, which ended up with al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

The report specifically points out that Israel had also provided various types of weapons to the al-Nusra Front and other terror groups in Syria.

The document says that these weapons ended up in the hands of terrorists, as evidenced by videos and photos that emerged in social media showing al-Nusra Front terrorists using US-made TOW anti-tank rockets, through the support programs of the administration of former US President Barack Obama, for the so-called “moderate opposition.”

The Ministry noted that all the fighters of the so-called Free Syrian Army who were trained and armed by the US in Turkey in September 2015, later pledged allegiance to al-Nusra after entering Syria. The same happened with the fighters trained in Jordan, who ended up joining Daesh, and with large number of fighters from the Nour Eddin al-Zinki Movement, a rebel group which was supported by the US, which also joined al-Nusra Front.

The Ministry specifically noted said that after the Obama administration lifted the ban on providing lethal weapons to terrorists, Saudi Arabia bought 15,000 TOW anti-tank rockets from the US at a cost of $1 billion. These weapons have been used by terrorists against the Syrian army since 2014.

“The weapons purchased by Saudi Arabia from Central and Eastern European states are largely incompatible with the Saudi armament program and equipment, indicating that Saudi Arabia isn’t actually the final user of these weapons; rather they go to terrorists in Syria,” the document says.

Over two million CITY 4,000 rockets came from Bulgaria via Saudi Arabia and ended up in the hands of terrorists in Aleppo, it added.

Treaty Violation? Damascus Claims to Find US, UK Chemical Weapons in Syria

It also noted that on December 19, 2016, while de-mining al-Sakhour area in eastern Aleppo, various types of ammunition were found at the site, “including US-made ammo such as 60mm mortar rounds and grenades fired by launcher attachments for rifles.”

The document specified that among the confiscated weapons were Soviet-made guns which “were likely exported to the states of the Warsaw Pact in the past and were later purchased from these states.” They ended up in the hands of terrorists “because of the lack of scrutiny about who is receiving them.”

“This is intentional and seeks to escalate the war in Syria, in addition to violating the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty of 2014, which states that it’s illegal to export weapons if there is a likelihood of them falling into the hands of terrorists,” the Ministry stated.

It ended the report by concluding that “geographic proximity and the lack of oversight of exports allowed some states to benefit from the arms trade, and in most cases this was done with the help of the US, which assisted its allies in sending weapons to Daesh and al-Nusra terrorists, among others, and provided high-tech weapons to escalate the situation in Syria. Therefore Washington is responsible for the expansion of these terror organizations in Syria.”

The Channels of Western-Made Arms Supplies to Syria

Earlier on Monday, Gen. Ali Al Ali, chief of the main operational directorate of the Syrian army commented on the revelations, saying that Syrian radicals were supplied with weapons “bought under the Pentagon’s program of assistance to US allies.”

Another Syrian army official, Walid Khali, told reporters that al-Nusra Front militants, who attacked Russian military police in Syria on September 18, had carried over 100 small arms and hand-held grenade launchers made in the United States, Belgium and France, which had been illegally delivered from abroad.

In September, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) issued a report, which revealed that Pentagon had been spending as much as $2.2 billion on its program to supply Soviet-style arms and ammunition to Syria via various contractors and sub-contractors in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet states.

The report revealed that arms factories across the Balkans and Eastern Europe have been “already working at capacity to supply the Syrian war,” but “are unable to meet the demand.”

US forces are seen at the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) headquarters after it was hit by Turkish airstrikes in Mount Karachok near Malikiya, Syria April 25, 2017.

“The US Department of Defense (DoD) has turned to new suppliers like Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Ukraine for additional munitions while relaxing standards on the material it’s willing to accept,” the document revealed.

“The Pentagon is buying the arms through two channels: the Special Operations Command (SOCOM), which oversees special operations across all services of the US military, and the Picatinny Arsenal, a little-known US Army weapons facility in New Jersey,” it said.

The munitions are the transported by both sea and air from Europe to Turkey, Jordan and Kuwait. They are then distributed to US allies in northern and southern Syria by plane and truck, it stated.

This equipment supplied to these parts of Syria, reportedly included firearms, mortars, AK-47 rifles, heavy machine guns, RPGs and various types of ammunition, it concluded.

Armed ISIS militants coming from areas under control of US forces and allied rebels have seized and stolen two convoys of medicine and food headed for Syrian settlements, said Russian Defence Ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov on Wednesday.

According to the Ministry, no less than 300 armed terrorists came in pick-up trucks from the US-occupied Al Tanf area in southeastern Syria and attempted to block the strategic Damascus-Deir Ezzor highway, one of the main arteries for Syrian military supplies and humanitarian aid to the frontline.

“The question how about 300 ISIS militants using pick-up trucks who tried to block the strategically important Damascus-Deir ez-Zor highway, through which supplies for Syrian troops are brought and humanitarian aid for the population is delivered, penetrated into the US-controlled area in Al Tanf remains unanswered,” Konashenkov stressed.

“We offer the American side to clarify another instance of turning a blind eye to the activities of militants operating under their very noses. It is purely for military ethics reasons that we do not publish the latest photos of the US base in Al Tanf with an abundance of pick-up trucks with heavy machine guns and recoilless guns that are not typical of the US army.”

According to General Konashenkov, not only have terrorists been reported to be freely residing within US-controlled Al Tanf, but they have even been allowed to move around freely towards other rebel-held areas of Syria.

“From October 2 to 3, about 600 militants stationed at the Rukban refugee camp in the US-controlled Al Tanf area have departed westward in an orderly manner in off-road vehicles,” the General said.

According to intelligence reports, these 600 terrorist fighters have passed into Jordanian territory through the Tafas border crossing, only to enter Syria again in the southern Daraa Governorate de-escalation zone, where a ceasefire between the government and rebel fighters is in place.

“In another ‘strange’ coincidence, almost simultaneously with them, two convoys with medicines and food for local population entered this de-escalation zone,” Konashenkov stated. Reportedly, a total of 90 tonnes of humanitarian aid was delivered by trucks from Al Tanf to the rebel-held Daraa cities of Hajmi and Khel, both of which are under control of Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Al-Qaeda offshoot formerly known as Al-Nusra.

The humanitarian aid convoys, which were stolen from the Syrian Army on the Damascus-Deir Ezzor road, were unloaded upon reaching their destinations in the Daraa de-escalation zone, and all aid is reported to be in the hands of the rebel forces there.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the stealing of the convoys is intended as a provocation to disrupt the ceasefire in the southern de-escalation zone, that was established as part of the Astana negotiations.

“Considering such serious manpower reinforcements with US benevolence and the creation of the stock of medicines with food supplies, one should not be an expert to forecast an attempt to disrupt the peace agreement now in the southern de-escalation zone as well. We are warning that all the responsibility for the peace process sabotage will be borne by the US side,” General Konashenkov concluded.

The Russian statement is a follow-up of earlier accusations by the Russian Federation that the United States is merely “simulating” its war against ISIS, rather than taking decisive action. Konashenkov has stated before that “the base illegally deployed by them [the US] to southern Syria is turning into a black hole.”

The former Islamic State linked Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander, ‘Abdel-Jabbar ‘Okeidi, announced on Tuesday the opening of a military academy to train new militants to ‘liberate’ Syria from the Assad government.

‘Okeidi stated in a video released, today, that the academy will be named in honor of the deceased Islamist leader, ‘Abdel-Qader Saleh – he was militant commander of Liwaa Al-Tawheed from the northern Aleppo town of Mar’e.

The former Syrian Army officer, ‘Okeidi, first became famous for his defection and then joining forces with the Islamic State during the siege of the Mennagh Military Airport in the northern country of Aleppo in early 2013.

Following the capture of the Mennagh Airport, ‘Okeidi called the Islamic State terrorists his brothers and a key ally in the battle against the Syrian government.

The army men carried out an ambush operation against a military column of ISIL terrorists after they tried to go through Wadi al-Azib region towards areas under the control of Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) in Northern Hama.

Six military vehicles were destroyed and at least fifteen terrorists were killed in the operation.

In relevant developments in the province on Monday two senior commanders of Al-Nusra Front were killed in clashes with the Syrian Army troops in Northeastern Hama.

The militant-affiliated websites reported that Al-Nusra Commander Abu Omar was killed in the army attack in Northeastern Hama.

They added that Khalid Shalal al-Ahmad, nom de guerre Abu Adam, another field commander of Al-Nusra was also killed in heavy fighting with the army soldiers in the town of Tal Aswad in Northeastern Hama.

At least two security officers were killed and several other people, civilians including, were wounded, after a triple terror attack devastated the Syrian capital city of Damascus on Wednesday afternoon.

Three suicide bombers target the police HQ in Damascus
http://www.fort-russ.com/2017/10/three-suicide-bombers-target-police-hq.html

The three suicide bombers blew themselves up in Khalid ibn Al Walid Street when they were trying to storm the police headquarters there.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said terrorists tried to storm the police headquarters and clashed with the guards, forcing them to blow themselves up. A third suicide bomber was surrounded in an alley, opposite to the building of the police headquarters. He then blew himself up, the Ministry said in a statement.

Security forces closed all access points to the scene of the terror attack.

The police chief of Damascus, Major General Mohammed Kheir Ismail, said the security guards surrounded two terrorists who then blew themselves up.
Later, a group of security officers surrounded the third suicide bomber who managed to enter one of the alleys opposite to the police station.

This isn’t the first time the police headquarters in Damascus are being targeted by terrorists.

On October 3rd, three suicide bombers blew themselves up at the police headquarters in Al Midan district in central Damascus, claiming the lives of 17 policemen and civilians.

Surveys obtained by the Navy Times, the oldest and most trusted news source about US sailors, the military and the DoD, have revealed 'disastrous morale' aboard the Japan-based USS Shiloh cruiser, a vital link in the 7th Fleet’s West Pacific mission to deter North Korea, and morbid fear of its former Commanding Officer.

US Sailors Blast Their Ship Deterring N Korea as 'Ineffective Floating Prison'
https://sputniknews.com/us/201710111058130301-us-navy-survey/

One of the sailors referred to the military vessel as a "floating prison," while another one warned that "it’s only a matter of time before something horrible happens", according to the three surveys, which have been conducted among the sailors of USS Shiloh during the 26-month command of Capt. Adam M. Aycock’s, who rotated out as scheduled in a standard change-of-command ceremony on August 30.

The warship, which is based at the US Navy base in Yokosuka, Japan, is part of the 7th Fleet’s West Pacific mission to deter North Korea. The comments however reveal that the sailors doubt it could fulfill its tasks.

"I just pray we never have to shoot down a missile from North Korea," one of the servicemen said, "because then our ineffectiveness will really show."

Many of the comments were specifically about former Commanding Officer (CO) Capt. Adam M. Aycock, who "was widely feared among sailors, who said minor on-the-job mistakes often led to time in the brig, where they would be fed only bread and water," the outlet says.

"These comments are not unique. Each survey runs hundreds of pages, with crew members writing anonymously of dysfunction from the top, suicidal thoughts, exhaustion, despair and concern that the Shiloh was being pushed underway while vital repairs remained incomplete," it acknowledges.

"It feels like a race to see which will break down first," one sailor wrote, "the ship or it’s […] crew."

The US Navy's morale problems have come into focus following the at-sea collision of the USS John S.McCain guided missile destroyer with a merchant ship near Singapore in August that killed 17 sailors.

The Shiloh belongs to the same chain of command of the US Navy in Asia, which has recently seen a major leadership shake up. Aycock however was not fired.

The USS Shiloh got into the spotlight this summer, when one of its sailors, Peter Mims, went missing. The vessel launched a 50-hour search involving ships, aircraft and a carrier, presumably thinking that he went overboard. The sailor, however, was finally found aboard ship. The reasons for his behavior have not been disclosed.

"After Mims went missing, several sailors contacted Navy Times and voiced concern about the Shiloh, its CO and the crew, prompting Navy Times to submit a Freedom of Information request for copies of recent command climate surveys," the website said.

US Navy officials acknowledged to the website that "Aycock’s superiors at Task Force 70 were aware of problems after the first negative survey, taken two months into his command."

Aycock declined to comment for this story through a spokesperson at the Naval War College, where he now works as a researcher with the Institute for Future Warfare Studies.

The USS John S. McCain’s top two officers were relieved by the US Navy after a “loss of confidence” in light of the deadly collision on August 21 in which the US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer collided with the Liberian-flagged chemical tanker Alnic MC tanker in a busy shipping lane east of Singapore, killing 10 US soldiers and injuring five more.

US Navy Fires USS McCain’s Top Officers Following Deadly, ‘Preventable’ Crash
https://sputniknews.com/military/201710111058148553-US-navy-fires-USS-McCain-top-officers/

After to a Navy statement released Tuesday, Commander Alfredo J. Sanchez, the ship's captain, and Commander Jessie L. Sanchez, the ship's executive officer, were relieved of their duties by Vice Admiral Phil Sawyer on Wednesday "due to a loss of confidence."

"While the investigation is ongoing, it is evident the collision was preventable, the commanding officer exercised poor judgment and the executive officer exercised poor leadership of the ship's training program," the statement reads.

Alfredo Sanchez was reassigned to Commander, Naval Forces Japan (CNFG), while Jessie Sanchez was reassigned to Ship Repair Facility (SRF) Yokosuka.

In addition, Commander Ed Angelinas, who was the commanding officer of the USS McCampbell, assumed the role of commanding officer of the USS John S. McCain, while Lieutenant Commander Ray Ball, former chief engineer of the USS Antietam, will assume duties as acting executive officer.

According to Navy officials, the destroyer may have suffered loss of steering control, which sailors are trained to handle. However, it is yet unclear what caused the collision with the merchant vessel. The McCain collision occurred shortly after the USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine cargo ship off the coast of Japan in June, killing seven soldiers and prompting Admiral John Richardson, chief of naval operations, to order a comprehensive review of Navy ship operations.

The results of the Navy-wide review are expected in a few weeks.

In September, Task Force 70 Commander Rear Admiral Charles Williams and Destroyer Squadron 15 Commander Captain Jeffrey Bennett were relieved by the Navy "due to a loss of confidence in their ability to command."

Williams, who was both the commander of Task Force 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five, had tactical control of the Seventh Fleet's cruisers and destroyers, Carrier Air Wing Five and aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Bennett was the commander in charge of all destroyers assigned to the Seventh Fleet.

In late August, Vice Admiral Joseph P. Aucoin was also relieved of his duties as the head of the Navy's Seventh Fleet due to the two collisions.

South Korean defense officials told Yonhap it has become unclear whether the American supercarrier the USS Theodore Roosevelt will make its way to the Korean Peninsula, as many South Koreans have expected.

Broken Promises? US Supercarrier Might Once Again Bypass Korean Peninsula
https://sputniknews.com/military/201710111058148330-us-supercarrier-bypass-korean-peninsula/

Last Friday, the USS Roosevelt left Naval Base San Diego for deployment to "the @US7thFleet and @US5thFleet areas of operation," the US Pacific Fleet’s Twitter account announced October 10. The Seventh and Fifth Fleets operate within the western Pacific Ocean and around the Middle East, respectively.

The Seventh Fleet’s domain of responsibility is far-reaching, "stretching from the International Date Line to the India-Pakistan border," an official told Yonhap, adding that the area of responsibility spans from "the Kuril Islands in the north" down to Antarctica. A carrier en route to join the Seventh Fleet will not necessarily be deployed anywhere near the Korean Peninsula.

During an early September visit to Seoul, US Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Scott Swift promised to deploy a carrier strike group near the Korean Peninsula to demonstrate Washington’s "ironclad" commitment to South Korea’s security, according to South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo news daily.

"A dual-carrier operation in the region can be an option as well, given the strategic significance of aircraft carriers," Swift said at the time, per Yonhap.

The USS Ronald Reagan, the only forward-deployed US aircraft carrier in the region, is home-ported in Yokosuka, Japan, and serves with the Seventh Fleet.

In April, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the USS Carl Vinson was on its way to either of the seas that bound the Korean Peninsula — the Yellow Sea or Sea of Japan – but US Navy officials in Hawaii were dumbstruck by Mattis’ statement. The Vinson was spotted thousands of miles away transiting the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra about a week after Mattis said the Vinson was “on her way up there [toward the Korean Peninsula.]”

The USS Carl Vinson was supposed to be headed toward the Korean Peninsula last week to project Pentagon power, but instead has recently been seen cruising thousands of miles away.

Heading Where? USS Carl Vinson Spotted Near Indonesia, Not Korean Peninsula
https://sputniknews.com/military/201704181052754728-uss-carl-vinson-indonesia-korea/

US Navy officials speaking from Pearl Harbor and Washington told Defense News, "off the record," that they were awestruck when they saw reports that the Vinson was sailing toward the Korean Peninsula, telling the news outlet, "we’ve made no such statement."

Those reports turned out to be false, as officials denied that the Nimitz and the Ronald Reagan had joined the Vinson, Defense News said. The Reagan is evidently undergoing maintenance at a base near Tokyo, and the Nimitz is floating around Southern California — a far cry from showing up to face down Pyongyang’s saber-rattling in the Sea of Japan or the Yellow Sea.

Something doesn't feel "right" to me and I'm not sure what to make of it? I wonder, if we're seeing pieces of a puzzle coming together for a full head on collision in Syria? Bear with me, while I try to piece together - what is swirling in my head?

Starting with Ukraine:
On September 27th, the same day that Ukrainian President Poroshenko was in Canada, Ukraine’s biggest munitions depot in the village of Kalinovka near the city of Vinnitsa exploded into fire. Although it was claimed to be filled with ammunition, etc. - rumor is that most of the contents in the warehouse had been sold off during the Summer months.

Developments in Israel:
Other than Israeli P M Netanyahu (and his Wife) facing corruption charges, on Sept. 26th, Israel celebrated it's 50th Anniversary of occupation in the West Bank. Prior to that, on September 20th, Israel officially inaugurated the first U.S. military base in Israel. On Oct. 2nd, ammunition, explosive charges and detonators were stolen from an Israeli base in the Golan Heights. Now, two weeks later, another breach at an Israeli base in Upper Galilee. Against US and Israeli efforts, Interpol approved Palestine Membership.

At least 2,000 M16 assault rifle bullets as well as 24 grenades for a single shot M203 launcher were stolen from a military bunker at the army base in the Upper Galilee, RT reported.

The yet unknown thieves allegedly infiltrated the base at around 8:00pm Tuesday. The breach was discovered after an alert was triggered by an alarm on the perimeter fence. It later emerged that four of the locks at the ammunition storehouse had been cut.

This is the second case of ammunition theft in Israel this month. On October 2, anti-tank mines, ammunition for assault rifles, explosive charges and detonators were stolen from a base in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
