The Great American Eclipse

For the first time in 26 years a Total Solar Eclipse will be visible from the United States in August 2017. This edition of the Farmers’ Almanac shares useful details about where, when and how to view this eclipse safely and memorably.

Other stories that will appeal to readers who want to get back in touch with nature include how to raise chickens, ways to tap naturally into your own fountain of youth, a search for Farmers’ Almanac Farmer of the Year, as well as Almanac staples, such as a gardening & fishing calendars, recipes (including last year’s Lemon Recipe Contest winners), life-hacks, and astronomical events that are sure to delight.

“Accurate long-range weather is what people associate with the Farmers’ Almanac, says Geiger. “Yet, from the start, it has grown into a manual of sorts that can help people live healthier lives. It has been a guide to good living no matter what is going in the outside world.

The Great American Eclipse which will occur on August 21, 2017 is on many people’s minds and maybe rightly so. The eclipse passes over not only the Cascadia subduction zone but also Yellowstone National Park and the New Madrid fault line.

This is just one of many videos but it has some interesting news clips from the recent past:

Although we have to wait and see, if the eclipse does influence earthquake zones it is estimated that this one could be as high a 9.2 on the scale.

Federal government agencies are preparing for the possibility of “widespread power outages” across the U.S. as a result of a “black sky” event that could “bring society to its knees”.

An exercise sponsored by FEMA and the U.S. Department of Energy set to take place on August 23 called EarthEX2017 will war game responses to catastrophes such as mega earthquakes, cyber terrorism or high altitude electromagnetic pulse attacks.

The exercise will simulate a “subcontinent-scale, long duration power outage, with cascading failures of all other infrastructures,” according to the official Earth Ex website.

“Black sky events” are defined as, “Catastrophic occurrences caused by man or nature that bring society to its knees.”

Oregon’s Depoe Bay is preparing for the first total eclipse to traverse the continental United States in a century as if a natural disaster was bearing down on the small coastal city.

Oregon coastal city at ‘double ground zero’ braced for eclipse
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-solar-eclipse-usa-preview-idUSKBN1AS0O3

The town, home to 1,500 residents and a single traffic light, is near the spot of land where the total eclipse will first appear on Aug. 21 as it begins cutting a path through 14 states to the Atlantic.

That distinction has raised fears that a tidal wave of visitors will descend on Depoe Bay to get a first glimpse at “totality” a week from Monday.

“Totality” is when the moon passes in front of the sun, blotting out its light and exposing the glowing “corona” around its perimeter. After a little more than two minutes, the phenomenon will end in any given location as the eclipse moves to the east on its coast-to-coast journey.

“We’re a double ground zero,” said Pat O’Connell, who owns a small gallery and gift store facing the rocky sea wall, where thousands are expected to gather when the sky darkens and the eclipse comes in to view.

Given Depoe Bay’s proximity to a major geological fault line, Mayor Barbara Leff says earthquake and tsunami preparation is second nature to the town’s residents.

“This community has been practicing for a major catastrophe for years and years, and a lot of the eclipse preparations in some ways mirror those disaster preparations,” she said. “We’ve been doing what we’re used to doing and hopefully we are all prepared.”

One of the major challenges, Leff says, is anticipating how many people will show up.

The spectacle is the first in 99 years to span the entire continental United States, the world’s third most populous nation. It will also be the first total solar eclipse visible from any of the lower 48 states since 1979.

The city’s handful of hotels and campgrounds have been sold out for months and crowd estimates range from thousands to hundreds of thousands.

The city held its first eclipse meeting four years ago at its tiny two-room City Hall, a former wooden schoolhouse.

Since serious planning began eight months ago, the city has rented portable restrooms, bought a hundred additional garbage cans, and ordered thousands of protective glasses to be distributed free at the local fire station.

It also has handed out leaflets advising residents to stock up on food, medicine, cash and gas, and prepare for traffic gridlock.

The only way into and out of Depoe Bay is Highway 101, which has only one lane in each direction in the area. Even a minor traffic accident can completely stop traffic, said Depoe Bay Fire Chief Joshua Williams.

“Our worst case scenario is everybody on the road, stopping, parking on side of roads and not having enough access for a fire engine or an ambulance to get down the road to somebody’s emergency,” Williams said.

Normally, only one fire station in the area is staffed, but for the four days surrounding the eclipse, firefighters will staff three stations. Williams says he is working with state authorities to keep traffic lanes clear for emergency vehicles.

And it’s not just congestion on the roads the city has to worry about. With what it calls “the world’s smallest harbor,” Depoe Bay is also preparing for hundreds of boaters trying to use the town’s lone boat launch.

The Coast Guard will monitor boating traffic and will have a vessel stationed at the entrance to the harbor, Coast Guard spokesman Andrew Port said. Guardsmen will board boats to make sure boaters are prepared.

At Dockside Charters, Loren Goddard has rented out most of his boats for fishing trips, but there’s still space on a three-hour cruise for visitors with $1,000 hankering to see the eclipse from the ocean.

“You’re first on the scene. It’s going to happen there before it makes landfall,” said Goddard, who plans to be 30 miles offshore fishing for tuna when the time comes.

During a little research into any association of eclipses with major earthquakes, I ran into the following article: https://exemplore.com/astrology/Profiling-the-Total-Solar-Eclipse-of-August . In this article the author presents a statistical analysis of major earthquakes that have occurred within 400 miles of the eclipse ground track over various periods of time post-eclipse. His motivation was to attempt to quantify the risks associated with the upcoming eclipse over the US. The data he used spans the modern era where earthquake magnitudes have been quantified.

35% - 1st likelihood = 1.31-1.69 years after (mid Dec 2018 to mid May 2019).
15% - 2nd likelihood = first 144 days after (21 Aug 2017 to mid Jan 2018 or almost 5 months).
15% - 3rd likelihood = 3.51-4.01 years after (late Feb 2021 to late Aug 2021).
10% - 4th likelihood = 0.4-1.3 years after (mid Jan 2018 to mid Dec 2018).
5% - 5th likelihood = 1.7-3.5 years after (mid May 2019 to late Feb 2021).
5% - 6th likelihood = 4.1-5 years after (late Aug 2021 to late Aug 2022).

Note: The remaining probability of 15% would be the likelihood that no such seismic event will occur within 400 miles (644 km) from the center of the shadow path of the August 2017 eclipse.

The greatest likelihood (35%) is 1.3 to 1.7 years post-eclipse – this is solely based on past observation.

We also know from Dr John Casey’s work that large quakes appear to be correlated with solar minima – the latest one we have entered. [See https://www.sott.net/article/345096-Nuclear-EMP-Solar-EMP-or-something-else for a summary of Casey’s analysis for the New Madrid zone.] Casey’ conclusion for New Madrid is a greater than 80% risk for a major quake between 2017 and 2032.

Combining Casey’s conclusion with that of the above paper, it appears that the risk of a major quake from New Madrid in the next 5 years is very nearly a certainty.

It appears that these two authors are unaware of each other’s work.

I’ve attached the above article as a Word doc for those that prefer to download and print.

If LQB is on to something then I think there may be strong possibility that The Great American Eclipse (August 21, 2017) is an event to watch. For me it is just an "intuitive" type feeling that this could start some of the earth changes that might bring some needed change and cleansing.

It seems that it the effects of the eclipse may be not immediate but are more of a kind of triggering influence and the effects require a certain amount of "time" to show their effects.

I have seen there are others watching this (ordinary everyday people) and they are curious and sense there is something significant about this "Cosmic" cycles.

After all we are becoming aware of the cyclic nature of the universe we are born into and how everything is connected. :)

It's kind of exciting in a way.

Yes, the greatest association/frequency occurs at 1.3-1.7 years (35%) although some occur just days after the eclipse. The tables at the end of the article indicate that the correlation is much greater than random expectation.

One theory is that the moon acts as a lens for neutrinos from the sun which somehow adds instability to faults near the eclipse ground track.

A powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Friday north of an isolated Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, the US Geological Survey said.
