Super speed travel pod start-up gets €600,000 investment

February 16, 2017

Train operator NS and a southern investment fund have pledged €600,000 for an award-winning Delft University of Technology project to develop a futuristic transport pod, reports NU.nl (in Dutch).

The capsule, created by engineering students, won the top prize in a competition organized by American space travel company Space X in January.

The idea is that a capsule for people or goods is propelled through a vacuum tube faster than the speed of an airline. It reached more than 90kph in a 1.2km test run, reports NU.nl, and now some of the university team are taking the idea forward in a start-up venture called HARDT.

This has just won €300,000 in investment from NS’s innovation fund, plus the same again from UNIIQ, an investment body founded by institutions including the universities of Delft and Leiden.

The concept behind the pod came from Elon Musk, director of Tesla and SpaceX, who organized a competition to encourage people to realize his dream.

Hyper-loop is not slowed down by resistance, floats above its rails using magnets to brake and achieve stability, and could potentially travel at 1,000 kph – going from Amsterdam to Rome in two hours.

HARDT chief executive Tim Houter told NU.nl he believes the first usable model could be built in four years, and offering passenger rides within a decade. ‘Technologically speaking, we can go quite fast,’ he said, pointing out that the prototype was developed and built in a year.

But a spokesperson for NS – which has recently been plagued with complaints about overcrowded trains and poor service – has lower expectations, telling NU.nl that the pods won’t replace trains in the next 10 years.

Two paying tourists will make a moon fly-by in 2018 according to a Musk-SpaceX announcement on Monday:

SpaceX to Fly Passengers On Private Trip Around the Moon in 2018

By Calla Cofield, Space.com Staff Writer | February 27, 2017 06:53pm ET

SpaceX will fly two private citizens on a trip around the moon in 2018, the company's founder Elon Musk announced Monday (Feb. 27).

The private spaceflight company will use its Falcon Heavy rocket to send the two paying passengers into space aboard one of the company's Dragon spacecraft. The two private citizens, who have not yet been named, approached SpaceX about taking a trip around the moon, and have "already paid a significant deposit" for the cost of the mission, according to a statement from the company. The names of the two individuals will be announced later, pending the result of initial health tests to ensure their fitness for the mission, the statement said.

"Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration," SpaceX representatives said in the statement.

The two passengers will be the only people on board what is expected to be about a week long trip around the moon, according to Musk, who spoke with reporters during a phone conference today.

"This would be a long loop around the moon … It would skim the surface of the moon, go quite a bit further out into deep space and then loop back to Earth," Musk said during the teleconference. "So I'm guessing, distance-wise, maybe [300,000] or 400,000 miles [about 500,000 to 650,000 kilometers]."

Fast forward to the future: super-speed transport testing lab opens

June 1, 2017

Could he be ‘the Dutch Elon Musk’? Tim Houter, part of a team that won a SpaceX contest to develop super-speed hyperloop transport is setting up a full-scale testing lab, reports the Volkskrant [behind paywall].

The technology involves a shuttle running through a tube where there is little or no air, so friction is minimized and a journey from Amsterdam to Paris could – theoretically – take just 30 minutes.

In January a team of engineering students from Delft University of Technology won top prize in a competition inspired by Tesla’s Musk to design a futuristic type of transport.

Now Houter, from that team, has co-founded Hardt Global Mobility to commercialize their technology. On Thursday he opened a testing centre for the technology, with the help of investment from TU Delft, NS railways and construction company BAM.

‘In this facility we will test all systems that don’t require high speeds,’ Houter told Reuters. ‘So think about the levitation system, but also the propulsion system. All the safety systems will be tested in this low-speed but [in a] full-scale testing facility.’

News provided by Hyperloop One 04:00 ET

AMSTERDAM, June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Executives from Hyperloop One joined European dignitaries and policymakers today at its Vision for Europe summit to discuss transforming transportation across the continent with Hyperloop. Hyperloop One's vision for Europe creates economic unification to provide better options for people living outside of economic centers and large cities; increases capacity of strategic corridors sustainably to develop city-to-city connections within commuting range, enabling a thriving, greener mega-region; and offers next generation logistics to facilitate fast, reliable and clean movement of goods.

With Hyperloop One, passengers and cargo are loaded into a pod and accelerated gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The pod quickly lifts above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag. It is designed for higher energy efficiency per passenger mile than traditional modes of transport, curbing emissions and fuel consumption. By the end of 2017, Hyperloop One will have a team of 500 employees dedicated to bringing the technology to life.

Nine potential European routes were unveiled for the Hyperloop One Global Challenge at the event. The proposed routes will connect over 75 million people in 44 cities, spanning 5,000 kilometers. They were presented as part of the all-day summit that included a panel discussion around the economic advantages of Hyperloop and a keynote address from Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, Melanie Schultz van Haegen.

"Europe embraces new ideas in transportation like no other region in the world and is uniquely positioned to take the next great leap in transportation with Hyperloop One," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and Executive Chairman of Hyperloop One. "Our vision is to, one day, connect all of Europe with our Hyperloop One system, networking the entire continent."

"For Europe, Hyperloop One technology is complementary to existing highways, rails, ports and overall infrastructure," said Rob Lloyd, Chief Executive Officer of Hyperloop One. "Hyperloop One will offer Europe's transport grid with an option that is more efficient, greener, on-demand and faster. We've seen a lot of interest here, and we look forward to creating a partnership to enhance the continent's transport infrastructure."

"Hyperloop One is the only company in the world that has built a fully functioning Hyperloop system test track," said Hyperloop One co-founder and President of Engineering Josh Giegel. "For the last two years, our team of nearly 200 engineers, technicians and fabricators developed our technology and transformed a stretch of desert in the U.S. into a working test track that proves we can build a Hyperloop system anywhere in the world. We're looking forward to showcasing our technology and believe that Europe is the perfect region for one of the world's first Hyperloop systems."

The Hyperloop One Global Challenge

The Hyperloop One Global Challenge kicked off in May 2016 as an open call to individuals, universities, companies and governments to develop comprehensive proposals for deploying Hyperloop One's transport technology in their region. 9 European proposals have advanced to the semi-final round of the Hyperloop One Global Challenge of more than 2,600 participants' initial submissions.

Proposed routes would greatly reduce passenger and cargo transport times across some of the continent's most heavily trafficked regions. Hyperloop One's panel of experts in transportation, technology, economics and innovation are considering the following route proposals:

ROUTE NAME ROUTE LENGTH

Corsica-Sardinia 451 km

Estonia-Finland 90 km

Germany 1,991 km

Poland 415 km

Spain-Morocco 629 km

The Netherlands 428 km

UK-North-South
Connector 666 km

UK-Northern Arc 545 km

UK- Scotland-Wales 1,060 km

The global challenge expert panel comprises: Peter Diamandis, Founder and Executive Chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation; Bassam Mansour, International Railway Industry Advisor and Director of Rail Systems at HSS Engineers; Clive Burrows, Group Engineering Director for FirstGroup; Ulla Tapaninen, Senior Specialist in Economic Development for the City of Helsinki and adjunct professor at University of Turku.

Vision for Europe Conference

In addition to new details on the European routes, the event in Amsterdam featured a roundtable of speakers discussing the future of transportation that included former Mayor of London's Deputy Manager for Transport, Isabel Dedring; Partner Norton Rose Fulbright and global head of Financial Investors Group, Chris Brown; and the CEO of Finland Chamber of Commerce and Secretary General of European Business Leaders' Convention, Risto Penttilä.

Sure, let's build a hyperloop. Since every big government project doesn't end in a total disaster. Most western governments are to ponerized and to corrupt to take on projects like that. Those days are long past, or so it seems.

Now Elon Musk is starting a streaming music activity, the synergy with other activities developed by Musk is elusive to me, but here it is:

Tesla's Response To Amazon Foods: A Streaming Music Service

by Tyler Durden

Not to be outdone by Jeff Bezos' "out of the box thinking", Elon Musk has turned the amplifier of fast money to '11'...

Car-maker, tech stock, solar company... and now music streaming service.

Oh the genius of Elon Musk... "you just don't get it"

As ReCode reports, put this one in the “You can do that, but why would you want to do that?” file:
Tesla is talking to the music industry about creating its own streaming music service.

Music industry sources say the carmaker has had talks with all of the major labels about licensing a proprietary music service that would come bundled with its cars, which already come equipped with a high-tech dashboard and internet connectivity.

Label sources aren’t clear about the full scope of Tesla’s ambitions, but believe it is interested in offering multiple tiers of service, starting with a Pandora-like web radio offering.

The bigger question: Why doesn’t Tesla simply integrate existing services, like Spotify or Apple Music, into all of its cars from the start — especially since Tesla already does a deal with Spotify for Teslas sold outside the U.S.?

“We believe it’s important to have an exceptional in-car experience so our customers can listen to the music they want from whatever source they choose,” a Tesla spokesperson said.

“Our goal is to simply achieve maximum happiness for our customers.”

Of course shareholders can see only the upside (even though the stock did drop ever so slightly on this headline) even if Musk just found another way to burn more money.

I don't know what to make of Elon Musk, other than, I consider him a bit eccentric and maybe border-line-genius or just a great accomplished manipulator? One thing that I have noticed, he doesn't seem to have a problem, with getting investment sponsors, to back his projects? Is he a front man - for elite interests?

There's some articles making the rounds in the news about his Father:

Errol Musk, the estranged father of billionaire Tesla co-founder Elon Musk, has said the child he had with his stepdaughter 42-years his junior was "God's plan."

Elon Musk's Father Errol Says Child With Stepdaughter Was 'God's Plan' 26.03.2018
https://www.yahoo.com/news/elon-musk-apos-father-errol-100307280.html

The 72-year-old South African entrepreneurial engineer and former emerald dealer has a 10-month-old child with Jana Bezuidenhout, his 30-year-old stepdaughter. Errol met Bezuidenhout, the daughter of his second wife Heide, when she was four.

Errol described their 10-month-old child Elliot Rush as "exquisite" in an interview with The Sunday Times.

Bezuidenhout contacted Errol nearly two years ago after she split from her boyfriend, prompting him to offer his support. Errol told the newspaper that he does not see Bezuidenhout as a daughter, as she was raised away from him for long periods of time.

“We were lonely, lost people. One thing led to another—you can call it God’s plan or nature’s plan,” he told The Sunday Times. Two months later, she revealed she was pregnant. A paternity test later confirmed the child was his. While Errol supports the mother and child, they do not live together.

“Of course I love him dearly, even though it wasn’t planned,” Errol told Mail Online.

Errol, who is single and has four ex-wives, said he can “hardly remember” Heide and wouldn’t recognize her in the street. The pair were married for 18 years and share two children, and reportedly both live in South Africa's Western Cape province.

He suggested the birth has driven a wedge between his other family members, but denied it was the cause of “anger” between him and his SpaceX founder son Elon.

Errol described the moment when he revealed the birth to his daughter Alexandra "Ali" Musk: “She said I was insane, mentally ill. She told the others and they went berserk.”

Errol divorced Elon’s mother, the Canadian model and dietitian Maye Musk, when he was 10-years-old.

During an interview with Rolling Stone last year, Musk broke down in tears as he recalled his relationship with his father. He said that his father was a “brilliant engineer” but a “terrible human being. My dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil,” he said.

Elon said his father was guilty of “almost every crime you can possibly think of” and said one thing he had done was "so terrible, you can’t believe it," but did not go into further detail.

Errol Musk and Jana Bezuidenhout did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Delft University students have launched their new experimental capsule for the hyperloop super fast transport system which will be put through its paces in an international competition in the US on 22 July.

The Atlas 01 is a half-size pod which will race through the experimental hyperloop system at the SpaceX site in California. The circuit is around one mile long.

Space X is an aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company owned by Elon Musk.

The hyperloop is a futuristic passenger and freight transportation that propels a pod-like vehicle through a near-vacuum tube at more than airline speed.

Last year, Delft won the overall prize, based on the points given for design and safety as well as for speed. This year, speed is the only criteria for winning the competition.

SpaceX Wins $130 Million Military Launch Contract for Falcon Heavy Rocket
June 24, 2018 08:25am ET
WASHINGTON — SpaceX has won its first big-ticket classified military launch contract for the Falcon Heavy rocket. The Air Force awarded SpaceX a $130 million contract for the launch of Air Force Space Command (AFSPC)-52 satellite.

The Falcon Heavy beat United Launch Alliance's Delta 4 in a competition under the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program. The launch will take place at Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

The Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles announced the contract award on Thursday. SMC Commander Lt. Gen. John Thompson said this was "another opportunity to foster competition on the EELV program in an effort to reduce launch costs while maintaining assured access to space." [SpaceX's Falcon Rocket Evolution in Pictures]

This is the fifth competitive procurement under the current Phase 1A of the EELV program since SpaceX entered the market to challenge ULA. The $130 million award for the Falcon Heavy launch is considerably lower than the average $350 million price tag for Delta 4 launches.

AFSPC-52 is a classified mission projected to launch in late Fiscal Year 2020.

SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said in a statement that the company is “honored by the Air Force’s selection of Falcon Heavy to launch the competitively-awarded AFSPC-52 mission.” She said the contract award indicates the military’s “trust and confidence” in the company.

Falcon Heavy also in on track to launch the U.S. Air Force’s STP-2 technology demonstration mission, currently scheduled for October.

The Air Force released the solicitation of the AFSPC-52 mission September 28 and proposals were due October 30.

During a meeting with reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday, Lt. Gen. Arnold Bunch Jr., the military deputy for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, said he was confident that the cost of military launches will continue on a downward path.

"You have to watch what we’ve done. We’ve saved money over time," Bunch said. "That's driven some by what we’re doing with competition and also by the commercial demand signal. The two are coupled together."

Elon Musk’s idea of using a specially designed mini-sub to salvage children trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand was turned down as the pod proved too big to navigate the miles-long network of waterlogged tunnels.

Elon Musk 'Can Stick His Submarine Where It Hurts' - British Rescuer

A British diver who helped rescue a schoolboy football team from a flooded cave in Thailand has dismissed Elon Musk’s offer to use a mini-sub of his own design to help the mission as a “PR stunt.”

Vernon Unsworth said the six-foot submersible that the SpaceX boss invented and handed to the rescue team “had absolutely no chance of working” because Musk had no idea what the cave passage was like, CNN reported.

Unsworth said that the five foot six long rigid mini-sub, would not be able to navigate the narrow twists and turns of the Tham Luang cave the 12 children and their coach were stranded in.

“He can stick his submarine where it hurts. It wouldn’t have made the first 50 meters into the cave from the dive start point. Just a PR stunt,” he added.

Elon Musk travelled to the Tham Luang caverns earlier this week and presented the “kid sized” vessel, which he said could help free the team marooned inside the flooded tunnels.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO earlier said that he would try to help with the rescue operation and refashioned part of a Falcon 9 rocket into an underwater escape capsule for the children.

But according to media reports, Musk was “politely” told that the mini-submarine would not be of use.

“Although his technology is good and sophisticated it’s not practical for this mission,” Narongsak Osatanakorn, head of the command center overseeing the rescue, told reporters.

Musk tweeted that the mini-sub was “ready if needed” and would be left at the cave system as it “may be useful in the future.”

The last four team members and their coach were brought out of the Tham Luang cave, near the border with Myanmar, on Tuesday.

The 12 boys, aged 11 to 16, were stranded in the cave on June 23rd before heavy rainfall caused floods that blocked their exit.

They were trapped for 18 days, and one former Thai Navy SEAL died trying to exit the cave after delivering emergency oxygen.

The founder of Tesla and Space X has delivered the rescue device he promised to develop with his companies, and entered the flooded cave system where a local teenage football team has been trapped for more than two weeks. Meanwhile, the rescue mission has entered its third stage; five await rescuers.

US tech tycoon Elon Musk has shared a series of posts on social media from the cave system in northern Thailand where teenagers from the local team Wild Boar and their coach await rescue. The entrepreneur brought a kid-size capsule that his company developed for the rescue operation, named after the unfortunate squad.

15.07.2018 - Elon Musk Calls Thai Cave Rescuer 'Pedo Guy' in Twitter Meltdow
Elon Musk Calls Thai Cave Rescuer ‘Pedo Guy’ in Twitter Meltdown

Previously, a British diver who helped rescue a schoolboy football team from a flooded cave in Thailand dismissed Elon Musk’s efforts to assist in the task by saying that his inventions were of no use to the rescue team.

Musk had been irked by a CNN report that revealed British caver Vern Unsworth, who lives in Chiang Rai, where the Tham Luang cave network is located, called Musk's offer to build a child-size sub a "PR stunt" with "no chance of working."

Musk responded by verbally attacking the British expert on Twitter, first daring him to prove that his mini-submarine wouldn't have been useful in rescuing the boys from the flooded cave in Thailand and then claiming that he would prove him wrong himself. The inventor and billionaire said it was "sus" (suspect or shady) that a British man would choose to live in Thailand, and concluded by calling the diver a "pedo guy."

"You know what, don't bother showing the video. We will make one of the mini-sub/pod going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it," read the July 15 tweet, which was deleted shortly after this story was published, but which was captured by many.

Unsworth had said the mini-submarine that the Tesla CEO had brought to Thailand wouldn't make it through the narrow twists of the caves. He also advised Musk to stick his submarine "where it hurts.

CNN described Unsworth's role as crucial as he calls the cave network his "second home" and has been exploring it for six years. He spent the entire 17-day ordeal at the caves, working to free the boys.

Musk traveled to the Tham Luang caverns earlier this week and presented his "kid sized" vessel, made from a refashioned part of a Falcon 9 rocket. However, according to media reports, Musk's offer was "politely" declined by the rescuers.

Twitter was not amused.

The 12 boys and their coach became trapped deep in the cave network June 23, after rising water blocked their exit. They were discovered alive July 2, and frantic efforts began to extract them from the cave before their air ran out. A former Thai Navy SEAL, Saman Gunan, died July 6 when his own oxygen ran out after he delivered oxygen to the boys. The 12 boys and their coach were all freed from the cave by July 10. They remain in hospital, but are expected to be discharged next week, according to new reports.

From Zero to Hero: As Thailand Celebrates Cave Rescue, Truth Emerges About Coach

Twelve boys who were rescued from a cave complex in a remote corner of Thailand have been reunited with their families. Sputnik looks at the role of their coach, who was originally blamed on social media for leading them into the caves.

It has since emerged the boys actually entered the caves on their own and Ekkapol Chantawong, 25, went in to look for them and then managed to keep up their spirits during their 17-day ordeal.

This is Ekkapol Chantawong a former Buddhist Monk and the coach of the Thai boys. He kept the boys calm through meditation and alive by giving up his own rations, yet he has been vilified by so many around the world.pic.twitter.com/CQeZUCKv5A

The fate of the boys, who were from a team known as the Wild Boars, has captured the world's attention and there are already plans to make a Hollywood movie about their ordeal.

On June 23 heavy rain prevented the group from leaving the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province and there were fears the boys would either drown or starve to death.

Finally Found Alive By British Divers

They were found alive by two British divers on July 2 — two miles inside the cave complex — and preparations were made to rescue them using specially trained divers.

Tragedy struck on July 6 when Saman Kunan, a former sergeant in the Thai Navy, died after his oxygen ran out underwater.

But on Tuesday, July 10, the operation to rescue them was successfully completed by Thai Royal Navy Seals.

Originally many people on social media around the world assumed Coach Ek, as he is known, had been responsible for getting the boys into such a predicament.

That was the narrative which the parents believed but on July 7 they wrote a letter to Coach Ek which was given to the divers who were trying to arrange a rescue.

Coach Apologized To Parents

"From all the parents, please take care of all the children. Don't blame yourself," it said.

He wrote a note apologizing to the parents and promising to take "the very best care of the kids."

Only now has it emerged that the boys went into the caves on their own and he went in to look for them and managed to keep them alive while awaiting rescue.

It has also emerged that Coach Ek is a stateless person — one of 480,000 the UNHCR says are living in Thailand.

Many are from nomadic hill tribes and other ethnic groups who have for centuries lived around Mae Sai, the heart of the "Golden Triangle" — an area of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and China which is often used to produce opium, the raw material for heroin.

The rescue of the Wild Boars squad has been greeted with joy around the world.

Several World Cup footballers have mentioned it on social media.

Wild Boars To Come To World Cup Final?

Manchester United star Paul Pogba dedicated France's semi-final win against Belgium to the youngsters.

England defender Kyle Walker offered to send the Wild Boars some football shirts.

There was even talk the Wild Boars would be special guests at the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday, July 15.

But FIFA said the boys were recovering in hospital and would not be well enough to travel to Moscow.

"FIFA's priority remains the health of everyone involved in the operation and we will look into finding a new opportunity to invite the boys to a FIFA event to share with them a moment of communion and celebration," a spokesman
