Every day we're exposed to a multitude of man-made chemicals in the food we eat, the air we breathe and the products we clean our homes and wash our bodies with. For some people, like journalist Jane Little, the burden can be almost too much to bear. Certain chemicals trigger extreme physical reactions, leaving her ill and exhausted for days at a time. It's a debilitating condition for her and many thousands of fellow sufferers.

Jane suffered her first extreme reaction whilst staying on the family farm in Cumbria. Exposed, alongside her father, to the cocktail of disinfectants used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001, she believes this could be the origin of her condition.

4:10 After that one big exposure we were both left reacting to all sorts of low dose man-made chemicals which haven't been a problem for us before. As my mom Molly explains. - As a result of that exposure, you've both become a lot more chemically sensitive.

Living in a Van to Escape Multiple Chemical Sensitivities & Mold (2018)
Today we meet Madison who suffers from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and because of that has had to escape and live in her car to be away from the incessant chemicals that infect our lives. I've known many people who had to abandon their "normal" lives because their bodies had an extreme and abnormal reaction to the many chemicals surrounding us--they would become unbearably sick and the only solution was to go where there was an absolute minimum of chemicals around them. For Madison, that's meant living in her car in the desert, as far from "civilization as possible!

While most of us will not suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, I'm certain all of us are suffering from the incredibly unhealthy physical, mental and emotional environment we live our lives in. I believe that everyone will benefit from escaping the toxic world around us and finding sanctuary in the purity of nature, free of the many noxious poisons that are the unintended consequences of modern life.

The World's Scent / L'Odeur du Monde (A bilingual documentary) [2012]
Most people need to see and touch something to be sure that it exists and is real. Even though we cannot do that with smells and chemicals, we are indeed surrounded by them all the time. We are so used to them that we almost never pay attention to their constant presence. However, there are some people whose lives revolve around these invisible elements.

The World's Scent examines two of these types of people with almost opposite perspectives on perfumes and fragrances: a perfumer who is impassioned by creating fragrances and a sufferer of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity syndrome who is forced to survive in a world of chemicals.

The world of perfumes is a small, exclusive one and MCS sufferers avoid public places so most people are not aware of their existence. These two types of people are both virtually invisible, like perfumes. The World's Scent explores the unknown lives of both to demonstrate that something unremarkable for most of us can be the focus of some people's existences.
