Explosion shreds East Village restaurant
An explosion rocked the East Village Thursday afternoon.

The blast occured at 125 2nd Ave. near E. 7th St. about 3:20 p.m., officials said.

Panicked neighbors tweeted photos showing smoke pouring from the building, which houses a boutique called Enz’s with apartments above.

An FDNY spokesman said the 911 call was for a partial building collapse.

I drive down that avenue whenever I make my way to Chinatown in NYC. That part of town (7th Street & 2nd Ave) is very hip and vibrant. Kind of edgy and offbeat. One of my daughters live 8 blocks away.

When I saw this, what immediately came to mind was that building explosion in Harlem, NYC. Just about a year ago on March 12, 2014. That building was obliterated and collapsed. The C's made reference to earth's "out-gassing" in that case.

This one may possibly be similar. The initial report was workers changing gas lines in a restaurant. But maybe it too was "out-gassing." But this is just pure speculation of course.

yes, it is very possible, knowing all the changes that are happening all over the big blue marble, but TPB will use it as a set up for something else. :pinocchio:

Now that was exactly what i thought too. However major outgassing event is still ahead of us according to the C's.

Here's something from another part of this BBM.

Taiwan, July 2014. The official explanation was busted gas line. But another possibility is it might be an example of what "outgassing" might look like--in an urban environment. The car occupants are speaking Mandarin. Needless to say, they were scared and bewildered.

I spoke with a dear friend who lives near here and has been in the neighborhood for over 20 years and she was horrified. Having been in NY a few years ago and stayed in an older hotel...I've wondered about the age of some of these buildings and how up to code they may or may not be.

I was near Union Square when it all went down. Major parts of downtown were covered in smoke and it smelt like bonfires and melting plastic when I went outside. This is also the second one to occur in the last month. Another one occurred by me on 57th st btwn 11th and the west side highway, on toward the end of Feb. Official explanation is that they were inappropriately deconstructing the building's interior, but specifics are still lacking. Here's a link to that story: _http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150225/hells-kitchen-clinton/part-of-57th-street-building-collapses-fdny-says

"Old" buildings only have to meet the building codes at the time they were constructed. Now if you were to renovate that building, the work you do would have to meet current building codes and if the renovation work was substantial enough, then the code makes you update the whole building. The other option would be if the building is deemed unsafe by the building/fire inspectors then you have to address their specific issues.

What strikes me, if it were some type of explosion, is the lack of debris in the street, at least from the pictures I've seen.
