GlaxoSmithKline has developed and launched Varilrix, a preparation of live, attenuated Oka-strain varicella zoster virus, for immunization against varicella zoster infections. By the end of 1998, Varilrix was available in a few European countries and in India By 2001, the vaccine was also available in Brazil and Hong Kong.

Varicella zoster virus causes an acute infection that affects most children globally, but the age of infection can be greater in residents of tropical areas. It has generally been considered a mild disease, although there are accumulating data to show that it can cause significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised children and
adults. Oka-strain live attenuated varicella vaccines were developed in the 1970s. Varilrix developed by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals (Rixensart, Belgium), is one of the vaccines produced and marketed in over 80 countries.
Similar to the other Oka-strain vaccines, Varilrix is safe, immunogenic and efficacious in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent children and adults.

Russia probes "illegal" tests of Glaxo vaccines
By Reuters

By Olesya Dmitracova
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian prosecutors are investigating a local hospital on suspicions it illegally tested vaccines made by GlaxoSmithKline Plc on toddlers, making them ill and hampering their development.
Europe's biggest drugmaker denied the claims and said there was no evidence of adverse events or misconduct in the way the study had been carried out.
Glaxo vaccines were tested on more than 100 children between one and two years of age at the hospital in Volgograd after Russian health authorities approved the trials in 2005. But prosecutors claim parents were not properly informed and they thought these were routine vaccinations.
According to the prosecutors, Glaxo paid the clinic in southwestern Russia $50,000 to conduct the trials, which made some children ill. 'According to the contract, only healthy children can take part in this experiment,' said a spokeswoman for the Volgograd region prosecutors, Lydia Sergeyeva.
'In this case all children were sent for trials, healthy or unhealthy, and many of them had been diagnosed with diseases. They had no right to put children with health problems through these clinical tests because ... it can lead to a deterioration in the child's condition, as happened with one girl for instance.'
Sergeyeva told Reuters of a 2-1/2-year-old girl whose neurological illness progressed sharply after she was vaccinated. The girl can hardly speak and shows other signs of arrested development, she said.
Glaxo said the tests were part of a wider clinical trial programme involving 5,700 children across Europe, including around 1,000 in Russia.
The project is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of different vaccines against varicella, or chickenpox, and involves Glaxo vaccines that are already approved for use.
A company spokeswoman said its own internal audit showed informed consent had been given by all parents and doctors involved in the trial had reported no signs of adverse effects.
'GlaxoSmithKline is extremely concerned about unsubstantiated and untrue allegations circulating related to the clinical trial in Russia,' she said.
The prosecutors allege the clinic had no right to conduct the tests as it was not a state clinic.
When asked why the tests were nonetheless allowed in the Volgograd hospital, Sergeyeva said it was a question for the authorities who granted the permission.
A regional court ruled last month that the vaccinations should stop but Sergeyeva said the hospital promised to appeal. If no appeal is made, all future tests of the vaccines in the clinic will be banned as of next week.

A routine visit of a children's polyclinic had frightening consequences for Vika Geraskina. One year ago the one-and-a-half-year-old native of the Volgograd area has ceased to talk after being submitted to varicella (chicken pox) vaccination which had been made to the girl in a local railway polyclinic, using a ‘high quality imported’ vaccine. The girl received a Varilrix shot, the Belgian vaccine which has already been in troubles in Europe and USA and not licensed for use in Russia.
According to Vika’s grandmother, having noticed complications after an injection, she had addressed tp a local polyclinic where a shot had been made, but there she had been assured that complications after vaccination are a usual business. However speech has not returned to the girl, and parents have brought a legal action against doctors.

The Office of Public Prosecutor became interested in that legal case. As a result of the investigation which continued for over one year, the head physician of the polyclinic and the Belgian pharmacists who have paid for illegal tests of the vaccines in Russia have been recognized culprits. Vika Geraskina is just one of the victims of medical experiment in which several dozens children have been used as guinea pigs for GlaxoSmithKline vaccine illegal clinical trials.

According to the contract between Otdelenchesky clinical hospital Volgograd-1 and Glaxo Smith Klein Trading Corp., representing the Belgian firm Glaxo Smith Kline Biologicals, physicians have undertaken to carry out clinical researches of weakened vaccine Varilrix against a chicken pox and vaccine Priorix-Tetra against measles, an epidemic parotite, rubella and varicella. Clinical trials have been conducted on more than on hundred children in the age from one to two years. The ground basis for carrying out of clincal studies had been the sanction of Committee on Ethics of Federal Committee of Quality Control of the Medical Products, approved despite a ban on any studies of new drugs on minors.

Parents have not been informed about participation of their children in experiment; it had been suggested to them to vaccinate their kids free of charge with imported vaccine received as the humanitarian help. As vaccination was done only in railway hospital, authorities paid for a taxi. Thus local pediatricians believed that they were sending small patients on a usual vaccination.

Recently in the USA grandiose scandal had been broken when after illegal injection of Varilrix nervous system of children from community ward children home had been impaired. Criminal case against the manufacturer of the vaccine is underway in Italy. Official clinical trials of the vaccine in Russia have not been conducted yet, and the head physician of the Volgograd polyclinic has agreed to correct this blank for $50 000. Now he and his assistants are waiting a sentence on part. 2 article 171 criminal code of the Russian Federation. Studies of the vaccine have been stopped.

The surplus mercury-laced vaccines go overseas. Vyshnevskaia-Rostropovich Foundation appears to be one of the avenues of unloading such vaccines, bringing them to Russia and other former soviet republics. People report mass HepB boosters administered in schools in big cities, often without parental consent.
Vyshnevskaia and Rostropovich are worldwide recognized opera voice and violoncello musicians, respectively. They also HELP russian kids to compromise their immune systems, be it done deliberately or not. Geezz!

Chickenpox is a common childhood disease (highly contagious) but without any secondary effects. Both of my children had it with minor inconveniences like itching. AND you don't need vaccines for it !! My mother remembers when I and my 2 siblings had it all at once. My father, who was a doctor of internal medicine, did not believe in vaccinations. We were not vaccinated for anything except smallpox.

Now the trend in the industry is to offshore initial clinical tests to countries like India where they had decent infrastructure and the laws are not existent or not enforced and people are preoccupied with every day life issues. Cheap Labour and Cheap Goats .
