The Living Force
There is so much "wrong" with this situation? For one, Manning should have never been jailed!

After being placed in solitary confinement last month for attempting to end her life in July, whistleblower Chelsea Manning attempted suicide a second time.

In October Chelsea Manning Attempted Suicide for a Second Time
https://sputniknews.com/us/201611051047087065-chelsea-manning-attempted-suicide-second-time/

Manning, 28, faced a disciplinary board in September, over her initial suicide attempt, and was sentenced to spend two weeks in solitary confinement. In a statement posted to her support network’s website, Manning disclosed on Friday that she had made a second attempt to take her life October 4, during her first night in solitary.

Following the attempt, Manning was moved into an observation unit called Alpha Tier and placed on suicide watch. She was reportedly kept in solitary in this unit as well. The four-page statement details a strange sequence of events she claims happened while she was in the Alpha unit.

On the night of Oct. 10, her statement says, four people impersonating guards conducted an hours long attack on the prison, during which she heard sounds indicating that the attackers were shooting and torturing her cell block’s actual guards,” the New York Times reports. “These attackers tried to induce Ms. Manning to escape, the statement says, but she did not cooperate. Instead, as the night unfolded, she hid in the corner of her cell, telling the imposters she knew they were not actual guards, it said.”

The next morning, Manning says, everything had returned to normal other than several correctional specialists were deep cleaning the entirety of Alpha Tier with Pine Sol and bleach.”

The Army denied that the reported events occurred.

Manning’s support network filed a complaint on her behalf with the Office of the Intelligence Community Inspector General, claiming that what Manning witnessed was actually an intelligence operation designed to torment her and entrap her into committing a crime.

The group is asking the office to “document and investigate allegations of malicious activities with an intent to psychologically harm, abusive discretion by intelligence community officials, and potential criminal actions by intelligence community personnel.”

Manning has been returned to the general prison population, though she may face additional sentencing for her second suicide attempt.

Manning is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence at Leavenworth Prison in Kansas, for leaking classified government and military documents to Wikileaks, to show the American public the “true cost of war.” She was found guilty of violating the Espionage Act.

“The documents she disclosed, which made her a hero to open-government activists, included diplomatic cables from American embassies around the world, incident logs from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, intelligence dossiers about Guantánamo Bay detainees and a video of a helicopter airstrike in Baghdad in which two Reuters journalists were killed. WikiLeaks made them public, working with various news organizations, including The Times,” the New York Times reported.

In early September, Manning began a hunger strike, which she ended after the US military agreed to allow her treatment for gender dysmorphia.

This medical care is absolutely vital for Chelsea as it is for so many transgender people—in and out of prison— who are systemically denied treatment solely because they are transgender," Chase Strangio, an ACLU staff attorney who represents Manning, said in a statement at the time.

In an ACLU press release, Fight for the Future campaign director Evan Greer said, "The US government’s treatment of Chelsea is a travesty. Those in charge should know that the whole world is watching, and we won’t stand idly by while this administration continues to harass and abuse Chelsea Manning."

The WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea (Bradley) Manning wrote a petition to US President Barack Obama, asking for a commutation of the court-martial sentence to time served.

Whistleblower Chelsea Manning Petitions Obama for Release From Prison
https://sputniknews.com/us/201611141047406014-wikileaks-manning-obama/

In the supporting paper, Manning’s lawyers asked Obama to give her a second chance, adding that her mental and emotional state significantly deteriorated due to "torturous conditions" and resulted in two attempted suicides.

"I am not asking for a pardon of my conviction… I understand that the various collateral consequences of the court-martial conviction will stay on my record forever. The sole relief I am asking for is to be released from military prison after serving six years of confinement as a person who did not intend to harm the interests of the United States or harm any service members," the petition, provided by Manning's lawyer to The New York Times, read.

Manning’s petition was also accompanied by letters of support from Daniel Ellsberg, famous for leaking a number of secret papers to journalists during the Vietnam War, former military commissions chief prosecutor Morris Davis, and journalist Glenn Greenwald.

On November 11, WikiLeaks urged the outgoing US President Barack Obama not to miss "political moment" to pardon former US Army private Manning and whistleblower Edward Snowden before Donald Trump takes office.

The US authorities sentenced Manning in 2013 for violating the Espionage Act by sending some 700,000 classified military documents to WikiLeaks. She is serving the 35-years sentence at the Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas.

On September 3, 2013, Manning's lawyer applied for a presidential pardon for his client, claiming he did not seek to harm the US national interests. In April 2014, the Kansas District Court approved a petition from Manning for a legal name change. In February 2015, it was reported that Manning became the first US army soldier to receive hormone replacement therapy.

Chelsea Manning, the whistleblower who leaked documents to WikiLeaks on US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was released from military prison on Wednesday. Her 35-year sentence for espionage was commuted by President Barack Obama after seven years served.
A media spokesperson for the Fort Leavenworth military prison confirmed to RT that Manning was released in the early hours of Wednesday morning around 2am. The spokesperson did not comment further as per regular inmate release policy.

A fundraising page set up by friends and family in February to assist Manning after her release has raised $150,000. The money accumulated will go directly to Manning’s rent, utilities, health care, clothing and other living expenses for the first year after she is released, according to the campaign.

Manning, an Army intelligence analyst, was convicted under the Espionage Act in 2013 after admitting guilt, but not wrongdoing, in handing over documents that became known as the Iraq War Logs and the Afghan War Diary to WikiLeaks in 2010.

She was sentenced to loss of rank and forfeiture of all pay.

Manning gave WikiLeaks some 482,832 Army reports and 251,287 diplomatic cables, after watching a 2007 video of US helicopter crews indiscriminately killing Iraqi civilians, which was dubbed ‘Collateral Murder.’

Known as Bradley Manning at the time of her arrest, the whistleblower revealed after the conviction that she identified as a woman and requested to be called Chelsea.

The Army has continued to officially consider Manning male, and has kept her in the men’s section of the US Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Manning reportedly attempted suicide twice in 2016.

President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s sentence on January 17, three days before he left the White House, setting a release date of May 17. A month earlier, the petition to pardon Manning had received more than 100,000 signatures.

Another petition, calling for the pardon of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, had attracted more than 1.1 million signatures from 110 countries. Though Obama ignored it, Snowden welcomed the news of Manning’s impending release.

The Washington establishment was furious, however, denouncing the commutation as a “slap in the face,”with hawkish GOP Senators Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), John McCain (R-Arizona) and Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) leading the charge.

Though President Donald Trump did not comment on Obama’s decision to commute Manning’s sentence, he called the whistleblower an “ungrateful traitor” after her January 25 opinion piece that criticized Obama for weak leadership.

In the article, published by The Guardian, Manning had written that Obama had “very few permanent accomplishments” and took offense that the former president took too long to acknowledge the “queer community”after the June 2016 terrorist attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

“What we need is a strong unapologetic progressive to lead us,” Manning wrote, addressing Trump’s criticism on Twitter with “OK? Whatevs.”

Until Manning’s appeal of her court martial conviction is resolved, the whistleblower will remain a member of the US military. While she is on suspension without pay, she will still have access to commissaries and military medical care, under which she is eligible for gender reassignment surgery.

“Private Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review,” according to a US Army spokesperson quoted by USA Today.

Being dishonorably discharged, as per the terms of the conviction, would strip Manning of those benefits, however.

I do wonder what life lies ahead of Chelsea though. Snowden made a career out of online speeches and appearances, maybe Chelsea will have similar opportunities.

Yeah. My main concern is whether Chelsea has been subjected to torture or mind control tactics, as to turn her into another gatekeeper to sway and vector the activists who (rightly) cherish her act of bravery leaking the attack footage to Wikileaks. Just another onion layer to peel back I guess.

A week after Chelsea Manning published her first post-prison Instagram posts, the recently released US Army whistleblower announced she will give her first TV interview on ABC News in June.

Unshackled: A Free Chelsea Manning Will Give First TV Interview to ABC
https://sputniknews.com/us/201705261053997729-free-chelsea-manning-tv-abc/

Manning had been locked up for years after she allegedly shared footage of US war crimes with WikiLeaks. Likely knowing it would land her in trouble if and when she was caught, Manning has been hailed by supporters for the remarkable fortitude she showed by going through with it anyway.

Manning’s interview will be with Juju Chang for a special edition of Nightline, the Hill reported, but parts of the conversation will be featured on Good Morning American and World News Tonight with David Muir.

After she was denied medical treatment in prison for gender identity disorder and was placed in solitary confinement, Manning attempted suicide on multiple occasions. Despite her trying past, “how it played out is only my starting point — not my final destination,” Manning said.

ABC News will broadcast an interview next month with U.S. Army Private Chelsea Manning, her first televised sit-down since serving seven years in military prison for leaking classified documents to the website WikiLeaks.

Manning, 29, will speak with ABC News journalist JuJu Chang for an interview set to air in June on a special edition of “Nightline,” the network said in a statement Thursday. Portions will also be shown on “Good Morning America,” “World News Tonight with David Muir” and ABC News’ radio and digital platforms, according to the announcement.

Prosecutors said WikiLeaks' disclosures about Iraq and Afghanistan posed a major threat to US national security. But it turns out the classified document they cited — newly obtained by BuzzFeed News — said almost the exact opposite.

Secret Report Contradicts US Position On Chelsea Manning Leaks
https://www.buzzfeed.com/jasonleopold/secret-government-report-chelsea-manning-leaks-caused-no?utm_term=.fuKEXrwyz#.ynoO0Y3ZD

June 20, 2017 - In the seven years since WikiLeaks published the largest leak of classified documents in history, the federal government has said they caused enormous damage to national security.

But a secret, 107-page report, prepared by a Department of Defense task force and newly obtained by BuzzFeed News, tells a starkly different story: It says the disclosures were largely insignificant and did not cause any real harm to US interests.

Regarding the hundreds of thousands of Iraq-related military documents and State Department cables provided by the Army private Chelsea Manning, the report assessed “with high confidence that disclosure of the Iraq data set will have no direct personal impact on current and former U.S. leadership in Iraq.”

The heavily redacted report also determined that a different set of documents published the same year, relating to the US war in Afghanistan, would not result in “significant impact” to US operations. It did, however, have the potential to cause “serious damage” to “intelligence sources, informants and the Afghan population,” and US and NATO intelligence collection efforts. The most significant impact of the leaks, the report concluded, would likely be on the lives of “cooperative Afghans, Iraqis, and other foreign interlocutors.”

The June 15, 2011 report, written a year after the leaked documents were published by Wikileaks and an international consortium of news organizations, was obtained by BuzzFeed News in response to a FOIA lawsuit filed in 2015. Classified SECRET/NOFORN, meaning it was not to be shared with foreign nationals, the document was selectively cited by government prosecutors during Manning’s court-martial. Defense lawyers were not allowed to read it. More than half the report was withheld by the government.

To prepare it, more than 20 federal government agencies, including the FBI, NSA, CIA, the Department of State, and the Department of Homeland Security, conducted a line-by-line review of more than 740,000 pages of classified documents “known or believed compromised” by WikiLeaks to assess the damage.

The report goes on to say that the documents the task force reviewed contained details about previously undisclosed civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan, which “could be used by the press or our adversaries to negatively impact support for current operations in the region.”

The task force’s review also found that a so-called, password-protected “insurance file,” which WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said contained additional classified US documents and which he threatened to publicly release if anything happened to him, likely did not contain any information the task force hadn’t already reviewed.

Manning was released from Fort Leavenworth in May after President Obama commuted her 35-year sentence. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said the arrest and prosecution of Assange, in connection with these and other documents, is now a “priority” for the Department of Justice.

Comment: This next article is "a real doozy" - that goes into some detail of the transgender sensitivity policy, now enforce, in the U.S. Military - promoted by the former Obama administration. Given the events surrounding Bradley Manning's arrest and seven year incarceration, is it possible that Bradley was transformed (brainwashed) to take on the persona of "Chelsea", not only to discredit and minimize the documents forwarded to Wikileaks, but to use Chelsea, as a role model in promoting "transgender in the U.S. Military?" Was this transformation - what the attempted suicides were all about?

Note: An Army spokesman clarifies the transgender policy is being implemented by the Department of Defense. The Army spokesman also says they are not the only service branch implementing the broader policy.

Army's transgender policy includes guidelines on male pregnancies
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/06/16/armys-transgender-policy-includes-guidelines-on-male-pregnancies.html

June 16, 2017 - The Army has begun mandatory transgender sensitivity training for soldiers. The training covers everything from “transfemale” soldiers to transgender shower etiquette to dealing with a male soldier who becomes pregnant.

Yes, good readers. Within the ranks of the greatest fighting force known to mankind – the baby’s daddy could also be the baby’s momma. Click here to see the photo.

“That pregnancy scenario is beyond words,” Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty executive director Ron Crews told me. “This is an example of how this social policy can be used simply to promote personal agendas at the expense of taxpayers with no regard for being what the military is all about.”

The matter of male soldiers with child is tucked away inside the Army’s “Policy on the Military Service of Transgender Soldiers Training Module, Tier 2: Commanders and Leaders.”

One of my readers serving in the Armed Forces was kind enough to send me a copy of the training briefing – mandated during the Obama Administration.

“The training module specifically outlines key roles and responsibilities of commanders, transgender soldiers, military medical providers and administrative management organizations,” Lt. Col. Jennifer Johnson told USA Today. “This training is mandatory for all uniformed members, as well as Department of the Army civilians.”

The briefing materials cover all sorts of scenarios – from shower stall etiquette to “transfemale” soldiers deployed to anti-LGBT countries.

“This situation is unique in that close proximity with women and men in foreign countries may be more complicated than in the U.S.,” the training module states.

Female soldiers must also come to terms with taking a shower alongside men who identify as women – even if the transgender soldier did not undergo sex-reassignment surgery.

“Soldiers must accept living and working conditions that are often austere, primitive, and characterized by little or no privacy,” the module states. “All soldiers will use billeting, bathroom and shower facilities associated with their gender marker.”

The Army guidelines mandate facilities will not be designed, modified or constructed to make transgender-only areas.

“Accommodations cannot isolate or stigmatize the TG soldier,” the guidelines state.

“As these training materials proclaim, there will be ‘mixed genitalia’ in military showers and sleeping quarters,” Crews said. “Moms and dads in America need to know this before they send their sons and daughters to military service.”

As I mentioned earlier, the policy also covers “what to do” vignette for commanders should they encounter an expectant transgender male soldier.

“The soldier did not have sex-reassignment surgery, and recently stopped taking male hormones in order to try and start a family. Today, the Soldier approached his commanding officer to discuss his newly confirmed pregnancy.”

The Army’s response to a transgender male pregnancy?

“Transgender Soldiers with a medical condition, including pregnancy, will be treated the same as any other Soldier with that condition,” the module states.

Ron Crews, the executive director of Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty was dumbfounded by the pregnancy module.

“That pregnancy scenario is beyond words,” Crews told me. “This is an example of how this social policy can be used simply to promote personal agendas at the expense of taxpayers with no regard for being what the military is all about.”

Crews called on Defense Secretary James Mattis to put a stop to what he called this “nonsense.”

“Millions of dollars and training hours have been consumed with lectures on how to deploy transgender personnel in a war zone that has laws against that behavior,” Crews said. “Military commanders should be focused on fighting wars, not on how to deal with transgender personnel.”

Former acting CIA chief Mike Morell resigns from Harvard in protest of Chelsea Manning invitation (Video)
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/sep/14/michael-morell-former-cia-acting-director-resigns-/

The former deputy and acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency is resigning as a non-resident senior fellow from Harvard’s Kennedy School after Chelsea Manning was invited to be a visiting fellow this year.

In his resignation letter on Thursday, Michael J. Morell said he “cannot be part of an organization” that “honors a convicted felon and leaker of classified information.”

“Ms. Manning was found guilty of 17 serious crimes, including six counts of espionage, for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to Wikileaks, an entity that CIA Director Mike Pompeo says operates like an adversarial foreign intelligence service,” Mr. Morell wrote. “Senior leaders in the military have stated publicly that the leaks by Ms. Manning put the lives of US soldiers at risk.”

The Kennedy School’s invitation will “assist Ms. Manning in her long-standing effort to legitimize the criminal path that she took to prominence,” the letter continued, and “may encourage others to leak classified information as well.”

Mr. Morell emphasized that he fully supports “Ms. Manning’s rights as a transgender American, including the right to serve our country in the US military.”

“But, it is my right, indeed my duty, to argue that the School’s decision is wholly inappropriate and to protest it by resigning from the Kennedy School – in order to make the fundamental point that leaking classified information is disgraceful and damaging to our nation,” he wrote.

The Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School announced on Wednesday a group of visiting fellows that includes Ms. Manning, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and former Hillary Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook.

Mr. Morell was a non-resident senior fellow at the school’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Ms. Manning’s invitation to Harvard was widely panned on the right, including by Kennedy School alumnus Bill Kristol.

According to the Guardian, the offer has been rescinded:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/15/chelsea-manning-fellowship-cia-head-cancels-harvard-speech-over-offer-to-traitor

Harvard University has rescinded an offer to make Chelsea Manning a visiting fellow after the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, cancelled an appearance at the university.

Pompeo had been scheduled to appear at Harvard’s John F Kennedy school of government to give a speech on global security concerns, but withdrew on Thursday, calling the university’s invitation to Manning a “shameful stamp of approval”.

On Wednesday, the military whistleblower had been among a group of 10 – including former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski – invited to speak at the institute of politics at Harvard’s Kennedy school as visiting fellows.

But hours after Pompeo’s withdrawal, the university stripped Manning of her title.

“I now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a visiting fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,” said the dean of the Kennedy School, Douglas Elmendorf.

“In general across the School, we do not view the title of ‘fellow’ as conveying a special honour; rather, it is a way to describe some people who spend more than a few hours at the School.

“[However] we are withdrawing the invitation to her to serve as a visiting fellow – and the perceived honour that it implies to some people – while maintaining the invitation for her to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak in the school’s forum.”

He said their invitation to Manning was not a political endorsement, but was aimed at letting students “engage with people with fundamentally different worldviews”.

In response, Manning tweeted that she was “honoured” to be disinvited.

I came across the below article about the offer withdrawal following Mike Pompeo's letter. Pompeo's complaint that Manning is a traitor because she leaked information on the US crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan to Wikileaks. His hypocrisy didn't go unnoticed as Pompeo himself tweeted about the DNC emails published by WikiLeaks in July 2016.

https://www.rt.com/usa/403453-assange-trolls-pompeo-wikileaks/
WikiLeaks is an enemy of the US, according to CIA head Mike Pompeo, who was trolled mercilessly by Julian Assange and others unimpressed by his perceived hypocrisy.

Pompeo made the claim in a letter to Harvard expressing his displeasure at the Ivy League school’s decision to make “American traitor” Manning a visiting fellow. Harvard subsequently reversed its decision.

Manning “betrayed her country” by leaking classified information to WikiLeaks, Pompeo said, explaining the whistleblowing website was both an enemy of the US and “akin to a hostile foreign intelligence service.”

The CIA director claimed Manning “stands against everything the brave men and women I serve alongside stand for,” and pointed out he was not referring to Manning being transgender, just “her identity as a traitor” to the US.

Manning served the US “with disgrace,” Pompeo said, and “violated the warrior ethos she promised to uphold,” by whistleblowing on the US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pompeo was soon called a hypocrite given his past praise of WikiLeaks. The former Kansas congressman appeared to be a big fan of the whistleblowing organization last July, tweeting about the DNC emails published by WikiLeaks.

Pompeo tweeted details from both the DNC emails and emails from Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Chair John Podesta during the 2016 election to criticize Clinton, as evidenced by archivedversions of his comments. Both tranches of emails were published by WikiLeaks. Pompeo made similar statements about WikiLeaks in April at a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) event in Washington, claiming WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his associates were “demons.”

“It’s time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is, a non-state hostile intelligence service, often abetted by state actors like Russia,” he said.

Assange appeared to be trolling Pompeo and his “cry-bully complaint,” tweeting the CIA head had been “triggered” by Harvard’s decision

I'm not sure ... what to think about the "very public announcement" of a former CIA Deputy Director "resigning in protest" from a "non-resident senior fellow from Harvard’s Kennedy School" position .... unless it's to give an impression "that the CIA - want nothing to do with Chelsea Manning"? Chances are that the CIA is probably very much involved with Chelsea (Bradley) Manning?

The article above states, "Fellows are given housing on campus and a modest stipend ..." but that Manning is included in "a group of visiting fellows" that includes former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and former Hillary Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook.

One of the questions I have on Manning, that I haven't yet resolved, is if (Bradley) Manning had any transgender traits "before" being arrested and kept in solitary confinement, for long periods of time? July 12, 2017 marked ten years since the release of the famous video "Collateral Murder" and Manning was released from prison in May by Obama. Plenty of time for the CIA to transform "Bradley to Chelsea"?

Just as I was ready to Post this - I noticed Palinurus's Post - that the offer to Manning has been rescinded. In response, Manning tweeted that she was “honoured” to be disinvited.

Personally, I think this is all just a charade, to give the impression, that the CIA are distancing themselves from Manning? The video that WikiLeaks released was from an incident in Iraq and now, the Pentagon and the CIA have increased their activity in Iraq and Afghanistan (since they're getting kicked out of Syria). I'm curious - as to - what Assange's response might be in this situation?

July 12 marks a decade since WikiLeaks' release of the infamous "Collateral Murder" video – a 40 minute snapshot of the brutal Iraqi insurgency, in which a pair of US Apache helicopters rained down death and destruction on a group of innocent Iraqi civilians.

Murder, Imprisonment, Isolation, War Crimes: 'Collateral Murder' Ten Years On (Video) July 12, 2017
https://sputniknews.com/military/201707121055469737-collateral-murder-decade-anniversary/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is9sxRfU-ik

The 2007 airstrikes were a series of air-to-ground attacks conducted in Al-Amin al-Thaniyah, New Baghdad.

In the first, the Apaches fired on a group of ten Iraqis, including journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen and his driver and assistant Saeed Chmagh (both employed by Reuters) — seven were killed, and one injured.

The second strike was directed at a van driven by Saleh Matasher Tomal. Both Chmagh and Tomal were killed, and two of Tomal's children badly wounded.

In the third, pilots fired on a building into which the group fled, with a volley of Hellfire missiles.

On the day of the attack, the US military acknowledged the two journalists were killed, along with nine "insurgents" — the engagement was claimed to have a combat operation against a "hostile force" in which "great pains" were taken to prevent the loss of innocent lives. Moreover, it was claimed it was unclear whether the journalists were slain by US fire or from Iraqi insurgents.

The event was consequently investigated by the US military, an inquiry which concluded the soldiers had acted entirely in accordance with the law of armed conflict, and the military's own rules of engagement.

For almost three years, despite attempts by Reuters to have footage of the incident released under the Freedom of Information Act, the deadly strikes remained largely unacknowledged, and entirely unexamined.

A mainstream media journalist, embedded with the US military at the time, mentioned the assault in his 2009 autobiography — although his account was subsequently shown to be fabricated.

The conspiracy of silence on the matter was shattered in April 2010, when WikiLeaks released footage recorded by the gunsight of one of the attacking helicopters. Dubbed "Collateral Murder" by the leak site, the video depicted the incident in full, replete with disturbingly callous radio chatter between the aircrews and ground units involved.

The exposure provoked international condemnation and widespread media coverage. Many outlets hailed WikiLeaks, and the video's (then unknown) leaker, as heroes, and the Iraq war — by then in its seventh year — became increasingly impossible for politicians, journalists and civilians to seriously defend.

While the footage shocked and appalled the world over, Josh Stieber, a member of the US military company that carried out the attack, starkly underlined just how mundane the incident was in the context of the conflict.

"When I started to see the discussion flowing from [the video], I was surprised at how extreme it was made out to be. What was shown in the video was not out of the ordinary in Iraq. One policy we had that was even more extreme was if a roadside bomb went off, we were supposed to shoot anyone standing in that area. We were told that we needed to make the local population more afraid of us," he said.

However, the revelation did not precipitate a termination of hostilities in Iraq, or prosecutions of any of the personnel involved. Instead, in May 2010, 22-year-old American Army intelligence analyst Chelsea (then Bradley) Manning was arrested after it was revealed she was the source of the leaked video, along with roughly 260,000 diplomatic cables, to WikiLeaks.

Manning proceeded to spend over three years in solitary confinement, a period which David House, founder of the Private Manning Support Network, dubbed "no-touch torture" — Manning was subjected to extended periods of isolation, harassment and sleep-deprivation.

The experience caused Manning to "physically, mentally, and emotionally" degrade over time, House said. In August 2013, she was sentenced to 35 years' imprisonment. Mercifully, in May 2017, Manning was released, following a commutation of her sentence by former President Barack Obama.

It was subsequently acknowledged Manning's disclosures did not in fact damage US interests.

Moreover, WikiLeaks, and site founder Julian Assange, quickly found themselves the subject of US prosecutorial ire too.

In November 2010, US Attorney-General Eric Holder announced there was "an active, ongoing criminal investigation" into WikiLeaks — that same month, Sweden launched a sexual assault investigation into Assange, and issued a Europe-wide warrant for his arrest.

Residing in the UK, Assange feared extradition to the US, should Swedish — or British — authorities take him in to custody. He applied for political asylum in Ecuador, and was granted sanctuary in the country's London embassy June 19, 2012. For five years, he remained under effective house arrest, forbidden from leaving a 2,153 square foot room in the embassy's bowels, until prosecutors dumped the baseless case.

However, Assange's problems remain far from over.

London's Metropolitan Police — which stood watch outside the Embassy's door 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the moment he entered it, at an estimated cost to UK taxpayers of US$16.8 million (£13 million) between 2012 and 2015 alone — remain "obliged" to execute an arrest warrant issued in 2012 by Westminster Magistrate's Court.

The charges relate to Assange's failure to surrender to authorities. He still faces arrest if he leaves the embassy. Discussions between Assange's legal team and UK authorities on the potential cessation of bail violation charges remain ongoing.

All along, hostilities in Iraq have continued, with fluctuating levels of intensity.

In July 2017, coalition forces — including the US and UK — successfully wrested control of Mosul from terror group Daesh. Amnesty International has stated the coalition failed to take adequate measures to protect people, subjecting them to a terrifying barrage of fire.

"The scale and gravity of the loss of civilian lives during the military operation to retake Mosul must be publicly acknowledged. The horrors people have witnessed and the disregard for human life by all parties to this conflict must not go unpunished. Entire families have been wiped out, many of whom are still buried under the rubble today. The people of Mosul deserve to know, from their government, that there will be justice and reparation so that the harrowing impact of this operation is duly addressed," said Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty International's Middle East Research Director.

(...) One of the questions I have on Manning, that I haven't yet resolved, is if (Bradley) Manning had any transgender traits "before" being arrested and kept in solitary confinement, for long periods of time? July 12, 2017 marked ten years since the release of the famous video "Collateral Murder" and Manning was released from prison in May by Obama. Plenty of time for the CIA to transform "Bradley to Chelsea"?
(...)

Good question angelburst29, and plenty of time to subject Manning to mind control techniques too. Especially given the reports of what happened to Manning in prison, as you quoted below for example:

I guess this is yet another show to watch.

I wondered that too from time to time. Being in a prison can change people and especially if it is someone who leaked information and is imo a target for the CIA. It is useful too for the CIA to discredit him, like "Who is listening to such a person, can you trust someone like that?"
