Snow storms shut most of Ireland on Friday and forced Britain to call in the army to battle some of the worst weather seen in nearly 30 years.

Snow storms shut Ireland and force Britain to call in the army Friday 2 March 2018

Britain and Ireland were battered by Storm Emma which blocked roads, grounded planes and stopped trains.

At least 24,000 homes and businesses in Ireland were left without power, the stock exchange was shut, all schools were closed and transport ground to a halt with all flights canceled from Dublin airport.

In Britain, a seven-year-old girl was killed in Cornwall after a car crashed into a house in icy conditions, the BBC reported. Dozens of passengers were stranded on trains overnight in southern England.

The army was called in to help rescue hundreds of drivers stuck in the snow and to transport National Health Service workers. Roads were closed, schools shut and flights canceled across Britain.

“The Armed Forces are assisting emergency services in ensuring essential NHS staff are able to get to work and carry out their work in local communities,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said.

The army is “standing by to help the Police and civil authorities across the UK following heavy snowfall. We are also aware of Armed Forces personnel volunteering in their own time with their own vehicles to help those in need.”

As unusually cold weather gripped Europe, Britain’s military was sent out Friday to central and western England to get hospital employees to work and help police rescue people from snowbound vehicles.

Europe weather: UK army sent out; Dutch ice skate on canals Friday 2 March 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1257806/world

Nicknamed “The Beast from the East,” the cold front caused travel chaos, with hundreds of flights canceled in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Switzerland. Trains broke down. Motorists found themselves stuck on highways and trapped in frosty conditions for hours.

“This is particularly unusual weather,” British Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said. “It’s something that happens very rarely in this country.”

Up to a meter (three feet) of snow was reported in eastern Ireland, and travelers were stranded south and west of the capital, Dublin.

The big chill also froze canals in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. Ice on the historic Prinsengracht canal was thick enough for residents to lace up their skates and glide across its frozen surface. Tourists without skates slid across the ice, taking selfies. “It’s just cool. You can go fast and you see the world from a slightly different perspective,” said skater Noldus Reijnders.

Heathrow Airport tweeted Friday that it was working with airlines to consolidate the flight schedule “to provide more certainty around departing flights,” amid the extreme winter conditions across the UK and Europe. More than 350 flights were canceled. Gatwick, London City, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports also reported cancelations.

Other European airports closed down entirely. Authorities at Geneva’s airport suspended air traffic for a second straight day amid heavy snowfall. By early afternoon, flights had resumed.

Around 340 flights were canceled at Ireland’s Dublin Airport, which posted images of swirling snow together with the hashtag “BeastFromTheEast.” It doesn’t plan to open until Saturday.

The army sent 20 troops and 10 four-wheel drive vehicles to Shropshire, the county south of Liverpool, and the Royal Marines sent resources to Devon and Cornwall on the southwest coast after police asked for help.

One train traveling from London’s Waterloo Station to Weymouth ground to a halt outside New Milton, stranding motorists for hours. By mid-afternoon, South Western Railway and Southeastern had urged customers not to travel.

Some commuters reported that rail doors refused to open as the push-button mechanisms froze in the cold. Thousands of homes are without electricity as temperatures remain below freezing with bitter winds.

One police force in Scotland tweeted a picture of a patrol car beside a snowdrift almost as high as the vehicle itself to show drivers why they should stay home. “PLEASE AVOID THIS AREA,” the post said.

In central England, volunteers brought hot drinks and blankets to stranded drivers as they waited for help. Eleanor Kelly, 19, said those stranded in the Milnrow suburb of Rochdale included a father with a baby and toddler in his car. “We’ve been trying to get to as many people as we can,” she said.
Commuter Philip Brown endured more than 15 hours on a train traveling from London Waterloo to Bournemouth, Dorset. The average time for the journey is about two hours. “I didn’t have any food or water. There were no buffet facilities on board. The train lost power and we lost heating and lights,” said Brown, 49. “I couldn’t tell you how cold it was, but it was cold enough to prevent you from sleeping ... People were wrapping jumpers round their legs trying to keep warm.”

But in Amsterdam, nobody was complaining about the cold. Residents on skates glided past tourists who slithered across the ice for pictures. One woman took her dog for a walk along the frozen canal.

Still, despite measures taken by authorities to help the ice develop, there were still some holes and parts of the canal weren’t frozen at all. Reijnders was wearing a special red ice pick around his neck just in case.

GENEVA: Exceptional snow and wind forced airports to close Thursday in Scotland, Switzerland and France and stranded several hundred drivers in their cars as a Siberian cold snap stretched across Europe.

Snow and wind paralyze European airports, trap drivers Thursday 1 March 2018

Geneva’s airport closed after the Swiss city was hit with 13 centimeters (about five inches) of snow over a three-hour period in the early morning.
It reopened several hours later after extensive de-icing of the runway, plans and facilities.

Several deaths have been attributed to the unusually cold late-winter weather across Europe. The fatalities include a man in his 60s who was pronounced dead after being pulled from a frozen lake in London on Wednesday, the city ambulance service said.

Snow shut Glasgow and Edinburgh airports in Scotland, and there are cancelations at Heathrow and other airports in Britain. Airports in the southern French cities of Montpellier and the Atlantic beach resort of Biarritz were also affected.

Hundreds of drivers were trapped in their cars overnight in Scotland and authorities said everyone except emergency-services workers should stay off the roads.

Police in the county of Lincolnshire in eastern England say most roads there are impassable, with as much as two feet (60 centimeters) of snow in rural areas.

Forecasters say a new storm is due to bring blizzards, freezing rain and thunderstorms to Ireland, southwestern England and Wales on Thursday.

About 2,000 cars were blocked on highways in the Herault region of southern France, where snow — and snowplows — are extremely rare.

Snow blanketed Paris and the surrounding region Thursday, and authorities urged Paris commuters to leave their cars at home because of dangerous conditions.

US government offices in the nation’s capital closed due to an early March storm that packed the punch of a hurricane, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) said in a statement on Friday.

"Federal Offices in the Washington, DC area are closed. Emergency and telework-ready employees required to work must follow their agency's policies, including written telework agreements," the OPM announcement said. In addition, every school district in the Washington, DC area closed for the day as toppled trees blocked highways and flying debris severed power lines amid a barely noticeable precipitation that included occasional snow flurries, local radio reported.

Strong winds with this Northeaster'- along with the heavy snow totals. Last night, the snow was coming down at a slant and the force winds were unbelievable strong. I thought, the house was going to lift off it's foundation.

Nor'easter winding down, coastal flooding concerns remain (Video) 03.03.2018
https://www.yahoo.com/gma/noreaster-winding-down-coastal-flooding-concerns-remain-112808259--abc-news-topstories.html

The major nor'easter that brought intense rain, wind and snow to the Northeast on Friday is moving out to sea today.

Numerous roads were closed due to debris, fallen trees and power lines -- including lanes on I-95 outside of Washington, D.C. Rail service across the Northeast was impacted significantly with Amtrak suspending all service on the Northeast Corridor line.

Several communities in Massachusetts are completely in the dark Saturday morning. There were 381,000 customers without power in the state as of 6 a.m. Widespread street flooding was reported in eastern Massachusetts with storm surge reported to be as high as 3 feet. Numerous water rescues were performed, especially in Quincy, Massachusetts, where the National Guard was performing rescues into the night.

Top rainfall totals came in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, which received 5.74 inches, while Cobleskill, New York, set the high mark with 39.3 inches of snow. Barnstable, Massachusetts, saw the highest wind gust on Friday at 93 mph, while Boston saw a 70 mph gust and New York's JFK Airport measured one at 67 mph.

As the storm slowly pulls away, the primary concern Saturday morning is more coastal flooding from Virginia to Maine during the high-tide cycles.

The Boston Harbor rose to 14.67 feet on Friday, marking the third-highest on record there. Another high tide near 14.6 feet is forecast around noon today. Along Cape Cod, the high tide today will reach near major flood stage, and will once again be in the top-3 crests on record.

The radar and satellite Saturday morning is showing precipitation has moved offshore with only a few showers and snow bands left over the Northeast.

While the storm is several hundred miles away, wind gusts could reach 30 to 50 mph through much of the day Saturday across the northeast U.S., including all the major cities along the I-95 corridor.

The strong gusty winds will hamper recovery efforts -- especially in restoring power.

On Sunday, the storm is gone and winds will be even calmer.

Western storm dumping snow, rain - A strong storm system riding a frontal boundary is moving through the western U.S. on Saturday morning. It will bring more rain to the California coast and more snow from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the northern Rockies.

Mammoth Mountain in California has recorded 48 inches of snow over the last three days. They could receive another foot before the storm moves out of the western U.S.

Additional snow totals of 2 to 3 feet are expected in the southern Sierra Nevada today. In Southern California, heavy rain is still possible on the hillsides. This could cause some flooding on streets. Snowfall totals up to 18 inches are expected in the highest elevations of Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Saturday.

Strong winds will move through Las Vegas today with gusts up to 65 mph.

Locally 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected in the northern Rockies over the next few days. The storm will then move to the central U.S. and bring more snow to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where locally over 6 inches of snow is possible on Monday.

British authorities moved to evacuate coastal settlements as a violent storm sent an icy chill through the United Kingdom, unleashing shivering subzero temperatures and strong winds.

The freezing weather brought by Storm Emma claimed four more lives in the United Kingdom, raising the death toll to 14, the Sun reports.

Giant waves hammered Britain’s coast, prompting the authorities to urge residents of Beesands, a coastal village in Devon, to evacuate their homes if they “are willing and able to voluntarily leave,” while the Environment Agency warned people living in 36 other areas “to be ready for problems,” the newspaper adds.

British authorities also issued a number of flood warnings and alerts, while freezing rain brought by the storm, which was dubbed ‘the Beast from the East’ by the media, may also pose a serious risk to people navigating the country’s motorways.

The raging tempest also resulted in hundreds of schools around the country being closed and dozens of flights being grounded, while the Met Office urged citizens to avoid travelling in this weather unless absolutely necessary.

DUBLIN/LONDON: Airports reopened and public transport began to grind back into service on Saturday after the worst snowstorms in nearly 30 years caused two days of major disruption in Britain and shut most of Ireland.

Ireland, Britain grind slowly back to normal following snowstorms Saturday 3 March 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1258481/world

A blast of Siberian cold dubbed “the Beast from the East” combined with Storm Emma’s arrival from the south to ground planes, shut schools and in Ireland, knock out the entire public transport network with weather rarely seen in either country.

Flood warnings were issued on Saturday due to the melting snow, which in Scotland had led to snow drifts up to 10 feet (three meters) deep, according to ScotRail. While Ireland’s most severe weather warning was lifted, the government urged caution.

“Driving conditions remain treacherous due to ice and snow on the ground. We’re working hard to reopen roads and resume public transport. Please continue to take extreme care,” Prime Minister Leo Varadkar warned the public on Twitter.

Ireland’s main airports reopened, although over 50 flights in Dublin, mainly operated by Ryanair and IAG’s Aer Lingus, had already been canceled before snow and ice teams worked through the night to clear the airfield.

Public transport across Ireland was due to reopen with a limited service from 1200 GMT, while train operators were running half a schedule in Scotland, which initially bore the brunt of the Siberian cold front.

According to forecasters, Scotland was expected to see more snow on Saturday while they warned that flooding and icy roads could disrupt travel across the rest of Britain.

Major roads in northern England and the south west have been badly hit by snow, trapping passengers in their vehicles for hours on end, while some trains have been stranded on tracks with hundreds of people on board. One photograph that circulated widely on social media showed a man asleep in a carriage rack of a stationary train.

As temperatures started to recover, the country’s biggest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, appeared to be operating a normal service while Manchester and Edinburgh reported fewer cancelations and delays to flights.

Twitter users have sounded the alarm about food supplies, posting pics of empty shelves in supermarkets in the UK and Ireland as the countries have been hit by the worst snowstorm in decades.

Beast from the East, as social media outlets have dubbed the record snowfall in Britain, has caused major breakdowns in fresh food supply across the British Isles according to numerous reports.

The hashtag #emptyshelves has been trending for several days now as shoppers from both the UK and Ireland have posted on Twitter and Facebook photos of empty shelves in supermarkets Morrisons, Lidl, Londis, Asda, Tesco, Co-op and Aldi. Earlier users had also told of inflated bread prices and bread rations recommended by some stores. Fresh food such as dairy, bread and greengroceries have disappeared from major stores over the past several days due to numerous accidents on local highways as the supermarkets are informing their customers.

The first witnesses about food breakdown appeared in the middle of the last week in the face of havoc on the roads and panic shopping amid the fears of being snowed in. Although the road situation was forecasted to improve by the end of the week, the food chaos remained on Sunday, leaving the local residents scared.

Meanwhile the chain Londis, has outraged shoppers by having raised prices by 2 times in these hard times as one Facebook user reported, they had to buy a loaf of bread for £3 instead of usual £1.40 and posted a receipt. The shop bosses have justified themselves by saying they had to pay extra money to suppliers for delivery in poor weather conditions.

Although the UK's worst snowstorm in almost 30 years - dubbed the "Beast from the East" - has largely passed, there was no respite from the disruption it brought about for some Brits, especially in London.

Thousands of Homes Left Without Water Across UK as Thawing Snow Bursts Pipes 05.03.2018
https://sputniknews.com/europe/201803051062239701-snow-ice-thaw-pipes/

Households across the UK were further inconvenienced as thawing snow burst multiple pipes, leaving tens of thousands of homes without running water.

After Storm Emma, around 12,000 homes are currently without water access or are experiencing very low-pressure levels in London alone, according to data released by Thames Water.

Londoners affected were understandably annoyed by the situation, taking to social media to express their concerns and annoyance, with many tweeting directly to water suppliers.

"We've seen an increase in leaks and bursts on our network, which we are urgently dealing with as fast as we possibly can. But the sudden and widespread surge in demand, coinciding with the rise in temperatures, means we also need to urge all our customers to check their own pipes for bursts and call a plumber if necessary. We are getting as much extra water into our network as we can and sincerely apologize to all our customers who are currently without water or who have low pressure," said Thames Water in a press release.

A small number of residents also reported power outages, though electricity providers are yet to confirm any supply disruptions.

Another 5,000 homes in Kent are experiencing similar problems with intermittent supply, in addition to thousands more across Wales. Water networks in other parts of the UK — including Birmingham, Nottingham and Derbyshire — have apologized to customers who were briefly left without water access, but added that most supply issues have now been resolved.

However, some suppliers have kept warnings in place and are advising customers to use water sparingly, as some parts of the UK are still experiencing shortages. Southern Water, which supplies much of Kent, urged customers to "only use the water you absolutely must."

"These problems are likely to continue over the next few days", said a Welsh Water spokesman.

I wonder, if these planet alignments have been influencing our weather patterns?

Early risers will be greeted with a celestial alignment in March with the moon falling in line with several planets on the morning of March 8.

Moon to align with Jupiter, Mars and Saturn before dawn Thursday March 06, 2018,
https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/moon-to-align-with-jupiter-mars-and-saturn-before-dawn-thursday/70004337

Early risers will be greeted with a celestial alignment in March with the moon falling in line with several planets on the morning of March 8.

“Of the planets, Jupiter rises the earliest, around midnight [local time], followed by Mars at 2 a.m. and Saturn at 3 a.m.,”

]AccuWeather Astronomy Blogger Dave Samuhel said. The moon will pass by the planets over the course of several nights through the middle of March, falling right in line between Jupiter and Mars before dawn on March 8.

If the weather does not cooperate and clouds obscure the alignment on morning of March 8, stargazers will still have plenty of opportunities to see the moon as it passes by the planets.

“On March 7, [the moon] will be closest to Jupiter, on March 9 it will be closest to Mars, and on the March 10 it will be near Saturn,” Samuhel said.

Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are all visible with the naked eye, but Pluto is much dimmer and requires the use of binoculars or a telescope to see.

This can make Pluto difficult to find, but on March 12, the Moon will be sitting just to the left of the dwarf planet. The Moon will serve as a reference point for onlookers, making it easier to spot through a telescope.

Not only will those with a telescope be able to see Pluto, but also details of Jupiter and Saturn.

With a simple telescope or good pair of binoculars and a steady hand, stargazers focusing on Jupiter can spot its four largest moons; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

The location of the moons will vary from night to night and some may not be able to be seen when they are passing in front of or behind the gas giant.

Those turning their telescopes to Saturn may be able to see the planet’s famous rings.

As the year progresses, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars will gradually grow brighter and rise above the horizon earlier in the night. This will provide ample opportunities for people to view these planets in the coming months.

This year will be a good year for viewing Mars as it approaches opposition, or the point in its orbit when it is closest to the Earth.

This year in particular will be favorable for viewing Mars as it will be the closest it has been to Earth since 2003.

“Mars will become brighter every night in advance of its very close approach to [Earth] in July,” Samuhel said.”

Despite its close approach, Mars will remain a small point of light in the sky, but will set itself apart from the countless stars by glowing rusty orange in color.

Thousands of flights have been cancelled at New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia airports as the northeastern US weathers yet another powerful winter storm Wednesday and Thursday.

High Winds, Heavy Snow: Another Nor’easter Pounds US East Coast (PHOTOS, VIDEOS) 07.03.2018
https://sputniknews.com/us/201803071062326546-another-nor-easter-pounds-US-east-coast/

Airlines have canceled more than 2,100 flights scheduled to depart Wednesday from airports in the Boston, Philadelphia and New York areas as Winter Storm Quinn is bring high winds and heavy snow to the region.

Another 200 flights have also been grounded for Thursday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.com. Airlines including United, Delta, JetBlue and American have waived fees for travelers impacted by the storms.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, delays in major Northeast airports were 15 minutes or less as of Wednesday morning, but conditions are expected to worsen.

As of midday Wednesday, there is already six inches of heavy, wet snow in Exton, Pennsylvania, Weather Channel Meteorologist Mike Seidel reported.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf also urged people to stay off the roads on Wednesday as the nor'easter moves across his state and noted that the National Guard has been activated.

"We know the storm has shifted east and that's a good thing for many people in Pennsylvania, but it's still going to have a significant impact on the eastern third of our state. This is a powerful storm and conditions can change quickly," Wolf said at a Wednesday news conference.

Four inches of snow were recorded near Long Green, Maryland, on Wednesday, while two inches of snow fell in Wilmington, Delaware. In addition, 4.5 inches have already been reported in Greenville, New York, while four inches have piled up in West Milford, New Jersey.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings in northern Maryland, northern Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, central and eastern New York and the majority of New England, including Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, Albany, Portland and the Boston metro area.

Winter advisories for lighter snow were issued in Baltimore, Providence and areas in upstate New York including Binghamton, Utica and Watertown.

Last week, Winter Storm Riley left more than 1.6 million homes and businesses without electricity. Thousands of flights were cancelled because of the storm and the state of Virginia declared a state of emergency. As Riley hammered the mid-Atlantic Friday morning, US federal offices were closed for the day in Washington, DC, and more than a million customers lost electricity in the region as a result of the storm.

Winter Storm Quinn, whose snow and wind is expected to intensify today and lead to widespread power outages and tree damage, comes only a few days after another nor'easter knocked out power to more than 2 million people in the region.

Now, once again, more than 50 million people from Philadelphia to Boston are under storm warnings and watches.

All hail "thundersnow," one of Mother Nature's most bizarre mashups!

Thundersnow roars above New York City as nor'easter slams East Coast (Video - Tweets) Wednesday March 7, 2018
https://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2018/03/07/thundersnow-roars-above-new-york-city-noreaster-slams-east-coast/403947002/

Thundersnow — a thunderstorm that produces snow instead of rain — was reported Wednesday in New York City from the powerful nor'easter lashing the Northeast. It also rattled portions of eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

The thundersnow spurred plenty of excitement on social media:

CNN Weather Center
✔ @CNNweather

Turn up the sound. Thundersnow is being reported all around New York City.

Andrew Freedman
✔ @afreedma

Astonished at amount of lightning strikes in S NJ and SE PA as this storm “bombs out” off the coast. Really impressive. Also, the heavy snow band sitting just west of nyc could produce some jackpot totals there.

Shaun King
✔ @ShaunKing

Strangest thing.

It is snowing like crazy in Brooklyn, but I just saw several bolts of lighting then loud bouts of thunder.

Don't know that I've ever seen that.

What is thundersnow?

Convection — upward motion of air — helps produce thunderstorms. But it's fairly rare to have convection within a winter storm. Thunder and lightning are much more common in warm-season thunderstorms, according to meteorologist Jeff Haby.

But when there's strong enough convection, along with plenty of moisture available, a winter storm can produce thundersnow.

Thundersnow is typically associated with heavy rates of snow, which can lead to reduced visibility. And while the snow sometimes muffles the thunder, the lightning can still be seen.

One of the more well-known instances of thundersnow occurred in 2011 in Chicago and involved Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore.

Thundersnow is sometimes also seen downstream of the Great Salt Lake and the Great Lakes during lake-effect snowstorms, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

New icy blast cancels over 100 flights at London Heathrow Saturday 17 March 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1268176/world

London: A fresh bout of snow on Saturday forced the cancelation of more than 100 flights in and out of London’s Heathrow Airport, with a bad forecast threatening further disruption.

Transatlantic flights were among more than 115 grounded so far, with British Airways canceling multiple domestic flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester and services to European destinations.

“While this weekend’s weather may result in minor delays and some airlines consolidating flights, significant disruption at Heathrow is not currently expected,” said a Heathrow spokesman.

“We are working closely with our on-site Met Office to monitor the further snowfall expected throughout the weekend.”

The airport canceled scores of flights at the end of last month following the arrival of the “Beast from the East” snowstorm.

The new icy blast bas been dubbed the “mini-Beast from the East,” with disruption expected to be less widespread and sustained.

According to forecasters, another snowstorm has brought 70 mph icy blasts and up to 25 cm (10 inches) of snowfall, painting Britain white, as temperatures dropped to 5 degrees below zero Celsius.

The Met Office keeps issuing yellow weather and amber warnings, predicting travel disruptions and power cuts.

“It will be bitterly cold with some snow for many places over the weekend. There are some very strong winds, meaning it could feel as low as —7C or —8C for some people,” said Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkhill.

London’s Heathrow Airport, in turn, has cancelled some 70 flights ahead of the heavy snowfall.

“Poor weather conditions are forecast across parts of the UK across the weekend, so we have merged a small number of flights traveling to or from Heathrow Airport," a spokesman for British Airways said.

Meanwhile, Public Health England has also issued a warning of a “risk to life” for kids and the elderly who may “struggle to cope” with thechilly conditions."

"[It] may come as a shock to the system for some whose bodies may struggle to cope in cold weather. It’s worth remembering that cold temperatures – indoors and outdoors — can affect health, particularly in young children, older people and those with heart and lung conditions."

Certainly, the blizzard couldn’t go unnoticed on social media; people shared some impressive videos on Twitter:

According to the Met Office, the wintry conditions and wind chill will continue for the rest of the weekend.

On Friday, a 400-meter wide avalanche starting at an altitude of about 2,200 meters above the sea hit the Swiss ski resort in the Vallon d'Arbi region near to Riddes in canton Vaud.

According to the Swissinfo.ch news portal, the identity of the deceased person has not yet been established.

Valais cantonal police reportedly said that those missing were two French nationals and one Swiss.

According to a police representative, there are little chances of finding them alive.

Switzerland has experienced exceptionally high levels of snow this winter, which has raised avalanche warnings to the maximum alert in several areas.

The snow is just starting here, in the State of Pennsylvania but it's not predicted to be as much as for Washington.

United States government offices in Washington, DC closed due to heavy snow, the Office of Personal Management (OPM) said on Wednesday.

"Federal offices in the Washington, DC area are closed. Emergency and telework-ready employees required to work must follow their agency's policies, including written telework agreements," OPM said in a statement.

The snowfall began late Tuesday and is expected to strengthen throughout the day. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Washington area, forecasting up to 8 inches (21 cm) of snow.

Meteorologists predict the storm could be the strongest snowfall in the district this season.

In addition, a heavy snowstorm along the eastern coast of the United States led to the cancellation of almost 3,500 air flights, the flight-tracking website Flightaware.com reported on Wednesday.

As of 8:30 a.m. local time, 3,439 flights within, into or out of the United States were called off, the website said. Another 334 flights were delayed.

American Airlines canceled 447 flights. Republican called off 411 flights, and Jetblue grounded 402 others. Southwest reported 381 cancellations, while United listed 366.

More than 1,100 flights were canceled at three major airports around New York City. The Washington, DC area faced more than 300 cancellations.

That’s not an Instagram filter! Dust from the North African Sahara has recently turned snow orange in Eastern Europe, baffling locals who have posted pictures of the spooky orange-tinted sand blanketing countries including Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova on social media.

According to experts, this phenomenon is actually not that rare, happening every five years or so.

Meteorologist Steven Keates from the British national weather service explains that the color change was caused by sand and dust blown up into the clouds from dry and desertous North Africa.

"There has been a lot of lifted sand or dust originating from North Africa and the Sahara, from sandstorms which have formed in the desert," Keates told the Independent.

"As the sand gets lifted to the upper levels of the atmosphere, it gets distributed elsewhere," he said.

"Looking at satellite imagery from NASA, it shows a lot of sand and dust in the atmosphere drifting across the Mediterranean. When it rains or snows, it drags down whatever is up there, if there is sand in the atmosphere [then it falls, too]," Keates added.

Other parts of the world are no strangers to colored snow (no, not like that) and other dust-influenced weather.

In January, residents of a town in central Kazakhstan claimed that pollution from the local iron and steel industry covered the snow in black ash.

In 2009, a dust storm covered the whole city of Sydney, Australia, in a red fog after strong winds from parts of inland New South Wales and South Australia blew in huge amounts of dust.

Hail storms pound the Bay Area - kids 'sled' down hills in Oakland
Updated 8:42 am, Monday, April 16, 2018
An unstable atmosphere and chilly temperatures triggered isolated hail storms around the Bay Area Monday morning.

The hail came down hard at about 7 a.m. in the East Bay and bits of ice were plentiful and collected on the ground, making it look as if it had snowed.

Many posted images on Twitter of the hail dusting the ground and cars in Oakland and Alameda.

One person shared an image of kids "sledding" down a hail-covered hill in Oakland; another person in Berkeley tweeted at 8:30 a.m., "Mung-bean-sized hail in Berkeley flats right now."

By 8:30 a.m. acres and acres of the Oakland Hills were covered in hail, creating a wintry scene.

The hail pounded Highway 13, the short loop through Alameda, causing traffic jams. Caltrans reportedly dropped sand on the road to prevent slipping.

At 8:15 a.m., a live webcam on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge showed a hail storm.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, small hail, snow on mountain peaks, and gusty winds are all in the forecast for Monday morning and afternoon. The weather is forecast to calm in the evening.
