Big debris flow hits Chamoson, Switzerland – August 7, 2018
08/08/2018
A damaging debris flow hit the village of Chamoson, Switzerland late afternoon yesterday, August 7. It was caused by locally very intense rainfall, with surface runoff streaming into a channel in Chamoson.

Preliminary reports indicate 18 mm of rain fell in only 10 minutes and a total of ~50 mm in one hour. The reported data however, is from a weather station several kilometers away so locally there may have been even more rainfall.

Debris flows are a form of water-saturated mass movement, typically caused either by short, intense ranifall. Depending on the amount of bedload suspended in the flow, such events range from flash floods (with relatively little bedload) through hyperconcentrated flows to debris flows.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton at around 21:00 EDT on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, ahead of a slow-moving area of tropical moisture-fueled rain showers.

Parts of Toronto experienced widespread flash flooding shortly after as rain quickly overwhelmed drainage systems. Highways 400 and 401, the area near Allen Road, the downtown core and the Toronto Islands were the worst affected.

According to EC, approximately 50 to 75 mm (1.9 - 2.9 inches) of rain fell in the span of two to three hours across parts of the city but some areas received more than 100 mm (3.93 inches), which is more than the city receives during the entire month of August (average: 78.1 mm (3 inches)). However, many areas of Toronto received much less than 22 mm (0.86 inches) of rain, showing the very localized nature of the heavy shower.

Toronto Hydro said around 22:00 EDT they had lost their power supply from Hydro One and subsequently 16 000 customers lost power in the area of Finch Station and Steeles, Sheppard and Islington avenues. Power was restored to approximately 8 000 customers at around 22:30 EDT.

Flooding strikes France as heat relief unfolds in western Europe

By Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
August 09, 2018, 1:03:53 PM EDT

Relief from the intense heat that has been baking western Europe came at the expense of flooding rain across parts of France on Thursday.

Southern France was one of the areas hit hardest by flooding.

The Fire and Rescue Service of Bouches-du-Rhône department reported more than 200 rescue operations amid the flooding rain, which inundated the city of Aubagne.

To the northwest in the Gard department, rising waters forced the evacuation of 126 German children from a summer camp in Saint-Jean-de-Peyrolas, according to BFMTV.

A 70-year-old man who was supervising the group is missing after the vehicle he was in was swept away by rising waters.

Météo-France reports that up to 240 mm (9.44 inches) of rain inundated nearby Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. In one hour alone, 105 mm (4.13 inches) poured down.

Thunderstorms that pressed across France also kicked up strong winds, which knocked out power to thousands in southwestern France.

BFMTV reports 40,000 homes were without power at one point from Wednesday night to Thursday in the departments of Lot-et-Garonne and Dordogne.

The heavy rain and thunderstorms that left a trail of damage in France occurred along the leading edge of the cooler air that is finally bringing heat relief to western Europe.

Friday will feel like a typical August day should from the United Kingdom to France, Germany and western Poland.

Temperatures on Friday will be held below 21 C (70 F) for the second straight day in London, a feat that has not occurred since the middle of June.

In Berlin, a high of 25 C (77 F) is expected on Friday after temperatures once again soared past 32 C (90 F) on Thursday. Residents and visitors to Paris will enjoy highs around 23 C (lower 70s F).

90

Much needed dry weather will grace the departments of Bouches-du-Rhône and Gard, where temperatures will rise to just shy of 30 C (86 F).

Residents of western Europe should not get used to the turn to more comfortable weather. As quickly as the seasonably cooler air arrived, heat will make a comeback.

The heat will surge back across the Iberian Peninsula on Saturday before spreading to France on Sunday and then Germany and western Poland on Monday. Temperatures may rise back to the middle 20s C (middle to upper 70s F) in London and the rest of South East England Sunday into Tuesday.

A storm set to cut into the building heat may renew the risk of flooding across southern France by triggering drenching and gusty thunderstorms around Monday.

What is nuts is this: "Friday will feel like a typical August day should from the United Kingdom to France, Germany and western Poland."

Today is Friday and the low this morning was 15 C / 59 F. That's really NOT normal for the middle of August.

Earlier this evening out of Spain south of here. Lots of Lighting and thunder with large rain drops.

Other day, when driving back I saw very low clouds in the sky. Now days, it is high temperatures in the morning 80's and 90's and rain the evening (after 4 PM). I never saw the clouds so low. This reminded me of what Velokovsky wrote in "Worlds in collision", though clouds are not that low.

The tribes of Samoa in their legends refer to a catastrophe when "in days of old the heavens fell down." The heavens or the clouds were so low that the people could not stand erect without touching them
...
The clouds obscured the sky, and drifting very low, hung as a fog.
...
The low and slowly drifting clouds enshrouded the wanderers in the desert. These clouds dimly glowed at night; their upper portion reflected the sunlight. The glow being pale during the day and red after sunset, the Israelites were able to distinguish between day and night.17 They were protected by the clouds from the sun during the wandering in the desert, and according to the Midrashic literature, they saw sun and moon for the first time only at the end of the wandering.
...
The inhabitants of the islands in the South Seas relate that when the clouds lay only a few feet from the ground and "the sky was so close to the earth that men could not walk," "myriads of dragonflies with their wings severed the clouds confining the heavens to the earth."
...
Clouds of dust and gases enveloped the earth for a long time; it seemed that the sky had descended low. The earth groaned repeatedly because of the severe twisting and dislocation it had experienced. Only slowly and gradually did the clouds lift themselves from the ground. [ context of Venus interaction with earth]
.
Pretty scary to imagine.

Hurricane Lane, a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of close to 160 miles per hour (260 kilometers per hour) is continuing to approach the main Hawaiian Islands, where residents prepare for potentially life-threatening impacts, the National Hurricane Center said in a news bulletin on Wednesday.

Powerful Category 5 Hurricane Lane Approaches Hawaii - National Hurricane Center

"On the forecast track, the center of Lane will move very close to or over the main Hawaiian Islands from Thursday through Saturday," the bulletin said. "Slow weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is forecast to remain a dangerous hurricane as it draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands."

As of 2:00 a.m. local time, the center of the storm was located 480 miles (770 kilometers) to the southeast of Honolulu. The National Hurricane Center said Lane is moving toward the west-northwest at a speed of 9mph (15 km/h).

"A turn toward the northwest is expected later today, followed by a turn to the north-northwest on Thursday," the bulletin said.

A hurricane warning has been in effect for Hawaii Island, better known as the Big Island, since Tuesday, while Maui County and Oahu remain under a hurricane watch.

The National Hurricane Center explained Lane is expected produce rainfall of more than 20 inches (51 centimeters) in some areas,

which could lead to major flash flooding, landslides, and mudslides. Tornadoes and large water sprouts are also a possibility, it added.

Hawaii Governor David Ige, who signed an emergency proclamation in anticipation of the Hurricane Lane on Tuesday, is urging residents to prepare and plan.

Here in Southern Wisconsin, we're experiencing a respite from the very humid hot weather that was stuck here for a long time. However, the heavy rains from August 20-21 of strong downpours have left parts of Madison, the capital city, and surrounding areas, with all 4 of it's lakes at or above flood stage. This is the first time I've heard of this severe flooding in the Madison area since first moving to the state in 1974.

Widespread flooding reported...
At the peak of the storm, rain was falling at 2 to 4 inches per hour, said Marcia Cronce, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Sullivan.
Rainfall totals ranged from 11.63 inches in Middleton — the official rainfall total compiled by the National Weather Service — to an unofficial report of 15.33 inches at a rain gauge in Cross Plains for the 24-hour period between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
That was all from about a week ago, and I remember watching the radar and noting what a huge system it was, resembling a hurricane, but on land, with it's rain producing bands that would just park itself over an area and unload.

Now, about a week later, this area and SWestern and south central counties are struggling again after another deluge of rain swept through overnight on August 29th.

Not sure where to put this, but it is a satellite view of world precipitable water from the MIMIC satellite. I have included it because of the distortions seen over Australia, and curious to know if anyone has an explanation for them. They are still there even when I slowed the display down.
Note the anomalies over Australia:
