Crazy Storm Weather and Lightning - Global

Here in NE US, Though we were in spring officially, we haven't had good temperatures. We had couple of days of 80's last week . Suddenly temperatures dropped to 40's next 2 days. We are in 60's today, but lot of storms and created some flooding and travel delays.

Here in Massachusetts, we've had, basically, the same thing, except with lower temperatures. It gets to the 60s for a day or two and, then, the temperatures go into the 30s or 40s for several days and we have snow for a day or so with the cold temperatures remaining for a while. Sometimes it snows unexpectedly (to the weather people). Yesterday we had ice pellets. It's supposed to warm up though starting today. I've seen that in weather reports before and it chills back down to the 30s or 40s. Hoping that it's over now and we can get some real spring weather.

One guy here said it's like summer is on lay-away.

Storm in Moscow Leaves One Girl Dead, 17 People Injured

Saturday's storm that hit Moscow claimed a life of one girl, Sergei Sobyanin, the Russian capital's mayor, reported.

"Doctors didn't manage to save the girl, who was in extremely critical condition. I express my deep condolences to her parents," the mayor wrote.

At least 17 people sustained injuries in the hurricane that hit the Russian capital on Saturday, with 14 of them, including three children, having been taken to hospital, Alexei Khripun, the head of Moscow's Healthcare Department, told Sputnik.

Moscow was hit by a thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday afternoon. The storm is set to intensify and reach its peak in the early hours of Sunday.

Bad weather has caused train disruptions, dozens of flights have been delayed.

'Bad Weather' - Storm Leaves 73,000 Without Electricity in Central Russia

Violent thunderstorms have left some 73,000 people in and around 900 settlements in the Russian Central Federal District without electric power, the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s department in the Central Federal District said in Saturday statement.

"As a result of bad weather conditions … power supply to around 900 settlements, where around 73,000 residents live, has been disrupted on the territories of the Vladimir, Ivanovo, Tver, Smolensk, Ryazan, Moscow, and Tula regions," the statement read.

Some 5,000 workers and 1,800 pieces of equipment are involved in restoring electricity in the Russian Central Federal District, where these regions are located, the statement added.

The document noted that 12 people had been injured and 16 trees fell down in the district as a result of the bad weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Moscow United Electric Grid Company, providing electricity to the residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region, said it had restored power supply at all significant social infrastructure objects in the Russian capital after the major blackout caused by the thunderstorm.

The company added that over 580 workers and 170 pieces of equipment were involved in dealing with the consequences of the power outage.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Hydrometeorological Research Center issued the orange danger level for central Russia, meaning that natural disasters are likely in the area.

The Emergencies Ministry said subsequently that Moscow and the Moscow Region had been hit by heavy rain and snow with the speed of wind raising up to 25 meters per second (82 feet per second).

A late season snowfall covered higher elevations of Southern Montana in a thick blanket of white on the morning of April 23 2018. Heavy rain overnight quickly switched to wintry precipitation, dumping 6 - 8 inches of heavy wet snow on the resort town of Big Sky Montana. Snow blanketed roadways, reduced visibility, and piled up on pine trees, creating travel headaches for the morning commute, but the same heavy snow created a late season playground for winter sports enthusiasts. April marks the 8th straight month of accumulating snowfall in Big Sky, making locals question if winter will ever truly end.

Southern of Israel has been hit hard by a storm, causing flash floods as streams overflowed, killing hikers from a pre-army training program.

The nine hikers, eight female and one male, were part of a group of about 25 people who were hiking in the vicinity of the stream near the Dead Sea.

Currently one person is still missing and police volunteers and the Israeli army have formed search parties in which almost 700 people are now involved.

"We are now in a race against time to find the missing before it gets dark," said Eli Bin, the director general of the Magen David Adom medical rescue service, as reported by the newspaper Haaretz.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin took to Twitter to express support to the families of the victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to our brothers, children, our loved ones, and those in danger. We're following the situation in the south closely and are sending a warm embrace to the effected families. We will strengthen and lend help to the forces who are currently working to rescue, find and treat those injured. I ask all to please follow their instructions."

Earlier on Wednesday, two teenagers were killed in flash floods near the town of Negev, as the heavy water flows continued.

The north of the country saw more breaks in the showers but was hit with very strong winds and haze.

"Twenty-five millimeters of rain fell in Tel Aviv in just one hour. This is 25 percent more than the entire average rainfall for the entire month of April in the city, 20 millimeters.

Large amounts of rain also fell in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh, 45 to 50 millimeters," Haaretz reported.

April 27, 2018 - Egypt flooding sparks fury
Egypt flooding sparks fury

  • Homes in the Fifth Settlement, one of the capital’s most affluent districts, were flooded on Tuesday and Wednesday
  • The public reacted angrily to what they regarded as incompetent management by officials
CAIRO: Extreme weather brought Cairo to a standstill this week with severe flooding that caused buildings to collapse.

Homes in the Fifth Settlement, one of the capital’s most affluent districts, were flooded on Tuesday and Wednesday and hit by power cuts lasting hours. Motorists on Cairo’s busy ring road were forced to sleep in their cars after being stranded for more than eight hours.

And in Alexandria, Egypt’s second city, a man died when a billboard on the popular coastal promenade blew away and fell on him.

Trains were delayed because of heavy rainfall and the police rescued 30 students from the Hayah International Academy after they fell down a mountain during a trip to the Wadi Degla nature reserve.
The public reacted angrily to what they regarded as incompetent management by officials.

Rain caused extensive damage to Area Ragy’s home in the Fifth Settlement when water poured through the ceiling.

“Everything is ruined in my flat. Home appliances don’t work any more and I don’t know how I’m going to pay for the damage,” said Ragy, a 28-year-old housewife. “I kept calling 122 (the police emergency number) but they did not even answer. Who should I call then when something like that happens? We were stuck with no one to give us any kind of support. No one is telling us anything. People are always on their own.”

The city’s sanitation authority set up a hotline but claimed that it had received no complaints, however residents said that they were unable to reach anyone from the authority because the chief and his deputies had their mobile phones switched off.

Others complained about the lack of equipment to pump water and mud from streets built without storm drains, and posted pictures of themselves stuck in traffic with ankle-deep water inside their cars.

“My kids and I could not get home to Maadi (south Cairo) and had to sleep in our car,” Ahmed Abdel-Latif, a 32-year-old civil engineer, told Arab News. “The kids kept crying and I couldn’t do anything for them. We did not move a meter for two hours, and we are talking here about a wealthy neighborhood that is maybe less than ten years old ... This is how our modern roads look.”

Traffic police commander Abdellah Rashad confirmed that the road from Cairo to Ain Sokhna was also closed for 60 kilometers due to “heavy rain.”

People posted photos of the collapsed ceiling at the relatively new Point 90 mall near the American University as an example of the “weak infrastructure” of the high-priced buildings in the Fifth Settlement.

“The best place for agriculture now is the Fifth Settlement,” said one Facebook post. Another read: “Villas for sale with sea view.”

In the absence of any help from officials, activists launched their own information-gathering system using the hashtag #Kalak_Kajra_Jadidah (“so this is new Cairo”).

Mohamed Arfan, the minister of administrative supervision, made a surprise tour of the New Cairo area on Wednesday night and quizzed workers at the electricity station about the reasons for the power cuts. He said that the city had to be better prepared in future to avoid a repeat of the disaster.

Sanitation authority officials have been called in to explain themselves as part of an inquiry into why there was apparently so much negligence.

Watch: Clipper crews face 'phenomenal' 40+ foot waves in cross-ocean race to Seattle
Friday, April 27th 2018 Video
SEATTLE -- The 12 teams competing in this year's Clipper Race Round The World race safely made it to Seattle this week after a 5,500 mile, 28-day journey across the Pacific Ocean, but it wasn't just a battle among the teams; it was a battle with Mother Nature at times.

The teams, including one sponsored by "VisitSeattle.com", left Qingdao, China in late March on board 70-foot ocean-racing yachts, but found themselves battling a massive storm near Japan.

"The low (pressure center) after Japan was huge," said Simon Rowell, the race's meteorologist. Teams faced consistent winds of 55-65 knots (63-75 mph) with wind gusts over 80 knots (92 mph).

As you can imagine, in addition to having to dealing with the winds, a storm that magnitude would whip up some waves. Rowell said they measured over 14 meters -- 46 feet! -- at times. Take a peek:

"So, officially 'phenomenal,' " Rowell said, referencing the top rung of the Douglas Sea Scale. "I've been involved in one way or another with every Clipper Race since 2001, and that’s one of the two strongest systems we’ve had."

Dale Smyth, who is the skipper of the "Dare To Lead" yacht painted this picture during a race update: "Outside its blowing a solid 50 knots and gusting 70-75 in the hail squalls. The temperature is sub zero [Celsius]. The sea state is massive and regularly breaking. We Just hit a top speed of...wait for it 32.8Kts! This is where you tread lightly and feel like a gazelle running between a pride of lions. Safety is top priority, we stopped ‘racing’ 24hrs ago.

“On the flip side, this is my drug, my passion, the reason I sail. The scene outside could not be captured in a million frames or painted on a million canvasses. Your weekend yachtsman will never see nature unleashed like this. This is what makes us human, risk and reward. These wild ocean vistas get tattooed on your soul.”

But when you're racing via sails, most of the time the race's enemy is the opposite problem -- a lack of wind. While a captain's experience is key in noting wind patterns in the immediate area, Rowell does give teams a daily weather report to let them know generally what they're in for.

The data includes forecast charts showing current lows/highs and fronts and their projected movement over the next 2-4 days, a thermal infrared satellite image of the area of the ocean they're currently located, a map that hows current estimated surface winds as measured by satellite, and a general 24 hour forecast.

In addition, captains are provided one daily update of raw computer forecast model output data showing essential forecasting data such as wind, rain, sea level pressure and upper level temperatures -- a daily forecast for the entire ocean out to 7 days, and forecasts that show the next 5 days in 6 hour increments over the region they're heading.

For me, it’s all about system movement so as to keep in good wind for as long as possible," Rowell said. "As a former race skipper I try and think 'why do I care about this type of data?' when I send it out. They have enough to do without wasting time on something that I think is fascinating but really is only of academic use."

But even though all skippers get the same data, reading it properly can provide a strategic advantage.

“In a one design race there are not many things that can be done differently. How the crew sails the boat and where you sail the boat are two of these, and where you sail the boat depends on how you understand and apply the weather," Rowell said. “Each Skipper has their own way of doing using the information I send across, but they use this to help make decisions on a short term and then a long-term time frame for the race.”

The crews next head to New York City via the Panama Canal for the 7th leg of the eight-leg race. From there, they will head back across the Atlantic Ocean to where the race started: Liverpool, England. The team that has accumulated the most points over each leg will be awarded the coveted Clipper Race Trophy.

The Clipper Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69. His aim was to allow anyone, regardless of previous sailing experience, the chance to embrace the thrill of ocean racing. So if this sounds like a challenge that would interest you, no previous experience is necessary. The group says 40 percent of of the 700+ crew members involved in this year's race are novices and have never sailed before starting a comprehensive training program.

More Than 25 People Dead in Dust Storm in India's North - Reports (VIDEO)

A powerful dust storm and rains have hit Delhi, grounding flights, uprooting trees and bringing traffic on the city's roads to a standstill, several days after an alert was issued over north India for a massive storm, New Deli TV reports.

The storm, which had wind speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour (45 miles per hour), demolished dozens of homes and destroyed power lines in northern Uttar Pradesh state, a government official said.

At least 25 people have lost their lives and dozens more injured, according to the Times of India paper.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said her government would grant assistance to the families of the departed, as well as to those whose houses have been damaged.

"We do not have control over nature. We will not be able to bring back those who have died, but our government will be beside these families and help them in every possible manner," she said.

Colorado Hail Swath, Not Snow, Was Visible From the Air Days After Monday's Storm | The Weather Channel

  • A May 14 thunderstorm in northern Colorado laid down a swath of hail that could be seen from the air.
  • This hail swath remained on the ground for at least two days.
A series of hailstorms in northern Colorado earlier this week deposited enough hail to leave swaths that appeared like areas of snow as seen from several flights.

One strip of small hail near Wellington, Colorado, was flown over by Jane Carpenter, a pilot at Leading Edge Flight Training, located at the Northern Colorado Regional Airport. She documented the event in photos provided to KUSA 9News meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen.

00:57 Hail Leaves Trail Across Colorado Meteorologist Ari Sarsalari shows a path of a hailstorm across Colorado.

The hailstorm struck Monday afternoon near the town about 60 miles north of downtown Denver, producing enough small hail to cover a short stretch of Interstate 25.

A high-resolution satellite image from NASA's Terra satellite taken the following day showed the approximately 2.5-mile-long swath clearly visible under a cloudless sky east of the Colorado High Country.

The Wellington, Colorado, small hail swath, denoted by the arrow, as seen from NASA's Terra satellite on May 15, 2015, one day after the hailstorm struck near the northern Colorado town. The swath was estimated to be 2.5 miles long. (NASA)

Carpenter flew over the swath Tuesday morning and said in a Facebook post that in 25 years of flying, she had never seen anything quite like it from the air.

A small area of the original hail swath remained on the ground into Wednesday despite a high of 83 degrees at nearby Northern Colorado Regional Airport, according to a photo shared by Carpenter.

Merritt Dupon, who lives in the hail swath, told Reppenhagen there was up to 2 feet of accumulated hail measured in some areas.

This wasn't the only hail swath on the High Plains.

Several inches of hail as large as quarters prompted snow plows to be called out in The Pinery, a southern Denver metro suburb.

Multiple hail swaths in northern Douglas, northern Elbert and far eastern Arapahoe counties could also be seen in satellite images as skies cleared later Monday afternoon.

Some of these could also be seen from the air, as Katie Sloop noted on her flight to Denver Monday afternoon.

A much longer hail swath, or several individual swaths, were deposited in western Kansas and might have stretched into parts of eastern Colorado Monday.

Up to 6 inches of baseball-size hail accumulated in Lane County, Kansas. The huge hailstones smashed windows in two homes north of Leoti and south of Sharon Springs.

(MORE: Hail is the Most Underrated Costly Weather Disaster)

That evening, the cold accumulated hail contrasting with warmer ground made the hail swath visible in infrared satellite imagery.

The High Plains of Colorado and Kansas are among the areas most frequently impacted by hail each year in the United States.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, hail at least 1 inch in diameter falls nine to 13 days each year, on average, along the Front Range of Colorado and High Plains of Kansas and Nebraska.

'Mother of thunderstorms' hits UK as lightning strikes 20,000 times | Metro News
Sunday 27 May 2018 8:52 am Pic's and Video Lightning and thunder across London and South East

Lightning lit up the night sky across large parts of Britain in a weather phenomenon dubbed the ‘mother of all thunderstorms’ by meteorologists.

lightning.gif

It is estimated that the UK was hit by lightning between 15,000 and 20,000 times – including one bolt hitting the Shard in London, in a dramatic moment captured by photographers.

Heavy rain also lashed southern England and the Midlands as the incredible wave of lightning rolled in.

Met Office meteorologist Charlie Powell said: ‘Temperatures overnight did not fall much below 15 or 16 degrees, for the end of May that’s a pretty hot and humid night so everything was primed.

‘We had some storms coming in from northern France and some building up in the Channel and they sort of spread out and have been working their way in.

‘It looks like there just one huge area of thundery showers that worked across London just before midnight.’

BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker shared his enthusiasm on Twitter, writing: “Mother of all #thunderstorms now over London. Oh boy! This UTTERLY INSANE.

‘I’ve never seen a storm with such frequent lightning in my life I don’t think. Mostly sheet lightning and not too loud but flashes are spectacular.’

The storm in the capital included Big Ben and Westminster being illuminated by the sudden flashes of light.

And more than half an inch of rain fell in just an hour at Kew Gardens in south west London.

The London Fire Brigade said it had taken more than 500 weather-related calls overnight, although the majority were down to flooding and no fires were reported to have been started by lighting strikes.

Some 17 flood alerts were issued for parts of the Thames Valley, while West Midlands and Bedfordshire fire services warned motorists of the risks of driving on flood-hit roads.

Nearly 1,000 properties in the Midlands have been left without power as a result of the lightning, Western Power Distribution said.

Five properties were struck by lightning in Warwickshire, while a telephone box burst into flames after a BT pole was hit in Dawlish, Devon.

The weather has also caused chaos at Stansted Airport with passengers reporting huge delays.

In a statement, the airport said engineers are working to repair the aircraft fuelling system after it was damagedb in the storm.

It said: ‘Due to a lightning strike, the aircraft fuelling system is currently unavailable. Engineers are currently on site working to resolve the issue but flights are subject to diversion, delay or cancellation.
