His 1967 book, Personality-Shaping Through Positive Disintegration, has long been out of print and difficult to find (used copies go for around $400). So we're happy to announce that Red Pill Press has just published a brand-new edition, complete with extra material, previously unpublished. It's available in print and Kindle formats here:

For psychologist and psychiatrist Kazimierz Dabrowski, personality is not a given – it must be consciously created and developed by the individual. In his second English-language book, Personality-Shaping Through Positive Disintegration, first published in 1967, Dr. Dabrowski presents a comprehensive treatment of personality that is still relevant, perhaps more so today than when it was first written. Here Dabrowski describes personality’s individual and universal characteristics, the methods involved in shaping it, and case studies of famous personalities (including Augustine and Michelangelo) demonstrating the empirical and normative nature of personality development.

Included in this edition are the original introduction, written by former APA president O. Hobart Mowrer, an appendix detailing a study on gifted children and outstanding abilities conducted by Dr. Dabrowski, as well as previously unpublished biographical pieces analyzing the personalities of Beethoven, Kierkegaard, and Unamuno.

Grounded in Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration, Personality-Shaping introduces the concepts at the heart of the theory and at the heart of human potential, creativity, social service, inner conflict, mental illness, and personal growth. Dabrowski’s all-embracing perspective is at once a fresh alternative to the one-dimensional theories and trends pervasive in the field of psychology, and a full statement in its own right of all those aspects of human nature too often marginalized, ignored, or denied – a revolutionary and heartfelt product of Dr. Dabrowski’s incisive observations and all-embracing vision.

Kazimierz Dabrowski (September 1, 1902–November 26, 1980) was a psychologist, psychiatrist, educator, and prolific writer, publishing over 30 books and 250 papers in various languages during his lifetime. He received degrees in medicine (University of Geneva, 1929) and psychology (Poznan, 1931), certificates in psychoanalysis (under Wilhelm Stekel in Vienna, 1934) and public health (Harvard University, 1934), and habilitations in children’s psychotherapy (University of Geneva, 1934) and psychiatry (University of Wrocław, 1948), among other honours and achievements. In addition to Stekel, Dabrowski studied under some of the most prominent figures in his field, both in Poland and abroad, including Jean Piaget, Pierre Janet, Édouard Claparède, and Stefan Blachowski. In 1935 he founded the Institute of Mental Hygiene in Warsaw, Poland, which he directed until 1948. Under Nazi occupation, he and his colleagues used the facility to hide Polish resistance soldiers, refugees, doctors and priests involved in the underground movement. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942. In 1950, the communist authorities arrested him and his wife, and he was incarcerated for 18 months. After his release, strict restraints were placed on his activities until he was declared ‘rehabilitated’ in 1956. Throughout his career he taught and lectured at many universities around the world, including a professorship in experimental psychology at Warsaw in 1956 and, from 1964 on, the position of Professor and Director of Clinical Research and Internship at the University of Alberta. He also served as Visiting Professor at Laval University in Quebec from 1968. He passed away in Warsaw in 1980 after suffering a heart attack in 1979.

We discussed the book, Dabrowski, and his theory on the previous edition of The Truth Perspective. You can listen to it here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/sottradionetwork/2015/06/06/the-truth-perspective--dabrowskis-theory-of-positive-disintegration--6-june

It was an enlightening episode of The Truth Perspective this week, so a massive thankyou to everyone who contributed. I am still finding it difficult to comprehend a lot of what was said, although this may change after studying the work directly. I actually cannot wait to dig into this book!

The book edited by Mendaglio contains a collection of essays by various authors who are connected in one way or another with Dabrowski and his work. There's a page briefly describing it on CassWiki.

Mendaglio's book is a good addition to Dabrowski's own work, though I think the newly republished book by Dabrowski goes more directly into the heart of the matter.

Thanks Psalehesost! I'll just get my hands on both.

Ditto, thanks for another piece of amazing work from you all! I'll be buying a copy ASAP too.

Hi! Good material, supportive in understanding the process and value of suffering in a conscience way. Perhaps it will be added to my book list as well, I'm sure it would be a valuable addition. I am quite involved in this process and consider it to be so important. To understand it better would go a long way in making precious progress. The list is so long though, whew! (my book list) I read last night, Laura's thread on Dabrowskis' work. So good to understand this more thoroughly.

I'm so enjoying the sott interviews and current events reports. Its still a very new source for me and one I intend to listen to more. The material at the end on gov. Scott Walker was interesting, sheesh, what a dictator is right, really awful person (emotional reaction!) I remember the senators leaving the state to avoid the vote. I've a comment on the statement about how he keeps getting reelected even though he's such a jerk. I don't have any trust in the election process in the US. From all evidence coming out over the years starting with the Bush scandal and vote manipulation in Florida exposed by Greg Palast and later the remote tampering of computerized voting machines exposed by Bev Harris(Black Box Voting: Ballot Tampering in the 21st Century) . Whose really doing the voting? So its very possible this man is not being re-elected over and over. He seems to have the character traits that some would like to see in positions of power, so fill in the blank on whose tampering with the vote.

To bad sott talks cant be downloaded onto mp3 since I'd have more time to listen then.

Thanks for all your work another great show.

You can download the shows. Just right click on the 'cloud with an arrow in it' button on the top right of the page of the episode you want to download, and then click "save link as". (It's right below the login button, on the right side of the show progress bar.)
