Over 800,000 Kenyans have been affected by devastating floods and rains in Kenya, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.

UN: Disastrous Flooding Affects Thousands in Kenya

"The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in Kenya has risen to 186, and an estimated 800,000 people have been affected, according to the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS). This includes an estimated 300,000 who have been displaced and nearly 100 injured, although many of those displaced have begun to return home," the statement read on Thursday.

About 18,725 children affected by the disaster will require assistance to ensure their physical and psychosocial well-being, the document added.

Over 739 schools were closed temporarily due to major infrastructure damage caused by the floods or because they are housing displaced persons. The situation led to the disruption in learning for over 100,000 children, the OCHA pointed out.

Mudslides resulted in multiple roads blocked and motorists stranded. Moreover, the landslides also destroyed houses in central Kenya, forcing people to evacuate from the area.

The OCHA expressed concern over the increased risk of health emergencies, including cholera outbreaks, due to poor sanitation and lack of clean water in the areas damaged by the floods.

The document added, citing the Kenyan Health Ministry, that as of Monday, cholera cases had been reported in eight counties, including Elgeyo Marakwet, Garissa, Isiolo, Kiambu, Nairobi, Tharaka Nithi, Turkana and West Pokot.

The UN agency suggested that the cases of malaria could also increase in the affected areas due to continued rainfall.

Kenya has been affected by heavy rainfall since March. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department data, in some areas of the country, seasonal rainfall between March and May was the highest recorded over the past 50 years.

WATCH: Huge Fissure Opens in Kenya, Could Signal Continental Split

Overnight on Monday, a 20-meter-crack in the Earth emerged in an area west of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. The opening of the mysterious crack, which is continuing to grow, shook the ground in the area and caused part of the Nairobi-Narok highway to collapse.

Smithsonian Institution geologist Ben Andrews says the crack was caused by movement of the Earth's tectonic plates, parts of the Earth's crust.

"We're seeing a crack that in all likelihood formed over many thousands of years or hundreds of thousands of years," said Andrews, CBS reported.

The Nubian tectonic plate covers almost the entire African continent while the Somali plate includes half of the coast of Africa, from the Gulf of Aden in the north to Durban, South Africa, in the south. These two plates are pulling away from each other at a rate of about 2.5 cm a year on average. This means that the shifting process could cause Africa to split in two — though not for some 50 million years — resulting in Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and half of Ethiopia moving away from the rest of the continent. These countries are located in an area referred to by geologists as the Great Rift Valley.

The current rift appears to be in the general area of the border of the the Nubian and Somali plates.

Other geologists, however, like Wendy Bohon, have far less world-shattering explanations: she believes the crack was created simply by heavy rains.

"I think it's an Earth fissure, the same sort of thing that you see in Arizona after heavy rain storms. They're the result of heavier torrential rains that come and wash away large portions of the dirt in the ground. To me it looks pretty cut and dry. It wasn't a result of the tectonics, it was the result of the weather," Bohon told CBS News.

The outermost part of the Earth, called the lithosphere, is made up of tectonic plates that drift along the surface at different speeds. When they collide or separate, they cause earthquakes; over time, the same processes form rifts, ridges, mountains and chasms. Scientists believe these plates slide slowly across the liquid surface of the Earth's mantle, which is made of ultra-hot liquid rock beginning around 80 to 190 kilometers beneath the surface.

Wed Jun 13, 2018 - Deadly Monsoon Storms Batter Rohingya Camps in Bangladesh
Farsnews

A landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains killed at least 12 people in Bangladesh's border district of Cox's Bazar, which is home to around a million Rohingya refugees.

The victims of Tuesday's incident were buried under mud when surrounding hills gave way under a deluge of rain, Al-Jazeera reported.

Eleven people died in Naniarchar including a family of four, while several people remained missing, district administrator Mamunur Rashid told the AFP news agency.

Aid agencies have been warning of the potential for a humanitarian catastrophe over the coming months as heavy rains lash an area home to the world's largest refugee camp.

Landslides have so far killed at least 13 people this week, including a Rohingya boy who was crushed to death by a collapsing mud wall at the Kutupalong refugee camp on Monday.

Some 200,000 Rohingya who live on hills around the refugee camps are at risk of death or injury from monsoon rains, officials and relief agencies have said.

Many of the hills around the settlements have been cleared of trees to build shelters, making the land highly unstable.

Nearly 29,000 people have been moved to new locations ahead of the monsoon but the risk of a tragedy remains high.

Caroline Glick from the UN Refugee Agency said many refugees were at risk of landslides as they lived on steep slopes.

"In just one area of the camp I discovered almost 20 families have had to be relocated and almost 30 houses have been damaged due to landslides," she added.

The region is forecast to receive 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) of rainfall during the monsoon season - roughly triple what Britain gets in a year.

Last year, monsoon rains triggered landslides in Cox's Bazar and the nearby Chittagong hill tracts, killing at least 170 people.

There are also fears flooding could spread disease in the refugee camps.

About 700,000 Muslim-majority Rohingya have fled neighbouring Myanmar since last August after an army crackdown which the UN says amounted to "ethnic cleansing".

They join around 300,000 refugees from earlier violence in mainly Buddhist Myanmar, where the Rohingya are a persecuted and rendered stateless.

Severe, unseasonable weather struck Israel on Wednesday morning, flooding the streets of cities in the South. Israel Public Radio meteorologist Sharon Wexler reported on social media that Ashkelon received 36mm of rainfall and Yad Mordechai 48mm.

Eliran Jerbi, running for Sderot's city council, reported that whole streets in Sderot where flood due to the unexpected rainfall.

Jerbi blamed the lack of a functioning sewer system in the city for the floods. "Half an hour of rain and the cars are floating," he wrote on Facebook.

Southern Israel Flooded as Torrential Rains Hit Country (VIDEO)

Heavy downpours in summer are not common for Israel; however, this year the rare natural phenomenon has resulted in the flooding of many Israeli cities and settlements. Water has submerged the first floors of buildings, with streams rushing through city streets.

Many residents of Sderot and Ashkelon were unable to get to work in the morning, as it was impossible to drive through the city. Parked cars were immersed in a meter of water. It is believed that the storm runoff was clogged and that therefore the rain turned the streets into rivers.

In the kibbutz Dorota the rainfall amounted to 64 mm, which is now the record for June since observations began.

In some cities in the region of Galilee, bad weather and fierce winds resulted in power outages.

Authorities have warned that on Wednesday and Thursday, floods are also possible in the Dead Sea area.

The phenomenon is not typical for Israel, where the rainy season ends in March, but weather forecasters were not surprised, as heavy rains can hit the country once every few years. This time, however, they turned out to be particularly heavy.

Emergencies were declared and a woman's death was confirmed by officials following a round of torrential rainfall that led to flooding in the Pittsburgh area.

Southwest of Pittsburgh, officials in the town of Bridgeville said they recovered a woman's body in McLaughlin Run Creek Thursday morning, CBS Pittsburgh reported. She was later identified as 64-year-old Wendy Abbott of Upper St. Clair, the Observer-Reporter said.

Officials also told CBS Pittsburgh that swift-water rescue teams performed more than 60 water rescues in Allegheny County as floodwaters rose Wednesday.

More Flooding Possible in South Texas Before Dry Conditions Return Friday
Jun 21 2018 02:15 PM EDT Tweets Pic's:
Heavy rainfall returned to parts of southern Texas on Thursday morning, prompting additional water rescues in locations that have been swamped for days.

Another flash flood emergency was declared Thursday morning, this time for south-central Hidalgo County, Texas. Local reports said water rescues became necessary as vehicles became stranded in floodwaters in the Mission area.

More than 15 inches of rain has fallen in some parts of Hidalgo County since Tuesday.

Along the coast, residents who continue to rebuild their lives in the wake of Hurricane Harvey were once again dealing with floodwaters invading their homes.

"It’s not good," Orange County resident Chris Jenkins, who just moved back into his repaired home, told KHOU.com. "Just coming and seeing everything floating on the floor – nothing can prepare you for it."

Street flooding was reported in Roma, Texas, early Thursday with a water depth of 1 to 2 feet.

High water rescues requiring boats occurred early Wednesday evening near Los Fresnos due to flooding. San Benito and Rio Hondo also reported flooding.

Several rescues were also forced by heavy rain and flooding in various neighborhoods in Brownsville Wednesday evening.

A local state of disaster was declared in Hidalgo County, Texas, Wednesday evening due to heavy rainfall and flooding, according to KRGV-TV. Hidalgo County contains the towns of McAllen, Edinburg and Weslaco.

The National Weather Service issued two flash flood emergencies in South Texas Wednesday following 6 to 14 inches of rainfall early this week, but both have expired.

The heavy rain caused roads to crumble in McAllen, the location of the first flash flood emergency. Multiple road closures were reported in Hidalgo County, including near Mercedes and in Weslaco.

Some communities in McAllen and surrounding communities have seen 4 to 8 inches of rain. Weslaco picked up more than 11 inches of rain.

An elderly woman was rescued in rising waters in McAllen. At least 15 people were also rescued Wednesday in the town of Mercedes, Texas, Lt. Johnny Hernandez from the Department of Public Safety told KRGV.

In Weslaco, local emergency management reports the Las Brisas neighborhood was evacuated, according to the NWS. Several shelters were opened to take in evacuees, according to the Associated Press.

An earlier emergency was prompted by heavy rainfall in Harlingen, which saw 14.65 inches of rain in the 72 hours ending 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday. Lighter rainfall this afternoon has allowed the flash flood emergency to expire.

Cars were reported to be submerged in floodwaters along frontage roads of Interstate 2 from Mercedes to Harlingen. Water has also inundated multiple structures in Mercedes and Donna, according to an NWS report.

Cameron County has opened the Los Fresnos dome for those that need shelter, according to the Valley Morning Star.

Some communities in Brownsville have seen 4 to 5 inches of rain since Monday.

Several roads and summer schools remain closed as of Wednesday afternoon in Corpus Christi due to the heavy rainfall. As of Thursday morning, 20.65 inches of rainfall has been reported just west of Corpus Christi.

Flash flooding occurred for a time Wednesday evening in the Houston metro area near Cy-Fair. A slow-moving line of thunderstorms moved northeastward across southeastern Texas with high rainfall rates.

But after the rains stopped in the town hit hard by Hurricane Harvey last August, local officials were relieved that it wasn't worse.

"This was kind of a walk in the park compared to Harvey," Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs told the Associated Press.

Flooding also occurred on the upper Texas coast from heavy rain late Monday and again on Tuesday. Almost 11 inches of rain soaked the Beaumont-Port Arthur area Monday and Tuesday.

Vehicles stalled in Port Arthur due to street flooding Tuesday morning. In nearby Bridge City, floodwaters reportedly entered some homes, according to an NWS storm report.

Elsewhere, more than a foot of rainfall accumulated near Falfurrias in South Texas during a 30-hour period between Monday and midday Tuesday.

Premont picked up 11-plus inches of rain Monday night through Tuesday morning. However, the rain gauge at that location overflowed, so the precise amount of rain is unknown, according to the NWS.

Tuesday evening, several high water rescues were reported in the Corpus Christi area with many roads flooded. A storm total of 13.80 inches of rain has been reported in the city as of 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday.

Flooding forced road closures in the Alice area and other spots in South Texas on Tuesday.

Radar imagery shows showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall across southern Texas as of early afternoon Thursday.

Virginia Flooding Closes Richmond Airport for More Than Two Hours; Water Rescues Reported
Today / Video / 00:51
Officials were forced to shut down Richmond International Airport for more than two hours and numerous roadways were closed Friday morning as the city experienced its second-wettest day on record.

Airport officials announced the closure Friday morning as parts of the runway flooded, and the entry to an on-site parking deck was also inundated. The airport resumed operations at 9 a.m. EDT.
Road closures were also reported in the area as several major highways, including Interstate 64, were covered in floodwaters, according to WWBT-TV.

From midnight to 6 a.m. Friday, 7.25 inches of rain fell at the airport, according to the National Weather Service. This tops the record for wettest June calendar day on record and is the second-highest single-day rainfall total for the city, said weather.com meteorologist Linda Lam. The current record is 8.79 inches, which fell on Aug. 12, 1955.

"A mostly stationary front was draped across portions of the Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic, including the Richmond area, early Friday," Lam added. "This boundary was the focus for showers and thunderstorms. One particular thunderstorm brought intense rainfall to the Richmond area, where more than 7 inches of rain fell from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Friday."

Northwest of Richmond, water rescues were reported in the town of Louisa, the NWS also said. Passengers in seven vehicles in Henrico also had to be rescued, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Iowa Train Derailment Leaks Crude Oil into Floodwaters; Homes Evacuated | The Weather Channel
3 hours ago weather.com Video / 00:50
A freight train derailed and leaked crude oil from at least one of 31 tankers in northwestern Iowa early Friday morning, raising concerns that the residential water supply could be affected.

No injuries were reported after the cars derailed at about 4:30 a.m. Friday morning just south of Doon in Lyon County, BNSF railroad spokesman Andy Williams said.

Officials haven't said if floodwaters from the swollen Little Rock River caused the derailment. After the area received 5 to 7 inches of rainfall on Wednesday, the river rose quickly, and another downpour struck the area on Thursday.

In this aerial drone image taken from video and provided by the Sioux County Sheriff's Office, tanker cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed about a mile south of Doon, Iowa, Friday, June 22, 2018. (Sioux County Sheriff's Office via AP)

A broadening sheen of oil spread near several of the tankers, which had piled up across the track and earthen berm, some submerged in the water.

News of the spill was enough to prompt officials in Rock Valley, a small city about 5 miles southwest of the derailment, to shut off all the city's drinking water wells. The water towers also will be drained as a precaution, said Rock Valley public information officer Travis Olson.

"I don't know how long that will be," he said. "It sounds like the cleanup is going to take a while."

Williams said he was unsure how much oil leaked and how many of the cars were leaking. Lyon County Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep said the oil was being carried downstream into the Rock River a few hundred yards west of the derailment.

No information was immediately available on how much oil each of the tankers was carrying. Cleanup crews were dispatched to the site.

Vander Stoep said four homes near the site have been evacuated.

(MORE: South Texas Flooding Leads to Water Rescues, Emergency Declaration)

The Rock River has already carried some oil to Rock Valley, nearly 5 miles southwest of the derailment, said Ken Hessenius with the Iowa Natural Resources Department. State crews are trying to determine how fast the oil was traveling south. The Rock River joins the Big Sioux River before merging into the Missouri River at Sioux City.

The task difficulty is compounded by the spreading floodwater, he said.

"The river, instead of being 100 yards wide, is now maybe a half-mile wide" in spots, Hessenius said.

"Our first major concerns are public water supplies," he said, adding that several towns that draw water from shallow wells near the Rock River have been alerted about possible contamination.

Doon is about 40 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where several rain-swollen rivers overflowed Thursday. The National Weather Service has forecast flooding in the area into the weekend.

Heavy rains cause deadly floods and landslides in Mexico
Posted by TW on June 22, 2018
At least 7 people have died in weather-related incidents across Mexico over the past 7 days, including 6 who died in the past two days.

Heavy rain was caused by a tropical disturbance over the western Gulf of Mexico which affected NE Mexico and parts of Texas, US.

A total of 40 neighborhoods reported flood damage in the city of Reynosa, state of Tamaulipas. Three people died in the state since June 2, two of them in separate incidents after they accidentally touched an electrical cable and one after he drowned in his car.

Within 72 hours to June 21, Reynosa recorded 245 mm (9.6 inches) of rain, Matamoros 180 mm (7 inches), and Díaz Ordaz 170 mm (6.7 inches), according to data provided by the FloodList.

Around 40 people were evacuated in the state of Guanajuato where heavy rain caused flooding in several districts. The worst affected was the district of Silao. One man was killed in community of Llanos de Santa Ana after he was hit by rocks that fell from a ridge next to the Valenciana-Cristo Rey highway after being dislodged due to heavy rain.

2 people died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the state of Aguascalientes after they were trapped in the vehicle caught up in flood waters in the city of Aguascalientes. The city recorded 140 mm (5.5 inches) of rain on June 20 and 21.

At least 32 neighborhoods were affected and more than 70 shelters were opened in the city to attend to those forced to evacuate their homes.

Almost 2 million people, mainly in western Japan, have been told to evacuate their homes, according to the fire and disaster management agency, but NHK said the figure had risen to nearly 3.2 million.

The Japan Meteorological Agency upgraded its alert system to the highest level – only issued when the amount of rain is expected to be the highest in decades – in large areas of western Japan, while lifting the warning in other regions.

Among the missing were five people buried when houses collapsed in Hiroshima prefecture. In Ehime prefecture, a woman was found dead on the second floor of a home hit by a landslide, Kyodo said.

Yamaguchi prefecture, another area hit by the heavy rain, alerted people to heed evacuation warnings and act quickly.

The Xepian-Xe Nam Noy hydropower dam, which is still under construction, collapsed on Monday night, according to the Laos News Agency.

Several people have been confirmed dead, and more than 6,600 made homeless, the official news agency KPL reported.

The neighbouring villages of Yai Thae, Hinlad, Mai, Thasengchan, Tha Hin, and Samong bore the brunt of flooding, which has reportedly destroyed thousands of homes.

The local authorities put out a call for relief aid for flood victims while bringing boats to help evacuate people from the danger zones.

Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith called on government organisations, the police and the military to assist in the emergency relief effort in the South-Eastern province of Attapeu.

The dam was reportedly slated to start energy supplies in 2019, providing almost all the energy produced to neighboring Thailand.

Laos, one of Asia’s poorest countries, aims to become the “battery of Asia” by selling power to its neighbors through a series of hydropower dams.

Tue Jul 24, 2018 - Vietnam Flood Death Toll Rises to 27
Farsnews

The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by tropical storm Son Tinh rose to 27 on Tuesday, and seven people are still missing, according to the government’s Disaster Management Authority.

With a long coastline, Vietnam is prone to destructive storms and flooding, with 389 people killed last year in natural disasters such as floods and landslides, according to government statistics, Reuters reported.

Though tropical storm Son Tinh weakened to a tropical depression by the time it reached Vietnam last week, the torrential rains it brought caused heavy flooding and landslides in many parts of northern Vietnam. Some areas in the outskirts of the capital Hanoi remain submerged.

The remote mountainous province of Yen Bai has suffered the heaviest casualties in the latest floods and landslides, with 13 people reportedly killed, 18 injured and four missing, the disaster management agency said in a statement.

The floods and landslides have also damaged and submerged more than 12,000 houses, more than 90,000 hectares (222,395 acres) of crops, mostly paddy, and cut off traffic to several parts of northern Vietnam, the agency added.

Last month, heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides which killed 24 people in the remote and mountainous Northern provinces of Lai Chau and Ha Giang.

The agency urged the authorities and people to keep vigilant for more floods and landslides over the coming days.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, heavy rain is forecast to continue in the Northern part of the country until early August

Earlier, several large wildfires occurred in Greece, according to the latest data, with a death toll of 83 people; in the Attica region, a state of emergency was declared.

The floods were caused by a strong storm that hit Athens on Thursday. The police blocked, for security reasons, the main roads in the suburbs of Kisiphia and Nea Eritrea.

The fire service of Athens received 140 calls from citizens asking for help, in particular regarding pumping out water from flooded houses.

Recently, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced a three-day mourning for the dead in the country's wildfires; the Greek prosecutor's office has begun investigating the fires.

Rescue teams continue to search for missing people.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Torrential monsoon rains have killed at least 26 people in flooding, landslides and house collapses in the southern Indian state of Kerala with more than 15,500 people taking shelter in state-run relief camps.

Top elected state official Pinarayi Vijayan says the flood situation has become “very grim’” with the opening of sluice gates of nearly two dozen overflowing water reservoirs.

Shibu, a relief official, said Friday nearly 200 army soldiers joined rescue workers in the worst-hit Ayannkulu, Idukki and Wayanad areas.
At least 26 people have been killed in the state since Wednesday, said Shibu, who uses one name.

Monsoon rains kill hundreds of people every year in India. The monsoon season runs from June to September.
