The heaviest monsoon rains to lash India in 25 years have killed more than 1,600 people since June, government data showed on Tuesday, as authorities battled floods in two northern states and muddy waters swirled inside a major city.

The monsoon, which typically lasts between June and September, has already delivered 10% more rain than a 50-year average, and is expected to withdraw only after early October, more than a month later than usual.

On Monday, relief workers rescued Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi from his home in Patna. Video footage showed him dressed in shorts and a t-shirt as he was brought out on a raft along with his family members.

Data released by the federal home ministry shows that 1,673 people have died because of floods and heavy rains this year, as of Sept. 29.

October 03, 2019 - BUSAN, South Korea: At least six people were killed and several others missing after Typhoon Mitag lashed South Korea with heavy rain and strong winds, authorities said Thursday.

The storm hit southern parts of the country on Wednesday night, prompting flood warnings and triggering landslides in affected areas.

A woman in her 70s died after she was swept away by strong winds in the southeastern city of Pohang while another woman was killed after heavy rain caused her house to collapse as she slept, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said.

A total of six people were killed across the country but the toll was expected to rise with several people missing. In the southern port city of Busan — one of the hardest hit areas — around 600 rescue workers were trying to locate four people believed to be trapped beneath a landslide.

“An enormous amount of sand and earth slid down several hundred meters and instantly buried a house and a restaurant,”
said a witness quoted by Yonhap news agency.

More than 100 homes were flooded and over 1,500 families evacuated their houses in advance, the ministry said. Mitag is the 18th typhoon this year and seventh to hit the Korean peninsula.

Six people were killed when typhoon Mitag passed through the country on Thursday, South Korea's government said. Some of the six were underneath collapsed structures and others drowned, it said.

Landslide at gold mine in eastern Congo kills at least 16
October 2, 2019 - GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo - A landslide at a shuttered gold mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo killed at least 16 people on Wednesday, the provincial governor said.

Dozens of people die in Congo every year because of old-fashioned and unregulated mining methods that compromise safety.

“There was an accident at the Kampene mine, and for the moment we were able to get 16 bodies from the site of the landslide,” Auguy Musafiri, governor of Maniema province stated. “What surprises us is that the activities continued in this mine, which had been closed by the provincial division of mines.”

More than 20 people were working on the gold seam at the time of the accident, suggesting more bodies may be found, said Stéphane Kamundala, a local activist.

At least 43 illegal miners died in June in a landslide at a copper and cobalt mine run by Glencore in southern Congo, highlighting the dangers run by informal miners, who burrow dozens of meters below ground with rudimentary tools.

Dam failure kills at least 11 at Siberian gold mine

Sat. October 19, 2019 - MOSCOW: A dam failure at a gold mine killed at least 11 miners early on Saturday in Siberia, about 160 km south of the city of Krasnoyarsk, the Russian investigative committee has said.

“Eleven people were killed in the accident, according to preliminary information, (and) 14 injured workers were taken to hospitals,” local investigators said in a statement.

More than a dozen gold miners are still missing, Interfax news agency reported, citing emergency services.

Heavy rains apparently caused erosion of the dam, Interfax quoted a local official as saying. Several small cabins, where workers lived, were flooded and washed away, Interfax said.

Dam collapse kills at least 15 gold miners in Siberia
October 19, 2019 - MOSCOW - At least 15 gold miners were killed on Saturday when a dam collapsed, flooding an artisanal mining encampment in a remote part of Siberia, officials said.

Heavy rains had weakened the dam and water broke through, sweeping away several cabins where the artisan miners lived, about 160 km (100 miles) south of the city of Krasnoyarsk.

President Vladimir Putin ordered all necessary measures to be taken to help those affected, to identify the cause of the disaster and prevent any impact on a nearby residential area, Interfax quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

Russia is one of the world’s top gold producers with most of its output coming from large professional industrial mines. However, alluvial production, which is usually operated by small firms, still contributes some of the country’s gold.

Alluvial or artisanal gold mining in Russia is usually small-scale, but is still conducted by officially registered firms which are supposed to abide by health and safety rules.

Krasnoyarsk officials said in a statement that water released by the dam partially flooded two dormitories of the rotational camp in which 74 people lived, adding that 13 people were still missing.

A Russian investigative committee said it had launched a criminal probe into violation of safety rules at the gold mining spot, while local authorities said the collapsed dam was not registered by official bodies.

Interfax said the miners were part of Siberian privately-held Sibzoloto, which unites several artisanal mining teams.

Storms and floods. Trains blocked, woman in absolute emergency, damage: the south of France severely affected
This Thursday morning, two French departments are still in orange alert, for storms, rain and flood, following the violent meteorological episode that hit the south of France.

Since Tuesday, several southern departments are affected by thunderstorms and rain-flood particularly impressive. Storms of water have fallen in the south-east of France. And a woman is in a state of absolute urgency.

This Thursday, October 24 in the morning, Météo France announced that only one department is still placed in orange vigil for rain-flood and storm: it is about Haute-Corse.

After the violent storms which fell on Wednesday on the Hérault, "a torrent of water took away the railroad tracks" between Agde and Béziers, said the company.

Rail traffic will also be interrupted between Sète and Narbonne, still until Monday, November 4 in the morning due to significant damage caused by bad weather. "The railway platform has been weakened in several places, sometimes with almost 10 meters of void under the tracks, which are suspended in the air". "Important work of comfort and replacement of tracks and catenary installations will be necessary" and will take at least ten days, according to the SNCF.

Jusqu’au 4 novembre, les TGV à destination de Paris partiront donc de Montpellier et ceux qui viennent de la capitale auront pour terminus Montpellier.

Floods of magnitude

The torrents of water that have accumulated since Tuesday have had the direct consequences of causing many floods. As a security measure, the VISOV Digital Volunteer Association recalls the importance of "not crossing a flooded road on foot or by car".

A woman enters life and death

A septuagenarian, washed away by the waters and found inanimate near her home, was hospitalized "in absolute urgency" in Montpellier. According to firefighters Hérault, about fifty rescues were in progress in the late morning, by teams on the ground.

Eleven helicopters were carried out in the sector of Béziers, and 150 reconnaissance operations carried out for floods of houses. By mid-day, firefighters had moved 50 times for rescues and safety.

About 20 people had already been taken into custody overnight after flooding roads, the prefect said. "In Beziers, there is water, floods, but it is not catastrophic," the Prefect concluded, however, warning that.

A part of Fukushima prefectural road is damaged by floodwaters after torrential rain in Iwaki city, Fukushima prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.

TOKYO: Torrential rain that caused flooding and mudslides in towns east of Tokyo left at least nine people dead and added fresh damage in areas still recovering from recent typhoons, officials said Saturday.

Rescue workers were looking for one person still missing in Chiba. Another person was unaccounted for in Fukushima, farther north, which is still reeling from damage wrecked by Typhoon Hagibis earlier this month.

The death toll included eight people in Chiba and one in Fukushima. While rains and floodwater subsided, parts of Chiba were still inundated. About 4,700 homes were out of running water and some train services delayed or suspended.

In the Midori district in Chiba, mudslides crushed three houses, killing three people who were buried underneath them. Another mudslide hit a house in nearby Ichihara city, killing a woman. In Narata and Chonan towns, three drivers drowned when their vehicles were submerged.

In Fukushima, a woman was found dead in a park in Soma city after a report that a car was washed away. A passenger is still missing.

The downpour came from a low-pressure system above Japan’s main island of Honshu that moved northward later Friday.

Two weeks ago, Typhoon Hagibis caused widespread flooding and left more than 80 people dead or presumed dead across Japan.

October 23, 2019 - Barcelona: One man has died and two people are missing following torrential rains that caused flash floods in northeastern Spain, local officials said Wednesday.

The body of a man was found late on Tuesday in a beach in the town of Caldes d’Estrac some 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Barcelona, regional police said on Twitter.

Firefighters said they were looking for two people — reportedly a mother and her son — whose prefab home was swept away by flood waters in Vilaverd, a village some 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the port of Tarragona.

Authorities said heavy overnight rainfall in the northeastern region of Catalonia caused power cuts that affected nearly 25,000 people and forced the closure of over 40 roads due to flooding and landslides.

Last month record rainfall in southeastern Spain claimed seven lives.

Last year 13 people died on Spain’s holiday island of Mallorca as intense rain caused rivers to overflow with raging waters that tore through streets and swept away cars.

At least 37 people killed in Cameroon landslide

DOUALA October 29, 2019 - A landslide caused by heavy rains in western Cameroon killed at least 37 people overnight, state media reported on Tuesday, as rescue teams scoured the rubble of destroyed houses for survivors.

At least a dozen more people were still reported as missing in the town of Bafoussam in the western highlands, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Cameroon’s main port city of Douala.

“Around 10 p.m. I heard a noise,” said Albert Kenge, who survived the landslide. “I saw a big cloud of dust and when it dissipated, I saw that the mountain had collapsed.”

Heavy rains continued beyond the end of Central Africa’s rainy season, causing severe flooding which has displaced nearly 30,000 people in Cameroon’s neighbor, the Central African Republic.

The United Nations children’s agency UNICEF said last week that exceptionally heavy rain in South Sudan had destroyed health centers and roads, making access to food and water more difficult for nearly 1 million people.

Record rainfall closed roads, shut down train service and caused power outages in Oregon and Washington state Friday and into early Saturday morning.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport recorded 3.25 inches of rain on Friday, making it the fifth wettest day there ever, according to the National Weather Service. One area near Pluvius, in southwestern Washington, received nearly a foot of rain. More than 3.4 inches of rain fell in Astoria, Oregon, on the coast north of Portland, breaking a daily record set in 1906.

Flood warnings were still in effect early Saturday morning for several areas around Seattle, including parts of Snohomish, Mason, Lewis and King counties.

Amtrak train service between Seattle and Portland was suspended Friday morning after a landslide covered the tracks, The Associated Press reported. Service was not expected to resume until Sunday morning. Debris from the slide was 3 feet deep and 50 feet wide, BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said.

The Snoqualmie River overflowed its banks in King County, KOMO news reported. Some driveways and yards were inundated.

“The whole valley is just full of water,” one man who stopped for gas in the area told the station. “It looks like it's just a giant lake."

The Land of Israel has been blessed with an unbelievable amount of rain over the past two weeks – so much rain, in fact, that the amount of rain recorded in the north has broken the country’s 50-year record, according to the Israel Meteorological Service (IMS).

Record-Breaking Rainfall Creates Blessing, Havoc Across Israel Jan. 10, 2020
Record-Breaking Rainfall Creates Blessing, Havoc Across Israel

At Lake Kinneret, (Sea of Galilee), the water level rose by 10 inches (26 centimeters) since the start of the downpour. It stood at 211.1 meters (693 feet) below sea level, just seven feet (2.07 meters) from the top red line, the point at which the lake is at full capacity.

The rainfall accumulation has already surpassed the average for the winter season in most parts of the western Galilee, and the water level in Lake Kinneret is inching its way back up from the lower red line, where it’s been sitting for more than a decade of drought. Sometimes, in fact, it’s even dipped below.

An average of 13.7 to 15.7 inches (350 and 400 mm) of rain accumulation was recorded at meteorological stations in northern Israel since December 25, with some areas in the western and upper Galilee seeing more than 17.7 inches (450 mm) of rainfall.

That amount of rain has been seen only twice before since the weather service began measuring rain 80 years ago – in December 1951 and in January 1969.

Nearly four inches of rain (more than 100 mm) of rain fell in northern Israel on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the south, a 76-year record was also broken: 122 mm (five inches) of rain fell, and more rain is still expected through the weekend.

Just since the start of January 2020, the rainfall accumulation in the north has surpassed the month’s average in the region by 140 to 180 percent over the same period last year.

The deluge caused a massive amount of flooding throughout the northern and central sections of the country especially, with some Israelis becoming particularly creative in their coping methods.

Across the country, intercity highways were blocked off as one by one, flood water turned roads into canals.

The flooding has caused some NIS 300 million ($86.5 million) in damage to the infrastructure of the city, according to Marley.
