The two guys from the company arrived nice and early. They were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble, and unbelievably for us, they did the whole job in one day.

They started by roughly approximating the size of the opening. One of the previous owners had the fireplace bricked up and boarded. They drew out the lines and cut away the board with hammer and chisel:

There was a full course of brickwork behind, but they could see the original size of the opening inside, which was a bit bigger than what they cut out first. So they recommended we went bigger, to the original size. They set to work clearing it all out. A big, messy job:

Our boys had left the area due to the disturbance. Del's the braver of the two, and kept coming back throughout the day to have a look what was going on:

Next, they laid the hearth:

And after they did the hearth, they went outside and ran a waste pipe down through the chimney breast. When they got that in the right place, they boxed everything off and installed the mantle:

Lastly, came the plastering work, and the installation of the burner:

Now, where's my Phrygian cap...

I would have thought that since the products they are selling and installing produce carbon monoxide, and that they have to make sure all harmful gasses are going out of the room, that they’re at least certified in these types of areas.

Since we had no fire to remove, I can’t tell you whether the company we used can work with gas fires. But in all communications with them from the beginning, everything we asked basically came with the response, “Yes, that’s no problem.”

Don’t know where you are in the UK, but this company are based in Bolton and they came out to us in South Yorkshire, which for them was a 1.5 - 2hr journey. So it’s possible they’ll cover your area.

Their website is northweststoves(dot)com if you want to make enquiries.

Looks great! You can also install this thing on your stove for extra energy.

Ooh, interesting.

You could also use it to cook on if need be, no?

Yes, I’m pretty sure we could get something going on top. Just a question of hot it’ll get.

One of the fitters said it was actually quite a big one for the size of the room, but if we’d gone any smaller, I can’t imagine there’d have been much room on top for a pan.
