At least four powerful earthquakes of magnitude 6.8, 5.4, 6.6 and 5.8 hit the Fox Islands of Alaska in a span of two hours

Four earthquakes detected in Fox Islands, Alaska this Tuesday, January 11, 2022, reports the United States Geological Survey (USGS)

The United States Geological Survey announced that a magnitude 6.8 (initially 6.6) earthquake was recorded in the state of Alaska.

The center indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 71 kilometers southeast of the Nikolski region in Alaska, and announced that the depth of the earthquake was 22.3 kilometers.

Minutes later, three strong earthquakes were recorded in the same area: a second earthquake occurred 10 minutes after magnitude 5.4 at a depth of 32.2 km: less than an hour two earthquakes of magnitude 6.6 and 5.8 were recorded with an epicenter 60 km from Nikolski. None activated the tsunami warning.

USGS reports of an M6.6 in China:

Section of Great Wall collapses after 6.9 magnitude earthquake hits NW China - Global Times

A section of the Great Wall dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) collapsed after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Northwest China's Qinghai Province on Saturday midnight at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Two meters of the Great Wall collapsed in Shandan county, Northwest China's Gansu Province, which is 114 kilometers away from the epicenter in Menyuan county, in the Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai.

After the strong seism, authorities organized an inspection of local cultural relics and discovered the collapse site. A primary protection has been installed and the repair and restoration work is in process.

Another biggie of mag. 6+ size -

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has said that a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Java island on Friday, causing buildings in Jakarta to shake.

At 0905 GMT, the quake struck to the island's southwest at a depth of 37 kilometres (23 miles).

The tremor was felt in the capital and rattled buildings. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no early reports of injuries or damage.

Following the quake, some Jakarta residents were evacuated from their homes, and hundreds waited outside.

People in the Kalibata City apartment complex, in the capital's south, evacuated their homes as the earthquake struck, according to Nur Latifa, a 25-year-old resident.

"I was working from home and noticed my laptop was moving... then the door started to rattle and hanging objects started to make a noise," Latifa said.

"I fetched my roommate, who was in the bathroom, and we fled the apartment. Outside, people were rushing towards the emergency stairs. "

Due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of severe seismic activity where tectonic plates meet that runs from Japan to Southeast Asia and throughout the Pacific basin, Indonesia experiences numerous quakes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is already the eleventh of mag. 6+ in the first 2 weeks of this year according to the USGS.

The headlines on today's paper in North Cyprus - Cyprus Today:

Expert: Get used to Earthquakes

We will need to get used to living with earthquakes after one of the most powerful quakes to hit the island for years happened on Tuesday at 03.07am. ( Like others I was fast asleep - so luckily no injuries or serious damage to property)
Here is was measured at 6.2 but other reports from Turkey and USA say 6.4 and 6.6.

A 3.1 magnitude aftershock occurred two hours after the first quake.
'Tools, equipment and personnel should always be on stand-by in the event of a building collapse'
'A statement containing official guidance would be issued 'shortly''
'An earthquake measuring 5.2 occurred early last year' ( I felt that one, as I was on my mobile and everything shuddered making me feel dizzy).
Powerful earthquakes also struck in the 1990's. The island's most deadliest in recent history occurred on September 6, 1953 with Paphos being the worst affected area. A total of 40 people were killed and 100 seriously injured, with many thousands left homeless. There would have been more casualties had people not been out working in the fields at the time.

Earthquakes occur due to the 'Cyprus Arc' which sits on the tectonic boundary between the African and Eurasian plates. As the African plate moves gradually northwards, it is pushed under the Anatolian 'microplate'.
