WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 20_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A magnitude 5.2 aftershock of the M6.7 earthquake of last November 17 was recorded in Mabini Philippines. Subsequently, another M5.2 earthquake shook the city of Burias further north. A similar situation occurred from the Tazman Sea to the Coral Sea. Southwest of New Zealand an M5.2 earthquake was recorded and hours later an earthquake shook the island of Tonga. It is in this region that an M6+ earthquake is expected in response to the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines. It is worth mentioning that this earthquake in the Philippines was recorded as 7.2 and later updated.

Energy is starting to move into the Hindu Kush and Eastern Europe. Yesterday Nepal and Xinjiang China recorded light activity. Today Iran and Italy also recorded light activity. What should be emphasized is that the M4.8 earthquake in Italy occurred at a considerable depth of almost 411 km.

The Dutchsinse rule of Depth to magnitude, tells us that for every 100 km we have to add 0.2 magnitude to the original magnitude. So, a M5.6 earthquake (4*0.2=0.8+4.8) could happen in Italy in the next days. Let's hope it doesn't happen, an earthquake in Italy M5+ is not the same if it happens in Japan, Chile, or Mexico for example. It would cause damage in Italy.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have a slightly increase (from 1031 to 1040) According Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:​

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. There is not much saturation of seismic activity in one area. As mentioned the Philippines region has registered the highest magnitude activity in the past 24 hours and in the Americas, Chile and Mexico continue to register light activity which can be said to be common. So far no earthquakes greater than magnitude 5 have been recorded in Mexico and Central America. Seismic activity in Hawaii remains in the M2-M3 range.​

Researchers from the University of Missouri and Wuhan University looked at the idea that some of today’s earthquakes may be aftershocks from quakes in the 1800s.

In the 1800s, some of the strongest earthquakes in recorded U.S. history struck North America’s continental interior. Almost two centuries later, the central and eastern United States may still be experiencing aftershocks from those events, a new study finds.

When an earthquake strikes, smaller quakes known as aftershocks can continue to shake the area for days to years after the original earthquake occurred. These smaller quakes decrease over time and are part of the fault’s readjustment process following the original quake. While aftershocks are smaller in magnitude than the main shock, they can still damage infrastructure and impede recovery from the original earthquake.

“Some scientists suppose that contemporary seismicity in parts of stable North America are aftershocks, and other scientists think it’s mostly background seismicity,” said Yuxuan Chen, a geoscientist at Wuhan University and lead author of the study. “We wanted to view this from another angle using a statistical method.”

The study was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, AGU’s journal dedicated to research on the structure, evolution and deformation of the interior of our planet.

Regions near these historic earthquakes’ epicenters are still seismically active today, so it’s possible that some modern earthquakes could be long-lived aftershocks of past quakes. However, they could also be foreshocks that precede larger earthquakes or background seismicity, which is the normal amount of seismic activity for a given region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), there’s no way to distinguish between foreshocks and background seismicity until a larger earthquake strikes, but scientists can still discern aftershocks. Thus, identifying the cause of modern earthquakes is important for understanding these regions’ future disaster risk, even if current seismic activity is causing little to no damage.

The team focused on three historic earthquake events estimated to range from magnitude 6.5-8.0: an earthquake near southeastern Quebec, Canada, in 1663; a trio of quakes near the Missouri-Kentucky border from 1811 to 1812; and an earthquake from Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886. These three events are the largest earthquakes in stable North America’s recent history — and larger quakes trigger more aftershocks.

The stable continental interior of North America is located far from plate boundaries and has less tectonic activity than regions close to plate boundaries, such as North America’s west coast. As a result, the three study areas don’t encounter earthquakes often, raising even more questions about the origins of their modern seismicity.

To figure out if some of today’s earthquakes are long-lived aftershocks, the team first needed to determine which modern quakes to focus their efforts on. Aftershocks cluster around the original earthquake’s epicenter, so they included earthquakes within a 250-kilometer (155-mile) radius of the historic epicenters. They focused on earthquakes that were greater than or equal to a magnitude of 2.5 because anything smaller than that is difficult to reliably record.

The team applied a statistical approach called the nearest neighbor method to USGS earthquake data to determine whether recent earthquakes were likely to be aftershocks or unrelated background seismic activity. Aftershocks occur close to the original quake’s epicenter and before the level of background seismicity has resumed, according to the USGS. Thus, scientists can use a region’s background seismicity and an earthquake’s location to link a quake back to a mainshock.

“You use the time, distance and the magnitude of event pairs, and try to find the link between two events — that’s the idea,” Chen said. “If the distance between a pair of earthquakes is closer than expected from background events, then one earthquake is likely the aftershock of the other.”

Susan Hough, a geophysicist with the USGS who was not involved in the study, mentions that the distance between epicenters is only one piece of the puzzle.

“In some respects, the earthquakes look like aftershocks if you look at the spatial distribution, but earthquakes could be tightly clustered for a couple of reasons,” Hough said. “One is that they’re aftershocks, but also you could have a process of creep going on that’s not part of an aftershock process. Exactly what their results mean is still open to question.”

Looking at the spatial distribution, the study found that the 1663 aftershock sequence near southeastern Quebec, Canada, has ended and modern seismicity in the area is unrelated to the old quake. However, the other two historic events may still be triggering aftershocks centuries later.

Near the Missouri-Kentucky border, the researchers found that around 30% of all earthquakes from 1980 to 2016 were likely aftershocks from the major earthquakes that struck the area between 1811 and 1812. And in Charleston, South Carolina, the team found around 16% of modern-day quakes were likely aftershocks from the earthquake of 1886. Thus, modern seismicity in these regions is likely attributable to both aftershocks and background seismicity.

“It’s kind of a mixture,” Chen said.

For assessing a region’s modern seismic risk, scientists monitor creep and background seismicity in addition to any aftershocks. The study found background seismicity to be the dominant cause of earthquakes in all three of the study regions, which could be a sign of continued strain accrual. Aftershock sequences weaken over time, but strain accrual can lead to larger earthquakes in the future. However, some faults can creep along without building up strain.

“To come up with a hazard assessment for the future, we really need to understand what happened 150 or 200 years ago,” Hough said. “So bringing modern methods to bear on the problem is important.”

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The largest earthquakes occurred in the region of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. A M5.5 earthquake struck east of P.N.G. and hours later a M5.0 earthquake hit very close to the Mount Ulawun volcano of which the Japan Meteorological Agency has indicated its concern about a possible Tsunami risk for the coast of Japan.

Other moderate earthquakes were recorded in Fiji Islands, New Zealand and Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

A new earthquake was registered in the northwest of Italy, unlike yesterday's earthquake, the M4.1 earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of almost 7 km. The population must have felt a slight agitation.

A very deep earthquake was felt in Bolivia. The M4.4 quake was recorded at a depth of 246 km so it could have gone unnoticed by people. Another earthquake at intermediate depth shook northern Argentina. It is possible that the energy from seismic activity in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea is reaching the Americas.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 846 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. Also the seismic activity of the volcanoes in Iceland has decreased notably. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:​

On the other hand, seismic silence continues for earthquakes greater than M5 in Southeast Mexico, Central and South America.​

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The M7.0 earthquake in Vanuatu was revised to M6.7, however, this earthquake was already expected due to the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines which was also revised after being recorded as M7.2.​

According to the latest Analysis of Jesus Ramos, the energy of the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines could still generate a significant seismic event of between M7 and M8 mainly towards the areas of Java, Jakarta, Sumatra, Indonesia and towards the east in New Zealand, Vanuatu, Tonga and Fiji.

Now this energy will have an answer to South America. As for the response that Mexico is waiting for, we see that today the Kilauea volcano is registering seismic activity which indicates that energy is reaching that region, it is possible that Mexico will register a M5+ earthquake around November 27th.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, recorded a M5.2 earthquake in Crete. It is possible that it is related to the deep earthquake that occurred in Italy with M4.8 on November 20 this would be good news and let's hope so.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have increased to 968 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. The increase was due to moderate seismic activity at some volcanoes, including Kilauea in Hawaii and the Long Valley Caldera in California. WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 23_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Energy from earthquakes in Southeast Asia is beginning to reach Central and South America. An M5.3 earthquake shook the Antofagasta region of Chile while a lighter earthquake shook northern Costa Rica. However, the concentration of seismic activity occurred in Central Asia with a moderate M5.3 earthquake in Turkey, another moderate M5.2 earthquake on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Also light earthquakes in Xinjiang, Iran, Punjab India and Pakistan.

For the moment the activity in Southeast Asia remains at M4+ earthquakes with a single M5.0 earthquake in Tonga. According to the last analysis of Ka-Tet the possibility of an M8 earthquake still exists for two regions westward of Papua New Guinea: Indonesia, Sumatra, Malaysia regions and eastward Islands Solomon, Fiji, Vanuatu regions.


The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 865 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. Seismic activity at the volcanoes has taken a pause. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:​

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. As mentioned, seismic activity was concentrated in Central Asia with light to moderate earthquakes where the most significant earthquake occurred in Turkey. An isolated earthquake in the northern Atlantic Ocean with magnitude 5.4 was only reported by the Ayiti Seismic agency. It is very rare that neither USGS nor any other agency has recorded it and may be due to human error.
M5+ seismic silence continues in Southeast Mexico and Central America.​

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 24_2024

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A preliminary M7.0 earthquake according to s shook the Maug Islands region north of the Mariana Islands. This earthquake was adjusted to M6.9 by the USGS and other agencies. After this M6.9 earthquake there were continuous aftershocks ranging from M4+ to M5+ of this last magnitude, 10 earthquakes were produced. This energy will move towards the region of Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska and removes pressure for the areas indicated above for a possible M7+ event (to the west and east of Papua New Guinea).

The Mexican Seismological Service recorded an M5.4 earthquake south of Cabo San Lucas very close to the Revillagigedo Islands. The earthquake was later adjusted to M5.0. This earthquake was already expected in response to seismic activity in Southeast Asia and especially with the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines, an area that is seismically connected to Mexico.​

As for the response that Mexico is waiting for, we see that today the Kilauea volcano is registering seismic activity which indicates that energy is reaching that region, it is possible that Mexico will register a M5+ earthquake around November 27th.

As can be seen in the earthquake map, it is evident that the energy from the seismic activity in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea) is reaching Mexico, Central and South America. Today Panama recorded light seismic activity, four M4+ earthquakes shook the Central American nation with an M4.9 being the strongest earthquake.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have increased to 933 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. This increase was mainly due to seismic activity in the Mariana Islands but also to the seismic activity of volcanoes such as Clear Lake, Hrómundartindur, Kilauea and Campi Flegrei. So according to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity were:​

Clear Lake (34 quakes between mag 0.3-1.6 Fagradalsfjall (11 quakes between mag 0.2-1.5) Hrómundartindur (71 quakes between mag 0.2-3.4) Kilauea (29 quakes between mag 0.6-2.5) Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) (18 quakes between mag 0.2-1.4)​

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see activity practically around the Ring of Fire and Central Asia. The past 24 hours had great seismic activity as can be seen in the map. Finally the seismic silence was broken in Mexico for earthquakes of magnitude 5.​

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Moderate aftershocks continue in Maug Islands region, Northern Mariana Islands. The highest magnitude recorded was 5.6 on the other hand light to moderate seismic activity also continues in Central and South America.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 26_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The earthquakes of the past 24 hours indicate that the energy of the cluster of earthquakes in the Mariana Islands region (M6.9 and various M5+) is being distributed to the south (Ryukyu Islands M5.2, Taiwan M5.0 and Philippines M5.1) and southeast (Vanuatu M5.4).

A response of equal magnitude (M6.9) or in the worst case M7+ is expected to occur in Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska in the next few days. This series of earthquakes in the Mariana Islands decreases the pressure for the region of Sumatra, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea no longer for an M8 earthquake but there is still the possibility for an M7 earthquake from the east of Indian Ocean to the area of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have increased to 872 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. The increase was mainly due to increased seismic activity at the Clear Lake and Fagradalsfjall volcanoes. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:​

This is mainly due to the intense movement of energy that caused the seismic cluster in the Maug Islands in the Mariana Islands region.
