Hurricane Matthew

I have a few gardening online buddies who are staying put and going to ride this out who live along the coast line. I am very concerned would be an understatement. One lady was driving into an evacuation zone in Florida to try and get her mother that refuses to leave her home! Watching peoples wishful thinking is horrifying. With weather around the world intensifying, personally I would live no where near a coastline.

I know there is not much I can do but hope for the best but I really worry. I keep jumping online every few minutes to check. I am starting to think I have become a little obsessive about weather after record breaking flooding here the past two springs. I keep watching people stay in the same places that have large probabilities for flooding and other disasters. I have begun to get very paranoid over weather events not only for myself but for everyone. I can't seem to get over my frustration of people knowingly putting themselves in dangerous areas. It is not my business what other peoples lessons are, but I still can not stop myself from being a little, or big worry wart.

Is anyone else going through this? And if so, how are you dealing with it.

I forgot to add the latest SOTT article posted about the storm.

Looks like Cape Canaveral is gonna take a direct hit. Go NASA!

Yep, this is what happened last time NASA was hit.

•The enormous Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center is only designed to withstand category 3 winds
Hurricane Frances brought sustained winds of 70 mph, gusting to 94 mph, to the Kennedy Space Center, and ripped 820 panels off of the gargantuan 525-foot tall Vehicle Assembly Building (shown above). The Space Center suffered millions in damage. According to NASA documents, the building was designed to withstand winds of 114 miles per hour—what a weak Category 3 storm would deliver. It's always really piqued my interest when the C's said that 4D battles were disguised as weather.

Session 30 July 1994
Quote
A: It has already started. Will intensify steadily.
Q: (L) Why are we not aware that it has already started?
A: Disguised at this point as weather. Fighting part still in other dimension. Will go to this one within 18 years. Anytime within this period. Not determinable exactly when. Could be tomorrow or 18 years.
Q: (L) 18 years from now is 2012. Is there some special significance to that time?
A: By then

Compared with this latest hurricane as being described as "having a mind of its own"

I wish I was able to form a more complete image of what the C's meant, but it's been interesting at the very least to witness the rising intensity of storms over the past several years, some of which hit my own backyard.

Here's to hoping for the "best," and staying open to, well staying open!

I was looking at the projected track of the storm after it moves back out to the Atlantic and they have it looping around and heading back towards Florida right now. I wonder if it'll be the first "double" hurricane!

A few notable facts about it

It's the farthest-south forming Cat 5 in recorded human history. Its orientation to the equator would typically slow the spinning motion needed to strengthen a hurricane. The Coriolis effect from Earth's rotation is almost non-existent as you get close to the equator. Without that help, it's harder for a system to develop.

Matthew strengthened overnight from a Cat 1 to a Cat 5 in an explosive example of rapid intensification.

Yeah I saw that! Got me wondering if it had anything to do with the shifting poles.

That alone would have me high tailing it out of there, but then you have people like this guy....

None of this mattered to John Long, who lives in the Florida town of Cape Canaveral.

“The hype is going to be worse than the actual storm. I feel I can do quite well,” said Long, who owns a bike shop and plans to ride out the storm with his cat in his 32-foot recreational vehicle a half-mile from the ocean. He has lived in the Space Coast area for three decades. “There’s always tremendous buildup and then it’s no stronger than an afternoon thunderstorm. I’m not anticipating that much damage,” he said Wednesday.

This is really bad news if Hurricane Nicole joins the party. :scared:

And then there's Nicole possibly waiting in the wings (recently upgraded to a hurricane). Chance for a Matthew Nicole hook-up?

Seems forecasts are projecting that it could push Matthew back toward Florida and the Bahamas:

There's a second Atlantic storm called Hurricane Nicole — here's why it matters
_http://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-nicole-2016-10

"the key takeaway here is that Nicole looks like it will nudge Matthew back toward Florida and Bermuda in a kind of loop-de-loop later in the week. (Fortunately, Matthew will likely be much weaker at that point.)

One of my online buddies said this about today for Lake City Fl.

"What an eye opener! This town is….I can’t even describe it! There are more power trucks, tree cutting crews, power trucks with those big augers for putting in power poles, crews, crews, crews & more crews of power, rescue, restore, phone trucks, trucks carrying transformers & big electrical equipment, power poles, Red Cross and every other imaginable personnel that will be needed after Matthew leaves than I have ever seen in my entire life. The fairgrounds is wall to wall, only inches between, power trucks. Very, very minimum of 300 of them @ the fairgrounds alone. Hotels & we have a TON of them - parking lots are FULL of trucks, every available space in this town has trucks parked!!! WalMart parking lot, Home Depot, Lowe’s, anywhere there is to park all these vehicles. All ready to move when the storm is over. We saw at least 30 trucks heading west on Hwy.90 — probably to other areas to park or to hold up in Live Oak which is 20 miles away. We were only at the western edge of town. Then the doc, nurses & lab techs were describing downtown & said you can’t move, it’s so clogged with help for afterward. The doc said the hospitals (we have 2) are ready for injured from Jacksonville, all docs on alert. He also said we are all set up & ready to receive displaced people from Jacksonville. You just can’t believe how transformed this place is!!! Unbelievable!!!
It’s a surreal sea of trucks & equipment.
It’s both a heartwarming and devastating vision all at the same time.
It makes me feel good knowing they have enough faith that it will not be bad for us because they wouldn’t risk all that equipment & lives but then I feel guilty for being happy when on the other hand it makes me very scared for all the people in FL who are going to be hit hard by this storm.
But know this:
If ever the powers that be were prepared for the aftermath of a major hurricane; they are THIS time!!! I can assure you that help will be on the way as soon as they are given the go ahead to move out. There were more trucks rolling in all the time and I'm sure some will continue to move on down into the safer western portions of FL where they will be staged ready to roll out from there. "

A few news reports:

Obama signed an emergency declaration for the US state of South Carolina in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew.

Obama Signs South Carolina Emergency Declaration Ahead of Hurricane Matthew
https://sputniknews.com/us/20161007/1046079570/obama-signs-south-carolina-emergency.html

Hurricane Matthew is expected to hit the state of Florida on Thursday night as a category 4 storm.

Conditions in South Carolina are forecast to worsen Friday night, with the heaviest impact of Hurricane Matthew likely to occur on Saturday.

A state of emergency has been declared for all 100 counties in the US state of North Carolina ahead of Hurricane Matthew, the state's Governor Pay McCrory said in a press release.

State of Emergency Declared in North Carolina Counties Due to Hurricane Matthew

"Governor Pat McCrory has declared a State of Emergency for all 100 counties in order to provide the necessary assistance to eastern North Carolina and surrounding states as Hurricane Matthew approaches," the press release stated on Thursday.

The category four storm is expected to head up the east coast of the United States to North Carolina before turning southwest.

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has allocated funds for the northern and southern combatant commands to provide assistance to Caribbean nations and US communities.

Carter Approves $11Mln for Pentagon Support of Hurricane-Hit Communities
https://sputniknews.com/us/20161006/1046077726/carter-approves-matthew-hurricane-help.html

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has allocated funds for the northern and southern combatant commands to provide assistance to Caribbean nations and US communities in the path of Hurricane Matthew, Department of Defense spokesman Peter Cook said in a briefing on Thursday.

"The secretary approved the release of $11 million in funds for SOUTHCOM [Southern Command] to support Hurricane Matthew's relief efforts in Haiti and other countries of the Caribbean," Cook told reporters. Cook explained that Carter is receiving regular briefings on preparation efforts concerning Hurricane Matthew and "decisions will be made on what and where the greatest needs are."

The Northern Command will support Hurricane Matthew relief efforts on the Southeastern seaboard of the United States through the US National Guard, and will coordinate logistics with the Federal Emergency Management Administration, local and state officials, Cook added.

Hurricane Matthew is expected to have its greatest impact on Florida’s east coast.

Hurricane Matthew has already caused devastation in Haiti and elsewhere in the Caribbean.

What if Hurricane Matthew Hits Florida’s Nuclear Reactors?
http://blog.cleanenergy.org/2016/10/05/nuclearhurricanematthew/

Two nuclear power plants exist on Florida’s eastern coast: the St. Lucie and Turkey Point facilities. Based on the current National Hurricane Center projections, it appears that Hurricane Matthew will come closest to the St. Lucie nuclear facility early Friday morning. Storm surge near the St. Lucie nuclear reactors may reach 2-5 feet, and with hurricane force winds of 130 miles per hour. Meanwhile, a significant water quality problem in the Southeast is the ongoing pollution at Florida Power and Light’s (FPL) Turkey Point cooling canal system. It’s unclear what effects high winds and storm surge could have on Turkey Point’s open air industrial sewer.

After flooding caused a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor in Japan, the Miami News Times published an article, “Five reasons Turkey Point could be the next nuclear disaster.” The article noted: “Just like in Japan, Turkey Point is susceptible to a meltdown caused by a natural disaster. A hurricane-spurred tidal surge from Turkey Point’s neighboring Biscayne Bay could create catastrophic conditions identical to those in Japan. With power down, the plant would be forced to rely on emergency diesel generators to pump water to cool the reactors….those generators would ‘certainly’ become inundated with water from the tidal surge, causing them to drown and fail.” (Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and Tropical Audubon with Friends of the Everglades filed a lawsuit this summer to resolve the pollution problem caused by Turkey Point.)

he hurricane warning for Broward County was dropped Thursday night, as Hurricane Matthew's projected path veered north, appearing to remove the risk that South Florida would experience the worst of the storm.

Hurricane warning for Broward dropped, maintained for Palm Beach (Video)
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/weather/hurricane/fl-hurricane-matthew-story.html

The warning was replaced with a tropical storm warning. The hurricane warning for Palm Beach County was maintained.

But considerable danger remains. The National Weather Service warned that sustained winds of up to 70 mph, with gusts of up to 95, were possible from Boca Raton to Jupiter and farther north.

“Now is the time to urgently hide from the wind,” the weather service said in a warning issued at 8:22 p.m. “Failure to adequately shelter may result in serious injury or loss of life.”

The 9 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center located the center of the storm 70 miles east of West Palm Beach, moving northwest at 13 mph. But forecasters cautioned that the storm, which has maximum winds of 130 mph, is large and some parts of South Florida could still experience hazardous hurricane-force winds.

Another storm - A second storm in the tropics has reached hurricane strength. Hurricane Nicole is spinning about 345 miles south of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. There are no watches or warnings linked to Nicole. The storm is moving north-northwest, roughly in the direction of Bermuda, at 8 mph.

Here is the family I am very concerned about right now. She went to get her mom who refused to evacuate on a barrier island. They are in a clear spot for right now. Unless the storm veers to the east, it will be.....

A motorist shot during an altercation with South Carolina deputies over a Hurricane Matthew evacuation route has died.

Man shot dead by S.C. deputies in hurricane evacuation dispute
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/hurricane-matthew-evacuation-man-shot-dead-by-south-carolina-deputies-in-dispute/

Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner George Oliver says 35-year-old Lucas M. Felkel of Moncks Corner died shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Duane Lewis says it happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Moncks Corner when a motorist came to a checkpoint, knocked down some traffic cones and sped off.

Lewis said he didn’t know at the time what the subject told the officers, but he said there was some indication by the subject that the officers were in danger, CBS affiliate WCSC-TV reports.

“His actions placed the officers in danger,” Lewis said. “The Moncks Corner police called the sheriff’s office for assistance and we responded and picked up the chase on Old Highway 52.”

The sheriff says when deputies finally caught up with the driver a few miles away he pointed a gun at deputies and started shooting. The sheriff says the deputies shot back, wounding the man who was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

No deputies were wounded, but the sheriff says that four deputies have been placed on administrative leave.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. The coroner says an autopsy is scheduled.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is taking every precaution in ordering a massive evacuation. To reduce delays, state troopers reversed all of the interstate’s east-bound lanes, creating a one-way, six-lane freeway that stretches more than 100 miles from Charleston to Columbia. That’s in addition to South Carolina’s established network of hurricane evacuation routes.
