I need ( advice) to write a monography on Gurdjieff

A few months ago i've decided, in eager, to write about Gurdjieff for my master degree ( after we finish college in Romania we do another 2 years of preparation in a specific field, mine being Russian culture and international relations) and i talked to one of my Russian teacher to tell her about my intentions. All those years since i study russian culture i have never come along with the figure of Gurdjieff as a mystic Philosopher or spiritual leader. He hasn't been mentioned at all throughout those years but happily my coordinator agreed to let me write my paper on him and proposed me to make a monography.

So i started to do some research ( i have all his books and Ouspensky's in english on my computer) and read insofar In Search of the Miracoulous, The Fourth Way ( the first volume) to get familiarized with his ideas before actually reading his own works ( i started to read My Life is Real only when 'I Am '). For the time being i find myself quite in limbo about other sources. Would you be so kind as to recommend me some sound sources, books about him or sites that offer good pieces of information ( except this forum without whoose existence the ideas about Gurdjieff and Esoteric Christianity would have never occured to me :) )?

I'm very eager to be able to write something valuable although i try to stay realistic at the same time with work on myself, a process that proceeds rather slowly and inconsistently at the time being ( because my own being has been for so many years inconsistent and idle) but it proceeds...

I'm a member of this forum for a year and two or three months and i'm not a regular poster but here i find the only people who share my interest in the Work. My collegues and my friends are totally indifferent towards this system and i don't talk about what i read here but with my mother, who , though not a higly intellectual being is pretty open towards new ideas about improving oneself.

There are two books which might collectively be a valuable source of information relating to your project. Both are by a long time student of Gurdjieff - Charles Stanley Nott (more commonly C S Nott) "The Teachings of Gurdjieff - A Pupil's Journal" and "Journey Through this World"

There is information in these books I've not come across anywhere else. They are written in a very straight forward manner, and add tremendously to the picture of the Work. Also, Orage's Commentaries on 'Beelzebub' is included.

Hope this helps

Kris

Thank you , Reflection of You

I have read on various sites about Nott's experiences on Gurdjieff so i added him to my list :)

You'll want to check out the sources on _http://www.gurdjieff-bibliography.com/

There are a few 'scholars' who have written on Gurdjieff, so if you're taking a scholarly approach, you may want to check them out: Mohammed Tamdgidi, Paul Beekman Taylor, and James Moore (maybe James Webb, too).

For some other first hand accounts you might want to try Katherine Hulme's "Undiscovered Country"

http://www.bythewaybooks.com/cgi-bin/btw455/2234.html

& Thomas an Olga de Hartmann's "Our Life with Mr Gurdjieff"

http://www.bythewaybooks.com/cgi-bin/btw455/13992.html

And while not a real biography of all, you can read the book of Gurdjieff "Meetings With Remarkable Men", in which he talks of his travels and experiencies (possibly with the tangled clues, but it is interesting).

Thank you very much

Can i also find these books on a readable version online?

You can also take a look at a website I been going to called the 'Gurdjieff International review'. They have not only work and excerpts from gurdjieff but also work from his students like ouspensky etc.

Hello psychic_spy,

You will certainly need to be discriminating if you are looking for good material on the Internet.

I suggest you get hold of James Moore's biography of Gurdjieff (see http://www.gurdjieff.org.uk/biography.htm) and his article about the Gurdjieff literature at: (http://www.gurdjieff.org.uk/gs8new.htm)

Gurdjieff: a Reading Guide is certainly a reliable site, as has been mentioned: http://www.gurdjieff-bibliography.com/

There is also a study group in Bucharest: http://www.gurdjieffstudies.eu/Romania.htm

Good luck with your project!

Jay

Good day, friends!
please advise if i can find Charles stanley nott's works online, may be extracts...

Thank you in advance.

Hi Prosto, and welcome to our forum.

As far as I know, all Nott's works are copyrighted, so any online available book would be violation of copyright law.

By the way, if you are going to stay with us for some time, we'd encourage you to post an introduction in the Newbies section telling us a bit about yourself, and how you found your way here. You can read through the many newbie introductions to get a feel for how others have done it. Thanks. :)

Untill this moment i managed to acquire 9 books concerning my subject :

1. Edmond Andre - Intalniri cu maestrii sufiti ai lui Gurdjieff
2. Kathryn Hulme - Undiscovered Country - In Search of Gurdjieff
3. Thomas and Olga de Hartmann - Our Life with Mr. Gurdjieff - 16
4. C.S. Nott - Teachings of Gurdjieff - A Pupil’s Journal
5. James Moore - Gurdjieffian Confessions - A Self Remembered
6. James Moore - Gurdjieff - A Biography - The Anatomy of a Myth
7. G.I. Gurdjieff - Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson
8. James Webb - The Harmonious Circle - The Lives and Work of G.I Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky and Their Followers
9. John Henderson - Hidden Meaning and Picture-form Language in the Writings of G.I. Gurdjieff

I find William Patrick Patterson's books useful for historical reference. There are many books written by academics or disappointed students of Gurdjieff's teachings. William Patrick Patterson is not a naysayer who searches for scandal and gossip to serve an agenda. His writings are the result of forty years of Fourth Way effort. He has produced a film trilogy on Gurdjieff's life which may help in your research. Good luck with your Work, psychic_spy.
