Residential schools, and all that that entails; being overcome as a child, surviving if you could, finding a way out and living with the memories and being crushed, and then trying to pick yourself up and out of it, is featured in this adaptation from Richard Wagamese's book 'Indian Horse' - starts off in the year 1959 in Canada.

Although this film is not available online (don't think), my partner and I took this in with its history of being pretty much played out from community to community somewhere in Canada for much of the last century. The husks of these schools survive a short drive from most people, and the effects upon the children who are either gone or now older, keeps cycling through generations. Reserves and addictions feature prominently, and in a way, the focus has been maintained on division when the real problem was initiated by a few through time who tried and did institutionalize it. Of course, most countries have had similar versions at some point in their history with lasting societal effects bearing deep mental scares. It has been a damn mess.
