Insect in a jar found in the area around my apartment

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to a new apartment. The threshold to my front door is surrounded by mulch and hedges. I came home recently and saw this jar with an insect in it unburied in the mulch. It wasn't visible when I moved in. I was wondering if any of you knew what this is? It's a bit bizarre to me.

Thanks benkostka. I am curious why someone would put a cicada in a jar with water and bury it. Some superstition, or something cultural or something else? I've no idea.
It looks like it's a old glass jar for sure. It is said that cicadas symbolize personal change, rebirth, renewal, and transformation. Unlike a butterfly, moth, or other insects that effect a complete metamorphosis, cicadas have no pupal state. They transform from one fully-functioning state to another. Maybe someone was moving out or in who had an insect collection and lost it in the move?

It’s a cicada. There’s a bunch of different types and occasionally they’ll be thousands that appear all at once. They’re very noisy.

I grew up in an area where we had cicadas. When I was young, their pattern of calls would lull me to sleep. When I moved away from the area for the first time to somewhere that had no 'night noises', it took me awhile to be sleep peacefully without them. I know, weird... ;-D

That’s been my experience actually. I find the sounds of Nature to be soothing and relaxing, much more so now than a few years ago. The noise pollution of modern society is horrible, and it’s difficult to escape.

Yes, but one can get used to the sound pollution of modern cities, just as much... sadly.

And it's probably the life in the sounds of nature that makes them soothing actually.

And regarding the actual insect, not sure what it may have meant for whoever placed it there. But it seems like a popular enough thing for there to be a product about it in Etsy, weird.

It looks from another century, from the Victorian era. Maybe it was a time capsule. Maybe a gift from a lover. Or a magical potion…
