Since the quest for the grail is at least partly a struggle and triumph in each of our own minds, then medusa with its many snake heads must also be a monster of our minds. Medusa controls within it all the fragments of our minds that were enslaved or born or broken off and hidden away as the result of some extreme suffering we experienced (my interpretation of poseidon and medusa mating in the pure temple). Medusa turns the opposing forces that we unleash against it, opposing forces originating solely of our own minds, into stone, which thereby co-opts more parts of our minds. The only way to slay medusa is to use the minds outside of us; other people observe us and they collectively are the mirror shield that reflects to us the existence, the location, and the weakness of medusa, so we can slay it. Once medusa is slain, the parts of our minds formerly under medusa control are liberated like pegaseus flying away and integrated. Our minds are made more whole and stronger, giving us better mental abilities or decision making, which makes us appear to navigate much better than before. However, medusa is not just one victory. Medusa is many headed, and medusa as a whole represents the enslavement and withholding of all the parts of our minds away from us. It will take many reflections of the mirror to see all the varying existences and locations of the snake heads, and it will take many slayings in the mind before medusa is completely vanquished.
The more of medusa mind that we identify with the help of other people and slay in order to integrate those mind fragments back into our own minds, the more our abilities grow so that our use of these former parts of medusa mind seem like an incredible power we have gained.
