Members on a Mailing List

Just thought I'd do that thing and search for my name on the web, when up pops a text file "mailing list" on somebody's website with a whole bunch of other recognizable members from this forum.

Anyone know how they did that, and whether we could get it removed? It's odd because it lists an email that I didn't think I'd used anywhere on this site (unless it was signing up for something, which I don't remember...?)

I noticed this at the bottom:
"Protests and demonstrations against Barclays in South Africa"

They must have gotten the emails when (and if) you signed up for such protests. That's the only thing that stands out. Either that or they grabbed them from other "protect" sites.

That's what I'm thinking at the moment. I could be wrong.

That's very odd indeed. Any idea who Rob and Sara are? Craig, can you try to find a contact for them? If we can contact them, we can ask them to remove it.

I'll have a look around. By the way, does this logo that's in the directories look familiar to you?

No, although as a Homer-esque Tibetan logo, it's pretty funny. Wonder who these folks are and why they are displaying private email addresses for the whole world to see (and use/spam/solicit)?

Their site looks very much like a personal website, with all of their personal files. Much like very own hard drive...except it's 'out there.' I don't know if they are intentionally promoting the list.

And, why are they stealing Homer's famous phrase?

Well, I'm sure I've seen that logo here on the forum! I checked the WHOIS entry but the email address there ( rob.sara@gte.net ) bounces the message back. There are two of my emails in that list, and I'm thinking they were collected from the Signs Newsletter registration somehow... it took a while to start up, and I entered more than one in there because I thought it wasn't working.

Is yours in there? and if so, is that what you receive the Newsletter through, assuming you've subscribed?

Yeah, it seems like the PHP server thingy stopped working, and the site that masks all of the directories is down; so the mailing list being viewable is probably unintentional. Still doesn't explain why there IS a mailing list though... ;)

I also noticed that Sara is a member of a Lutheran Church. But, I do not know about Rob. It's interesting to see the pictures, though. A dog eating Easter bunny, a chick is about to be cut, etc., and other personal photos.

We know the who (well, almost), the how, the where, but now the question, as Craig asked, is why.

See above, tried and failed. Maybe if they're looking at the site logs they'll see the bandwidth coming from that image and check the thread out.

They won't be able to see that we are visiting from this thread since the link you posted is disabled. When you have to copy and paste the URL, it erases any possible referring URL (this thread).

I was talking about the image in this post which links to that site.

Ok, I found a Robert Wagner who works for the state not too terribly far from the address that is registered for the domain. I have sent a contact email. Wait and see.

Ah, sorry. I see what you mean.
