Ol' coffee grinder

Hi guys, I just spent a week at my mothers and stepfathers summer cottage which was refreshing in many ways. I found an old coffee grinder that looked like it hadn't been used in many years; it turned out that it used to belong to my grandmother. I asked my mother if I could have it, since I've been planning to get a grinder to grind seeds and stuff, and she agreed. The grinder was in pretty bad shape but I was happy to spend a few hours cleaning it up. Then I honed and polished it, replaced a few screws and finally I varnished it with a nice dark lacquer.

I'm happy how beautiful it turned out and the old metal grinding parts seem to be very sturdy and in good shape - they sure knew how to make good quality parts in those days (I estimate that the grinder is at least 70 years old). And it works really well too. It has a simple trimming mechanism for grinding stuff in different sizes. So far I've made nice powder of eggshells and sesame seeds, since those are good sources of calcium and especially suitable for our son. :)

Thanks for sharing this, Aragorn. It's lovely to see something like this being cared for. I know it's a cliche, but they really don't make them like they used to!

I would like to ask, did you notice any kind of change in your connection with your grandmother upon restoring the grinder?

Thanks for asking, I hadn't really thought about that. I did feel happy about the grinder coming back to life and I did feel warmth when imagining my grandmother using it. She passed away ten years ago and I remember that I didn't cry at her funeral because I was at that time really emotionally shut down - didn't feel anything! Later, when I started opening up I had some sad moments remembering her, but still no tears. So I guess this grinder is a good reminder of 'unfinished business', I hope I will be able to open up the connection to my grandmother and do some good crying. Maybe she wanted to help me, who knows...

Your refurbished coffee grinder is beautiful! I have one that looks very similar, except the wood is not in as good of shape as yours. It was left behind by the previous owner of our house. I am going to dig it out of the closet and see if I can renew it.

You've inspired me Aragorn! Thanks for sharing.

It reminds me of my chilhood days. In the old family house we used to have one similar.

Thanks for sharing.
