Yemeni protesters rally in Sana'a on Thursday, calling for a boycott of parliamentary elections

Because of the shooting, 23 people were wounded, three of them critically, the rally organizers said.

The Yemeni Socialist Party along with several other opposition groups is calling for a boycott because is says that the results will be rigged by the 9-member electoral body overseeing the vote. The electoral body is appointed by the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and is closely linked to his ruling party.

The Yemeni journalists union also issued a statement saying the troops used batons and weapon butts and beat seven journalists who were covering the rally.

An Interior Ministry official said the troops fired into the air to disperse the 'illegal' demonstration in the capital Sana'a, but he refused to comment on any injuries.

Socialist leader Yaseen Said No'man said the opposition has been holding demonstrations across Yemen to protest the government's rejection of amendments to the country's electoral law that is meant to curb vote rigging. He said the opposition wants the electoral body to include independent figures and opposition members.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been in power in Yemen since 1978, ruling North Yemen and then continuing in power after North and South Yemen united in 1990.

The Yemeni Socialist Party is Yemen's second biggest party and ruled southern Yemen before the unification. The country's opposition bloc has 60 members in the 301-seat parliament.
