Hundreds of people were injured in northwestern Spain when a pier collapsed during an oceanside music festival in the city of Vigo, the authorities said on Monday.

The pier collapsed around midnight Sunday, throwing people into the water below and on top of one another. Divers and other rescue workers were still searching late Monday morning for anybody who might have been trapped below the broken boards of the pier, but the authorities in the northwestern region of Galicia reported no fatalities.

More than 300 people were reportedly injured in the collapse, and after treatment of their injuries, nine people remained hospitalized on Monday, including five in serious condition.

The pier collapsed along its central section, which had a length of about 40 meters, or roughly 130 feet, “probably either because of excess weight or jumping by the audience,” Enrique López Veiga, the president of the Vigo port authority, told the Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER. The accident occurred during the closing concert, by the Spanish rap artist Rels B.

Martín Tena, 18, attended the rap concert with six friends and was on the pier when it collapsed. “It felt a bit like being in an elevator that suddenly breaks up into two,” he said by phone, after being discharged from a hospital on Monday evening with a sprained ankle. “There was just this huge noise, of wood splintering and people screaming.”

The organizers of the festival said in a statement on Monday that their concerts “fulfilled the security conditions required by the law.”

Multiple emergency crews responded to the scene after a foul weather caused the metal pavilion to collapse at a Backstreet Boys concert in Oklahoma on Saturday night, local media reported.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m., when a storm bringing heavy winds and rain knocked over the entrance trusses at the outdoor venue at the Winstar Casino. At least 14 Backstreet Boys fans were injured in the incident, WFAA media outlet reported.

At 5:00 p.m., WinStar World Casino and Resort officials began evacuation of the outdoor concert venue after observing that lightning was within four miles of the casino. All patrons in the area were asked to move and to seek shelter from the storm. However, about 150 patrons who were standing in line for the Backstreet Boys concert did not heed staff’s warnings," Winstar Casino said in a statement.

The Backstreet Boys canceled the concert, saying that they would try to reschedule the event.

According to local media, Injured fans were treated at the scene, and then taken to local hospitals. Two people reportedly had already been released from the hospital.

At least 14 people were sent to the hospital Saturday after a storm knocked over concert entrance trusses at an Oklahoma outdoor concert venue hosting the Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees, a spokeswoman for the property owner said.

The staff at the venue had begun evacuating fans after lightning was spotted, Kym Koch Thompson, a spokeswoman for WinStar World Casino and Resort, said.

But about 150 people in line “did not heed staff’s warnings.”

Thompson said the area was pounded by heavy rain and winds as strong as 80 mph.

Prior to the incident, Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson tweeted that the bands were expecting a sold-out concert with about 12,000 attendees. Richardson later tweeted that the concert had been canceled because of the storm and injuries to fans.

Linda Tesfatsion was waiting for the concert to start at the venue in Thackerville when the storm went through, she said.

“Hundreds of Backstreet Boys fans playing chicken with an Oklahoma storm right now. Giant metal entrance structure, portable toilets, blew over. A handful of people left in ambulances,” she wrote on Twitter with a picture of the structure that fell.

She said she saw four people put on gurneys and taken away by ambulances. A few of the injured had bandages on their heads but were able to walk, she said.

The metal structure that fell was holding up a purple banner that read “The Colosseum at WinStar,” she said.

Two of the people who were hospitalized have been released, Thompson said Saturday night.

In a tweet, the Backstreet Boys said they will attempt to reschedule the concert at a later date.

“We never want to put our fans in harm’s way and with tonight’s weather and the injuries from earlier, we have decided to cancel the show and will attempt to reschedule. The most important thing is for everyone to get home safely and we will see you all very soon!”

Richardson tweeted, “unfortunately, due to damage sustained in the storm earlier this evening, we are unable to perform the show tonight. Safety is always #1. Keep your tickets because Backstreet WILL BE BACK!”

Members of the band 98 Degrees tweeted they were disappointed that Saturday’s show was canceled due to the weather.

“We know many of you traveled to be here today. Sending you all our love and hope to see you soon.”
